[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532436] Re: nvidia driver sometime does not load at boot
I am still having this problem with the latest nvidia drivers. At nearly every boot nvidia fails to load and gdm tries to run a failsafe xsession. Unfortunately, there's nothing of importance in either the xorg or kernel logs. The kernel log has no mention of any failure at all and xorg's log just says nvidia failed to load and I should contact support and read my kernel log If I exit to terminal, i can start gdm with either sudo gdm or sudo service gdm start and everything runs normally. Could this be a mistake in user/group permissions? @quequotion - I would say this is more likely a race condition between the loading of the nvidia kernel module and the starting of X / gdm - basically I think what is happening is that the module is loaded but X / gdm starts up before it has finished initialising the hardware and hence the X nvidia driver fails to load correctly. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 294972] Re: MASTER: xorg high cpu usage, general system sluggishness
Hello, as everybody here I suffer from high cpu usage due to xorg. I must say, that I tried to follow the troubleshooting guide in ubuntu wiki, but I cannot really understand how it can help me. I print the things, they suggest to print, and what...? Here is the diagnostic of my problem. I have fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10 on Dell E6400 laptop. I have Nvidia graphic card with the newest driver 185.18.36. As many of the posts here, I start to have high cpu usage after 2-3 hours working. Then even a change of the desktop is taking 5+ sec and the fan is going crazy, everything is way to slow for a 2 core processor, 4GB or RAM and 40% usage of the HDD. I kill all the x-application which seems to take a lot of the cpu (firefox, terminal, skype) however nothing changes. Neither the system goes back to its normal speed after restart (I need to wait several hours to get it back to normal). I made all the diagnostics to check if it is not a hardware problem - apparently it is not. I added in xorg.con the options suggested by Bjiorn - no effect. I do not have compiz. I do not know to what my problems are connected. I have them since 5 months. Unfortunately I may move away from ubuntu... Any comments/suggestions are welcome. I want to say that i surfed a lot to find a solution for my problem, but no way. I could not find any strange message in the log files of xorg, none infinite loop, nothing... I would be happy if at least somebody suggests how to track the problem. Random killing of processing seems to me to be very inefficient (I have more than 150 tasks per session). -- MASTER: xorg high cpu usage, general system sluggishness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/294972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hm. Have you tried with loose bindings? 'compiz --replace --loose- bindings' Also, I'm just making sure, have you also updated nvidia-settings with the graphics driver? I looked and it seems that nvidia-settings doesn't really depend on much so it's possible it may have slipped through. I really don't have much of a clue at this point. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance
Nope, but id did just now, but the performance stays the same. I did upgrade a small laptop which is using a nVidia 8400M GS chip to Meercat Alpha 2+ and it's performing way better.. Don't know exactly what changed (yet), but is seems to use the same Compiz and nVidia driver. My nvidia-settings have the same version as the driver (256.35), delaying it's startup seems to make a little difference until I open lots of windows, which actually is kinda the same as this issue in general. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572818] Re: X wont start
This affects me too! I had to reinstall Lucid because of some problems. I changed to the vesa driver by using a backup copy of xorg.conf from my previous install. However, I got this message at login. In my previous install, I had done some pretty complicated stuff which I don't remember to disable kernel modesetting and use the vesa driver, which I don't remember now. So I decided to use the fbdev driver. I found this in the xorg.conf.failsafe presumably output by ubuntu at some point. The driver loads and X starts up. From a functional point of view, I can't see much difference (as yet) between vesa and fbdev. But the above problem does exist and I will be glad to provide config files etc. in case needed -- X wont start https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572818 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532436] Re: nvidia driver sometime does not load at boot
I'm not computer expert, and perhaps my following comment could be a stupid matter ... Recently I was affected by both bugs: bug #439448 and bug bug #575410 - both are related to gnome-panel. Both bugs were temporary fixed (workaround) onto my system just adding a 3 seconds delay before gnome-panel starts after gdm login. If there is a race conditions for the nvidia driver, it could be worth trying to add a 3-5 seconds delay to X / gdm start up. If someone could tell me how to try this X startup delay, then I will be happy to help You: I will downgrade to previous drivers (removing the PPA versions) and I will try the delayed X startup. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 611380] [NEW] using kde apps in gnome crashes x server
You have been subscribed to a public bug: (As this bug probably has something to do with the interaction between the KDE app(s) in question and GNOME and X, I'm not totally sure where to put this.) --- tl;dr: If I'm using a KDE app during a GNOME session, sometimes it will log me out, which upon further research is caused by an X Server crash. This happens sporadically and I have not been able to pin down any one action that causes it, but it seems to be because of some sort of segmentation fault. --- I'm using the usual Ubuntu (GNOME) install, updated regularly but running one or two KDE-based apps on top of it - the one that most commonly triggers this condition is KolourPaint on top of GNOME, but that's because that's the one I most commonly use. (Then again, I'm using it because GNOME-based paint program clones are not nearly at that level of development.) This is what I generally do: 1. Log in and start any GNOME programs. This works fine. 2. Start the KDE-based program. This also works fine. 3. At some point while fooling around with said KDE-based program, the entire X Server is brought down. No, I can't seem to isolate this to any particular action or set of actions. Notes: 1. This error seems to have replaced the fact that when said program crashes, it brings up an error screen with the intent to report a bug, where the button to actually report said bug is nonfunctional (due to the fact that I do not actually have a full complement of Kubuntu packages). 2. The error in question, both in the previous report-a-bug screen and now with X crashes, seems to be some sort of segmentation fault. Not that I know what that means. 3. I didn't report this error when it brought up the KDE error screen. I report it now. That's because I'd vastly prefer catching bugs, even without saving program state, to completely upending X. Ending every program without so much as giving the user a chance to save state is /not nice/. 4. Despite the fact that I'm not totally sure whether this is an X bug or not, I used the report-with-X-info anyway; it might be useful. 5. I'm going to get a backtrace as soon as I can. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 597753] Re: Entire UI(Gnome+apps) behaves like shift button is continually pressed
I experience the same problem, since one week now - and only on Ubuntu, not on Windows. I have a quiet new keyboard and just re-seated the connector on the mainboard (its a notebook). The problem is still there (only on Ubuntu) - so I can quiet sure exclude any hardware issues. I have no flash activated and experience the problem on gedit, evolution and in the browser. So I think this has nothing to do with the software that is being used. The problem goes away usually after some seconds or minutes of inactivity. Sometimes I have the impression, that it is being caused by Ctrl+Shift combinations, but this might be pure chance, since it definitely happened after simple keypresses (like Return), too. Yes, I'm a fast writer. I was already guessing for something like Orca interfering, but all this is completely disabled. I just made some user-defined settings in keystroke-combinations settings dialogue, but I can't see anything strange, there. Help would really be appreciated, thanks. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 539163] Re: [Legacy Radeon cards] Desktop effects/compiz: display brightness fluctuation with zoom, workspace switch or Expo
@ Andreas Modinos, Your solution worked well, although it was confusing. Specifically, you should do the following: 1. Go to compizconfig-settings-manager (if you don't have it, in terminal: sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager ) 2. On the left side, go to Category General Options Display Settings (Tab) Lighting (uncheck box). I'm wondering if this could be disabled by default or if it is neccesary for new video cards. Thanks for the fix. -- [Legacy Radeon cards] Desktop effects/compiz: display brightness fluctuation with zoom, workspace switch or Expo https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539163 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] ATI RADEON HD5570 from HIS
Hi! Thanks for a good PPA. I have a question though. I just bought a RADEON HD 5570 with 1 GB DDR3, I wanted to get rid om slowness when using full-HD sent via HDMI to my 47 LCD-TV. But the problems seems to stay even though I am using this new graphics card. I am also using your PPA as repo and has the latest driver installed. Is this problem something you recognize from other people? I am using my LCD only to surf the web and watch film. The mouse behaves slow...feels like it shouldnt... Thanks!
