The root cause of this bug is the final removal of BKL from the Linux kernel: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.36.y.git;a=commitdiff;h=b19dd42faf413b4705d4adb38521e82d73fa4249 The change first appeared in kernel 2.6.36 and possibly later versions of ubuntu kernel 2.6.35. NVIDIA have implemented a fix in their later driver versions: Users of nvidia-96 need version 96.43.19 or later. Users of nvidia-current need version 260.19.06 or later. 260.19.06 really does seem to be the earliest instance of the fix I can find for nvidia-current. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 is buggy for NVidia GeForce FX series
I also have some problems, as others I have version 173 listed but not active and the recommended is activated but not in use. VGA card is 6200 Turbocache. If Firefox is running and I also open Thunderbird then T'birds opening page is fine but if I then go to the write page then I get a white screen but for the 3 screen icons in the top left hand corner. This does not happen if Firefox is not running, it has only started since upgrade to 11.04, also I had it set so that the screen, how to explain, went wobbly as it changed from min to max, now I cant set that up, silly thing but it's not right. The white screen thing also happens when say on Facebook I try to save an image the page goes to what should be a directory listing but instead shows the white screen as before. I have got the Unity app running as it was automatically installed for me when I upgraded to 11.04 Another thing I've noticed is that if I run Thunderbird first and then Firefox then I get the white screen as explained but by running the mouse cursor about in Google (my home page) I can find the search bar as the cursor changes to a flashing upright bar, so running blind if I click on that, type something and press enter the prog seems to be running but nothing appears, I know it's there though cos I can track where the text is with the mouse cursor. I'm a bit of a newbie so be gentle with me. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 758014] Re: ubuntu natty beta nvidia regression - maximize white hang
Hi, Same problem after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04, with a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 with shared memory. I suspect his might come from video memory usage. Here is the result of my (limited) experimentations: After having opened a few windows (full screen or not), I reach a point where the next opened window will be solid white. At this point, it is still possible for me to get the content of that window by reducing its display size, or that of another window. If I then switch to a previously opened (and correctly displayed) window, and make it a little bigger, it will get blank too. I can even find a treshold: below a certain window size, content shows; over it, it does not. I suspect there is something of a maximum total opened window area: when reached, any activated window will be plain white. I think it may be linked to video memory usage, because I've found that whenever I play Civilization IV over Wine, which uses much more video memory than a standard desktop app, the total showable window area seems much smaller. I hope this might help to correct that serious defect, as well as help those who experience it... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774938] Re: Erratic cursor movement when using Coordinate Transformation Matrix
Quick Update: I think I'm a bit confused about this -- from what I understand, the evdev SwapAxes option has been deprecated in favor of the coordinate transform matrix. I was interpreting to mean that in my xorg.conf.d script, I could still set the SwapAxes in my xorg.conf.d script, and the coordinate transformation matrix would be now be used under the hood. Below is what I was using: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-calibration.conf: Section InputClass Identifier calibration MatchProduct eGalax Option Calibration 76 1895 129 1852 Option SwapAxes 1 EndSection The above configuration is what still causes the erratic movement. However, I found that to setting SwapAxes to 0 and using xinput to set the devices coordinate transform matrix to [ 0 1 0; 1 0 0; 0 0 1] swapped the axes without the erratic movement, but definitely requires further calibration. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774938 Title: Erratic cursor movement when using Coordinate Transformation Matrix To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/774938/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

However, if I boot with the laptop undocked, log in, and then dock the laptop, it breaks pretty badly. Only one monitor is lit up, and I just get a black screen with a mouse pointer there -- no desktop background, windows, toolbars, or anything. Once it's in this state, it doesn't seem possible to recover -- if I undock the laptop again, the internal screen just stays black with a pointer. When the laptop is in a working state, undocking it sort of works... the desktop switches to the laptop screen, but then redocking it acts just like docking as described above. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505494] Re: Mouse events fail frequently and unpredictably, requiring kwin restart
By the way, I forgot to tell, that I encountered this bug on a fresh Natty 11.04 install with formated drive. Few second after loging in, the mouse events are not taken into account, leaving the focus where you clicked before the bug triggers. Then the mouse is like a cooling unit in the artic. It moves but click will not have any effect. kwin --replace will give an extra 5 sec of functionnality before going back to buggy state. if anyhow I want to logout/reboot/shutdown, X seems to hang for ever on a black screen. Then I ctrl+alt+F1 killall Xorg, and finally the Logout/reboot/shutdown go on and do what is expected. After that It seems like the bug is killed, though I just experienced too few to be sure of that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/505494 Title: Mouse events fail frequently and unpredictably, requiring kwin restart To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/505494/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
This is a serious issue that has affected a large number of users. In the total absence of any formal word from the Ubuntu developers, I personally am very interested to learn of other users' experiences. Furthermore, I would respectfully suggest that for new and inexperienced users, uncertain whether they should apply the upgrade or not, the experience of other people would be of great value in making an informed decision. I certainly do not consider users posting their findings conforms to any definition of spam of which I am aware. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 796677] [NEW] Huge compatibility issues with ATI Mobility Radeon 3450 HD and the OpenSource ATI Driver
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg (First, sorry for my bad English, I'm French...) Tested in Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04 (x86) and still the same problem. The problem occurs with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 and when I start Ubuntu with a LiveCD and with the nomodeset option added to the kernel (I add nomodeset because otherwise Ubuntu will not start at all, but that's another bug...). After pressing enter, the Ubuntu splash screen appears. And when the startup is complete, I hear the Ubuntu startup sound. But there is no output to the monitor. However, I can access TTY by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1. I just expect that xorg start and that something at least appears on the screen. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 560180] Re: [SRU] Wacom buttons cause mouse to move to upper left corner and click.
Can confirm broken in Natty : xf86-input-wacom : 0.10.11 I tried to apply the always relative patch manually to wcmXCommand.c and wcmValidateDevice.c, but the second file seems to have changed. I've changed line 516 and following as such, which seems equivalent: if (IsPad(priv)) { priv-wheelup = 4; priv-wheeldn = 5; /* set_absolute(pInfo, TRUE); */ set_absolute(pInfo, FALSE); } The pad still starts in absolute mode, though it can be set to Relative with XSetWacom. After that it can't be set back to absolute, which is expected. However, the problem still persists even when xsetwacom reports the pad as being in relative mode, so I'm guessing the above is not quite right .. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764700] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in utouch_frame_sync()
Turns out I can more or less reliably reproduce a crash by frantically moving my pen along the tablet for about a minute or two. That allowed me to attach gdb and get a backtrace (attached). It seems that I get a different backtrace at different times. For simplicity, I will assume it is all related to the same bug. So I will post here. It is important to say that I downgraded to libutouch- grail1=1.0.20-0ubuntu4 because that's the version that has debugging symbols in ddebs.ubuntu.com. ** Attachment added: backtrace xorg https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/764700/+attachment/2167694/+files/backtrace%20xorg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/764700 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in utouch_frame_sync() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/764700/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 751047] Re: Screen flickers at random times with nvidia 270.30
Hi, I'm having the same problem as well. Ubuntu 11.04 on amd64, with NVIDIA GT 435M Optimus card, and the problem still persists with 270.41.06 installed. Flickering occurs at odd moments such as changing the screen brightness, or clicking GUI controls. Oddly, using nvidia- settings to change the resolution to some lower resolution and then changing it back seems to completely stop the flickering, for the current session at least. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/751047 Title: Screen flickers at random times with nvidia 270.30 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/751047/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 742517] Re: [sandy bridge] xorg freezes with 100% cpu usage
Hi bugbot, to step in for Rechner-Tester. I have the problem of random hang-ups, too. And yes, it still exists. I'm running a i7 2680 with Intel HD 3000 Graphics T420. Problems with this GPU are reported for all linux distributions, e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1728526page=2 or fedora: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=680037 I tried Fedora 15- same problem. I also get random crashes when suspending the machine and sometimes just while working. This is certainly not fixed and it puts some pressure on me to switch back to Windows. Now that I bought the stupid new machinefor more than $2000 and it crashes all the time and makes me loose my work I have to consider this. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 780961] Re: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) when using keyboard-based window management
Hi, this bug drives me crazy as well. Although I am running fedora 15 but not ubuntu (with a similar kernel though 2.6.38.7-30.fc15.x86_64). It crashes randomly just as Selene discribes. I am working on a Thinkpad X201s with dual monitor setup. Attached is the Xorg log file. I hope someone could fix this issue. I am about to downgrade to an old fedora version where this bug never happened. I also noticed that switching desktops somewhat increases the frequency of the crash (so I am only working on the external monitor right now). However, it also occurred to me twice, when I had apparently touched nothing at all. ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log.old https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/780961/+attachment/2167960/+files/Xorg.0.log.old -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780961 Title: Natty Xorg crashes on Thinkpad X201 (i915 driver) when using keyboard- based window management To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/780961/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
