Chris, seems that You have correctly tracked down the problem. Removing
Plymouth fixes the problem for me. I am +1 to mark this bug as duplicate
of bug #522692 with different symptoms.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 529563] Re: Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.

2010-03-01 Thread ankspo71
*Fixed*

I downloaded and burned a copy of ubuntu desktop daily build (lucid-
desktop-i386.iso 28-Feb-2010) and it works as expected. The splash
screen works (including plymouth), my monitor doesn't turn off anymore,
and I am able to run a live session and or install ubuntu, either from
the initial boot menu or from the live desktop.

By the way, I tried to do what was said in response #3 by waiting for
the desktop to finish loading then try to get my screen back, but it
didn't help. Using Ctrl+Alt+F1 (and F2) then Ctrl+Alt+F7 had no effect
on my monitor. My problem must be different from the other user's
because I think the user's monitor didn't get shut off, but mine did.

Live CD output of uname -a:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-14-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Sat Feb 20 05:38:50 UTC 2010 i686
GNU/Linux

thanks,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444154] Re: Mouse pointer gets stuck on the rightmost X screen

2010-03-01 Thread joecarter
Same issue with an Asus 4350 (ATI). Interestingly I could get my mouse
to the other screen with the menus if I created a file, kicked off an
editor and dragged it right. At that point the mouse was working
properly. Dragging was partially broken as it would only drag to halfway
across the problem screen. Enabling/disabling one screen fixed the
problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 528488] Re: [drm] failed to load kernel module nouveau

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I'm not using the nouveau PPA. Recently nouveau arrived in the lucid
repository, and was working fine for me (well done!).
But after a recent update, when gdm starts I get the nv driver, not nouveau.
In Xorg.0.log I see:
[drm] failed to load kernel module nouveau
I discovered the following work around: (1) stop gdm (2) modprobe
lbm_nouveau (3) start gdm
Doing modprobe lbm_nouveau causes the screen to go black, so I actually do
sleep 1m; start gdm
in another console before doing the modprobe. The result is that gdm starts
up with the nouveau
  driver, and all is well.

Here is the initial part of a diff of Xorg.0.log, between the one that failed
to load nouveau, and the
  other that did load nouveau:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 529921] [NEW] Alpha 3 Lucid, external monitor is not working as expected

2010-03-01 Thread Tompalaz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Hi,
I have a MacBook 5,1 generation.
When I try to connect a external screen (a HP w2207) through the Mini Display
port the monitor crashes.
Please look at this picture http://tinyurl.com/yb284wj it will explain it
better than I can do.

What I've tried:
* Enable and disable with Display application
* Disable Gnome-Shell
* Disable Compiz
* Have the screen connected from start. (Doesn't work, bug #529563)
* Run with the stock drivers from Live-CD, then both screens goes blank.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507196] Re: [i945gme] Ubuntu falls back on vesa driver (no screens)

2010-03-01 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Nicholas, the logs you provided are without drm.debug=0x04. From dmesg.txt:
[0.00] Kernel command line:
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.33-020633-generic
root=UUID=33f45800-d1dc-45aa-9098-839ef5477cac ro quiet splash nomodeset
i8042.noloop=1
and Xorg.0.log:
Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.33-020633-generic
root=UUID=33f45800-d1dc-45aa-9098-839ef5477cac ro quiet splash nomodeset
i8042.noloop=1

You should also not use nomodeset, since the intel driver will not work
with that (you may need nomodeset to make the vesa driver work, though).
Did you add nomodeset instead of drm.debug=0x04 by mistake?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432814] Re: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-03-01 Thread DarkV
The issue is that, it's difficult to use. Many (most) laptops does have
only 2 buttons for left and right mouse button. It seems natural to use
something simpler as 2 finger tap to simulate that missing button.
Tapping with 3 fingers is almost impossible as mouse pointer often skips
and misses (but that can be just me cause of my lazy fingers).

2010-03-01 Thread Liam Manderson
Since my last post I have been trying out the ubuntu 10.04 alpha3 live

sudo sh -c echo 1926 0006 /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbtouchscreen/new_id

I get the touchscreen registering as event7 and I can get output via cat
and evtest. Unlike in 9.10, the when I touch the screen it does trigger
cursor movement and clicks but once again they seem to be more or less
random. The only pattern being that it starts and stops when I touch
the screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 499102] Re: [i845g] kernel 2-6-32-9 xorg black screen intel video

2010-03-01 Thread jerrylamos
Lucid A3 2.6.32-14 only runs with nomodeset and vesa. With default
modeset and default xorg for i845 video graphics hangs up solid in
seconds:

Linux version 2.6.32-14-generic (bui...@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.4.3
(Ubuntu 4.4.3-2ubuntu2) ) #20-Ubuntu SMP Sat Feb 20 05:38:50 UTC 2010

Can't do ssh or anything else to get debug info.

In contrast, recent install from mini .iso karmic 2.6.31-19 runs fine
with default modeset on and with default xorg. This is a multi boot so
it's easy to try one or the other.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 267269] Re: system GUI turn upside down when visual effects changed from none to normal

2010-03-01 Thread Tim Towers
I can confirm that I have this problem on a Samsung N150 pine trail laptop
(Intel graphics chipset).
Since all new accounts are set up with normal (metacity) visual effects they
all suffer from this graphical corruption. Logging in with a Gnome Failsafe
session allows you to disable visual effects on an individual basis, but
earlier in the thread Alkis mentioned LTSP and in a posting on their forum
provided a command line workaround that solves the issue for all users:

sudo gconftool-2 --direct --config-source
xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type string --set
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager metacity

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507148] Re: [lucid] desktop runs out of video memory on ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

2010-03-01 Thread Jamie Strandboge
meh, as soon as I submitted that last comment, I opened a gnome-
terminal, typed dmesg and compiz crashed. This time all that is in dmesg
is:

[ 738.880732] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation

This is with KMS, with compiz and with EXA (no xorg.conf).

For my own records or anyone trying to get it to crash somewhat quickly, it
seems this will do it (eventually-- I don't have a simple reproducer yet):
open firefox
open OO.o Writer
open OO.o Draw
open Gimp
open gnome-terminal
open a second gnome-terminal, and send a lot of text to it (like dmesg)

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 513950] Re: [lucid] xorg froze after disabled KMS and enabling compiz on ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

 Hi Jamie,

We're not going to have this fixed for Alpha 3. However, I took the
matter of this bug up with David Airlie upstream, who told us we need to
pull the latest DRM code from the .33 kernel in order to fix this bug
and many like it. It seems a lot of kms stuff got rushed into .32 and
is pretty buggy, especially with older or unusual hardware.

Understood.

One thing you could do for testing, would be to install and try Andy's
drm backport and give me feedback on it:

   http://people.canonical.com/~apw/drm-backport-lucid/

I ended up using the one that he asked me to in bug LP: #507148. compiz
still crashed (see report).

Thanks for the follow up. :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524299] Re: [GM45] Can't use external monitor at full resolution

2010-03-01 Thread David Kedves
Hm... i checked with the 2.6.33 (non rc) kernel...

Not solved my problem, but the result is a bit better,
now i can't see the OUT OF RANGE message on my external screen while my
ubuntu booting,
but now i can set only 1024x768 as maximum resolution

And seems the frequency detection a bit better (with the current [ubuntu]
kernel 2.6.32.14 its sets to 800x...@85hz by default), now my monitor working
in proper frequency... but i still can't use it at maximal resolution
(except if i plug-in my monitor after boot-up...)

I'll try to check the logs (maybe i'll find some useful...)
(I attached my Xorg.log with 2.6.33 kernel...)
