[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch
I am also effected by this. My employer has just bought me an Acer Aspire 5935G specifically so I can do development work on an OpenGL based application. However I can not access the Nvidia graphics card. The machine has two graphics cards: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce GT 130M] (rev a1) which in Windows one can switch between. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and it just uses the Intel card, but it does work, just rather slowly. When I install the proprietary nvidia driver opengl stops working: glxinfo name of display: :0.0 Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0. Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.0. (NB Installing it by hand was tricky till I realised I had to stop the nouveau module from grabbing the device before trying to do the install. (lspci -v, and look what module is using the device) ) In addition, the tty terminals (ctrl-alt-f1 etc.) stop working so it is only possible to log in via X11. When I try to switch to them the screen still displays the x11 screen. This makes it hard to fix the problem. There is no access in the bios to control the graphics. I tried the solution suggested in another bug report of setting the bus id: BusID PCI:1:0:0 but that had no effect, I still get the intel card chosen as primary device (from Xorg log:) Primary Device is: PCI 0...@00:02:0 For me this is more than just a wish list item, as it prevents me using the machine for it's primary purpose. I really hope there is some solution soon, I am not too bothered about being able to hot switch , I just want some way to choose the right graphics card. I am considering removing the module that drives the intel card, so it has to use the nvidia card, but that seems a bit drastic. -- support graphics card hot switch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 45303] Re: ThinkPad X30 needs SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
Can anyone remember how exactly this was fixed? Because I have the same kind of problem on 8.04 and have for the last two years. After every resume from sleep, the text console would be more and more corrupted, and eventually (perhaps after 5 resumes) I would have dirty black artifacts on the mouse cursor and scrolling problems under X, and the system would be unstable. If I hibernate at this stage instead of suspending, it normally restores the machine to functioning state, but wasted 5 minutes. I found by trial and error that setting SAVE_VBE_STATE=false appears to have fixed the problem for me, and also made resuming much faster as an added bonus. I gather from bug #60882 that this causes problems on Fujitsu Lifebooks, so this probably isn't a global fix, but it seems at least to apply to Thinkpad X31 and X40. ch...@rocio(~)$ grep . /var/lib/acpi-support/*-* /var/lib/acpi-support/bios-version:1QET78WW (2.15 ) /var/lib/acpi-support/system-manufacturer:IBM /var/lib/acpi-support/system-product-name:2672PEG /var/lib/acpi-support/system-version:ThinkPad X31 ch...@rocio(~)$ lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY -- ThinkPad X30 needs SAVE_VBE_STATE=false https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/45303 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590393] [NEW] Full screen or other scaled video playback doesn't work properly on ATI Radeon X1200 (RS690)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati After I've upgraded my Karmic to Lucid, radeonhd stopped working, so I started to use the default radeon driver. Previously I've already tried it, but it never worked perfectly. Now with default config it started mplayer with xv without problem in native resolution, but when I changed to fullscreen (or tried totem with rescaled resolution) image started to be striped, CPU usage growed to 100%, and playback lagged. Then I started to play with kernel parameters, now with nofb quiet nosplash it works almost good, but it still eats whole capacity of a core, and playback is lagging a little bit even with a small sized video. Strange thing, that with 720p the results are the same, and mplayer doesn't notify me that my computer is too slow to playback this without framedrop (it does with 1080p videos) Previously with radeonhd this wasn't a problem even with several running process in the background. I'm using an 1920x1080 monitor with an Asus M2A-VM mb with integrated X1200 (RS690). All packages are updated to the latest under Lucid. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Full screen or other scaled video playback doesn't work properly on ATI Radeon X1200 (RS690) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/590393 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 578224] Re: [radeon driver] (regression) poor video decoding performance
In the Phoronix forums I found this post by AMD Linux's John Bridgman: Note that the KMS performance hits are highly system-specific - eg on balance my system feels as fast or faster with KMS than with UMS. I think the limiting factor is CPU power (ie the KMS code uses more CPU cycles than the UMS code), so it's extra important to make sure that your power management settings aren't slowing down the CPU when you need it. Also, from your XorgLog: (--) RADEON(0): Chipset: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (ChipID = 0x71c5) (II) RADEON(0): PCIE card detected (II) RADEON(0): KMS Color Tiling: disabled In the same thread on the Phornix forums I found this: KMS is slower because color tiling in DDX is disabled by default. You need to enable it in xorg.conf, see man radeon. The man page is for UMS so it lies sometimes. Guys, i just found a solution on how to end the random freezing problem in Ubuntu 10.04. I have tried disabling the Visual Effects a.k.a. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503161] Re: mouse pointer disappears after coming back from suspend
I also have this problem. The mouse pointer or cursor is visible on the login screen, but once the password is typed and Enter is struck, it disappears and stays gone. A user above mentioned that opening a terminal and typing brings it back, and this is true. I've tried reinstalling xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video- radeon, neither of which worked. Also I tried installing xorg-driver- fglrx and rebooting, but nothing on that front, either. Not sure whether this helps anyone, but when the login screen appears (i.e. when the X server starts), the screen is horribly blurry and distorted, as though the monitor's refresh rate is badly set. To avoid this, I leave the monitor off while the machine boots. Once I'm certain it's been long enough that the login screen must have appeared by now, I turn on the monitor, and it's clear. The monitor model is a Gateway 2000. -- mouse pointer disappears after coming back from suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503161 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
Just so we don't get too many unrelated freezes being tracked in this thread... the symptoms characterized by florianr were: - issue was NOT present prior to 10.04 - intermittent system-wide freezes - frozen image on screen, showing the desktop image without any change and not taking mouse/keyboard actions - sometimes MagicSysRQ (R-E-I-S-U-B) works, sometimes not. - system log is still active for some time after the freeze appears to happen - system logs do not contain any obvious/consistent message that identify the cause of the freeze - issue is STILL present testing with upstream kernels (except that you may be able to continue moving the mouse or a period of time) - not a memory issue - system stays connected via wireless (if using wireless) - issue appears on very different hardware (intel CPU and. AMD,; intel video and nVidia), - not related to a specific desktop (gnome and kde) or a specific application (e.g. virtualbox, firefox, etc.) From my own observations: - a freeze can be provoked by running processes with high CPU (and possibly disk I/O) such as with handbrake - I've been able to prompt freezes with no desktop or X server running although I don't know if florianr can confirm this on his system. As such, I doubt the problem can be compiz or xorg related (although, note that it may be processor load related, as as such something like compositing could make a system more likely to freeze) - I can eliminate freezes by booting with kernel parameters noapic nolapic acpi=off florianr, so we can see whether we're still dealing with the same bug or not, could you please verify: - your system still responds to pings when frozen (and you can't ssh in) - your system doesn't freeze if you boot with kernel parameters noapic nolapic acpi=off Others, if your symptoms are different from those above, you may want to start a new bug report. -- Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 539772] Re: [MASTER] Lucid 2.6.32-16 crashed to login screen - miCopyRegion
This patch fixed two similar issues to me : - from v10.04 on x86_64, connected into an xterm in ssh onto a v10.04 on i686 : changing to *some* directories, or moving *some* files on the i686 computer lead to an X crash on the x86_64 box; - running konqueror on the x86_64 box, I wanted to rename a file from a remote directory mounted through NFS : hitting Enter in order to have the file renamed triggered the crash. It seems that this patch fixed everything ! Well done ! BTW : as a not-so-young Unix sysadmin, I am a bit disappointed that such a basic bug can happen in the Unix world. But fortunately what seems to be a sufficient fix was delivered quickly. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
I have Lucid installed on three PCs. Here are the devices and status: 1. ThinkPad T41p ATI FireGL (128 MB); Compiz enabled Version: Lucid 32 bit upgraded from Karmic via Update Manager Status: stable 2. ThinkPad T42 ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (32 MB); Compiz enabled Version: Lucid 32 bit; fresh install Status: random freezing; always freezing at blank screensaver; freezing usually on Firefox or Chromium; freezes tend to be clustered (suspect possible issue with certain web sites which may be reloaded after hard reboot); this laptop was stable with Karmic and openSUSE 11.2 - no hardware issues are suspected 3. Custom Desktop (Intel Pentium D 805) ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 (256 MB); Compiz enabled Version: Lucid 64 bit; fresh install Status: stable I have scoured various blogs and forums and tried every suggestion I could find to stabilize the T42, including: a. Custom xorg.conf b. radeon.modeset=0 in GRUB (also tried nomodeset) c. Set screensaver to other than blank screen (the laptop would still freeze at some point after the screensaver kicked in) Initially, I thought that some changes had made a difference. However, the randomness of this issue can make a one hour freeze-free session seem like an improvement. Soon enough, though, I would find the system locking every two minutes, five minutes, ten minutes, etc. However, I think I have finally found a solution without downgrading to Karmic: I had seen where some users with Intel graphics cards had experienced success downgrading the kernel to linux-image-rt (2.6.31.10.12). While I certainly don't have a need for a real time kernel, this was the only kernel in the default Ubuntu Lucid repositories that was based on 2.6.31 and not 2.6.32. I didn't want to go with a nightly build or PPA. I wanted to stick with the stock repo, if possible. Sure enough, I've been operating nearly two full days without a lockup. The screensaver kicks in appropriately and comes out of screensaver mode (which the laptop previously had not done). In aggregate, I've had hours of use without any issue whatsoever. Previously, I would have expected anywhere from 4-12 freezes. This laptop still has all the various changes that I've made, so I can't yet tell whether it is the kernel alone or if it is the downgraded (plus real time) kernel in conjunction with one of the other changes I have made. I will shortly rebuild this laptop with a custom remaster (using Remastersys) with the linux-image-rt kernel as the sole change. I expect this will work without any special change to xorg.conf or GRUB, but will report back if this fails and the freezes return -- Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587708] Re: [i945gm] lucid: moving pointer over auto-hidden KDE panel with a non-KDE app icon in the systray triggers an X crash.
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel When the KDE panel auto-hide feature is enabled and aMSN Messenger is started, if I move the pointer to the bottom of the screen several times (where the hidden panel is supposed to be), X will crash. Usually, X will not crash the first time I move the pointer to the bottom of the screen (instead, it will show the panel as it's supposed to do) and it does not take an exact number of pointer moves : it seems to take from 2 to 10 pointer moves to show the panel before X will crash. I didn't count the exact number before each crash but I realized it changes from one time to another. - If I enable KDE panel auto-hide but I don't start aMSN, X won't crash - (no matter how many times I move the pointer to the bottom of the screen - to show the panel). If I disable auto-hide (set the panel to Always - visible) and I start aMSN, X won't crash. + I realized that I have the same bug if I use another non-KDE application + that adds an icon to the system tray (I had the same bug after starting + Skype). + + If I enable KDE panel auto-hide but I don't start an application that + adds an icon to the systray, X won't crash (no matter how many times I + move the pointer to the bottom of the screen to show the panel). I have never experienced this bug when I use GNOME (I have both GNOME and KDE installed on my Ubuntu 10.04) After a crash, I see the dialog when I have an option to run Ubuntu in low graphics mode. I'm still able to use ttys (Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7]). If I don't choose run Ubuntu in low graphics mode and I try to log in as root in text mode and then run startx, X won't start. If I choose to run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode, I can open a KDE or a GNOME session again and I still have a 1280x800 resolution (the same as in the 'normal' mode. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590571] [NEW] The monitor turns off after kernel selection in Maveric
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau This bug is on Maverick but i am unable to use Maverick i filed it using Lucid. After kernel selection the monitor shuts off with the message Monitor will shut down in 5sec or something close to that if not exactly. it is the same message if the monitor was left on when shutting down PC. Not sure if it is the kernel, Plymouth or the nouveau drivers. This is using the daily ISO from 06/4/2010. I have tried upgrading as well and i am unable to use Maverick for same reason. The last time i upgraded was 06/06/2010. Steps to reproduce: 1. Download and burn daily alternative image from 06/04/2010 2. Install 3. Reboot to finish installation 4. Choose Maverick kernel from Grub2 5. Find the monitor message What i expect to happen: After reboot I should be able to boot into at the very least end up into TTY or low graphics mode I have to Nvidia cards and i tried both. I have Nvidia 6200 that i use all the time, and a 5200 that i use when 6200 fails like in this bug. I use Apport so you get at least some system Info. If you need further Info please ask and i will attempt to get it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 519049] Re: xauth generate with large timeout triggers assertion
** Description changed: - Running xauth generate with a large timeout value (e.g., xauth - generate :0.0 . trusted timeout ) causes the X server to crash - with an assertion failure. Immediately upon running the command, the X - server crashes, and after a few seconds, the login screen appears. + [Impact] + xauth is not commonly run by users, but applications should not be able to crash the X server. In the case of a guest session, although this does not allow the guest to terminate other users' sessions it leaves the system at a blank VT from which it is not obvious how to recover. + + [Development] + The patch has also been applied to ubuntu-x git, and will be uploaded with 2:1.8.1.901-1ubuntu1. + + [Patch] + The patch is taken from upstream's patchwork tracker: http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/242/ . This patch replaces the existing 122_xext_fix_card32_overflow_in_xauth.patch added in 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu6, which was an earlier patch from the same mailing list thread. + + [Test Case 1] + 1. Update Lucid to the latest version. Reboot and log into Gnome + 2. Open a gnome-terminal + 3. Run “xauth generate $DISPLAY . timeout ” + 4. Xserver instantly crashes (and is restarted by display manager). It should not crash at this point. + + [Test Case 2] + 1. Update Lucid to the latest version. Reboot and log into Gnome + 2. From the session menu select “Guest session” + 2. In the new guest session, open a gnome-terminal + 3. Run “xauth -i generate $DISPLAY . timeout ” + 4. Xserver instantly crashes, resulting in a black screen. After setting console to raw mode (Alt+SysRq+R) Ctrl+Alt+F7 (or possibly F8, F9, etc) will switch back to the original user's session. + + [Regression Potential] + Low. The patch is small, just dropping the assert that causes the crash and ensuring the timeout values fit in the positive range of a CARD32 value. + + There is a known problem with the patch when the epoch time is sufficiently far in the future that we can ignore it for now. + + When epoch time is GetTimeInMillis() - + (CARD32)(MAXINT), ie Sun Jan 10 2038 11:09:28 GMT+0530 (IST), security + authorization will expire with timeout reset to Zero. + + + [Original Report] + Running xauth generate with a large timeout value (e.g., xauth generate :0.0 . trusted timeout ) causes the X server to crash with an assertion failure. Immediately upon running the command, the X server crashes, and after a few seconds, the login screen appears. I have attached a full backtrace. Xorg.0.log and dmesg don't contain any relevant data.
