Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
c'mon you know it is a security bug that relates to Xorg (intel i915GM) , GDM, compiz, emerald and Ubuntu update manager (every crash is tied to update manager or maybe the way it uses network and choice of algorithms to verify your integrity sums of packages). every symptom had been reproduced and can be reproduced again. i am running on some legacy equipment. let's see if it works on UNIX without GDM On Wed, Apr 21, 2010 at 2:16 AM, Bryce Harrington br...@bryceharrington.org wrote: We don't need further confirmations from people seeing the issue. Also, we don't need further reports of how it was worked around; we know there's several ways of working around it. Unfortunately what works for one person doesn't for another. This has been an extremely frustrating bug from a developer perspective, probably almost as frustrating as it is from a user perspective. It seems whenever we make a change to fix something for one set of users, it just causes breakage for some other set. There does not seem to be any particular combination of knob settings that makes things functional for *all* users. So what we've opted to do is turn off KMS for this hardware but pretty much leave all other settings to defaults. So people for whom this configuration works will have 3D and all the usual -intel functionality, just not the boot prettiness. For the set of users that find this is not a good configuration, we've documented the issue in the release notes with a link to the various workarounds people have found, here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes If anyone discovers additional workarounds, or has ideas on improving this documentation, please feel welcome to edit this page. It may help your fellow 8xx users. It is our hope that there will come to be upstream fixes that are viable to backport. If we get enough fixes that we feel confident, we *might* re-enable KMS for 8xx chips on lucid at some point. There are likely to be a lot of patches flying around. If you wish to provide them in a PPA, that's cool. Just be mindful that our goal ultimately is to get a fix into Lucid, and time you can put towards that goal could help a lot. The nature of this bug is such that it's really sensitive to conditions. So you may find a configuration or patch that makes the issue totally go away on your system and someone else's, but breaks things on 3 other people's systems with exactly the same hardware. So getting a patch that fixes it for *everyone* is going to be really tough. -- MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of a duplicate bug. Most bug reports on i855 are probably due to the CPU/GPU incoherency problem that is now consolidated upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27187 (which was split off from a bug report for i845). For now, we mark all automatically reported GPU lockups on i855 as duplicates of this unless there is a reason not to. There are some tests you may do to help upstream with this issue, and I will come back with instructions here. For those of you who know how to patch and compile a kernel you may look at comment #30 (and #6 for what kind of feedback they want) in the upstream bug report. Actually, if someone could volunteer to build an ubuntu-packaged kernel with this patch for others to test, that would be nice. There is a similar master bug report for i845 at bug 541492. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556232] Re: Radeon HD 2600 - Dualscreen problem
a...@aje-laptop:~$ sudo apport-collect 556232 Package xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd not installed and no hook available, ignoring Popup: No additional information collected. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd (Ubuntu) = xserver- xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) ** Description changed: I've been running 10.04 since Alpha 2. I have a HP Compaq 8510p laptop with a Radeon HD 2600 GFX card. I've connected an extra screen (HP 19 - max resolution 1280x1024x60hz). Now, the dualscreen setup has been working flawlessly, until one of the fixes upgraded the kernel. Anything after 2.6.32-10-generic has been causing HSYNC problems on the extra screen. It looks like every other horizontally line is at least 1 pixel off horizontally, and this pattern scrolls downward, making the dual screen impossible to use. When I boot with grub, kernels = 2.6.32-10-generic works perfect. Anything above causes this behaviour. Not only in X but also using the console (which per default seems to run some VESA graphics resolution), which leads me to believe there is something awry with the radeon kernel module or similar. I've checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg, but there is no difference between the boot entries. I hope the source of this can be found fixed as I cannot go above any kernel revision 2.6.32-10-generic until it's fixed. Let me know if you need any configurations, file versions or otherwise. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 553680] Re: system doesn't boot after activating fglrx driver
Hi Guria! I have a similar problem and I'm under the impression that the proprietary fglrx driver has a problem with a particular variant of the nForce4 chipset (the MCP51 variant) on AMD systems. I see you have a Radeon 3000 series card, so you might take the result from a guy on the gentoo forums: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-82 ... rt-25.html He got his card working with a catalyst-driver before catalyst-9.9. so the last working version he encountered was catalyst-9.8. If you have tried to get newer versions of the catalyst working on your setup and failed to get them working you might want to check, if your symptoms match those described in the bug report here: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1794 If you suffer the same symptoms with newer catalyst versions, I would greatly appreciate it if you add your results to that bug report. Good Luck in getting your board working! ** Bug watch added: ATi Linux Platform Bugs #1794 http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1794 -- system doesn't boot after activating fglrx driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553680 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563083] [NEW] Display preferences causes crash with VGA external display
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Opening the display preferences for the first time after the computer is restarted causes the system to crash. By crash, I mean the screen turns black, the cursor freezes (or disappears), and the system is unresponsive to keyboard or mouse stimuli. The purpose of opening the display preferences is to send the display to an external display (monitor or projector) via the VGA port. The external display is off when Ubuntu is started, then powered on, then display preferences is opened, resulting in a crash. Interestingly, if the system is restarted (via Restart..., or after Shut Down...) with the external display connected (VGA) _and_ external display powered on when Ubuntu starts up, display preferences opens without a hitch, detects the external display, and generally plays nice with others. It is only when Ubuntu is already running, then the external display is subsequently powered on, does this crash occur. Additional details (enumerated per Launchpad's suggestion): 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using: Running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. 2) The version of the package you are using: The bug may be in gnome-display-properties, but I cannot be positive. I believe this is part of the gnome-control-center package, and I'm using version 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1. 3) What you expected to happen: I expected the display preferences application to open. 4) What happened instead: Fail. Things I have not tried: -External display connected via non-VGA port, such as a USB. -Opening display preferences for the first time after a restart, without a powered-on external display connected to the VGA port. Thanks in advance to any who could provide information on a fix. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554835] Re: [855GM] GPU hang when an application tries to use XVideo
It seems that the current (and previous) lucid kernel simply cannot work well enough to be usable on my notebook at least. Using http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-rc3-lucid/ works, but that's not the default kernel for lucid, of course. 2.6.32.21-31 makes xorg crashes on XVideo but also at some other cases according to my experience, switching off KMS does not help. The newer kernel in lucid since then (2.6.32.21-32) is even more worse, since the xorg does not even start, and machine freezes completly. So for me at least this bug makes lucid unusable on my hardware which is a show-stopper. Currently I am using 2.6.34 kernel from that PPA to be able to use lucid. -- [855GM] GPU hang when an application tries to use XVideo https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567699] Re: Ensure nvidia package works in future for PAE kernel installs
There are N flavours of kernel headers available, and adding one more won't help. The linux-headers virtual package is satisfied by the headers for each linux flavour. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the linux headers for the running kernel (or the expected-to-be- running-kernel) are available at install time. If this is a bug, the bug is in *all* DKMS-using packages in that they ought detect whether the running kernel matches the available kernel headers, and if not, warn the user and offer to install matching kernel headers. -- Ensure nvidia package works in future for PAE kernel installs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/567699 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I don't see how this would help at all? All kernel-headers-* flavours have a Provides: linux-headers. Unfortunately this is a highly nontrivial problem. There is no way to express we need the same kernel header flavour as the installed kernel in terms of package dependencies. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 355165] Re: My 22 Monitor is not detected upon startup when plugged into my laptop.
Hi Zachariah, Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/) If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446943] Re: Tablet stylus right-click not recognized
I reported the problem that comment 13 is about. The problem I'm seeing is not a duplicate of this bug. If I replace /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-linuxwacom.fdi with the file attached to this bug, the change has no effect. I figured that this is because the change to the config file was made for serial devices only and I have a USB tablet. I moved the line merge key=input.x11_options.Button2 type=string3/merge to the earlier group that isn't restricted to serial devices. This had the effect of mapping the lower button on my Graphire2 stylus to the right mouse button. However, using DBLCLICK 0 instead of 3 had no effect at all. It didn't even degenerate to left single click. The button stayed as the middle mouse button. The problem I'm seeing goes away if I use metacity instead of compiz. -- Tablet stylus right-click not recognized https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xf86-input-wacom in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
