I have uploaded xserver-xorg-video-intel with the backported fix for both Karmic and Lucid to my standard PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard/ . [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549447] [NEW] eGalax touchscreen configured as tablet
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev from Xorg.0.log: (II) eGalax Inc. Touch: Configuring as tablet The touchscreen is a 7 resistive vga monitor. Every touch makes the cursor move to the upper left corner and register the click there. My calibration values, coming from an ubuntu 8.10 installation using evtouch, are loaded through a udev rule. Changing them or using no values at all for calibration does not change anything. If I install the eGalax driver (http://home.eeti.com.tw/web20/eGalaxTouchDriver/linuxDriver.htm), the device is listed twice in xinput list and if I disable the device using evdev, I can calibrate the screen using the eGalax tool and everythings works. There is also a lot of refactoring going on, which probably accounts for most of the size of the patch, and unfortunately also makes it tough to review in detail. But... Since this backport was pretty straightforward, I've gone ahead and packaged and set up a PPA of this here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/whitehttps://edge.launchpad.net/%7Ebryceharrington/+archive/white If 8xx users can test this and say that it gives a perfect fix to Xv support (i.e. no secondary issues), AND we can get some 9xx users to verify it causes no regressions, then we can look at including this in Lucid. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479839] Re: Synaptics Touchpad on Dell Inspiron 2650 not always working after restart
My touchpad sometimes works, and sometimes not. The touchpad buttons always work though, and usb mouse always does. I think this log in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file is relevant: (WW) AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint can't grab event device, errno=16 Anytime the touchpad does not work, I get this error in the log file. I have the feeling is related to the event number assignation, as shown in the logfile: (**) Option Device /dev/input/event9 I think it could be related to conflictive event assignment, so maybe the touchpad event is sometimes blocked by another device grabbing the event. In any case, sometimes when it is not working, it is linked to event 9 and sometimes to other event numbers. How could I check the current device VS event assignment ? You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gdm Similar to 430494 and 447226 but not exactly the same. After I upgraded to karmic gdm has been behaving strangely. When I start up the computer I get lock-up, blank screen and no response from the keyboard. After few reboots (4 - 6) I usually get the CL login. That is, after few seconds of the white logo splash-screen the computer switches to text mode and I get: *Stopping the Firestarter firewall. *Stopping NTP sever ntp *Starting the NTP server ntp and after that the normal CL login. I have tried to start the gdm from the command line, but it does not work. If I try to start it as a normal user I get: ** (gdm-binary:2896): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager: Connection :1.100 is not allowed to own the service org.gnome.DisplayManager due to security policies in the configuration file ** (gdm-binary:2896): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out If I tried to start it as root (sudo gdm) I got: gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038765 seconds gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.037873 seconds gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.040206 seconds gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.037905 seconds gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038138 seconds gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038734 seconds gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors I found that this is due to the /tmp/.X0-lock if I delete it I can run the gdm, but it behaves exactly like it does when I start the machine in a normal way, i.e. locks up. I have learned, by change, that the only way to get the gdm to start is to login to the CLI, delete the /tmp/.X0-lock file, run startx as myself, stop the GUI by login me out using the System - Log out *user* menu function and then run sudo gdm. Hi Bryce, I currently have two possible workarounds : nomodeset or booting the Karmic kernel (that I kept for that kind of situation). For me, there's no problem of course. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5
I believe one of the problems with this bug's fix is that it can't be nominated for Lucid because the option for Lucid is not available when clicking Nominate. Another problem is that there's not anyone whose job it is to manage the project of fixing this bug. Fixing this problem involves a number of people from different projects to work together because: * The remote desktop solution in Ubuntu uses the VNC backend which can't read from hardware accelerated displays. The VNC project guys would have to fix this and it would probably involve a lot of work. * There isn't currently a solution for remote display of hardware rendered displays that can be easily integrated into Ubuntu. The Ubuntu project coordinators would have to find a useful product for integration. * NVIDIA can't fix the problem because it's not a problem with their display driver or their hardware -- that stuff is all doing its job as it should. While I agree that a fix would be good, the fix isn't so much a fix as creation of an entirely new feature. In the meantime I propose one of these workarounds: * Inform the user when they turn on the remote desktop feature, that it won't work if desktop effects is turned on. * Alternatively, the remote desktop software could be scripted such that when someone connects to a machine that has desktop effects enabled, the effects could be automatically switched off for that remote control session, and then switched back on after disconnect. For those who need remote control of their Ubuntu machines, you'll just have to live without desktop effects until one of the above solutions has been implemented, and I'm speculating that it won't happen for some time because it seems that the Ubuntu project coordinators don't care about the 30% of the user experience that consists of aesthetics enough to work out a reasonable solution. -- Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549645] [NEW] Summary of sis graphics bugreports
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis Since there are several reports on these bugs in xserver-xorg-driver-sis I give a summary of the reported problems and some of the suggested solutions. SIS does not provide all required information to make good drivers for all SIS graphical cards. Hence you might meet problems with some monitors (resolutions, modes) and you will not get 3D acceleration. bug 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well for all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bugs 523749, 301958, 281454, 291294, etc and various questions) Minor bug 2: In man sis the link http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml should be replaced by http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml Discussions on internet, especially Ubuntuforums show that many, sometimes conflicting, advices are given which seem to work for only part of the users. The following advices are given: - Check http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 for supported SiS/XGI graphics chips and video bridges. - Also check what input is used by the monitor. If you have a choice between analog and digital input you may have to use analog (see tables on the same link which show that for higher resolutions only analog works). For that you use a VGA plug (15 pin D-sub). It is found on most (if not all) machines including laptops for primary VGA output, thus driven by CRT1. If it is not present you may need a DVI-VGA adapter or to remove some pins. - It may be necessary to configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you do not have this file you can generate one with Xorg -configure while gdm is not active. Do this before installing new drivers and check for modifications after installing new drivers. Especially the choice of the driver in the Section Device may be important. E.g.: Section Device Identifier devname # your device Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671 - It may be necessary to reduce Shared Memory in the BIOS (see bug 291294 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- sis/+bug/291294) - If needed, download the drivers sisimedia and/or sis671 from http://ncc-1701a.homelinux.net/~linux-sis/index.php?page=Downloads (Available in Lucid?) - When you switch monitors it may be needed to completely remove (purge) one of the sis-drivers and reinstall it and/or to reconfigure xorg.conf and/or the BIOS (e.g. see bug 523749). - The sisfb module is mentioned also. E.g.(Bug #264769): sudo modprobe sisfb AND edit your xorg.conf at: Section Device add there an: Option UseFBDev true Another example: add video=sisfb as kernel argument on menu.list and later grub.cfg (Bug #530554). Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules My tip: Before you take any actions read man sis, visit http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Video, and search ubuntuforums and launchpad with sis graphics and the name of your version of Ubuntu to check your method. Remember that tips may not be valid in your case because the hardware and software configuration of your pc may not be equal to that of the tipper. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-sis (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Summary of sis graphics bugreports https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/549645 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-sis in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Screen origin shifted to center, screen wraps, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid with openchrome driver
Georg Duffner - thank you. It's possible that this is a problem in the kernel framebuffer or in some other Lucid component relating to the newer kernel. I still have kernel 2.6.31-20-generic in my Lucid /boot directory, and was able to boot into this. The login screen came up properly, and the Gnome screen is now properly aligned. Possible reasons this works: 1. The framebuffer is different between Karmic and Lucid kernels 2. Some component of Lucid wasn't started because of the old kernel - there were some screen messages during boot which might indicate that. Such a non-started component may have been the cause of the problem. -- [K8M800] Screen origin shifted to center, screen wraps, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid with openchrome driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495553 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
