[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-05 Thread Tim Hallett
Let me see if I understand
We have a fixed kernel for i845 that has never successfully booted a
machine...
The Intel corporate team officially leading the fix have contributed no code
since this bug was released in January...
All the workarounds proposed involve removing fairly major areas of
functionality, and don't seem to work anyway

I have an i845 machine and would be happy to perform tests, but is there
anything right now worth testing?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-05 Thread Aether
I think I have the same problem - for me X crashes and even restarting
kdm doesn't fix it. Running linux image 2.6.32-22 on a Dell Inspiron
mini 10v with an i915. Interestingly enough an Arch linux user reports
a fix by starting X later in the boot process
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=94206

It sounds a lot like my issue but not sure how to try similar in ubuntu.
I see the same things the Arch linux user does - it drops back to text
on vty2 rather than vty7. I've tried the patch and I've tried turning
off KMS, none of which help the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 492782] Re: Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume)

2010-06-05 Thread seakayone
I am also bugged with this issue when I suspend to ram and then resume.
As in the above reports ctrl+f1, ctrl+f7 fixes the problem as does
typing in a text document as well as changing the workspace with
ctrl+alt+cursor.

Running latest lucid Linux with FOSS ati drivers and newest kernel:
2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 22:02:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I am using a Thinkpad T43p with ATI Mobility FireGL V3200 graphic card.

The above mentioned workaround does the job for me, thanks.

Please let me know if there is more useful information that I may be
able provide.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577997] Re: Xorg freeze after switch user applet is invoked

2010-06-05 Thread Adrian Popa
I'm not sure if it's exactly the same bug, but when my X crashes (I have two
displays), I can see the mouse pointer jumping violently between the edges of
the two screens. I am not using user-switcher - I am just using desktop
applications (some terminals, firefox, thunderbird and a touch of java).
I can't be 100% sure, but the problem appeared after installing (and rebooting
to) the new kernel 2.6.32-22-generic.
I have the binary Nvidia drivers, but they haven't been a problem so far.

I will try to see if the bug reproduces with the previous kernel (I have
only upgraded to 10.04 for 4 days, so my previous experience might not
be concusive).

The end of my Xorg.log file is:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-06-05 Thread useResa
Interesting link and read as provided by Aether (comment #131).
Unfortunately Ubuntu does no longer use inittab and I know to little on how to
control the startup order.

I know it is controlled by the S and the number following it in the
/etc/rcX.d (where X represents the runlevel) that is preceeding the file
names. However, it seems to me that the X environment is started from
/etc/rcS.d directory and I can not really see when that kicks in. If
this is at the end of the boot process my understanding is that X is
already started as last.

Can someone please confirm and test this (or explain how I can test it)
since until now none of the suggested workarounds have provided a stable
environment for me.

Good news! I've managed to retest on Lucid.

or confusion.

So I can confirm that the problems do not occur in Lucid.

Thank you very much for your help!

unpredictable moment graphics goes weird. Resolution and refresh rate
did not change. No such problems when using windows xp (so it should not
be the hardware itself). After rebooting graphics is again ok for some
time.

Here is the video of what's going on:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t356nDTGdE

When I installed fglrx package blinking was gone, but I don't like this
solution.

Asked this question on KubuntuForums, but got no answer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 333005] Re: Single leads mostly to double click

2010-06-05 Thread Bryce Harrington

@cuchulainmaclugh - thanks for providing that info, but we would like to see it
from the original reporter. We may want to send this bug report upstream, but
upstream has a hard and fast rule that logs from someone other than the
original reporter are not acceptable. The reason for that is that quite often
with X.org bug reports, two people may *think* they have the same issue based
on commonality of symptoms and/or hardware, but in truth they have separate
issues and mixing the report and the files can cause the developers some
confusion.

If this bug report seems not to be getting attention, I would encourage
you to file a new bug report with this data, and simply reference this
bug report in your bug description.

2010-06-05 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

** Visibility changed to: Public

** This bug is no longer flagged as a security vulnerability

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577997] Re: Xorg freeze after switch user applet is invoked

2010-06-05 Thread Adrian Popa
I've managed to reproduce the same bug on a different PC, running nvidia 96
driver and also having a dual display. The only difference is that I didn't get
a stack trace in Xorg.0.log when I killed X. The trigger in all cases has been
moving the mouse cursor between the screens (going from one screen to the
other).
AndyB - can you try to reproduce the issue by either moving the mouse pointer
quickly between your screens, or by dragging a window between the two screens?
If what I'm seeing is the same bug as what you have, you should have a crash
independent of the login switcher...
By the way, it seems it's not connected to the kernel update - I tested on
systems before and after the update and I reproduced the bug.

Regards.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578224] Re: [radeon driver] (regression) poor video decoding performance

2010-06-05 Thread Хаджиев
Nope. No effect (or at least not so apparent) can be seen with 2.6.34
and X Server ver. 1.8.1 rc1.

P.S. Sorry for this question but why the importance of the bug is not
set?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590109] [NEW] Freeze when switching user (Intel Graphics, Lenovo W500)

2010-06-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After some user switches using either the switch user appet or switch
from... or on the login screen, my computer hangs.

Note that this does not happen every time I switch users, only after
about every 3rd switch. The only resolution I found for the freeze is a
cold restart.

My hardware is a Lenovo W500 laptop, with 2 graphic adapters. I disabled the
ATI adapter in the BIOS, ubuntu thus only sees the Intel adapter. lspci reports
it as:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Here is the adapter info from Xorg.log:
(--) PCI:*(0:0:2:0) 8086:2a42:17aa:2114 Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller rev 7, Mem @ 0xf440/4194304,

Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller rev 7, Mem @ 0xf420/1048576

I found the follwing report in my Xorg.log, making me strongly believe
the graphics adapter is the problem here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570228] Re: Software Rasterizer used on PowerPC system with Radeon card after Lucid upgrade

2010-06-05 Thread Drew Engelbrecht
I've played with this a bit (after some updates to lucid) and I found
that I don't need an xorg.conf anymore. It seems like all that is needed
to get around this issue is to disable KMS for the graphics card.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 430919] Re: xserver cannot read V_BIOS of second graphics card

2010-06-05 Thread Ali Asad
Hi Ubuntu Folks,
Tested on Lucid Lynx 10.04. I think this problem is worse on laptop for
processors that has built-in Intel HD graphics (i3 and newer i5 and i7). For
example, mine is an Intel core i5 cpu (i5 520M 2.40GHz) and BIOS is defaulted
to the HD graphics and there are no BIOS options to change the default. Now, my
512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550 Graphics card could not be used at all.
After the installation of proprietary as well as open source driver for ATI -
ended up getting a blank screen if explicitly xorg.conf is used for loading
driver radeon or fglrx. Following are the details with regards to the attached
/var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

PC Model: DV4 HP-Pavilion 2112Tx
CPU: Intel Core i5 520M, 2.40GHz
OS: Ubuntu Lucid Lynx - 10.04

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 282939] Re: gnusound crashes X session immediately on launch (Affects Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic)

2010-06-05 Thread Aisano
It is somewhat discomforting that an error in gnusound terminates the
Gnome session. I looked into this and found that gnusound defines an
elaborate signal handler, probably with the intention to save as much of
the user's ongoing work as possible. The code is contained in the
emergency.c module.

Now the last statement in the emergency_sighandler function is a
kill(0, original_signo). This propagates the caught signal to all
processes in the same process group. A ps -ej command shows that all
processes started through a Gnome menu or a Gnome launcher share the
same process group, whose number is the process id of the gnome-
session process. So when gnusound crashes from a SIGABRT (as in the
present case) this signal is propagated to the Gnome session, which
accordingly terminates.

Presently I neither understand why all processes launched by Gnome share
a process group nor why gnusound propagates signals to the whole process
group. The combination of these two facts is certainly fatal and
undesirable. Somebody who understands this better than I presently do
might make a separate bug out of this.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 462791] Re: Support Missing from Fujistu Stylistic ST50XX Wacom on Ubuntu 9.10

2010-06-05 Thread Snowman
Sorry Bryce not had much time to reply of late due to some family
commitments, I can confirm this appears to be fully resolved in 10.04lts
(I'm replying from it now) - OnBoard works very well at login and locked
screen so very pleased, overall a huge step forward. Only pain now is I
had to add i925.modeset=1 to grub for the 845intel graphics which caught
me off guard at first - and sometimes when waking from suspend the
stylus acts like I'm holding down a function button which can be a real
pain as that's unrecoverable as far as I can tell without fully
restarting X.

Aside from minor issues it's a huge step forward and is now fully usable
as an undocked pentablet, if I can be of any further help please let me
know

original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to
reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against

Bug description:
Binary package hint: xorg

I was really eager to try the New Ubuntu and I know it's a RC but I an
totally unable to get any sign's of life from my Fujistu Stylistic Wacom
Pentablet. 9.04 supported everything out the box with only a minor
annoyance of the pen going out of alignment if the display was rotated
then the system put to sleep.

9.10 however doesn't see anything relating to my wacom devices (and I
have tried two tablets just to be sure) and from what I was reading from
the RC notes regarding Wacom I was expecting it to be as seamless as
9.04 but with extra's.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560570] Re: fglrx fails to identify attached monitor, displays blank screen

2010-06-05 Thread Chris George
Hi,

I have what looks to be exactly the same problem with 10.04 and an
Saphire 5450 (512 DD3 model) as Manuel. The card is working fine under
Windoze. Maybe just a coincidence but I also have an HP Pavilion with a
Hermatite motherboard. May not be so surprising as I think many opt to
put these cards into the HP slimlines.

As with the first poster, hangs on the splash screen. I have tried
different monitors but to no avail. I couldn't get this HW config to
work in Karmic either.

Cheers, Chris.

tweaked xorg.conf and information from /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting
up? This might pinpoint where the problem is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-05 Thread Tech2010
For my system, last night's kernel reintroduced the bug. The kernel
before did not have it.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-22-generic freezes.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-21-generic does not.

Your mileage may vary.

With -21 I was able to go five days without a freeze.
With -22, I have five (5) freezes while using the system on one night.

2010-06-05 Thread AndyB
I don't have two screens so can't reproduce a crash that way. Apart from
the user-switcher app causing the crash, the only other time I've seen
it is after a normal (first user) logout - when X re-initializes it
just hangs using 100% CPU before the gdm login window appears.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 564376] Re: Lucid - radeon kms causes iwl3945 to drop connection on youtube but not with mainline

2010-06-05 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Since Intel users are also affected by this, the problem might be caused
by some common parts of kernel KMS DRM code shared between intel and
radeon. It has been suggested the IRQ handling in DRM (latency) might be
cause of problem, in upstream fdo bug28106. Would be great to get this
*extremely* annoying bug fixed...

@dfme:
1. Does problem go away if you boot kernel with i915.modeset=0 option (KMS
disabled) ?
2. Ubuntu 9.10 does not use KMS, which is believed to be triggering these
problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-06-05 Thread databubble
I had 3 freezes yesterday. In each case the last entry in kern.log was:

do_IRQ: 0.189 No irq handler for vector (irq -1)
(Sometimes the number is 0.175, 0.177).

(Interestingly, there have been no instances of the BUG: CPU soft
lockup messages in the last two days.

I ran a memory test overnight and it was clean.

I also tested kernel 2.6.31-02063112-generic, 2.6.34-020634-generic,
2.6.35-020635rc1-generic today. All of these froze.

In exasperation, I booted this morning with noapic nolapic acpi=off on
the grub kernel parameters with current 2.6.32-22-generic. This
disables all power management (as I understand it), such that my system
is running full-out all the time.

The system has been running solid ever since. Even with torture testing
it with a DVD rip in Handbrake, Virtualbox, MythTV recording and
commercial flagging, an h264 transcode, and Amarok playing all
running simultaneously. The DVD rip alone would have been enough to
lock the system up within a few minutes without noapic nolapic
acpi=off.

This is not desirable work-around, or a long-term solution, but it at
least lets me work for the moment, and allows me to continue helping
debug rather than reverting back to karmic.

To re-iterated: this system has been working fine for over a year with
karmic and jaunty, with power management. This is a regression with
Lucid, and the issue is present with upstream kernels as well.

It would be very nice if someone could assign a more appropriate High
Priority to this issue and we could get some attention from some devs
before this bug report becomes a confused with too many un-related
freezes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590136] Re: Nvidia binary drivers not functioning after update

2010-06-05 Thread Robert Osowiecki
I found workaround for my problem. I suppose it's not related to xorg or
nvidia drivers.

The main cause seems to be that I still had legacy grub from Ubuntu
version 9 not updated to grub2. Because of that, the running kernel
version (2.6.31-20) was not the latest istalled (2.6.32-22); grub-update
had no effect on grub menu and nvidia drivers package did not care about
old kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590242] [NEW] Keyboard doesn't work under X11 on Thinkpad X100e when on battery power

Public bug reported:

The keyboard and mouse do not respond on Thinkpad X100e when on battery
power, same issue when booting off battery or unplugging AC inside X11.
If I shutdown gdm and plug AC power at console keyboard works fine. I
suspect this is something in the Xorg input modules.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590242] Re: Keyboard doesn't work under X11 on Thinkpad X100e when on battery power

2010-06-05 Thread Dustin Lundquist
** Description changed:

The keyboard and mouse do not respond on Thinkpad X100e when on battery
power, same issue when booting off battery or unplugging AC inside X11.
- If I shutdown gdm and plug AC power at console keyboard works fine. I
- suspect this is something in the Xorg input modules.
+ If I shutdown gdm and plug AC power at a console, the keyboard works
+ fine.

- This worked under previously under 9.10, but fails under 10.04.
-
+ This worked under previously under 9.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 441653] Re: xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call

2010-06-05 Thread StephenR0
I have the same problem when I try to use the second ATI 4670 card in a
system with two of these cards. With the first one alone it works just
fine. This is 10.4 64 bit with fglrx. The message in Xorg.1.log is:

Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call

Please let me know if you need more information.
