[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660451] Re: X memory leak

2010-10-15 Thread Peter Hoeg
And just to be sure it wasn't the desktop environment (KDE in my case)
that did something wonky with X, I tried running XFCE for the last
couple of hours and I can confirm that X is still leaking worse than the
Deepwater Horizon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660980] [NEW] Incorrect dual display behaviour

2010-10-15 Thread Dariusz Dwornikowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

using ubuntu 10.10 on the hardware as attached by apport. Normally in
10.04 when I did dual display it worked fine. Now the display is
detected fine, but I cannot move any of the windows to the external
display. However i can move few pixels of them, they can be seen on the
left edge, like just a small piece of them.

My workaround is to move the external display below the main display,
then it works. I assume it can be some problem with virtual resolution ?

The external display is LG 24, 1900x1200 resolution.

Mirror works perectly fine, the problem is only with the dual head.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)

2010-10-15 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Hi everyone - I'm one of the devs that have spent extensive time chasing
this slowness issue. I assure you I can relate to your disappointment
over a sluggish system. It's buggering me a lot as well.

The problem is that on some systems Unity runs perfectly fast (for
instance on my Eee 1001, intel 945GME, Atom N270, which is definitely
*not* a high end netbook by today's standards - on the contrary :-)),
while on other systems (also with much higher specs) it runs very
slowly. This makes it pretty tricky to debug if you don't have the right
hardware as you can imagine.

So; any thoughts, tinkering, playing around, or hardcore profiling you
guys do are most appreciated! While I can see that there is a lot of
general slowness - it would be most valuable to hear if *anything* runs
fast? That could make it easier to narrow down the problem.

While you're at it, you might also want to try an run Unity with the
environment variable CLUTTER_VBLANK=none set. This has reportedly fixed
the issue for some. To test it out simply run 'CLUTTER_VBLANK=none
mutter --replace' from a terminal. If it works for you, you can make it
permanent by executing 'sudo echo CLUTTER_VBLANK=none
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/10unity-quirks'.

Thanks for all the input so far!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 drivers in Maverick

2010-10-15 Thread paercebal
Same problem for me.

I wonder if normal people could have found the dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg
/extra-modules/nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: miEmptyData source of
their problem. Because starting 10.10 on a blackwhite console is far
from sexy (not mentioning irritating). Having to dig the logs is
something my mother wouldn't have been able to.

A warning prior upgrade would have been nice...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660999] [NEW] Fading effect slow with KMS in maverick

2010-10-15 Thread Eugene Crosser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

On maverick with KMS enabled, programs that use video fading effect
are unusably slow, screen updates freeze for seconds with X server
using 100% CPU. Easy way to demonstrate it is to view this slideshow
with Firefox:

http://www.electricprism.com/aeron/slideshow/example1.html

The problem is also apparent with other programs like F-Spot's
slideshow, and is observable on different hardware with different models
of Radeon adapters.

The effect disappears if you disable KMS (by adding radeon.modeset=0
to the kernel command line).

Reported to xorg team https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30872
and it turns out that the problem is fixed in newer versions of the
driver. It does happen when running default 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu5 version
but does not happen with the version from xorg-edgers PPA
1:6.13.99+git20101012.0d1f9fd0-0ubuntu0sarvatt.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xorg

Following an online update from Kubuntu Lucid to Maverick beta, use of
almost any of the 'special' buttons on the keyboard (mail, home, documents,
play/pause, volume up, zoom in...) fires a ButtonPress event (as seen by
xev) for the physically left mouse button (i.e. left click with the mouse
set right-handed, 'right click' if set left-handed). There is no
corresponding ButtonRelease, so the computer acts as if that mouse button is
held down. The ButtonPress occurs between the KeyPress and KeyRelease events
 of the special key.

This makes the mouse essentially unusable. So far, I've not found a way to
reset it besides logging off (i.e. restarting X).

 Hardware:
 - Basic Microsoft keyboard and mouse (optical wheel mouse, Digital Media
 Keyboard 3000)
 - Intel graphics (lspci says it's an 82G33/31 integrated graphics
 controller)

Initially I thought the problem was related to kwin compositing (which also
causes some problems, see bug 630632 ), but I've found it happening even
 with desktop effects turned off.

I don't know if xorg is the best package to file this against, so if not,
please point me in the right direction.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 631933] Re: X freeze during boot after 10.04 LTS upgrade to 10.10 Beta

2010-10-15 Thread Gustav Botes
Hi,
I have got the same problem as Jacob. I am also using a Acer Travel Mate 6592G
running Ubuntu 10.04. I have loaded updates earlier this week and since have
the exact same problem getting the tpm_transmit tpm_send: error 4294967234.
My laptop starts up then gives me a black screen with a login prompt. When I
leave it for about 3-5 minutes it continues to flash another error code and
then only starts the normal X window. After that I can sign in and work
normally.
Is there any resolution to this problem?

Gustav

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661035] [NEW] Xorg massive memory use, no background, no middle click

2010-10-15 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Upgraded from Lucid to Maverick
After update - when logging in the desktop background will show. After a minute
it will turn white. Right-click change desktop background results in 100% cpu

Checking system monitor shows Xorg server using 650mb + memory.

In another note (possibly unrelated), my laptop's middle click stopped
working.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661111] [NEW] Disable button not functioning correctly on Synaptics Touchpad

2010-10-15 Thread James White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

My disable button for my Synaptics touchpad has never worked correctly
in Ubuntu. From the start the disable button has never functioned.

I managed to find a (sort of) fix to get the button to disable, and that
was to change the keybindings, the default value in gconf-editor did not
correspond to the actual shortcut key. The default value was
XF86TouchpadToggle, however when I created a keyboard shortcut the
disable button registers as Help, so I changed the value of the touchpad
key binding in gconf-editor and my touchpad works, but the problem is, I
have to press the disable button twice to get it to disable and twice to
re-neable it again. So I feel that there is more a persistent problem
with my machine.

My computer is a Compaq Presario CQ60-307EA, with the Synaptics
Touchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 drivers in Maverick

2010-10-15 Thread paercebal
Thanks to eMcE's hack, I succeeded in getting my screen back.

Still, there one glitch : Upon restarting, it went on the console,
because it could not find the nvidia driver. I guess it was because I
installed nvidia-current alongside nvidia-96. The solution was to choose
nvidia-96 driver instead of nvidia-current (for my video card, I use the
96 driver).

Please note that before eMcE's last step (Restart), I did edit my
xorg.conf file to put it back the configuration that worked for me on
Ubuntu 10.04.

The steps were:

1. Start Ubuntu on recovery mode
2. On the ugly menu, choose failsafe mode for one session only
3. When logged in, go to Menu - System - Administration -Hardware Drivers
4. You should see two drivers, the NVIDIA accelerated graphic drivers (version
current) (which is green, i.e., in use, and the NVIDIA accelerated
graphic drivers (version 96) [Recommended] which is not used.
5. Select NVIDIA accelerated graphic drivers (version 96) [Recommended] and
Activate it (the button on the down right of the window)
6. Restart
7. Enjoy the purple screen

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636311] Re: Keyboard special keys interfere with mouse

2010-10-15 Thread Angus Turnbull
For anyone wanting a semi-fix that doesn't entail restarting while
waiting for evdev to be updated:

1) Even if the mouse is frozen, press Alt-F2 and type gnome-terminal
without quotes, then Enter.
2) Type xinput list without quotes, Enter, and note the id of the keyboard
listed under Virtual core pointer.
3) Type the following and press Enter, replacing 9 with your ID:

xinput set-prop 9 Device Enabled 0

Your media keys will now be disabled and your keyboard and mouse work
otherwise normally until you suspend or reboot. Works for my MS Wired
Keyboard 600.

broken now in 10.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661170] [NEW] dropped frames using vdpau

2010-10-15 Thread Vincent Tschanz
Public bug reported:

ubuntu 10.10
Libvdpau1 0.4.5ubuntu1
GeForce 8500GT
Nvidia 260.19.06ubuntu1

Open a 720p or 1080p h264 video in smplayer with external subtitles
(srt)

problem : when the first subtitle appear on screen, frames are dropped for a
couple of seconds.
This happen too when no subtitles are used, but the dropped frames are
unpredictable, this may happen on a slow motion / low complexity scene.

The same video played with smplayer or totem using XV plays fine (not
the 1080p of course, my celeron does not have the sufficient horsepower)

VDPAU on 10.04 worked just fine, this problem appear to me with the
10.10 upgrade.

Can I provide more useful informations?

** Affects: libvdpau (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661182] [NEW] package nvidia-current 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-10-15 Thread unfa
Public bug reported:

I freshly downloaded Ubuntu desktop 10.10 (beta?) and installed it to my
USB key from another Ubuntu.

I launched the new 10.10 from USB key in test (live) mode for the
first time, and I wanted to install nVidia drivers in it. It failed
everytime with the same a strange error popup window appearing just
before the progress bar went 100% (I tried 3~4 times). At the end, the
app. which was installing the driver hanged and I had to close it with
'Force Quit' applet.

However, after I killed the hanging window I tried to re-create the bug
to take a screenshot of the error message, but I saw that my driver is
installed instead. Well, I'am happy it is but the application is surely
was behaving buggy and I was very surprised that it actually managed to
install nVidia driver.

What's even more strange, when I launched the desktop properties via
context menu for desktop change wallpaper. And tried to turn on
desktop effects (compiz) it prompted me to install nVidia driver again
(but I saw that it is already installed just a minute ago!). I clicked
okay and the application is swinging the progress bar and I'am waiting
to see what will happen next.

A massage box shown with a message:
Please run Appearance/Desktop Effects again after restarting the computer,
when the new graphics driver is active.
So maybe it tried to install the nVidia driver again because it wasn't active
yet? I don't know, I hope you know.

I'am going down for a restart now and see what will happen (I have a 4gb
persistance file so my driver should be saved for live session)

I hope this information will be helpful :-) Thank you for your support!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 527912] Re: Wacom Bamboo CTH-661 not recognized

2010-10-15 Thread Stefan Bader
Lucid support has also been implemented by a linux-backports-modules
update. Marking the kernel task as won't fix for that reason.

** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification:
+
+ Impact: Some of the newer wacom tablet models are not supported by the
+ in-kernel driver. Those seem to be mostly multi-touch capable tablets.
+
+ Fix: To add support without regressing the current kernel driver, the
+ LBM package will now have an input sub-packager (need to adapt meta!)
+ which contains the driver taken from linux-next.
+
+ Testcase: Testers in the bug report confirmed working tablets witht the
+ backports modules installed.

2010-10-15 Thread Stefan Bader
The same LBM approach is taken for Maverick. I will leave the
development task open for now. As the support is in linux-next and Natty
probably settles with 2.6.37 or later, this would need to get verified
whenever we are close to Natty release.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661235] [NEW] live-cd boot does not work with nvidia ion (ZOTAC GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi)

2010-10-15 Thread typo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

When I want to boot Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 using the desktop cd, the boot
always freezes. I have a ZOTAC GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi. I think it's
because of nouveau, because when I tried it on my system, which normally
uses official nvidia driver, the boot will freeze the same way. I used
an live-cd of an older version of Ubuntu, which works fine, to repair
the system by setting Xorg.conf to use the nvidia driver.

Currently I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with the mainline 2.6.34 kernel,
because the current-nvidia driver always crashs with the original
kernel.

I would like you to blacklist my graphic card at least, so that I can
use the desktop-cd with the vesa driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 527912] Re: Wacom Bamboo CTH-661 not recognized

2010-10-15 Thread Stefan Bader
As long as the change has not become part of the official linux-
backports-modules package you actually may loose support when there is a
newer kernel with a higher abi number. I am right now trying to get this
done. Then you would need to install linux-backports-modules-input-
generic-pae (which is a meta package pointing to the right package) and
this will update the input drivers on future updates.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] [NEW] All Nvidia drivers fail to load

2010-10-15 Thread Martin Owens

nvidia-260 dumps into command line

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659527] Re: xorg server crashes with nvidia-current

2010-10-15 Thread Nuno Sucena Almeida
Hi Eddy, I don't think it's related. Probably my xorg file mislead you,
since I reverted to nouveau to be able to post the report. With nvidia-
current I tried both with and without xinerama, so I don't think that's
the issue. I reverted the system to lucid, but I'll try again this
weekend with maverick and make some more tests - do you recommend
anything in particular?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: All Nvidia drivers fail to load

2010-10-15 Thread Alberto Milone
The following lines in dmesg show that the driver complains about the
fact that the card is not supported:

[ 18.981091] NVRM: The NVIDIA GPU :01:00.0 (PCI ID: 10de:0407) installed
[ 18.981092] NVRM: in this system is not supported by the 260.19.06 NVIDIA

[ 18.981128] NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).
[ 18.981130] NVRM: None of the NVIDIA graphics adapters were initialized!

I find it a bit weird as GeForce 8600M GT should be supported:

Same problem here.
2 screens, nvidia and xinerama activated.

Screenie or other Qt app = logged out.

I report the same problem (Jean-Paul Argudo and MikeB) about weird bug about
cursor sometimes starting shaking between the two screen (near the between
zone), and then 100%CPU with hard reboot needed.
I had this problem 3 times before upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10.

Felix Kuehling is right.
Running 'sudo aticonfig --initial -f' and rebooting solved the problem.

Not a bug.

sorry, how did you know about the improper detection, it had been referred to
in the xinput, devices and Xorg.0.log as Synaptics Touchpad. also I need to

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661170] Re: dropped frames using vdpau

2010-10-15 Thread Vincent Tschanz
The Sintel movie can be a good test for this problem :
http://www.sintel.org/wp-content/content/download.html
The Full 2048 x 872 px mp4 surround 5.1 with srt subtiles (bottom of the page)
is just fine.

After some tests, I have found this :

- Install vdpau-va-driver, configure VLC to use GPU acceleration.
- The video with subs plays perfectly.

- Smplayer with vdpau : frames are dropped when a subtitle is drawn.

- Gnome Mplayer with vdpau : frames are dropped when a subtitle is
drawn.

This may be a Mplayer specific bug.

Can someone confirm this?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661327] [NEW] User interface stutters / laggy when mouse NOT moving

2010-10-15 Thread larson.eri...@gmail.com
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I am not certain this is an Xorg problem, but some of the time
(~10-20%?) my system stutters if I am not moving the mouse. Music I'm
playing will skip badly and CPU usage will stay elevated. Text I type in
terminals is slow to appear. If I wave my mouse around the screen like a
madman, the stuttering goes away. I have noticed sometimes it even
occurs at the login screen, and seems to prevent my login from working
properly.

This has happened to several people:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1586678

I have tried (and am currently running) the X-Updates PPA, but that did
not help. This bug occurred whether I used the standard Maverick release
version of X, the X-Updates X, Nouveau as my video driver, or the
proprietary NVIDIA driver as my video driver. This was not an issue for
me under Lucid, so it is a regression.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655284] Re: bottom part of the touchpad is not working

@Ahmed
The title of this bug stuck out to me because the bottom area of the Clickpad
is disabled in the kernel for button detection. All I had to do was take a
look at the Dmesg log to confirm the problem. The Dmesg log shows Synaptics:
Clickpad mode enabled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583005] Re: video corruption after xrandr

2010-10-15 Thread Joseph Tate
This is still occurring. Here are some more things I've tried to clear
it.

Sometimes it seems that I can remove the corruption by changing the
display resolution to something extremely low, but I haven't been able
to get that to work reliably.

I've tried rerunning my dock/undock scripts.

I've tried kwin --replace, and even a different window manager.

I've tried changing the refresh rates.

The only thing that reliably fixes it is logging out and back in. Of
course if I reboot, or restart Xorg from the KDM login screen, xorg
comes up in clone mode instead of with the DVI display left of the
LVDS.

This corruption occurs every time I run the above described xrandr
commands, but I can't capture the corruption via a screen grab tool.

It worked with lucid for me, too.

2010-10-15 Thread hejpadej
I had a working X but since I ran the latest updates for Ubuntu yesterday I got
the error X: ../../../../include/privates.h:122: dixGetPrivateAddr: Assertion
`key-initialized' failed.
Aborted

Look at the log from the strace command.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT doesn't work with nvidia-current 260

2010-10-15 Thread Aaron Plattner
The GPU is not responding correctly to CPU accesses, hence the nouveau
error message of, Unsupported chipset 0x. This is not a
driver bug: it could be a bug in the kernel, or a hardware problem.

** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed = Invalid

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 656067] Re: Wacom Tablet mouse-wheel always scrolls down

2010-10-15 Thread falcaf
The solution is here, but it need ubuntu kernel compilation : too
difficult for me. So if someone can do that, it would be great

cordialement,

http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg10577.html

This fixes a regression introduced in
3b57ca0f80c5c8994b5b1e3d3f904cfe727951f2.

The data[6] byte contains either 1 or -1 depending on the whether the
mouse wheel on older wacom tablets is moved down (1) or up (-1). The
patch introduced in the above commit changed the cast from (signed char)
to (signed). When cast as a signed integer and negated, the value of -1
(stored in the byte as 0xff) became -255 rather than 1. This patch
reverts the cast to a (signed char) and also removes an unnecessary
(signed) cast, as all the values operated on are bitmasked.
