[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748137] Re: unity rendering broken with fglrx (black masks)
Add the daily build PPA from here: https://launchpad.net/~unity/+archive/daily. Fully update your system. Log into unity session. If nothing comes on screen, try logging out again. You will eventually see unity interface. Also be prepared to run the command: compiz --replace for crashes. But take a note that your eyes will bleed because unity will be extremely laggy. I don't know what is causing it. So I purged the PPA and now I am happy with classic desktop. Once this fglrx patch lands in next compiz release in natty, I will file a separate bug for laggy unity. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748137 Title: unity rendering broken with fglrx (black masks) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748320] Re: Blank screen (no GUI) after installation of NVidia proprietary driver on Sony Vaio Z119GS
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg - I am testing Natty 20110328 Live Desktop CD for amd64, as part of the Xorg-prop-drivers-testers group. - My notebook is a Sony Vaio VPC Z119GC (Intel Core i7-620M CPU and 4 gigabytes of RAM). I always leave it on the Speed setting. - * When set to ‘Stamina’, the machine uses the motherboard’s Intel chipset for graphics. - NVidia proprietary drivers have never installed and run properly on Sony Vaio VPC Z series models when using standard installation procedures (either Desktop Live CD, Alternate CD, 32 bit or 64 bit installers). I have tried and failed to install NVidia proprietary drivers for Karmic, Lucid, Maverick and now Natty. The best you get is a relatively unresponsive blank screen. You never get in to the GUI. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748768] Re: Why does my mouse point to a place besides where the cursor is pointing?
Just got 11.04 burned on the slowest speed. Now, I've installed it. Still buggy, after I suspend and resume it makes those columns and was able to determine their color: thin Green lines with wide Black background strips. At least when I resumed, after restarting to get rid of the green lines in a blank screen, it didn't make the text unreadable. Thanks for showing me where to change the Unity. I changed it to classic, no effects yet the problem still persists. Even the screen saver previews are still very choppy. Again, the screen saver was fine on 10.10. Both versions have the arrow selecting lower than its point and the bottom Panel cut off even if I change the vertical positioning buttons on the monitor. Plus part of the left side of the screen is on the right side of the monitor. description: VGA compatible controller product: NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU] vendor: nVidia Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@:02:00.0 version: a3 width: 32 bits clock: 66MHz capabilities: pm agp agp-2.0 vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=nouveau latency=64 maxlatency=1 mingnt=5 resources: irq:16 memory:fc00-fcff memory:ec00-efff memory:f350-f357 memory:fda0-fda1 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748768 Title: Why does my mouse point to a place besides where the cursor is pointing? ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748768] [NEW] Why does my mouse point to a place besides where the cursor is pointing?
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 10.10 I Printed Screen to show what I'm talking about while the problem is ongoing. But, I opened the picture and it looked normal instead even while the problem was ongoing. Whenever I boot up the computer it is like this or after I fix it and then the screen saver starts it reverts back to the problem. The power management does not cause this problem. The problem was there from the start: during the installation. I can fix it temporarily by applying a different resolution and then reverting back to the resolution without saving the new applied resolution. This fixes both the pointer from pointing at the bottom of the pointer icon and the whole screen, even besides the background, from being tiled and cut off at the bottom the same distance that the pointer points problematically. The screen is also shifted to the left. The left part that is cut off is shown on the right side of the monitor. But the mouse does not show on the right side when I put it past the left side, only everything else. The cut off portion at the bottom does not come out the other side at the top, but the top menu bar is larger than normal and the Firefox icon has a blue streak emanating from the end of the blue portion of the Firefox logo straight to the top. If I enter Configure Display Settings again after it is fixed, it right away makes the problem again. I expect it to fit the screen without me having to, temporarily, fix it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748729] [NEW] package libx11-dev (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive
Public bug reported: I'm not certain what caused this error but I was installing "eclipse integrated development environment" from the "Ubuntu Software Center" and I think it was related to that. The Eclipse package seems to have installed correctly and runs as expected. After the libx11 crash I also got message boxes saying the "items cannot be installed until package catalog is repaired" but clicking repair gives the error "Package Operation Failed." These two messages now appear every time I try to use the Ubuntu Software Center. This is in Ubuntu Natty Beta1 on Intel hardware running in an Oracle VirtualBox machine. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748632] [NEW] Opening or resizing videos with vdpau enabled causes xorg freeze (nvidia-current)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg There are frequent system freezes in Ubuntu 10.10, mostly happening with vdpau, with both stable and beta drivers. The xorg version is 1:7.5+6ubuntu3. I do not actually know if this is a problem in the graphics driver or in xorg, but the bug does not exist with the (almost) same drivers in 9.10 with the same hardware. I am using a Geforce 9400M card. The following series of events will typically produce errors in the kernel log in 5-10 minutes: 1. Log into Ubuntu 10.10. In my case, this is in KDE 4.5.5. 2. Shut down all possible programs and open a console running "tail -f /var/log/kern.log" so you can see the error as it happens. Disable compositing to make things simpler. 3. Open a video in mplayer or smplayer with vdpau set as the video output. It is not necessary to use a high definition video. I used an xvid to test. Make it full screen and pause it. 4. Open another video instance. Use the keyboard to rapidly switch between full screen and normal resolution. Sometimes, you might need to close the movie and re-open it, but typically within 5 minutes, xorg will lock up. Video, mouse, keyboard, and sound will be frozen. Sometimes there will be brief moments in which the keyboard or mouse will react before freezing again. When xorg freezes, it is sometimes for only a minute but sometimes it locks up so hard that even Alt-SysReq REISUB cannot recover the system and you have no use but to cycle the power. You will rarely be able to change to a virtual console and kill mplayer. So when the lockup happens, use the keyboard and attempt to shut down the movie as soon as you can, because the longer you wait, the greater the chance of being unable to recover without a power cycle. When xorg recovers, your console showing the kernel log will show that one or more NVRM errors has just appeared: NVRM: Xid (:02:00): 13, 000a 502d 060c 036c 0040 NVRM: Xid (:02:00): 8, Channel 0002 NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context NVRM: Xid (:02:00): 8, Channel 0001 NVRM: Xid (:02:00): 13, 0007 502d 060c 036c 0040 NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0005 502d 060c 02a0 0040 NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0001 0001 NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 26, Ch 007f M 0100 D 08ecd9e0 intr 00c0 Along with the lockup, you may see graphics corruption. There will often be frozen green areas in the foreground or background videos. From this point on, the NVRM errors become easier to produce, and often opening the video you closed will lock up the system again. In normal use of vdpau, one will only see this bug once every day or two, forcing a power cycle or reboot. It can be caused by opening videos, switching to full screen, moving or resizing playing videos. I also saw it occur once when I changed KDE window decorations, which is probably not related to mplayer. Most of the bugs are related to special nvidia capabilities. I am not able to reproduce the crash if both videos are using xv video output. At least one of the two videos in the test must be using vdpau. The bug may well be in the graphics drivers, but as I mentioned before, those same drivers work flawlessly in karmic. I cannot rule out xorg as the culprit. At least one of the events I saw was not related to movie playing so I suspect that this would produce seemingly random crashes for users that do not watch a lot of movies. At the moment, I am attempting to get by turning off GPU acceleration of video (vdpau) and window management (desktop effects). This is not acceptable as a long term solution, but my current hope is that they will allow me to have over a day of uptime. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA
Bryce, No luck here :-( Still very, very broken in my home setup. A few pieces of information, though... 1) GDM seems to work correctly. ie, if I reboot my system with my external 24" Samsung 1920x1080 monitor hooked up, GDM comes up in mirror mode, full resolution and grandeur. When I log in, though, Classic or Unity, I get nothing on either monitor. Well, I get the flashing that Andres showed in his video. 2) I gave a talk today at Texas Linux Fest, and brought along a 10.04 LiveUSB. However, when I tested Natty against the monitors the conference provided, everything worked just fine. So perhaps the problem is monitor specific? My monitor is a relatively common Samsung SyncMaster 2333 24", that has worked perfectly from Hardy -> Maverick. It's only Natty that's batty. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748137] Re: unity rendering broken with fglrx (black masks)
I wouldn't normally opine into something like this, but on the off- chance that it could be a possible cause: Graphics Card: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M880G [Mobility Radeon HD 4200] Computer: Compaq Presario CQ62 OS: Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1 x86_64 I installed the FGLRX driver earlier today, and found it generally has issues with more or less everything OpenGL, proceeded to remove it, looked a bit into modprobe.d, and commented/removed two lines (one or both of which I may have added myself when I first installed 10.10): /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: "blacklist fglrx" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf: "blacklist radeonfb" I likewise modified xorg.conf to use fglrx, though this may have been unnecessary: Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" DefaultDepth24 EndSection Section "Module" Load"glx" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Driver "fglrx" EndSection At any rate, its just a possible cause; I had also prior to the installation of FGLRX had xorg-edgers installed (apt purged it before doing any of this, though), and the machine itself was an upgrade over 10.10. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660596] Re: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10
Hi people, the installation of the nvidia-driver (current-version) ends up in a black screen for me directly after reboot after having the driver installed. When the reboot starts, the harddrive works (the motor is running), but my screen tells me "no input-signal". So it seems to be better, not to install this driver as long as this is not fixed, it seems. Or does someone here have a better idea?? I really need help with this trouble. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748396] [NEW] Ubuntu hangs after plymouth
Public bug reported: This seems to be only a problem on Zotac 9300-ITX Board with integrated Nvidia 9300 GPU. I always use x-swat PPA for newest nvidia drivers, but the last update seems to have broken these integrated GPUs. This is a bug report for https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/ I always stuck after plymouth, recovery mode with failsafeX does work. 260.19.06 works fine, 270.29-0ubuntu1~maverick~xup2 brakes it. I also did try different xorg options, also including often mentioned Section "ServerFlags" Option "ignoreABI" "True" EndSection but none of them did help. it always stops with a kernel NULL pointer dereference, see kern.log for more details. I also searched for this bug, the only thread I found about it is in a german forum, also from a Zotac 9300-ITX user http://www.vdr- portal.de/index.php?page=Thread&postid=984729 ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: 9300 9300-itx bug hang nvidia zotac -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748396 Title: Ubuntu hangs after plymouth ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I saw that in addition to bluetooth driver, my graphics was not activated. So I activated both.. Later, it ask me to restart the machine... and the things went worst... NO UNITY only BLACK SCREEN Somehow I logged out and login to classic ubuntu.. gnome works fine... It seems to me the problem of graphics driver.. I uninstalled it after loogin via classic ubuntu... restart... and unity comes back :).. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748320] [NEW] NVidia Proprietary Driver fails to function at all after installation on Sony Vaio Z119GS (results in blank screen)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I am testing Natty 20110328 Live Desktop CD for amd64, as part of the Xorg-prop-drivers-testers group. My notebook is a Sony Vaio VPC Z119GC (Intel Core i7-620M CPU and 4 gigabytes of RAM). The hardware switch above the keyboard on my machine has 2 settings ‘speed’ and ‘stamina’ * When set to ‘Speed’, the machine uses the NVidia GeForce® GT 330M GPU). I always leave it on the Speed setting. * When set to ‘Stamina’, the machine uses the motherboard’s Intel chipset for graphics. NVidia proprietary drivers have never installed and run properly on Sony Vaio VPC Z series models when using standard installation procedures (either Desktop Live CD, Alternate CD, 32 bit or 64 bit installers). I have tried and failed to install NVidia proprietary drivers for Karmic, Lucid, Maverick and now Natty. The best you get is a relatively unresponsive blank screen. You never get in to the GUI. The problem likely occurs on all Sonys with model numbers starting in Z11 and Z13 and possibly more, making this a problem that applies to tens of thousands of notebooks. The following is the list of results I get when I try to go through the steps in the "Installation" mandatory testcase for "Nvidia Proprietary Drivers" using Natty Daily Live CD 20110328: 1. Boot stock system on compatible video hardware, using the appropriate open source driver (or -vesa). By default, Ubuntu boots with the open source driver. RESULT: No problems. 2. Note the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or simply note absence of the file) RESULT: The file is absent. 3. Go to System : Administration : Hardware Drivers 4. Verify that it correctly identifies that a video driver is available for this hardware RESULT: The system nominates "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version -current)" (as is expected/normal) 5. Install the recommended driver. RESULT: No problem. 6. Verify that a *.ko file is installed properly for the correct kernel(s) find /lib/modules/ -type f -ls -iname '*.ko' | grep -E "/nvidia-current.ko|/nvidia-173.ko|/nvidia-96.ko|/fglrx.ko" Check that the timestamp of the file is correct. RESULT: 133605 13248 -rw-r--r-- 1 rootroot13562440 Apr 2 21:31 /lib/modules/2.6.38-7-generic/updates/dkms/nvidia-current.ko 7. Note new contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It should list the name of the proprietary driver as a minimum. RESULTING CONTENTS OF xorg.conf: Section "Screen" Identifier"Default Screen" DefaultDepth24 EndSection Section "Module" Load"glx" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier"Default Device" Driver"nvidia" Option"NoLogo""True" EndSection 8. Reboot 9. Verify the GUI display comes up RESULT: FAILURE After Grub, there is a blank screen. This stays indefinitely. There is no Ubuntu splash screen. I have left it for half an hour or more and it just stays blank. After a long time, I tried pressing some keys, and got garbled text output in the very top left corner of the screen: e.g. "^[[B ^[[C" I can type letters but typing commands or trying to login does not work. I then pressed Ctrl-Alt-F2, and was able to login as a user to the tty terminal 10. Verify the proprietary driver loaded grep -E "LoadModule:.*\"nvidia|fglrx\"" /var/log/Xorg.0.log RESULT: [5.899] (II) LoadModule: “nvidia” So, it appears that the nvidia driver did in fact load. After this, I typed: ls -al /var/crash This showed an empty directory, i.e. no apport or crash files are there. I then typed: apport-cli xorg so that I could submit this bug accompanied by an apport file. I answered Yes to allow gdm log files to be included. I also got this output from the apport-cli command: cat: /var/log/gdm/:0.log.2: No such file or directory I can get the NVidia proprietary driver to work on Natty (20110328) if I install the following custom hacked kernels and boot from this: * linux-headers-2.6.28.10-vaioz_2.6.28.10-vaioz-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb * linux-image-2.6.28.10-vaioz_2.6.28.10-vaioz-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb You can read about this procedure and download the hacked kernels from: * http://www.adhocism.net/2010/11/installing-ubuntu-10-10-on-sony-vaio-vpc-z13m9eb/ * http://www.voip-x.co.uk/files/adam/IMPORTANT_README However this is a dirty hack, not a real fix. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 389519 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389519 I agree that it would be difficult to fix the mouse grab issue within X. I find that the only issue is when I click the mouse, so I don't click the mouse. I find the edge first, without the mouse clicked, then I click the mouse and move away from the edge. It would be nice to handle the action directly, but again, I don't think X provides any notification to the window when it is entered while the mouse is attached to another window (the clicked in window). Anyhow, I tweaked the code further. However, I left in 'modes' for those that want that behavior, but I changed the default (no mode specified) to block on all edges. I also fixed the need to specify a void that doesn't exactly match the offscreen size. It is still possible to sneak the mouse past the edge, but it is much less likely now, and the simply solution is to just drag the mouse horizontal or vertically (depending on the void orientation) and the mouse will come back (not actually stuck, just lost...). Making the void bigger in the negative space may help too (I didn't try it because I found it very difficult to lose the mouse anymore). I added a makefile, just type 'make' to build (or 'make debug' if you want more verbose output from the executable...). I think there is already a mouse capture project under SourceForge, and that may provide a more robust solution, but I stuck with XCreateMouseVoid because it is so small...and I'm providing my tweaks because it appears to work better on my machine now... ** Attachment added: "XCreateMouseVoid.tar.gz" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxrandr/+bug/373367/+attachment/1968593/+files/XCreateMouseVoid.tar.gz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libxrandr in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373367 Title: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU)
For me the situation in Natty got worse. On Maverick (and before) I couldn't get vsync to work properly when using Compiz, but when using Metacity vsync was fine. On Natty (beta) vsync doesn't work properly with both Compiz and Metacity. So right now on Natty, no matter which settings I use or what I do, I can't get full screen video to play without screen tearing. Using an Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT with the latest Nvidia drivers from the Ubuntu repos. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600178 Title: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660596] Re: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10
hi people, yesterday I received a new better machine from my Dad with this nvidia GeForce 8400 GS graphic card. I am just on installing LinuxMint 10 on it. Just after installing the reboot without having the propriatory driver installed works fine. But if I install this driver (current- version as recommended) then the display-resolution is way too big. But if I want to change that in nvidia-settings, I receive the message, that I sould edit my nvidia-xorg-conf as root and then restart my xserver. But if I open this document as root (as stated in this massage), then I only see an empty document on my screen. So my next question would be: how to edit this nvidia-xorg-conf? My Monitor is this model: Acer x193w 16:9 (widescreen) So what do I have to do, to get my screen-resolution fixed?? The resolution after installation of this nvidia-driver is way to big and looks horrible on my screen. So I really need help!!
