[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663660] Re: KWin+Radeon+Latest Kernel AMD64 Constantly Crash
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: I am using Kubuntu 10.10 AMD64, fully up-to-date. Everything works well, except for my graphics card. I have a Radeon X1250, and whenever I try to load the KWin desktop effects, things crash. Before the last kernel update, they would run for maybe 1-5 minutes before crashing, but with the latest update, X is crashing before they even initialize. Graphics acceleration is working well, and in fact things run (though slowly) using XRender. I do not know where to begin in reporting this bug. I can confirm that I'm not the only one; see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1594240 I am going to see if it is only a problem on AMD64 systems, but would like to see this fixed. Rebooted w/o nvidia in low graphics mode - perhaps because I purged nvidia*? 3. System|Administration|Additional Drivers - jocky does not find the nvidia-96 drivers. 4. Reinstall nvidia-96 manually: sudo apt-get install nvidia-96... reboot. System|Administration|Additional Drivers shows nvidia-96 proprietary driver is activated & currently in use. 5. System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects|Extra - works (basic wobbly windows etc). System|Administration|NVIDIA X Server Settings works. 6. Install compiz-settings-manager. System|Preferences|CompizConfig Settings Manager - cube & rotate cube works. The only part that bothers me is the initial failure of jockey to recognize & offer to install the nvidia-96 driver. While this may possibly be related to my purging nvidia*, jockey should (IMO) still detect the card following the clean reboot. So, until someone can explain why it does not: nvidia-96 96.43.19-0ubuntu1 works, but jockey 0.5.10-0ubuntu5.2 does not. -- ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/626974 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-96 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583714] Re: [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: no space while unhiding cursor
The Fedora bug for this problem has a patch here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=537065#c53 . I've been running with the patch on my work machine which had the same problem for the past week and no problems with disappearing mouse pointers or "no space" kernel messages. Fedora is now including this patch in their kernel according to the last comment in that bug (however, the last time I checked upstream, they weren't yet). Please consider applying the patch from the fedora bug to the Ubuntu kernel. This is also a duplicate bug about mouse problems with nouveau which i believe is the same problems, butI can't find the bug right now. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 346289] Re: MASTER: Choppy Flash playback in full screen
Hello Gentlemen, To hopefully quell the amount of comments this bug report is getting, I've taken some time to fill in the description of this bug report with a summary of the situation. Please take a moment to read it. Really, this is not a video driver bug specifically, but rather an issue with how Adobe Flash is implemented to *use* the video driver. That's why the behavior can vary depending on the type or version of video driver being tested. Also, really it's not just one specific bug, but a collection of issues several of which are fundamental design flaws in Adobe's implementation. Adobe has provided some nicely written and illustrated materials explaining these design issues, which I've linked to in the description and would encourage you to check out. I am not sure there is really anything we can do at the distro level. There are a couple workarounds I can think of, but I have a feeling they'd end up causing more breakages than they solve. It would be interesting to experiment with them, but unfortunately my plate is quite full with other projects so I will leave the experiments to any of you that would like to indulge your curiosity. In the one case, where we would force OverrideGPUValidation=true as a default in flashplugin-nonfree, this is quite straightforward to implement - just include a config file in the flashplugin-nonfree debian/ directory to be installed to /etc/adobe/ when the package is installed. The challenge is that we would need this tested across a breadth of different video driver combinations, with and without Compiz and/or Unity enabled. This could be crowd-sourced, with results tabulated in a wiki similar to how we've done with other testing (see the results table on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Testing/NouveauEvaluation ... something akin to that would be nice). The other option I can think of would be to redirect the 'fullscreen' action in Flash, to launch Totem or whatever the default video player is. For this option, we'd need to see a working proof of concept that folks could play with. This has some obvious tradeoffs in terms of usability so the benefit would need to be quite striking. I think this would be a fairly straightforward project one of you could do. There could well be other options as well I've not thought of. In any case, what we need are proof of concepts that demonstrate that they do indeed work. Please keep in mind that what works for you may not work as well for someone else, but for Ubuntu we need to address as broad a range of user needs as possible, so the more testing you can do of your concept, the better. I hope all this information is useful, sorry this is not an issue we can trivially fix at the distro level. I am hopeful that this explanation inspires someone to produce a good proof of concept of some better solution, that would let the Desktop team invest resources into getting it integrated into Ubuntu proper for everyone. ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) => flashplugin- nonfree (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => New -- Choppy Flash playback in full screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/346289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 316514] Re: MASTER: Xinerama/Multihead with multiple video cards is not supported for most video drivers
** Summary changed: - MASTER: Xinerama/Multihead with several video cards is not supported + MASTER: Xinerama/Multihead with multiple video cards is not supported for most video drivers ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg [Problem] X does not support (or does not support very well) displaying a desktop across more than one video card. When it is possible, a variety of bugs are experienced. [Discussion] Prior to the introduction of Xrandr it was (sometimes) possible to configure xorg.conf to display on multiple video cards. One could then use Xinerama, etc. to stitch screens into a contiguous desktop. Of course, any alterations to this setup usually required hand-tuning xorg.conf. The introduction of Xrandr made a number of things much easier, however it is not good at handling the case of multiple video cards. It can handle dual-head displays, where both monitors are connected to separate outputs on the same video card, but does not work as well with outputs on two different cards. The fundamental problem (as I understand it) is essentially that X can talk to only one physical "pool" of memory, and each card has its own physical pool. Recent developments including GEM and several kernel changes promise to remedy this by enabling these pools to be aggregated and managed as a single virtual pool. Once the X server and drivers are updated to utilize this new architecture, they should be able to support multi-card functionality with Xrandr as well as (and better than) the old Xinerama configuration, including reconfiguring the display without needing to edit xorg.conf or restart X. [Exceptions] As mentioned above, the problem is most notable with drivers that have switched from Xinerama to Xrandr. If you're using an older driver that still uses the old Xinerama approach, you *might* find it works acceptably. In my own testing, I've found cases where I could get displays across multiple cards (separate screens per-card) when running xrandr, but I ran into so many different bugs (mouse not working properly, X crashing, display corruption, etc.) that it was essentially unusable. Even if it could be made to work, this configuration is quite non-standard and not well tested. Resolving those issues will likely wait until the aforementioned architecture is fully in place. + + The closed source -nvidia driver still uses Xinerama (it never got + around to implementing Xrandr), so you can achieve multiple head + displays that way. The nvidia configuration tool will be able to + construct the xorg.conf settings for you to achieve Xinerama multi-head. -- MASTER: Xinerama/Multihead with multiple video cards is not supported for most video drivers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 430919] Re: xserver cannot read V_BIOS of second graphics card
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 316514 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316514 To the extent of my knowledge, none of the open source video drivers support multi-card. See bug #316514 which is the primary master bug for this issue. It sounds like this bug report is essentially a dupe of that one. The closed source binary -nvidia driver supports this configuration via Xinerama. Again, look to the support fora for assistance in making that work. Regarding the -nvidia driver stability, I acknowledge that it can be hit or miss; we conducted a concerted QA effort around it in Lucid and found it was generally solid for many users. Ultimately though, even if we find bugs in the closed source drivers pre-release there's often not much we can do about that at the distro level. Perhaps the newer -nvidia in maverick will give you better luck, or you could use one of the (unsupported) versions from nvidia's website. Again though, this is treading into the realm of technical support so I'd encourage you to seek help in the nvidia user's forums or askubuntu.com or similar. ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 316514 MASTER: Xinerama/Multihead with several video cards is not supported * You can subscribe to bug 316514 by following this link: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/316514/+subscribe -- xserver cannot read V_BIOS of second graphics card https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430919 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680614] [NEW] Position of second monitor wrong in dual monitor setup if first monitor is 1366x768
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I'm using a two-monitor setup with an ati graphics card (Mobility Radeon HD 4300) on my laptop(lenovo u450p). The Laptop screen has a hardware resolution of 1366x768, the external monitor a hardware resolution of 1920x1080. If I set up the second monitor using xrandr --output HDMI-0 --off xrandr --output LVDS --auto xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto --right-of LVDS (or the kde gui, the effects are equal) I expect 1) the left 1366x768 area to be on the laptop screen, and 2) the right 1920x768 area to be on the big monitor. But I observe: 1) happens as expected 2) happens almost. instead, the 2 rightmost pixels on the laptop monitor are repeated on the left border of the big monitor(filled with black to the bottom), in turn the two rightmost columns of the virtual display area are not visible on any monitor at all. If I switch the laptop monitor resolution to 1280x720, this effect does not occur, and - except for the then blurred laptop screen - everything works as expected. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660783] Re: after suspend: trackpoint and touchpad unresponsive for 5-10 sec
+1 for having this on Lenovo. My laptop is a T61p. I haven't really figured out when it happens but maybe it happens more after I have suspended many times. I haven't really noticed that it is unresponsive a little period of time but only that it does not work at all after a resume from suspend sometimes. The only button that works on the keyboard is the ON/OFF. If I press it for 2-3 seconds I get the login screen. I have this issue right now but I connected external keyboard+mouse via USB. That works. I will try to create a similar hardware.txt and attach. Btw, I never had this issue before and I have had every release since 8.10 on this laptop I think. -- after suspend: trackpoint and touchpad unresponsive for 5-10 sec https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660783 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680542] [NEW] [ati radeon xpress 200M] vertical color lines on start-up
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati This happens on a vostro 1000 with ati radeon xpress 200M integrated graphics. I removed proprietary fglrx driver following instruction on Ubuntu community pages. Doing this, made bug #498586 dissappear, but another one appear. Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 10.10 86_64 Package version: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu5 when the system starts, a blinking cursor appears after which the login screen should appear. Instead, vertical color pixel lines appear all over the screen. This also happens while changing user in a running system. A temporary 'workaround' is closing the lid of the laptop and re-opening it. This makes the lines dissappear and login screen shows up. This doesn't work when changing user in a running system, forced shut-down and reboot is neccessary. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 680291] Re: Screen freezes occasionally, Toshiba Satellite A100, Ubuntu 10.04
- This Toshiba Satellite works find with Ubuntu 9.10. But with 10.04, I occasionally get a frozen screen. The computer still works, it reacts to keys and all, but the screen is blank. Pressing the power button shuts down the computer cleanly, and after restart it's ok again. There are no currently known scenarios in which this always happens; it's not respoduceable / sporadic (and nasty). I have to go back to 9.10 for now. - Disactivating desktop visual effects did not resolve the problem - The graphic device is Mobility Radeon X1400 - With Ubuntu 10.10.
