[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 542639] Re: 10.04 crashed during boot (wrong disply resolution)

2010-04-02 Thread ZeroBeat
Since daily-live (lucid desktop amd64 01.04.2010) first boot-screen uses wrong
resolution (attached picture).
Error message are not shown during boot anymore (but they're still in log).
When boot up sequence switches to the X display, the screen becomes corrupted.
There are portions of the screen from the last time the system ran, but they
are scattered across the screen. I can hear the Ubuntu startup sounds, so the
system is coming up.
(take a look at #542950).
But I can switch to console and enter commands.
blacklist=vga16fb didn't work
nouveau.modeset=0 didn't work
Best regards
ZB

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510001] Re: [lucid alpha-2][radeon] Color depth degradation after resume (ATI Mobility Radeon X700)

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
What looks to be different between the two systems is the monitors,
which seem to be a rev number different. This sounds minor but the EDID
presented by the monitors are coming through quite a bit differently.
I'm not sure if that is what is causing the difference in behavior but I
could certainly imagine it could. I do notice one error in the EDID
parsing bits:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553825] [NEW] nouveau: hangs on boot if second monitor is present

2010-04-02 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Booting to the Ubuntu Alpha 3, Beta 1 and 20100331.2 Live CDs, Ubuntu
hardlocks when plymouth should transition from the bootsplash to the X
session (the bootscreen stays up, appears completed but has stopped
animating, while the disc reads a bit longer, before eventually
hardlocking). This occurs consistently on every boot. Both of my
displays are connected by DVI, but I am unsure if this makes any
difference.

I workaround the issue by disconnecting my secondary display, complete
the installation, boot into the OS, apply any pending updates, reboot,
and install the restricted NVIDIA driver. Once installed, I can
reattach the display and boot into Ubuntu without issue.

For reference, I am affected by Bug #43710, which provides a similar
experience under the old 'nv' driver for Ubuntu pre-Lucid. That bug was
closed as 'wontfix'. However, under that issue, I wouldn't hardlock --
I could press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and the computer would eventually reboot.

I would think this would be a blocking bug.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-mga

 I have a Matrox G450 dual-head. When I start Xorg with a second screen
enabled, it errors with the message:
MGA(0): Unable to map BAR 0. Invalid argument (22)

This problem is referenced elsewhere on the internet, so far without a
 solution:
 https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+question/49251
 http://www.linux-club.de/viewtopic.php?f=48t=97381

If I disable the second screen, it starts up fine (but with the same image
on both monitors). I realize Xinerama is deprecated in favor of xrandr but
the version of the mga driver in intrepid doesn't seem to support xrandr
 configuration -- http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12 suggests
that version 1.9.99 of the mga driver is needed to support randr, and
following the directions on that page does not have any effect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 254908] Re: [HD 3470] Installation Problem

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

I've Asus M51Se240DV notebook which uses ATI Radeon Mobilitiy HD 3470
Graphic card and 3GB DDR2 RAM. In both of installations, 64bit and
32bit, it gives an error and drops to console. It cannot start X server.
I couldn't remember all of the error message, but it is about X server.
The graphic card cannot be identified by the X server. I've tried to
change Driver option to mesa and ati but it again doesn't work. Also,
I've tried installation with alternate cd, however, it cannot start
after the installation and dropped to console. I've googled internet,
but i couldn't find anything working.

but system starts without corrupted screen and works fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 539772] Re: Lucid 2.6.32-16 crashed to login screen - miCopyRegion

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Unfortunately ati doesn't have quite the wealth of tools that -intel
does for debugging. What it does have is in the radeontools package.
radeontool can be used for r5xx and older cards, and avivotool for r6xx
and newer. Those tools essentially give you a GPU dump. I don't know
if that's sufficient to debug these issues, but if you collect a GPU
dump when it's frozen, and then again when it is not frozen, and include
both files, sometimes those give clues.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535653] Re: System freeze during X start-up and while X is running, but only on battery.

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright I'm going to go ahead and guess that something is busted with
your power management stuff, which causes a kernel lockup of some sort.
The reason it doesn't lock until X starts may have more to do with some
client app kicking in after being triggered by the desktop startup
processes.

Anyway, so no real evidence so far that it's actually X.org faulting
here. If you can't get into the system via ssh or anything then it
really must be a kernel bug of some sort.

innumerable bug fixes. Beta-2 is coming up, if you could either upgrade

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553784] Re: Radeon X1300 AGP: 3D performance much slower after upgrade to Lucid

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Fairly sure this is a known issue upstream, but I don't see any other
existing bug report open about 3D performance on -ati.

Meanwhile, as a workaround you can try disabiling KMS (see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting for guidance on this) which I
think should restore your performance to karmic levels.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 552643] Re: After trying to open a window, system gets stuck, but can still switch to tty

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
What are the error messages you see every 2 seconds? Can you paste them
in?

You mention a big white box, can you attach a photograph of the screen
as an example (just in case there is some additional clues).

Also try turning off Desktop Effects and see if that affects the issue -
white windows suggest a rendering issue.

Im in lucid Beta 1. I manage to get to the Desktop without problems. I
can explore the menus from the panel and unfold the calendar, but when I

clicking doesnt work anymore, even though I can move the mouse for a
while. I can also go back to the tty, even thought I keep getting
messages of error every 2 seconds which makes it quite annoying...

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
You have nvidia-current installed and it is messing up your GL
libraries. Sounds like you need some tech support to restore your
system's configuration.

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting and the pages about nvidia
and fglrx interfering with other drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553190] Re: Xorg crashes on usb storage unmount/disconnect

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Let's be optimistic and assume it got fixed. If it still reproduces in
the next few days you can reopen the bug.

Btw with crashes we really need to have full backtraces - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance with this.

However, I suspect this may not be an X bug. filesystem
unmount/disconnect does not generally affect X in any notable way, so
it's probably more likely that the fs change caused a kernel fault, and
X crashed just as an innocent bystander. This could explain why no
backtrace was listed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 545201] Re: [i845] GPU lockup da27380f (PGTBL_ER: 0x00000049)

2010-04-02 Thread useResa
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 541492 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541492

In the Master bug #541492 I read the following:
However, I think it's pretty well known at this point that upstream's
code is fairly buggered with i845, so if you have that video card, if
you have a freeze it's probably not worth putting in more bug reports
about it at this point. You can track the upstream bug report as it
progresses, and help them with testing things. Be aware you'll probably
be expected to patch and build new kernels in order to do this.

Beyond that, assuming a patch doesn't come to light, the one other knob
we have to fiddle with at the distro level is to blacklist KMS from this
hardware. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting for more info
about this and how to configure it off (basically boot i915.modeset=0)
so it uses UMS instead.

Do I understand correctly that it is being advised to turn *off* KMS and check
whether the freeze issues are over then?
In the Wiki I read it is possible to turn off KMS and thus reverting to UMS.
But also the option of using framebuffering is mentioned. Which option is best
to test?

Please advise

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475466] Re: [RC410] detects AGP on a PCIE card

2010-04-02 Thread Apoorv Parle
Sorry, my mistake.
The driver is alright.
It detects the card and displays the message AGP Card Detected. But after
that it checks if it is a from RS400 family and corrects it to CARD_PCI, but
does not display any message regarding this change.

The DRI was not starting due to the KMS.
By adding radeon.modeset=0 while booting, the DRI started up fine.

But I would suggest the developers to display a message PCI Card forced
for RS400 family when the checking for RS400 is done.

Is there any disadvantage of setting radeon.modeset=0.

Due to this problem, the graphics are not working in Live CD. Anyway to
fix this?

Hi omanni,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 489966] Re: ATI Rage XL - no 3D acceleration (drm)

2010-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Joseph,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

I cant take an snapshot since the system becomes unusable. Imagine any
kind of window in the desktop. The now replace it for a white square
(plain like that) of the same size. That's what appears.

And of course, Compiz is OFF.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553784] Re: Radeon X1300 AGP: 3D performance much slower after upgrade to Lucid

2010-04-02 Thread Tpugliese
Thanks for the suggestion, Bryce. I turned KMS off and 3d performance
was restored. Unfortunately this machine generally has multiple user
sessions logged in and with KMS off I encounter this bug when I switch
to another user:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/473098

Getting around that bug was one of the reasons I updated to begin with.
At this point I am stuck with a choice of having multiple user sessions
or working 3D. Since other people need to use the computer, but 3d is
not mandatory, I'm going to keep KMS on for now. If anyone can post a
link to a relevant upstream issue that would be great. Also if there is
any more system information I can provide, let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553784] Re: Radeon X1300 AGP: 3D performance much slower after upgrade to Lucid

2010-04-02 Thread Tpugliese
One interesting piece of information: I forgot to disable visual effects
when I rebooted after re-enabling KMS. When I logged in, performance
was not that bad. It is noticeably slower than with UMS but still
usable. No 1-2s freezes when moving a window as happened when I enabled
visual effects after logging in. I have not seen this before but it
seems to suggest an order of operations issue. I'll leave visual
effects on for now and see if it ever reverts behavior.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

+ I have usb keyboard Genius KKB-2050HS with the usb hub.
When I press the caps lock, scroll lock or num lock keys, my system hangs and
my keyboard is not working. When I reconnect my keyboard, everything works
nice. Then if I press this keys again, this problem repeated.
When I disabled the keyboard's leds, this problem was solved. But I had to
abandon the indicators.

  How to disable keyboard leds:
  I edit /usr/share/X11/xkb/compat/ledcaps file:
  code
  default partial xkb_compatibility caps_lock   {
-indicator Caps Lock {
-!allowExplicit;

  code

2010-04-02 Thread Jacek Zmudzki
After the latest updates I can boot to Recovery Menu.
How can I start the safe graphics mode? I Can't find it nowhere.
I tried to run apport-collect 544088 in text-mode root-shell but I can't login

The continue Button is not selectable, only cancel. Perhaps it needs
