[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 517276] Re: [G84] X freezes after pressing ENTER
sadly I'm unable to find any error messages in your logs, besides the ACPI ones. Maybe it's related after all? Could you please recreate the freeze change to console and post the results of the following: dmesg dmesg.log top -b -n 5 top.log I doubt they will reveal anything but to be sure also try posting: /var/log/daemon.log /var/log/kern.log /var/log/syslog -- [G84] X freezes after pressing ENTER https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/517276 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 518309] Re: Xorg freeze
When booting 2.6.32-12, most of the times, no ubuntu splash screen is shown. A (movable) mouse pointer shows up after a while, and a small line (cursor) in the upper left corner. I then switch to a VT with Ctrl- Alt-F1 (and reported this bug). If I after that switch back with Ctrl- Alt-F7, the gdm login screen is shown, but when I try to login (after entered password and pressed ok) the system locks up hard. when booting 2.6.32-11, this problem does not occur, so I'm unsure whether xorg or linux is the correct package for this one. ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Xorg freeze https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/518309 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 464591] Re: upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx
It is save, in case you feel able to fix the problems like described in the release notes. In case you want to have things work out of the box, I advice you to continue with 9.4 Ciao, Stefan. clau...@guendelman.com wrote: I still have the same Bug. i Upgrade and i install from cero i mean i do a clean instal and my graphic card ATI radeon breaks. Claudio Fron Chile 2010/2/6 joherrer joher...@gmail.com I am invited now to upgrade to 9.10. I first installed 9.10 and had to quit due to nvidia. Then my son installed 9.4 and it is doing well. ¿Is it safe to accept the challenge upgrade? -- upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/464591 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: see also here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305459 for some reasons the upgrade breaks proprietary graphics drivers this means a flickering screen without the possibility to login or startx. ATTENTION Since this bug report is being linked to by news stories, it is getting viewed by many people with nvidia bugs that fail in similar ways but due to unrelated causes. I'd like to direct them to more appropriate bug reports: The blinks on reboot issue is a bug in gdm, bug #441638. That blinking symptom will occur for any sort of failure of X to start, and there are a lot of reasons why X may not start, so be aware that just because someone else is reporting this same blinking behavior does not necessarily mean you have the same underlying cause as them, so keep digging. This is causing lots of confusion in bug reports. For those who have upgraded since Intrepid or earlier, there is an issue reported where /sbin/lrm-video can cause nvidia to fail loading. That file no longer exists in Jaunty or Karmic and you can safely delete it as a work around. Bug #467490 describes this issue. I don't know how common this is, but if it is common we may need to make sure the upgrader removes the file properly. Manually uninstalling all nvidia packages *might* clear the file. For people running -rt kernels, such as Ubuntu Studio users, -nvidia has a known incompatibility there, see bug #464125 for example. Similar situation for -pae kernels, see bug #454220 as a recent example. Someone mentioned that the upgrader disables the proprietary drivers. According to mvo, that is not correct, or at least not intentional. However, the upgrader *does* remove driver entries from xorg.conf if the driver is no longer present after upgrade. As far as I know, this should all work seamlessly for people, however several people have reported that removing their xorg.conf and reinstalling -nvidia helped, so it is possible there is an error in this logic. If you suspect this is the case, what we need is a full bug report filed using 'ubuntu-bug xorg'; in particular we need to see the xorg.conf files so we understand how the upgrader is misbehaving. I see a lot in forum articles the advice that the solution is to remove nvidia or fglrx lines from xorg.conf. While this may help in getting the system functioning again, please note that it is not a solution - it merely turns off the proprietary drivers. Whatever the original problem was is still there, you're just using different video drivers. Also, be aware that both nvidia and fglrx install GL and other libraries on top of the normal system libraries, so if you install one of those drivers and then use something else, it may work for 2D but you may run into severe problems for 3D. This is also a known issue - bug 258038 describes one possible solution we will be considering for Lucid. It's a hard problem to solve for proprietary drivers though. There are almost certainly more nvidia bugs, but we also have plenty of other bug reports (over 300 against -nvidia so far), many of which have been reported using ubuntu-bug so are closer to having the information we need. Finally, regarding people skills, actually after thousands of X bug reports those get worn down to a raw nub so I don't think I have them any more. All that's left is a grumpy X maintainer. p.s. Also see bug 438398 which appears to be the root cause for a lot of the nvidia failures. Unfortunately jockey may not be flagging these errors to the user (bug 441638) leading them to reboot without the nvidia driver fully installed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 518201] Re: [Arrandale] Freeze on login after update
This sound like a GPU hang, and that would not always leave anything in Xorg.0.log. (I have seen that it has happened with very recent versions, though). There is more information about this kind of bug at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze , including information about how to get a batchbuffer dump, which we need for this kind of bug. The Arrandale chipset is a very new one and this is the first freeze bug report I have seen for this chipset, so it would be nice if we could troubleshoot this and send it upstream to the intel developers. If you find the package upgrade that makes this happen, that would be useful information. Likely suspects are the linux kernel, mesa-packages and xserver-xorg-video-intel. Since there is a lot of development happening for this chipset, it would also be nice if you could test the newest mainline kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds for more information). The newest there is currently 2.6.33-rc6, but -rc7 should also be available soon. If it isn't solved by a recent kernel, it would also be nice if you could test with the xorg-edgers PPA (https://launchpad.net /~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) before we send it upstream, so that we know the bug is still present in the latest code. -- [Arrandale] Freeze on login after update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/518201 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

This seems like a GPU hang. There is more information about how to get the information we need (especially a batchbuffer dump) for this kind of bug at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze . In order to do anything about it we need to get it tested on Lucid, and since this is a very new chipset which is only officially supported from kernel 2.6.33 (Lucid ships with 2.6.32), I would like you to test this with that kernel, available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D (more information at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 508456] Re: Lucid frequently crashes while starting gdm on Averatec 3280
Same problem here, but only on my Laptop (MSI VR201) with intel graphics (x3100). I don't have the not-working-at-all problem mentioned by nicobrainless, though. I can also start by resuming normal boot in recovery mode and then starting the deamons i need from commandline. I do not however see the login screen sometimes as described by Peter Belew on 5th of feb., but the login sound is played. I also find, that the problem usually doesn't occur in the first reboot after an update, but I don't know wether this is just coincidental. Another question to me is - cause Scott J. Remnant wrote it could be an x-server issue - if it could have something to do with intel graphics, as i can't enable visual effects either and was able to do so before installing lucid. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 517276] Re: [G84] X freezes after pressing ENTER
While X freezes I can't switch to vt1, so I'm sending two directories with the files, one before the freeze, and one after the freeze but also after the X reset. Both of them are while I'm on gdm. Also, when switching to vt1 before the freeze, I'm not seeing the expected console output, but only random characters and colors, like if the 0xB800 segment is filled with random data (it might be the gdm wallpaper). So I had to make a shell script with the dmesg, top etc commands and logon/run it blindly. I tried removing quiet splash from grub.cfg, and also removing my xorg.conf, so that nv is used instead of nvidia, but I only noticed a minor change in the random characters / colors pattern - vt1 was still unusable before the freeze. While switching back to gdm (and before the freeze), I could see two small dots blinking on the top of my screen, which I suppose would be the cursor. After X freezes and I reset it, everything is back to normal: the console is ok, no blinking dots in gdm etc. Thank you for your time! ** Attachment added: logs.tar.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38859978/logs.tar.gz -- [G84] X freezes after pressing ENTER https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/517276 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I'm certain that the second set of logs were from after the freeze. I tried to log in and observed the freeze, then I started up again and without logging in the normal way got to a text terminal and copied the logs to my /home. Then I booted with the installation disk, mounted the hard drive file system, and uploaded them. In retrospect the middle step was probably unnecessary, but oh well. Some bad new, while reinstalling Xubuntu for the ~6th time last night by computer trying to isolate which package installation it was that caused the fault* my laptop apparently lost all power and I haven't been able to get it working again yet. So its not impossible that the problems I was having were related to some fault in my batter system, though I think that's unlikely. In any event, it might be a while before I get a working laptop again, but of course I'll be happy to help track this problem down. *I think I had narrowed the package responsible down to the range of packages between (exclusive) those beginning with 'x' and those beginning with 'lib', so possible one of the linux update packages. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards
Thanks stephan202! I have done some further digging and it appears to be related to the BIOS/EDID miss reporting informationMy screen is a 15.6 HD LCD 1366x768. the driver doesn't detect LCD correctlyso by default ends up with res of 0x0. :( I did false the screen 1024 x 768 by fudging some of the code in sis_vb.c file and re-compilingit didn't quite sort out the problem...it appeared to load the screen X (gdm logon) but as soon as X tried to refresh the screen (ie if I logged in via gdm or if I switched to a Text screen (using crtl+alt+f1 and then back to X screen) - screen goes black then fade to white from all four edges of the screen - like the frequencies where way out. ) :/ So I decided that I need to start reviewing understanding the source code before I continuingor find someone how is familiar with the code to look at the problem further. -- [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301958 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-sis in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 518201] Re: [Arrandale] Freeze on login after update
Andrew, you shouldn't need to reinstall Xubuntu many times to find the package upgrade that causes this. If you do a `sudo apt-get dist- upgrade` you can save the list of packages that is getting upgraded and choose no in order to not upgrade right away. You can then run `apt- get install packagename` in order to upgrade only a specific package and its dependencies. If you install too many packages, you can also downgrade. If there has been a previous upgrade (unlikely in your case) you can find the old packages in /var/cache/apt/archive and install them with `dpkg -i deb-file-name`. Otherwise you can find the deb-files on the installation medium. If you uncomment it in /etc/apt/sources.list, you should also be able to downgrade with `apt-get install packagename=version`. I think this is muck more likely to be caused by not-quite-mature drivers than your power problems. I will set the status of this bug report to Incomplete for the time being to keep it off our radar until you get your system working again. Once a another comment is added it pops back again, since we typically only filter away Incomplete bugs without responses. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = High ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- [Arrandale] Freeze on login after update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/518201 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
