[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 854329] Re: race condition on shutdown with more than one DM installed
This bug was fixed in the package plymouth - 0.8.2-2ubuntu27 --- plymouth (0.8.2-2ubuntu27) oneiric; urgency=low * debian/plymouth.upstart: don't start up on 'stopped gdm' or 'stopped lightdm' since on upgrade one of these two will always be stopped at system boot. Instead look for a 'desktop-shutdown' event, and declare appropriate Breaks: against earlier versions of gdm, lightdm, kdm and lxdm that don't implement this event. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
I manually installed the latest nvidia driver from their site and got an error that the kernel module was mismatched with the nvidia driver version. My display manger wouldn't even start until I purged and reinstalled the problematic version of nvidia again. See http://askubuntu.com/questions/37590/nvidia-drivers-not-working-after- upgrade-why-can-i-only-see-terminal. I don't know how you guys are doing it without all sorts of complications arising. It broke my system and now I am back to the offending version again. Now I'm scared to resize windows. This bug has been up for 5 months. Why hasn't the new driver been officially passed through to the official repositories? Doing unofficial things break your system. Especially if you are not an expert and there is a lack of official guidance on issues like this. I have to trawl through forums and I don't feel comfortable having to perform changes that could break my system. I don't mind Debian being like this because they don't have any pretenses of being user friendly, but I expected more from Kubuntu. :( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760632 Title: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/760632/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 859455] [NEW] Touchpad random breakage
Public bug reported: The touchpad on my Dell XPS 1530 keeps breaking. This happens on a random basis at least two times a day. By breaking, I mean that the touchpad suddenly stops working; I am unable to move the mouse cursor with the touchpad. However, if I plug in an external USB mouse, the cursor can be moved and used as normal. If I then unplug the mouse, the touchpad is still broken. I can get the touchpad working again by logging out and then logging back in. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 859628] [NEW] [gm45] False GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x01800020
Public bug reported: I plugged my reciever (which my TV is also connected to) to my laptop through the HDMI port and it worked fine. When I plugget my monitor to my laptop through the VGA port, the laptops own screen went off and the external monitor started to show a distorted image of my desktop (that I could interact with, but I couldn't see what I was interacting with). I had to switch to a console to kill Xorg and reboot, since I got an error that the gnome session couldn't be started. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk
I debugged this on a machine of an affected user, but on natty. The nvidia handler calls this code to check whether the driver is in use: return KernelModuleHandler.module_loaded(self._module_alias) and \ self._alternatives.resolve_module_alias(self._module_alias) == self.module and \ (self.package is None or OSLib.inst.package_installed(self.package)) where self._module_alias == nvidia self.module == nvidia_current module_loaded() returns True (correctly) self.package == nvidia-current package_installed() returns True (correctly) so the thing that fails here is self._alternatives.resolve_module_alias(self._module_alias), which returns None. Seems this is a bug in nvidia-common then, reassigning and handing over to Alberto. This might well be fixed in oneiric, so it would still be nice if someone could test this on current oneiric. Thanks! ** Package changed: jockey (Ubuntu) = nvidia-common (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: nvidia-common (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed ** Changed in: nvidia-common (Ubuntu) Assignee: Martin Pitt (pitti) = Alberto Milone (albertomilone) ** Changed in: jockey Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/771788 Title: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/jockey/+bug/771788/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On 09/26/2011 09:10 AM, Seth Forshee wrote: Sorry, I really have no idea. If I had to guess I'd say it sounds like something in the Gnome settings has become messed up somehow, but I don't know what to tell you to look for. It doesn't sound like the problem is an the driver or Xserver level though, since both the display manager and KDE can use the touchpad just fine. Hi Seth, I'd been considering switching to KDE anyway and after using it for the past few days am getting used to it. It's really nice having two-fingered scrolling. Here are the things I've noticed about the driver: * I occasionally get a stray palm press while typing, which switches the focus or moves my cursor. The problem isn't nearly as bad as it was before your driver. Previously, I used the patch from comments #307 and #154 to disable tap-to-click and retain my sanity. Eliminating all stray palm presses is my only real request about the driver. * Two-fingered tap to right-click works, but is very difficult to get right. I have to try several times to get a contextual menu to appear, but then other times I accidentally invoke it. For now, I've disabled this. I can never get it to detect a three-fingered tap. Neither of these are big deals for me. * I just now mastered tapping the corner to right click (for me it's set to bottom right corner). I have to tap and lift immediately. Still, a little tricky to get right (tap and lift seems to help with two fingered tap too). * When I hold my finger to the touchpad, the pointer quivers slightly. I believe you mentioned that this behavior would be improved in Oneric (I'm using Natty). * Horizontal scrolling with two fingers works. Single fingered scrolling on the bottom edge invokes vertical scrolling however (left = down, right = up). Strange, but not a big deal since two fingered horizontal scrolling works. * I thing Horizontal circular scrolling is working: if I start at any edge and move at an angle, I get vertical scrolling. * I can't seem to get Continue edge scrolling automatically to work (e.g. I have Continue edge scrolling, while the finger stays in an edge corner checked but that doesn't happen, but I'm not confident I'm doing it right). * Continue cursor motion when hitting the touchpad edge works just fine. Thanks so much for working on this. It was depressing to have this fancy touchpad and have to use it with such limited functionality. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you in your debugging efforts. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
David: Thanks for testing! Almost everything you've mentioned is a desktop issue more than a driver issue. The driver mostly just passes the raw data from the touchpad up to the desktop, and the desktop translates this data into motion or scrolling or tapping. Specifically, I think most of the things you mention are features of the Xorg synaptics module. So they aren't issues with the driver, and as such they're really topics for separate bug reports. I have addressed a couple of specific points in the comments below. * Two-fingered tap to right-click works, but is very difficult to get right. I have to try several times to get a contextual menu to appear, but then other times I accidentally invoke it. For now, I've disabled this. I can never get it to detect a three-fingered tap. Neither of these are big deals for me. As I understand it, becuase this has limited multitouch capabilities the Xorg synaptics module doesn't support three-finger taps. I've been told that it might be possible to special-case the driver to support it for specific touchpads, but I haven't investigated. * When I hold my finger to the touchpad, the pointer quivers slightly. I believe you mentioned that this behavior would be improved in Oneric (I'm using Natty). Yes, this just reflects that the data from the touchpad is jittery. The version of the synaptics module in oneiric adds some filtering that I've seen eliminates this with some touchpads, although I haven't verified this with ALPS speicifically. I'm not seeing such jitter with ALPS touchpads under oneiric. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/550625 Title: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/550625/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Public bug reported: I'm not an experienced linux user, I've had this computer for four years and make the best of it in the hope i will make myself learn linux a little at a time. my computer ran an upgrade and then asked me to send this error report. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
One more observation. When using the driver my glidepoint (DualPoint Stick) lacks sensitivity. It's perfectly sensitive without the driver. When moving at longer distances the mouse cursor behaves pretty much the same way like before - it seems it's less sensitive, but it does not actually matter. On short distances, under mild pressure of the finger, the cursor jumps over too many pixels - which is annoying. Lost sensitivity can't be fixed by changing Pointer acceleration or Pointer threshold in mouse preferences. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 852873] Re: GLX is broken for several commercial OpenGL games
This bug was reported a week ago and is unassigned and has undecided importance. I can't decide the importance for Ubuntu, but I can tell you the importance for me: show-stopper. I can't prove it is the same bug, but at the same time as all these games failed due to an error using OpenGL, all of my WINE games broke too. World of Warcraft, StarCraft 2, Portal. Booting with Ubuntu 10.04, using the same WINE version, and the same program directories, they work perfectly. I'm using the free version of WoW, so Ubuntu testers can try it out themselves. I suspect it is the same error because this is the first line of the errors produced starting WoW: steven@galactica:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/World of Warcraft$ wine Wow.exe err:wgl:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo couldn't initialize OpenGL, expect problems Gaming is far from the only thing I do, but this bug affects a more than just a handful of indie games (the ones listed just happen to be from the Humble Indie Bundle). Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
Speaking to the jitter, I haven't looked into it but a couple of possiblities come to mind. First, the new driver changes the way the data is reported, and perhaps the data is higher resolution and more sensitive. It was also using different code on the X server side of things, so something in there could have an effect as well. Also, one more question. Except for jitter, things work fine for me on E6410, except that tap settings are reset after resume. Is this something that driver is responsible for, or it's up for userland to reset those settings? What tap settings are you referring to? If they're properties of the Xorg Synaptics TouchPad device or something found in the mouse pereferences, those are userland and don't involve the driver at all.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 859934] [NEW] screen corruption and system freeze during boot
Public bug reported: I upgraded to 11.10 yesterday, and after the upgrade was done and I restarted, the screen froze during boot. I rebooted again, and was presented with grub, I chose the recovery mode and it booted normally, but (needless to say), no 3D (hence no Unity). I'm running the open source ati drivers. I then installed the proprietry driver (fglrx), and the system booted normally. I then uninstalled fglrx and reinstalled the open source drivers again, using instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem :__Need_to_fully_remove_-fglrx_and_reinstall_-ati_from_scratch sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it exists) sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx* sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg After rebooting, the freezing problem occurs again. A few days ago, I ran 11.10 from a live USB on this same machine, and it booted without any problem. In fact I've been doing this for a while now. I'm pretty sure it was running Unity 3D. For one thing, the dash blurring was active blur, meaning I could play a video and see it blurred behind the dash. Slightly offtopic, but it might be worth mentioning that even when I installed fglrx, Unity still didn't run, because 'GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported' Also, for what it's worth, the open source radeon driver has been working fine for me since before 11.04, and I had no problem running Unity on it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
Your v6 patch mostly works for me (3.1.0_rc7). What I am having trouble with is this comment in the code: /* * Bits in the upper nibble of byte 3 represent the trackstick * buttons on some models, but on other models the trackstick * buttons are reported in the trackstic packets. If we try to * report the buttons on the trackstick device from here it can * lead to conflicts, so we treat any buttons reported in the * touchpad packets as belonging to the touchpad. */ I have such laptop that reports button events in touchpad packets (Dell E6420), and your approach causes two problems with my usage pattern: 1) ever since I got this computer, I've been dreaming about disabling that infernal device (touchpad) and use only the trackstick. With current code, I loose buttons. 2) even if I decide to live with touchpad enabled (your driver + syndaemon make it much more bearable) it breaks mouse wheel emulation with middle button. In Xorg, trackstick device is handled by evdev, touchpad by synaptic_drv. Only evdev knows how to do the wheel emulation, AFAIK, but it doesn't get the button events. I have put together a small patch, here: https://github.com/huancz/linux/commit/34fa799dee824b44c79b0b7641f14944dffadef7.patch So far it works OK on my computer, and the autodetection should probably work on all ALPS devices, but I lack the hardware to test it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 854206] Re: no desktop login, just console. xorg Matrox MGA driver fails to initialize
I've attached an archive of all of the logs that I reference in this post. It includes the dmesg and Xorg log output for the 11.04 install. See dmesg-11.04 and Xorg-11.04.0.log. I have not successfully reproduced the working 10.10 system. I booted from the 10.10 live CD and got the expected spash screen with the progress dots and ultimately the Install-or-try-ubuntu screen. This seemed promising. But when I clicked Try Ubuntu, I got dumped to the console on tty1. The logs look similar to the 11.04 install. See dmesg-10.10 and Xorg-10.10.0.log. For the record, I get this exact same behavior, including the splash screens, when I boot the 11.04 live CD. Next I booted the 10.04.3 live CD. I got all the way to the Try Ubuntu desktop. So perhaps we should use this as the working baseline. See dmesg-10.04.3 and Xorg-10.04.3.0.log. Finally, I tried 11.10 as you advised. Specifically, I tried oneiric- desktop-amd64.iso from 26-Sep-2011. I got an error: The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again. When I click OK, I get dumped to the tty7 console with the output from the various boot scripts. Notably, Starting restore sound card(s') mixer state(s) reports FAIL, and (perhaps more relevant) Starting load fallback graphics devices also reports FAIL. See the dmesg and Xorg.log output in the attached archive. I tried apport-collect as you advised, and it dumped me into Lynx. After I logged in to launchpad, however, nothing happened. Quitting Lynx left me with a screen indicating that apport-collect was waiting to hear back from launch pad. ** Attachment added: mga-bug-logs.tar.gz https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-mga/+bug/854206/+attachment/2465684/+files/mga-bug-logs.tar.gz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-mga in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/854206 Title: no desktop login, just console. xorg Matrox MGA driver fails to initialize To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-mga/+bug/854206/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I'll do some diagnostics and report back. ** Tags added: oneiric ** Tags added: rls-mgr-o-tracking -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/737891 Title: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/737891/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work
I've posted a new version with just a few changes for debugging problems that have been reported, available at: http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/alps-touchpad/psmouse-alps-0.7 /psmouse-alps-dkms_0.7_all.deb Anyone whose machine has a trackstick, please check that the mouse buttons just below the keyboard (above the tochpad) are working and let me know if they do not. Especially anyone using a Dell Latitude E6510. Hemanti: For your stray click problem I added in optional packet dumping, disabled by default. To enable it on your machine, run the command: echo options psmouse alps_dump_packets=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf Then install the 0.7 package, and finally unload and reload the psmouse module. The next time you see a stray click after this, stop using the touchpad *immediately*, switch to a virtual terminal (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1), and run 'dmesg dmesg-stray-click.txt'. Then you can switch back to your desktop using Ctrl-Alt-F7, and dmesg-stray-click.txt here. To stop logging the packets you can remove the /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf file. Petr: I actually only have one report of the trackstick buttons being reported in the trackstick packet, but the hardware was no longer in the possession of the reporter. So in this build I've removed the reporting of buttons from the trackstick packet and am only looking in the touchpad packets, reporting them on the trackstick device. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 859934] Re: screen corruption and system freeze during boot
A few notes: - The above logs are from when I booted with the 'recovery mode' option from the grub menu, so I don't know if the logs are even useful at all .. - I created a live-usb (from the test-drive tool, so it should be the latest version) and booted it, it booted normally, though I did see some screen corruption during boot, but it wasn't fatal; that is, the booting process continued normally. I got an error box saying that something went wrong during installation, and that I'm going to be redirected to the desktop. I don't know what installation it's talking about, but it takes me to the live-usb desktop after I hit ok. Perhaps I can let the system boot normally and fail, and then boot from the live-usb so I can provide better logs. The only thing is, I don't know which log files are relevant .. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/859934 Title: screen corruption and system freeze during boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/859934/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 849782] Re: Screen jitters every so often, especially when laptop under load
jml, yeah would be nice to have a clearer video, but I gather that it's a momentary micro-second event? I didn't see it move up and down but there was a notable glitch around the 9-10 sec mark? I notice your logs have a lot of data in it, and I wonder if any of it correlates to the glitch. Can you please try running 'tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log' in one window, and in another window something like while : ; do clear; dmesg | tail -n 20 ; sleep 1 ; done, do whatever is necessary to get the issue to reproduce, and see if anything prints to either log simultaneous with the glitch. If Chris is correct that it's output polling, you should also turn on kms debugging. Run 'sudo xdiagnose' and tick the first checkbox, then apply and reboot. Use the same while loop as above to monitor dmesg output while reproducing the problem to confirm polling activity associated with the glitch. Let us know the result in any case. I notice you have an unusual number xkb cache messages showing up, which looks curious. Probably unrelated though. Also, can you estimate when you first noticed this behavior? Was it not happening on a prior ubuntu release, or earlier on in oneiric? ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/849782 Title: Screen jitters every so often, especially when laptop under load To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/849782/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
