[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] Re: [Clarkdale] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics

2010-02-22 Thread KeithM
Vikram,

This problem definitely exists in Lucid Lynx 10.04 Alpha2, desktop amd64
bit version, that I downloaded and tested on 2/9/10.

C:\Users\\Downloadsc:\md5sum lucid-desktop-amd64.iso
64c577165a31e761a261a2d5efa53ff8 *lucid-desktop-amd64.iso

64c577165a31e761a261a2d5efa53ff8 *lucid-desktop-amd64.iso from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/alpha-2/MD5SUMS

They have file dates of 1/13/10-1/14/10.

Is there some newer version, or has something changed since 2/9/10 ??

My understanding is that the newer kernel 2.6.33 had fixed the issue,
and since Lynx is shipping w/ 2.6.32 --- the problem could possibly be
there (and appears to be confirmed w/ my empirical testing)

Thanks

Keith

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

This is a new bug seen in Ubuntu 9.10. In previous versions I was able to
save x configuration with the help of the sudo command.

But here it looks like the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf has a changed structure
or layout, at least compared to what Nvidia expects.

2.8.99.901-16-g7e7db7a just got done building. If you could verify if
that version also freezes, it'd be a good sanity check.

I'm going to upload a version between 2.8.99.901-5-g57fc09c and
2.8.99.901-12-g2cc1f3c now, and it might take an hour or so to build.

some patching of evtouch was necessary to deal with its multitouch

Has there been any movement on this issue?

+
+ Update: Alternatively I could just leave the computer for a while after
reopening the lid, after 30-90seconds of a completely black screen X
restarts. It might have done this when I tried switching with
[alt][f1]etc and didn't notice and just assumed it had logged me out. It
was as if the computer had gone in to hibernation or suspend at some
point between closing the lid and opening the lid even though I've set
Ubuntu to only blank the screen when the lid is closed on AC power.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 523174] Re: X freeze after touch with touchscreen

2010-02-22 Thread Benjamin Meeusen
I have installed Lucid Lynx alpha 2 release, but I need to found i way to make
my touchscreen work. With previous ubuntu releases, I installed
xserver-xorg-input-evtouch and used a fdi policy file for hal, without any
modification to xorg.conf.
Now, out of the box, without evtouch installed, the cursor moves to the upper
left corner at every touch. As soon as I find a way to calibrate my
touchscreen, I can test for freezes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] Re: [Clarkdale] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics

2010-02-22 Thread madbiologist
Sounds like it's time to get busy backporting. Three different
backporting options are currently being discussed on the ubuntu-x
mailing list. I hope it is not left to users to fix this by installing
a LBM (the third option being discussed), although the idea at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2010-February/000751.html
would make this much simpler.

BTW, the newly released Lucid package xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.9.1-1ubuntu6 will make it easier to debug this issue with kernel
2.6.32 - according to
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2010-February/000762.html it
triggers the apport bug info collector when X freezes. Although on
second thought, that is probably of limited use, since we now know that
the issue is fixed with kernel 2.6.33.

There are also a few more Ironlake bug fixes in kernel 2.6.33-rc8 - see
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/ChangeLog-2.6.33-rc8

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-02-22 Thread Richard
Lucid alpha 2 works well for my COMPAQ EVO N610C, EXCEPT for the
notifications which have lines and oddities on them. The System Monitor
works well. I can change visual effects perfectly.

On Karmic, I had to install sun java (not open java) in order to be able
to switch visual effect modes. In Karmic, without sun java, I had to
leave the visual effects in normal, if I went to none visual
effects, my open office would not be able to show buttons and check
boxes correctly. I had to switch to none effects in order to show
videos in Karmic in Open Office Impress. Once in none visual effects
mode, I'd be trapped there, and could not return to normal without a
reinstall.

In Lucid alpha 2 I found open office to function normally. So apart from
the notifications being messy, Lucid seems to solve my problems with
this issue. Attached screenshot of notification issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 342039] [NEW] synaptic crashes x on search

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: synaptic

On Jaunty 32 bit. lg-s1 laptop. Synaptic version is 0.62.5ubuntu1.

When I use the search function of synaptic (the toolbar button, not the
quicksearch text box), in approximately 7 cases out of 10, Synaptics
crashes x and throws me to gdm login. This happens as soon as I finish
typing the search string and press enter (happened with the string
acpi quite a few times, but with others ass well). On the other
occasions search works normally.

I do not know how to further approach this. Starting from terminal does
not help as it crashes x and I do not have the time to see any error
message. I will be happy to supply any required information to sort this
out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-02-22 Thread Steve Langasek
The messy notification in Lucid alpha2 isn't a bug, it's intentional
debugging code for the alpha. Upgrading to current lucid resolves this.

Can others confirmed that the original issue here is resolved in lucid?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-02-22 Thread dicka
I can also confirm that in Lucid Alpha 2 this bug is not an issue
anymore for Dell Inspiron 5100 with Radeon Mobility 7500. Everything
works well including notification pop-ups. The only problem that
appeared again - flash works terribly slow in Firefox. It worked well in
Jaunty, then it became too slow in Karmic, then somewhere in between
Lucid Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 it worked normally. But now after several
updates it works bad again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 288913] Re: Intrepid RC: Nvidia 9500 GT selected settings wont work (wrong line in .nvidia-settings-rc )

2010-02-22 Thread tankdriver
I think this problem has something to do with my external display device.
(Samsung LCD TV)
If i connect my TV via HDMI to my Laptop (Nvidia) the same problem appears.
When I change the displaydevice, everything ok.
I will change the affected Package to nvida-glx-185 because I believe that the
driver does not detect the TV correctly.
My current Workaround is:
Disable Force Full GPU Scaling
Then all settings work as expected.

Same problem here. But it didn't start with a manual reconfiguring of

yesterday).

Please fix this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 73240] Re: German keyboard layout - deadkeys by default

2010-02-22 Thread Vish
@Rolf Leggewie : Thank you for your interest in the papercuts project.
This bug was invalidated in papercuts , since it is a bug affecting only a
particular keyboard layout. Language specific bugs are not papercuts.
Kindly leave the papercut task alone! It is counterproductive.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510004] Re: [lucid regression] random graphics effects after resume from suspend to RAM

2010-02-22 Thread Chase Douglas
Well that's unfortunate. It rejects our theory that X wasn't keeping the
window data around and was leaving that up to the graphics card, which
may have dropped the data during the resume.

So this is really getting close to the we can't support nvidia closed
source driver issue, but perhaps Bryce Harrington has some more
thoughts. This issue is pretty well outside of the kernel team's
expertise at this point.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 501097] Re: [i945gme] xorg crashes after upgrade to 9.10 netbookremix

2010-02-22 Thread cameron pike
I have not seen the problem for a long time.

Updates are installed regularly. It's possible that the problem only
happened when running Aislerot solitare.

I can't try the 10.04 alpha at this time due to local hardware
constraints.

This issue was reported against karmic, so can you confirm if this issue
exists with the most recent Lucid Lynx 10.04 Alpha release? ISO CD

Thanks in advance.

Bug description:
Binary package hint: xorg

X crashes after a long time (45 minutes, minimum, many hours maximum) after
starting. Did not crash for 9.04, only after upgrade to 9.10.

Using netbook remix on ACER Atheros AR5BXB63, 16 GB hdd.

Sorry, but I haven't yet found any pattern / cause that triggers the
crash.

X quits, I get a bunch of messages (too fast to see) on the console, then X
restarts automatically with the login screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 73240] Re: German keyboard layout - deadkeys by default

2010-02-22 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Vish, calm down, OK? And may I kindly ask for a more civilized and
productive form of discussion? It's OK to disagree among adults, you
know?

I'm only going by what the project has defined itself as criteria (see
comment 19). And you don't seem to follow even your own, privately
invented subset of that. Or why did you only hours ago approve a bug in
ibus, a package which is very language specific? There is a difference
between invalid and wontfix.

I understand that none of the three or so bugs I added in the last 24
hours to the papercuts task are going to be accepted. I don't have any
particular issue with that.

you're right - false alarm, not fixed, mine disappeared again, ATI

I have keyboard setup to locate cursor on pressing Ctrl, then navigate

boot.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 73240] Re: German keyboard layout - deadkeys by default

2010-02-22 Thread Vish
@Rolf Leggewie:
In case you missed it. :-) since it is a bug affecting only a particular
keyboard layout. this bug was invalidated as a papercut.

We read through several bugs and if each user starts to re-open bugs [that too
within the same day], since they are affected by it. It becomes harder for us.
:-( We will never get to responding to other bugs or might not even discover
bugs that are really papercuts. Kindly understand.
BTW, I am calm. ;-)
I'v responded this to you privately _and_ in comment#20 as well for the benefit
of others subscribed to this bug as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 73240] Re: German keyboard layout - deadkeys by default

2010-02-22 Thread Vish
Btw , The Ibus bug affects all users and the default system preferences menu
uses the term Ibus preferences which is a design flaw. None of the
preferences menu items are to have the ending preferences. Also the whole Ibus
is not clear in its functions.
Any user can select the option and wonder why they get the error or what Ibus
does.

That is exactly an example of a papercut. Not sure why you think it is
language specific. It is an item in the default install for all
languages.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473098] Re: Switching user makes graphics slow for second user

2010-02-22 Thread Ben Blout
This seems like much more than a wish-list level problem. Many home
computers are used by more than one person, and with this bug, the
usability of Ubuntu is quite diminished.

This will be a problem especially with Lucid if my understanding that
the radeonhd driver is being removed is correct.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] Re: [Clarkdale] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics

2010-02-22 Thread madbiologist
I've also read a report which quoted sources at Taiwanese motherboard
manufacturers (sounds dodgy, I know) as stating that Clarkdale is
forecast to reach 20% of Intel's sales during this quarter. If this is
true it's definitely something we want to support in an LTS release,
preferably sooner rather than later.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473098] Re: Switching user makes graphics slow for second user

2010-02-22 Thread Pauli
This bug is already fixed in KMS driver. If Lucid enables KMS by
default the problem will be fixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-02-22 Thread Tormod Volden
dicka, slow flash might be independent of the graphics driver - try
removing the swfdec-mozilla package (disabling in Firefox is not enough)
if you are using the Adobe flashplugin-installer. Sorry I can't find the
bug reference.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] Re: [Clarkdale] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics

2010-02-22 Thread KeithM
Since I upgraded to 10.04 with the 2.6.33rc7 kernel, I've seen zero
problems until today. (about 12 days)

My machine locked up again with X crashing. It had crashed while one of
the screensavers were running.

This sounds similar to Phoronix's experience where they said things were
better, but still had occasional problems.
