[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers
NVIDIA's 256.29 beta driver is available from this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates . The issue is not solved, and I didn't expect it to be. Again, the bugs for both NVS *100m series and FX 880M have been reported to the NVIDIA developers @ nvnews.net, the links to those threads are in the description of this bug (bug 562005). ** Description changed: The brightness controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M or Quadro FX 880M GPUs work while running Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but not while running X and using proprietary NVIDIA drivers. It is possible to force the NVIDIA driver to control the backlight by adding [Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1] to the Devices section of xorg.conf . While this allows the backlight to be controlled, the increments are inconsistent and often result in a buzzing noise from the LED backlight on Lenovo ThinkPad T510s and W510s. Since this did not occur while running nouveau or when switching in text VT, something is wrong. This bad backlight behaviour has been confirmed on ThinkPad models T510 and W510 with NVIDIA NVS 3100m and Quadro FX 880M chipsets, respectively, via http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510 - The issue is discussed on the nvnews.net forums at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145105 and http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 . An NVIDIA developer has said he will investigate the issue. + Because this issue is related to NVIDIA's proprietary video driver, this issue can only be solved by them. An NVIDIA developer has said he will investigate the issues, which are discussed on the nvnews.net forums at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145105 and http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 . [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587797] [NEW] Monitor Settings Keep Changing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I have an external monitor attached to my laptop through a docking station. I use Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. I work only with the external monitor and the laptop monitor should be switched off. This can easily be done with gnome-display-properties. But sometimes (after a reboot or even during normal working), the monitor settings are reset such that the laptop monitor is turned on again. This implicates, that the panel is moving on the laptop screen, which is closed. Without a panel it is hard to run gnome-display-properties to change the display settings again (but I can run it with Alt-F2). In Ubuntu Karmic, I had no problems. How do I disable this new feature? It is hard to say how to reproduce the problem, because it is not regularly happening. Sometimes after a reboot, sometimes when I start a video, sometimes after a screensaver period, but not always after these actions. Please reboot your system and then reproduce the issue. Then type Ctrl+Alt+F1. Login and then type cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.txt. Also run cat /var/log/dmesg dmesg.txt. These will create two log files named Xorg.0.log.txt and dmesg.txt in your home folder. Restart X by running startx. If that doesn't work, just reboot your computer by typing sudo reboot. Zhao, Have you read the install notes for the drivers particularly the following /Note: You must be logged in with superuser privileges (as root or with sudo access) in order to successfully install the ATI Proprietary Linux driver./ I am wondering why the directory /var/lib/dkms/fglrx directory is not present. Is this because you are not running with superuser privileges and the install script could not create this directory along with it's contents? You should be running the command (or something similar): sudo ./ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run Please note the following howto: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI I don't think I cam help you more. Bryan On 31/05/10 01:59, Zhao Zheng wrote: Bryan, Thanks for your explanation. I now see that my /var/lib/dkms/fglrx folder is actually deleted when the installer found error. But I managed to copy it from the source /usr/src/fglrx-8.723. Then I run 'sudo sh make.sh --nohints --uname_r=2.6.32-22-generic --norootcheck' at termnial. I changed the kernel version from 2.6.31-14 to 2.6.32-22 and now I see message 'build succeeded with return value 0'. However, nothing really changed after this 'make'. I have noticed that the file size you listed for libfglrx_ip* are 3MB but the ones I have is only 2MB: -rw-r--r-- 1 root src 2354408 2010-05-30 12:19 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root src 2354408 2010-05-30 12:19 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC4 All the other file sizes are the same. Is it possible that you post these files so that I can give them a try? Post #48 suggests to link /etc/ati to /usr/lib/fglrx/etc/ati. But in my /usr/lib there is no such a folder called fglrx. I also compared my xorg.conf with Post #44. Did not see meaningful differences. In the meantime, I also made a fresh USB installer from a new download of Lucid. I tried to install the driver there and was hoping to get some good copy. But in the end it is the same. I also tried to install the driver using Jockey-gtk as discussed by post #14 and #43. I then ended up the same as using Synaptic, i.e. only a broken fglrxamdccc installed but not the real fglrx driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
Bryan, Thanks for the howto link. I actually had it in my bookmarks some weeks ago but did not get back to read it since my driver was ok at the beginning. I will read it more carefully now and see if I can make some more progress. Sorry for the confusion, but I should have made it clear that I am aware of using 'sudo'. The reason that I still don't have the /var/lib/dkms/fglrx folder, I think, is due to this error message: [Error] Kernel Module : Removing fglrx-8.723 from DKMS This actually was resulted from the confliction of kernel version, which I think I got the work around in my last post. In other words, this folder was created during the installation, but due to the error in the 'make' command, this folder is then wiped away. However, to really get the problem solved, I will learn the info in your link to see if I missed something. Meanwhile, I see that ati has posted a new version of catalyst last week. Maybe that can give some improvements as well. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 573668] Re: FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument on Lucid
It's hardly a fresh lucid install if you're using a 2.6.34 kernel.. nouveau in 2.6.34 and higher does not work with the nouveau userspace in lucid, you need to update libdrm/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau to use it and if you update them they will no longer work with a 2.6.33 and older kernel. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585776] Re: The EDID for BenQ V2400W (DFP-1) contradicts itself: mode
There is a patch upstream in kernel 2.6.35-rc1 which may help you. From the changelog: commit 61e57a8d72f2336faf39b5d940215cf085e01e6e Author: Adam Jackson Date: Mon Mar 29 21:43:18 2010 + drm/edid: Fix secondary block fetch. This makes fetching the second EDID block on HDMI monitors actually work. DDC can't transfer more than 128 bytes at a time. Also, rearrange the code so the pure DDC bits are separate from block parse. Signed-off-by: Adam Jackson Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie Unfortunately this has not been cc'd to the stable kernel branch. Note that kernel 2.6.35-rc1 currently has a major performance regression, which will hopefully be fixed in 2.6.35-rc2. -- The EDID for BenQ V2400W (DFP-1) contradicts itself: mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585776 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)
The same here as in comment #115: kernel 2.6.34-52 (2.6.34-52.1) from Brian Rogers' ppa freezes the system. Dell Optiplex GX60 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01) libdrm 2.4.20~glasen~ppa4 xserver-xorg-video-intel2:2.11.0+git20100529~glasen~ppa2 mesa7.7.1-1ubuntu4~gpufix1 The freeze happens at the first modeswitch, i.e. so early during startup that I cannot dump an i915_error_state. My favourite kernel on this system is a drm-intel-next one from the Ubuntu Kernel Team 2.6.34-997.201004191525, i.e. without the V9 patch. The later drm-intel- next kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm- intel-next also freeze the system at the first mode switch. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587968] [NEW] touchpad cursor frozen (does not move) after suspend
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel When I go to suspend and then resume back the touchpad cursor becomes frozen and the touchpad thus becomes unusable. I tested it when running on battery power and with no mouse attached. (However it may behave in the same way also under other conditions.) Mathieu This is occurring because the driver is detecting a TV connected to the computer. Since the SL400 has no analog tv output, this should not happen. I had the same bug in CentOS, and the workaround was to adjust xorg.conf with a Monitor section. Section Monitor Itentifier TV Option Ignore True EndSection and put Option monitor-TV TV under the Device section of the intel driver. For that to work, you will need to create your own xorg.conf. -- [gm45] Display problem with Ubuntu 9.04 on Thinkpad SL400 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/426259 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587708] Re: [i945gm] X crashes randomly (lucid)
By crash I mean that X (and all graphical applications) close and I am prompted to the run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode (and other options) window. When it happens, I'm still able to use ttys with Ctrl+Alt+F.. If I choose to run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode, it actually starts X in the same resolution as in the 'regular' mode (1280 x 800) but I don't have 3D acceleration any more. It doesn't crash in low-graphics mode (at least it hasn't crashed since I started low graphics mode 4.5 hours ago). The OS was installed from an Ubuntu 9.10 CD to which I added KDE (apt-get install kubuntu-desktop) and then upgraded to Lucid on April 29 (apt-get dist-upgrade). The latest apt-get upgrade before I had this bug was on 2010-05-26 (apt_history.log.txt attached). I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.32.21.22 to 2.6.32.22.23 yesterday (May 30) but it was*after* the bug appeared and did not change anything. I also tried to boot on a 2.6.34 kernel (which I compiled myself from kernel.org sources) but I still have the same bug so it does not seem to be directly related to the kernel. When I sent the bug report (and also now) I was running the distribution kernel (Linux 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu), not the custom one. ** Attachment added: /var/log/apt/history.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49456007/apt_history.log.txt -- [i945gm] X crashes randomly (lucid) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/587708 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I do have the same problem on my HP Compaq 615 (graphics card: AMD HD 3200). It only happens when the fglrx drivers are installed, which results in KMS being disabled. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567971] Re: Lucid Lynx: Black screen on start up, no login screen.
Hello! Yesterday (2010-May-30) I came across with a similar problem, I upgraded from 9.10 -10.04 via update manager and rebooted and I see the Ubuntu logo with the red dots loading (looks awful and I assume that is loading) for a few seconds, then the screen goes black (no login screen) I just get the login prompt. So I decided to do a fresh install, on another computer I burned the ISOs, but when I tried the livecd the desktop never loads, it just goes into a black screen, then the command line appears I have tried the live CD i386 amd64 and same result. Have tried it on several desktop and laptops, so I figure the ISOs are corrupted, so tried burning new ones on a different machine and I get the same result. Some quick details of the machines I have tried the 10.04 ISOs: Toshiba laptop - nVidia video card P4HT 2GB Ram Toshiba laptop - Ati video card C2D 4GB Ram Asus desktop - Asus video card C2D 4GB Ram Dell laptop - intel video card C2Q 8GB Ram HP desktop - intel video card C2Q 4GB Ram So I downloaded and burned the ISOS for 9.10 on the machine that I burned the 10.04 ISOS, and the freshly 9.10 burned ISOs work just fine (so I can assume that my DVDRW unit is working properly) all machines are up and running fine with 9.10. Also tried on some friends laps/desktops and nope, I get the Ubuntu screen with the red dots for a moment, then it just goes back to a black screen with the promp. No error messages appear either with the installed or running the livecd, and no desktop or login screen ever appears. Anyone have an idea of what the problem might be? -- Lucid Lynx: Black screen on start up, no login screen. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/567971 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433142] Re: geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic
Hello, If I run ps -aux | grep Xorg I get the error message bad ps syntax, perhaps a bogus '-'? See http://procps.sf.net/faq.html; which says According to the POSIX and UNIX standards, the above command asks to display all processes with a TTY (generally the commands users are running) plus all processes owned by a user named x. If that user doesn't exist, then ps will assume you really meant ps aux. The warning is given to gently break you of a habit that will cause you trouble if a user named x were created. which doesn't mean much to me :o) Anyway, after the error message it outputs a line that looks like this: jenny 0.0 0.03252 YYY pts/0 S+ 0.00 grep Xorg With a number that is different every time the command is run (and YYY changes sometimes). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 538648] Re: [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes on 8086:2a42 (Needs i915.powersave quirk)
Hi, I tried installing Andy's kernels but the results are not very good. While I get about 2-3 flickers/day normally, the rate gets higher when I try to run a heavy application. If at the same time, I do the powersave thing, the flickers seem to go away. Can anybody tell me if I am going to run into some loss in terms of hardware (like battery and CPU life time) if I do the powersave thing ? I don't mind using this workaround for the time being, if it doesnt cost me anything !! I love my computer more than I hate the flickers though!! Let me know if you need to have any information about my system. -- [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes on 8086:2a42 (Needs i915.powersave quirk) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538648 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433142] Re: geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic
OK, well here's what I did (don't know if it's good form or not...) 1. logged in as usual 2. press Ctrl+alt+F1 3. logged in 4. $ sudo pkill gdm 5. $ /usr/bin/Xorg -configure [gave some error message] 6. $ sudo /usr/bin/Xorg -configure [saved xorg.conf.new into my home directory] I then looked at the conf file, it already had geode as the driver. (see attached) I copied it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf but I had the same issue (defaults to 1024x768 and no option for 1024x600) ** Attachment added: twinhead xorg.conf.new generated through -configure command http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49478698/xorg.conf.new -- geode driver do not display 1024x600 on (K)UNR Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433142 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-geode in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
