[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572073] [NEW] Screen flicker during content update, especially in Firefox

2010-04-30 Thread Denis Malinovsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I'm using Nouveau video driver for my NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
video-card with Ubuntu 10.04. Screen flickers frequently, especially
when I'm loading pages with many images/banners in Firefox. I tried to
use proprietary NVIDIA driver, but it behaves itself even worse.

I'm eager to help fix this bug so please let me know what I can do for
it. :) Maybe there's some workaround.

I have not been able to reproduce this problem anymore.

Thanks

I suspect that you'll find that setting the option

update-initramfs -u” after editing the file. I've added that to the
wiki. This is needed if Ubuntu is loading the i915 driver from the
initramfs, before trying to mount the root filesystem. It will do this,
for example, if you've set up an encrypted filesystem for which you need
to enter the passphrase before it can be mounted.

Thanks, that worked. Never occurred to me as I don't have an encrypted
filesystem. Strangely, it knocks out plymouth (abs no big deal that)
whereas i915.modeset=1 on boot line does not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 571746] Re: ld ignores entry in ld.so.conf telling where to find libGL.so.1 from nvidia-current

2010-04-30 Thread Stefan Zellmann
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Actually I'm not sure if this is a linker related issue or if it relates
  to the nvidia-current package.

After upgrading to the lucid release candidate, ld wants to link with
the libGL.so.1 from /usr/lib, rather than with the one from /usr/lib
/nvidia-current, although in /etc/ld.so.conf, one can find the entry:
include /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf and nvidia-current is installed
properly. Even when editing ld.so.conf so that their are lines
surrounding the above mentioned line telling the linker to search for
shared objects in /usr/lib/nvidia-current, the behavior wouldn't be as
  expected.

Only when setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib/nvidia-current , ld knows
where to find libGL.so.1(i.e. in /usr/lib/nvidia-current).

Searching the internet for similar topics, I found this post and maybe
it relates to my problem: http://www.mail-archive.com/mesa3d-
  d...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg11607.html

As I know, that this issue is probably tough to reproduce, I attached
the output of the following commands / content of the following files:

  lsb_release -rd
  lsconfig -p
  lspci
  /etc/ld.so.conf
  /etc/ld.so.conf.d/GL.conf - /etc/alternatives/gl_conf

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572104] [NEW] Can't install when Sony FW900 is connected

2010-04-30 Thread DAP
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

(This is my second attempt to enter this, First attempt was discarded due to a
timeout error by Launchpad)
When the Sony GDM-FW900 monitor is connected to this computer, The install
sequence fails immediately after the first menu with a garbage screen.
If I use a different (lower resolution) monitor, The install procedure
succeeds. If I then switch back to the sony monitor, the login screen is
garbage.
The video card is an ATI All in Wonder Radion.
I suspect that Ubuntu is attempting to set a resolution that the video card
can't handle.
This combination of video card and monitor has been working together for years
in Windows 2000, and ubuntu 9.10 when I was able to set a lower resolution.
If someone could tell me how to limit the login screen resolution (what file to
edit, and what to change), I think I can make this combination work.

I followed some advice (re-enable kms, disable dri and change driver to
intel in xorg.conf) from Chris' link in his comment #113, and *so far* I
am not having any lockups, and my screen res is back to 1280x1024.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560250] Re: X with nvidia fails to start on Geforce G102M

2010-04-30 Thread Dr Emixam
I don't know if it helps, but I noticed by watching my logs that :
When the display fail to start, this :

(**) Apr 30 09:25:58 NVIDIA(0): Enabling RENDER acceleration
(II) Apr 30 09:25:58 NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X
extensions is
(II) Apr 30 09:25:58 NVIDIA(0): enabled.
(EE) Apr 30 09:25:58 NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module.
Please see the
(EE) Apr 30 09:25:58 NVIDIA(0): system's kernel log for additional error
messages and
(EE) Apr 30 09:25:58 NVIDIA(0): consult the NVIDIA README for details.

in Xorg.*.log comes before this :

Apr 30 09:26:00 laptop-max kernel: [ 20.541963] NVRM: loading NVIDIA
UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 195.36.15 Fri Mar 12 00:29:13 PST 2010

in /var/log/messages

When the display starts without any problem, the /var/log/messages one
comes first (and of course, there isn't any errors)

We really need this problem to be solved because the free driver doesn't
work at all with this graphic chip (

nouveau/+bug/568798 )

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 536840] Re: Ubuntu Lucid Live-CD doesn't boot

2010-04-30 Thread bernie
On my Sony Laptop 9.10 with the nv-driver worked fine as well. The only
thing that didn't work was the external monitor which is connected by
the DVI-port of the docking station. I installed Lucid now and booted it
with the option 'nomodeset' and then istalled the nvidia-driver. I read
that because of a bug in the nvidia driver the internal display isn't
detected, so the nvidia driver only works with the external monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556761] Re: ntrig stylus: can only left-click

2010-04-30 Thread Rafi
There have been a few claims of intent to provide firmware tools for
linux, from the vendor. So far I haven't seen anything.

The windows tools limit you to firmwares that enable features supported
by the os, so no real MT support unless you use the windows 7 loader.
You can load firmware onto the device from a windows 7 instance inside
VirtualBox (not the ose which doesn't support usb).

Some people (including me) are working on trying to read the firmware version
from linux, but its not a high priority at the moment.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363238] Re: [RV100] very poor Xorg performance on various older graphics HW - XAA no longer works

There are a couple of options which are now ignored under Lucid. For me
this works best:

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver radeon
VideoRam65536
Option AccelMethod EXA

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570735] Re: Kubuntu fails to boot during KDE splash screen

2010-04-30 Thread Dante
I have not been able to get the log files of X, as it was never able to
start.

I have also confirmed that the same problem happens on Ubuntu
(background image loads, start up sounds play, but nothing else happens)

I have tried multiple installation medias and sources.

I am slightly worried, if this IS a fault of the new driver, and it's in
the kernal, then does this not mean my machine will no longer work with
Linux?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 511001] Re: [i855] Lucid Freeze shortly after X startup (needs KMS blacklist?)

2010-04-30 Thread Antonio Macchi III
Yes, I confirm that this problem is still present on the final release
of Lucid.

A clean (atlernate) install of the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS fails completely to
boot on machines with Intel 855 etc graphics family. This is a
catastrophe for me since we have several of those systems in the
surroundings and I cannot fall back to previous Ubuntu versions that
lack support for certain hardware. I wish there was a stronger push for
stability and slightly weaker emphasis on cosmetic improvements to boot
screen and 3D graphics.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572192] [NEW] X server crashes when enabling Xinerama (multiple GFX adapters)

2010-04-30 Thread Marcus Ilgner
Public bug reported:

If I enable Xinerama to create a desktop spanning 3 screens on 2 adapters, X
will start correctly and become either unresponsive or crash after about 30
seconds. Everything runs stable w/o Xinerama, with the window manager only
handling the center display.
Moving the cursor out of the first screen makes it flicker strangely and become
stuck and/or invisible after a short time (1-2 seconds).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572196] [NEW] No display on LCD panel when the fglrx driver is installed. Display on external VGA still works.

2010-04-30 Thread Roger Barrett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Applies to:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
xorg 1:7.5+5ubuntu1
fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu3

1. Loaded 10.04 using Wubi on an Alienware M17 laptop (also called OCZ
Whitebook, based on the Arima W840D Chassis).

2. Testing showed system worked correctly out of the box with RADEON
xorg driver.

3. Switched to ATI FGLRX driver using menu item
System/Administration/Hardware Drivers.

4. Multiple functional errors found with FGLRX.
- xorg provides no output to the Internal LCD, but external VGA and HDMI both
have output.
- xorg outputs to virtual terminal 8, no other virtual terminals display
anything on any screen.
- Catalyst control center recognizes the existence of the LCD, but thinks it is
a 1400x1050 panel (It is actually 1920x1200).

This is probably very specific to fglrx on the Alienware M17. The log
files do not show any real errors, which makes it hard to understand the
issue. Searching the Internet uncovered a small number of forum posts
from lost souls with the Alienware M17 that have been having this
problem for quite a while, but as there are no obvious faults, community
response was close to zero.

I have also verified (by doing clean Wubi installs, and updating to the
latest updates) that the issue also existed in Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 on
the same Alienware M17.

I do not really understand the xorg architecture well enough to know
whether this is a problem with an xorg component, or solely the ATI
fglrx driver. If I understand it correctly, xrandr is supposed to probe
for screens and resolutions and does so properly when using the default
radeon driver. The xorg log files suggests that the fglrx driver uses
its own version of xrandr, which sees the hardware, but complains a bit
about not recognizing hardware or not supporting it.

If there are any suggestion that I could try to resolve this, or
anything I can do to provide further information, not already provided
by ubuntu-bug, please let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572192] Re: X server crashes when enabling Xinerama (multiple GFX adapters)

2010-04-30 Thread Marcus Ilgner
Further testing suggests that the error is only triggered by moving the mouse
out of the first screen. Also it isn't possible to move it back to the first
screen: the cursor flickers and is briefly displayed back on the main display
then it is flickering again on the adjacent one.
Afterwards, pressing a key on the keyboard seems to shutdown X.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541501] Re: [RV515] [LENOVO T60] external screen display shows shivering, horizontal refresh offset

2010-04-30 Thread Valentin Longchamp
I've been annoyed by this same bug and can confirm that the modeset=0
option for the radeon resolved the problem for me. I'm a little
surprised that this fix as well as the one from bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/543045 were not
fixed for the official 10.04 release.

Fortunately with two radeon options it could be fixed, but I guess usual
people who do not often handle module options are going to be lost and
much more annoyed than I have been.

You just need to add the line: options radeon new_pll=0 modeset=0 in a
(for instance) /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf file (or any /etc/modprobe.d/
file).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 569879] [NEW] Non-admin user logout fails on Lucid

2010-04-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

So far I have reproduced this on three machines. If user with admin
privs logs out, no problems. If a user without admin privs logs out the
logout fails to a VT that says (process:310) GLib-WARNING **:
getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0).

Trying to switch to a different VT is not successful.

This does not happen when a non-admin user logs out from Gnome (when
using KDM).

The systems in question all have various Intel video. There was one
report on #kubuntu-devel that the problem was not reproducable on a
system with nVidia.

Touching the power button results in the plymouth splash screen coming
up and a normal shutdown.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 571746] Re: ld ignores entry in ld.so.conf telling where to find libGL.so.1 from nvidia-current

2010-04-30 Thread Stefan Zellmann
Sorry for not attaching my logs initially.

When using Ubuntu Karmic Koala, I never used any driver installed either
from a ppa, nor one installed directly from nvidia binaries either. I
used the one coming from the Ubuntu repositories and never had any
problems with it. Maybe the md5 check sums of /usr/lib/libGL.so* and
/usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so* help verifying this:

b7accaea11f60fd1105d8c34b1e77ec0 /usr/lib/libGL.so
b7accaea11f60fd1105d8c34b1e77ec0 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
b7accaea11f60fd1105d8c34b1e77ec0 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2

40ac933ee69fd016fc1726040f0a404c /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so
40ac933ee69fd016fc1726040f0a404c /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.1
40ac933ee69fd016fc1726040f0a404c /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.195.36.15

Running sudo ldconfig didn't solve my problem either.

When running ldconfig -p | grep -i libGL.so , it says the following:
libGL.so.1 (libc6, OS ABI: Linux 2.4.20) = /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
libGL.so.1 (libc6) = /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.1
libGL.so (libc6, OS ABI: Linux 2.4.20) = /usr/lib/libGL.so
libGL.so (libc6) = /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so

The above mentioned mailing list entry refers to a problem I think is
similar to mine and they trace the problem back to the ABI tag. The
author especially surmises that The ABI tag breaks the sort order with
the library that doesn't have such a tag. Maybe this relates to my
problem in that the libGL.so.1 entry in nvidia-current doesn't have such
a tag and thus the mesa library is preferred.
