2010-03-27 Thread Jesse
this bug is also present in lucid beta 1 (plus all updates) amd64 on a HP
Compaq CQ20.
Steps to reproduce: log in, run a few apps (gvim, firefox), close lid (power
settings: suspend), and then open. voila: a login prompt instead of screen lock
prompt.

Good, that probably means that I did't make a mistake in backporting or
building. Since this version of the driver is identical to the Lucid
one except that it corrects some instructions that will hang the GPU if
the show up, everything that works with the Lucid driver should also
work with this driver.

I will update the master bug description to point to my PPA.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-03-27 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is a MASTER bug report, i.e. not a real bug report, but a tool to
  help manage other bug reports.

Most bug reports on i845 are probably due to the CPU/GPU incoherency
problem that is now consolidated upstream at
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26345 . For now, we mark all
automatically reported GPU lockups as duplicates of this unless there is
  a reason not to.

- There is now a potential fix upstream. Brian Rogers has packaged the
- latest xserver-xorg-video-intel from upstream which contains this fix at
- https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/experimental/ . It would be
- nice if you could test this and report ON YOUR OWN BUG REPORT[*] if this
- fixes the problem, helps somewhat but it still hangs, makes no
- difference, or fails in a completely new and exciting way.
+ There is now a potential fix upstream. A driver package with the
+ backported fix is available in the PPA
+ https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard . It would be nice if
+ you could test this and report ON YOUR OWN BUG REPORT[*] if this fixes

There is a similar master bug report for i855 at bug 541511.

[*] We want this information to follow your bug report if we later
unduplicate it. So just ignore that yellow box telling you not to
comment unless you think the duplicate status is wrong. An email with
the comment will anyway be sent to all the subscribers of the master bug
  report.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845g] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-03-27 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I have uploaded xserver-xorg-video-intel with the backported fix for
both Karmic and Lucid to my standard PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard/ . If I didn't make
any mistake in the backporting or building, there should be no
additional problems with this ones compared to the standard Ubuntu
packages, since the fix is the only thing that has changed.

@developers: I'm not too familiar with quilt, so I edited the source
tree directly instead of adding a patch in debian/patches, but for
testing purposes, this should be no problem. The only change from the
commit patch is to change the pixmap to pPixmap and change the
indentation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549447] [NEW] eGalax touchscreen configured as tablet

2010-03-27 Thread Benjamin Meeusen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

from Xorg.0.log: (II) eGalax Inc. Touch: Configuring as tablet
The touchscreen is a 7 resistive vga monitor.

Every touch makes the cursor move to the upper left corner and register the
click there.
My calibration values, coming from an ubuntu 8.10 installation using evtouch,
are loaded through a udev rule. Changing them or using no values at all for
calibration does not change anything.

If I install the eGalax driver
(http://home.eeti.com.tw/web20/eGalaxTouchDriver/linuxDriver.htm), the device
is listed twice in xinput list and if I disable the device using evdev, I can
calibrate the screen using the eGalax tool and everythings works. If I don't
disable the device using evdev, everything works too, except that every touch
is preceded by a touch to the upper left corner.
But I'd rather get it working using only evdev.

I have done a complete dist-upgrade to Lucid, so I should be using

- resolution is automatically set correctly.

2010/3/25 Bryce Harrington br...@bryceharrington.org

Well, there was a set of discrete Xv fixes which went in after 2.9.0 was
cut but before the massive refactoring work for removing UMS hit. It
comprised 17 patches total, which I've unified into the patch attached
 here.

 $ diffstat debian/patches/102_xv-fix-8xx-video.patch

This is mostly confined to the i8xx code, but there are some changes to
the 9xx video code, which alter the algorithmic logic, so I can't say
with 100% certainty that the changes are going to be regression-free for
9xx, which makes me reticent to pull this in for Lucid. There is also a
lot of refactoring going on, which probably accounts for most of the
size of the patch, and unfortunately also makes it tough to review in
 detail.

But... Since this backport was pretty straightforward, I've gone ahead and
packaged and set up a PPA of this here:
 https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/whitehttps://edge.launchpad.net/%7Ebryceharrington/+archive/white

If 8xx users can test this and say that it gives a perfect fix to Xv
support (i.e. no secondary issues), AND we can get some 9xx users to
verify it causes no regressions, then we can look at including this in
Lucid. Otherwise, 8xx users can use this ppa or

I've tried various settings in xorg.conf, with no luck. (XvPreferOverlay,

 [Update]

 From the Q4 anouncment [1]:
Video overlay support with KMS is now supported in xserver-xorg-video-intel
2.10.0. This currently requires Linux 2.6.33, but a backport to 2.6.32
(Lucid version) is available from [2]. Daniel Vetter intends to support
this backport which is intended for distros that use kernel 2.6.32 [3].
Although the main code is in the kernel, intel driver 2.10.0 is apparently
 required [4].

2010-03-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

KDE won't start with fglrx drivers.
GNOME works properly. KDE works with installed (vesa?) driver.

never solidify as they normally do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2010-03-27 Thread Dan Burke
Using Nouveau does _NOT_ fix this bug, Nouveau does not support Compiz.

Can a developer PLEASE chime in on this? This worked in 8.10 and has
been broken since. We were told it would be fixed with Lucid and, a
month away from Lucid's release, it's still not fixed. Could someone
please at least say No, this will not be fixed instead of forcing
people to chime in with half baked solutions and leave us guessing?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2010-03-27 Thread AndreK
I think Nvidia should do something about this.
Assuming the problem is partially because the driver is not open_source, would
it help if I switched to recent ATI hardware ?

I have managed to reproduce this on karmic; once I can confirm that it's
reliably reproduceable then I'll try on lucid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 536918] Re: [i945] When I have my laptop on battery power and I close and reopen lid X goes into low-res mode

2010-03-27 Thread Emmanuel Pacaud
I think I have the same issue. Suspend/resume using the panel menu works fine,
but suspend fails if I close the lid.
I get mainly a black screen when I reopen the lid, and sometime I get the low
resolution dialog.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549559] [NEW] boot black screen

2010-03-27 Thread Albert
Public bug reported:

is 'nomodeset' option.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549576] [NEW] Quadrapassel results in X crashing

2010-03-27 Thread Robert Y
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

In Quadrapassel set the Starting level sufficiently high (i.e. level 20)
so that the bricks will fall fast and end the game quickly. Exit
Quadrapassel and X will crash upon exiting Quadrapassel and throw a
bunch of errors in Xorg.0.log.

Sometimes it takes a couple of tries of the above procedure to crash X
but it is guaranteed to crash X everytime I run through these steps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479839] Re: Synaptics Touchpad on Dell Inspiron 2650 not always working after restart

2010-03-27 Thread oooh
My touchpad sometimes works, and sometimes not. The touchpad buttons
always work though, and usb mouse always does.

I think this log in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file is relevant:

(WW) AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint can't grab event device, errno=16

Anytime the touchpad does not work, I get this error in the log file. I
have the feeling is related to the event number assignation, as shown in
the logfile:

(**) Option Device /dev/input/event9

I think it could be related to conflictive event assignment, so maybe
the touchpad event is sometimes blocked by another device grabbing the
event. In any case, sometimes when it is not working, it is linked to
event 9 and sometimes to other event numbers.

How could I check the current device VS event assignment ? I think that
information may help us.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549601] [NEW] Radeon: No Fullscreen-Games with KMS enabled

2010-03-27 Thread Thorsten Reinbold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

With KMS enabled, no Fullscreen 3D games are possible. I only get a
white Screen, the System does not respond. I can change to tty1, but I'm
not able to kill the hanging Application. Only restart is possible.

When disabling KMS via radeon.modeset=0 on Grub, everything is fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 482841] [NEW] gdm does not start

2010-03-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

Similar to 430494 and 447226 but not exactly the same. After I upgraded
to karmic gdm has been behaving strangely.

When I start up the computer I get lock-up, blank screen and no response from
the keyboard. After few reboots (4 - 6) I usually get the CL login. That is,
after few seconds of the white logo splash-screen the computer switches to text
mode and I get:
   *Stopping the Firestarter firewall.
   *Stopping NTP sever ntp
   *Starting the NTP server ntp

and after that the normal CL login. I have tried to start the gdm from
the command line, but it does not work. If I try to start it as a normal
user I get:

   ** (gdm-binary:2896): WARNING **: Failed to acquire
org.gnome.DisplayManager: Connection :1.100 is not allowed to own the
service org.gnome.DisplayManager due to security policies in the
configuration file

** (gdm-binary:2896): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out

If I tried to start it as root (sudo gdm) I got:
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038765 seconds
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.037873 seconds
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.040206 seconds
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.037905 seconds
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038138 seconds
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038734 seconds
gdm-binary[2798]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X
display failures reached: check X server log for errors

I found that this is due to the /tmp/.X0-lock if I delete it I can run
the gdm, but it behaves exactly like it does when I start the machine in
a normal way, i.e. locks up.

I have learned, by change, that the only way to get the gdm to start is
to login to the CLI, delete the /tmp/.X0-lock file, run startx as
myself, stop the GUI by login me out using the System - Log out *user*
menu function and then run sudo gdm.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world )

2010-03-27 Thread Lionel Dricot
Hi Bryce,

I currently have two possible workarounds : nomodeset or booting the
Karmic kernel (that I kept for that kind of situation).

For me, there's no problem of course. I use beta release to find such
bugs but I hope it will be fixed before the final release. The strange
point is that it seems I'm the only one affected by that bug.

Thanks for your good work :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2010-03-27 Thread Josh
I believe one of the problems with this bug's fix is that it can't be
nominated for Lucid because the option for Lucid is not available when
clicking Nominate.

Another problem is that there's not anyone whose job it is to manage the
project of fixing this bug.

Fixing this problem involves a number of people from different projects
to work together because:

* The remote desktop solution in Ubuntu uses the VNC backend which can't
read from hardware accelerated displays. The VNC project guys would
have to fix this and it would probably involve a lot of work.

* There isn't currently a solution for remote display of hardware
rendered displays that can be easily integrated into Ubuntu. The Ubuntu
project coordinators would have to find a useful product for
integration.

* NVIDIA can't fix the problem because it's not a problem with their
display driver or their hardware -- that stuff is all doing its job as
it should.

While I agree that a fix would be good, the fix isn't so much a fix
as creation of an entirely new feature.

In the meantime I propose one of these workarounds:

* Inform the user when they turn on the remote desktop feature, that it
won't work if desktop effects is turned on.

* Alternatively, the remote desktop software could be scripted such that
when someone connects to a machine that has desktop effects enabled, the
effects could be automatically switched off for that remote control
session, and then switched back on after disconnect.

For those who need remote control of their Ubuntu machines, you'll just
have to live without desktop effects until one of the above solutions
has been implemented, and I'm speculating that it won't happen for some
time because it seems that the Ubuntu project coordinators don't care
about the 30% of the user experience that consists of aesthetics enough
to work out a reasonable solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549645] [NEW] Summary of sis graphics bugreports

2010-03-27 Thread Heinvandijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

Since there are several reports on these bugs in xserver-xorg-driver-sis
I give a summary of the reported problems and some of the suggested
solutions. SIS does not provide all required information to make good
drivers for all SIS graphical cards. Hence you might meet problems with
some monitors (resolutions, modes) and you will not get 3D acceleration.

bug 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well for
all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bugs 523749, 301958, 281454, 291294, etc and
various questions)
Minor bug 2: In man sis the link http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml
should be replaced by http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml

Discussions on internet, especially Ubuntuforums show that many, sometimes
conflicting, advices are given which seem to work for only part of the users.
The following advices are given:
- Check http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 for supported
SiS/XGI graphics chips and video bridges.

- Also check what input is used by the monitor. If you have a choice
between analog and digital input you may have to use analog (see tables
on the same link which show that for higher resolutions only analog
works). For that you use a VGA plug (15 pin D-sub). It is found on most
(if not all) machines including laptops for primary VGA output, thus
driven by CRT1. If it is not present you may need a DVI-VGA adapter or
to remove some pins.

- It may be necessary to configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you do not have this
file you can generate one with Xorg -configure while gdm is not active. Do this
before installing new drivers and check for modifications after installing new
drivers. Especially the choice of the driver in the Section Device may be
important. E.g.:
Section Device
 Identifier devname # your device
Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671

- It may be necessary to reduce Shared Memory in the BIOS (see bug
291294 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
sis/+bug/291294)

- If needed, download the drivers sisimedia and/or sis671 from
 http://ncc-1701a.homelinux.net/~linux-sis/index.php?page=Downloads (Available
in Lucid?)

- When you switch monitors it may be needed to completely remove (purge)
one of the sis-drivers and reinstall it and/or to reconfigure xorg.conf
and/or the BIOS (e.g. see bug 523749).

- The sisfb module is mentioned also. E.g.(Bug #264769):
sudo modprobe sisfb
AND
edit your xorg.conf
at:
Section Device add there an:
Option UseFBDev true
Another example: add video=sisfb as kernel argument on menu.list and later
grub.cfg (Bug #530554).
Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules

My tip: Before you take any actions read man sis, visit
http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Video, and search ubuntuforums and
launchpad with sis graphics and the name of your version of Ubuntu to
check your method. Remember that tips may not be valid in your case
because the hardware and software configuration of your pc may not be
equal to that of the tipper.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549658] [NEW] Available Resolution incorrectly listed

2010-03-27 Thread Amrik Singh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu ver 10.04 Beta. Available resolution list incorrectly includes
1360 x 768. When this resolution is selected the screen either goes
blank or comes back as 1024x768, however all the enhanced effects are
then disabled i.e. any terminal window is no longer transparent.
Rebooting solves issue of disabled effects. The 1360x768 still shows as
an available resolution. Machine is running ATI Radeon 9000 Graphics
card.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 541492 ***

Today my system is currently up and running for more than seven and a half
hours (not always manned).
But have not encountered one single crash! it is looking very hopeful!
Thanks Geir for the effort put in this.

One other thing I noticed (don't know if this has to do with the fix),
but I can now use the numeric keypad on my keyboard to enter numbers
when using the NX client. I was not able to do this before in Lucid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Screen origin shifted to center, screen wraps, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid with openchrome driver

2010-03-27 Thread Peter Belew
Georg Duffner - thank you. It's possible that this is a problem in the
kernel framebuffer or in some other Lucid component relating to the
newer kernel.

I still have kernel 2.6.31-20-generic in my Lucid /boot directory, and
was able to boot into this. The login screen came up properly, and the
Gnome screen is now properly aligned. Possible reasons this works:

1. The framebuffer is different between Karmic and Lucid kernels
2. Some component of Lucid wasn't started because of the old kernel - there
were some screen messages during boot which might indicate that. Such a
non-started component may have been the cause of the problem.
