[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 542639] Re: 10.04 crashed during boot (wrong disply resolution)
Since daily-live (lucid desktop amd64 01.04.2010) first boot-screen uses wrong resolution (attached picture). Error message are not shown during boot anymore (but they're still in log). When boot up sequence switches to the X display, the screen becomes corrupted. There are portions of the screen from the last time the system ran, but they are scattered across the screen. I can hear the Ubuntu startup sounds, so the system is coming up. (take a look at #542950). But I can switch to console and enter commands. blacklist=vga16fb didn't work nouveau.modeset=0 didn't work Best regards ZB ** Attachment added: boot.jpg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42859869/boot.jpg -- 10.04 crashed during boot (wrong disply resolution) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/542639 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510001] Re: [lucid alpha-2][radeon] Color depth degradation after resume (ATI Mobility Radeon X700)
What looks to be different between the two systems is the monitors, which seem to be a rev number different. This sounds minor but the EDID presented by the monitors are coming through quite a bit differently. I'm not sure if that is what is causing the difference in behavior but I could certainly imagine it could. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553825] [NEW] nouveau: hangs on boot if second monitor is present
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Booting to the Ubuntu Alpha 3, Beta 1 and 20100331.2 Live CDs, Ubuntu hardlocks when plymouth should transition from the bootsplash to the X session (the bootscreen stays up, appears completed but has stopped animating, while the disc reads a bit longer, before eventually hardlocking). This occurs consistently on every boot. Both of my displays are connected by DVI, but I am unsure if this makes any difference. I workaround the issue by disconnecting my secondary display, complete the installation, boot into the OS, apply any pending updates, reboot, and install the restricted NVIDIA driver. Once installed, I can reattach the display and boot into Ubuntu without issue. For reference, I am affected by Bug #43710, which provides a similar experience under the old 'nv' driver for Ubuntu pre-Lucid. That bug was closed as 'wontfix'. However, under that issue, I wouldn't hardlock -- I could press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and the computer would eventually reboot. I would think this would be a blocking bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 539772] Re: Lucid 2.6.32-16 crashed to login screen - miCopyRegion
Unfortunately ati doesn't have quite the wealth of tools that -intel does for debugging. What it does have is in the radeontools package. radeontool can be used for r5xx and older cards, and avivotool for r6xx and newer. Those tools essentially give you a GPU dump. I don't know if that's sufficient to debug these issues, but if you collect a GPU dump when it's frozen, and then again when it is not frozen, and include both files, sometimes those give clues. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- Lucid 2.6.32-16 crashed to login screen - miCopyRegion https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539772 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 535653] Re: System freeze during X start-up and while X is running, but only on battery.
Alright I'm going to go ahead and guess that something is busted with your power management stuff, which causes a kernel lockup of some sort. The reason it doesn't lock until X starts may have more to do with some client app kicking in after being triggered by the desktop startup processes. Anyway, so no real evidence so far that it's actually X.org faulting here. If you can't get into the system via ssh or anything then it really must be a kernel bug of some sort. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu) -- System freeze during X start-up and while X is running, but only on battery. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/535653 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553190] Re: Xorg crashes on usb storage unmount/disconnect
Let's be optimistic and assume it got fixed. If it still reproduces in the next few days you can reopen the bug. Btw with crashes we really need to have full backtraces - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance with this. However, I suspect this may not be an X bug. filesystem unmount/disconnect does not generally affect X in any notable way, so it's probably more likely that the fs change caused a kernel fault, and X crashed just as an innocent bystander. This could explain why no backtrace was listed. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: New = Fix Released -- Xorg crashes on usb storage unmount/disconnect https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553190 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 541492 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541492 In the Master bug #541492 I read the following: However, I think it's pretty well known at this point that upstream's code is fairly buggered with i845, so if you have that video card, if you have a freeze it's probably not worth putting in more bug reports about it at this point. You can track the upstream bug report as it progresses, and help them with testing things. Be aware you'll probably be expected to patch and build new kernels in order to do this. Beyond that, assuming a patch doesn't come to light, the one other knob we have to fiddle with at the distro level is to blacklist KMS from this hardware. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting for more info about this and how to configure it off (basically boot i915.modeset=0) so it uses UMS instead. Do I understand correctly that it is being advised to turn *off* KMS and check whether the freeze issues are over then? In the Wiki I read it is possible to turn off KMS and thus reverting to UMS. But also the option of using framebuffering is mentioned. Which option is best to test? By adding radeon.modeset=0 while booting, the DRI started up fine. But I would suggest the developers to display a message PCI Card forced for RS400 family when the checking for RS400 is done. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553784] Re: Radeon X1300 AGP: 3D performance much slower after upgrade to Lucid
Thanks for the suggestion, Bryce. I turned KMS off and 3d performance was restored. Unfortunately this machine generally has multiple user sessions logged in and with KMS off I encounter this bug when I switch to another user: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- ati/+bug/473098 Getting around that bug was one of the reasons I updated to begin with. At this point I am stuck with a choice of having multiple user sessions or working 3D. Since other people need to use the computer, but 3d is not mandatory, I'm going to keep KMS on for now. If anyone can post a link to a relevant upstream issue that would be great. Also if there is any more system information I can provide, let me know. -- Radeon X1300 AGP: 3D performance much slower after upgrade to Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553784 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553784] Re: Radeon X1300 AGP: 3D performance much slower after upgrade to Lucid
One interesting piece of information: I forgot to disable visual effects when I rebooted after re-enabling KMS. When I logged in, performance was not that bad. It is noticeably slower than with UMS but still usable. No 1-2s freezes when moving a window as happened when I enabled visual effects after logging in. I have not seen this before but it seems to suggest an order of operations issue. I'll leave visual effects on for now and see if it ever reverts behavior.
