[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990552] Re: gnome-shell crash: segfault at 50 ip 00007f2bd6028b05 sp 00007fffbb999068 error 4 in libcogl.so.9.1.0

2012-05-04 Thread JulioHM
I have just confirmed this is the same problem discussed

here...
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966002page=2

and here...
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/194996

I found the exact same crash from Compiz on /var/log/syslog.

May 4 02:16:06 juliohmnote kernel: [ 659.671328] compiz[11423]:
segfault at 7f34b4c7c400 ip 7f34e4eeb7e5 sp 7fff2ea202c8 error 4
in libc-2.15.so[7f34e4e5a000+1b3000]

So, this is not a gnome-sheel problem after all. Turns out, the current
NVIDA driver (version 295.49) which is shipped with Precise has a known
bug that needs to be fixed in the next releases. In the meantime, it is
possible to downgrade to version 295.33 and use the driver without
reproducing this particular problem.

To downgrade:

# Uninstall the current nvidia driver
sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current

# Download the previous version of this driver
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/295.33/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.33.run

# Switch to tty1 (CTRL+ALT+F1)
# This needs to be done without lightdm running
sudo stop lightdm

# Make sure you have build-essential installed and the current linux headers
# The installation will try to build and install kernel modules
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.33.run

# Restart lightdm
sudo start lightdm

Enjoy Unity with visual effects.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 949097] Re: Serial Wacom Tablet touch not in absolute mode when logged in

2012-05-04 Thread Tomas
Hmm, that's odd. The scripts is being executed (after I removed the stuff you
accidentally placed after #!/bin/bash). I tested it by replacing the xsetwacom
part with mkdir /home/tomas/itsworking.
I know little about Linux, but I guess it could be that, for example, (i) the
problem is somewhere in the code that is being executed after your scripts or
(ii) the script is being executed before the Wacom stuff is initialised, i.e.
xsetwacom is not properly recognised.
I'll see if I can come up with a working workaround. Will let you know if I
find something.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-04 Thread Matt
#99 @Shaman
Neither the 295.49 nor the beta 302.07 Nvidia drivers worked for me. If
anything they made things worse. That leaves me without a decent solution for
my desktop now that cairo-dock insists on 3d acceleration. (Surely you don't
expect me to use Unity?) I am seriously considering another distro
unfortunately, though I suppose anything that tries to use compiz will be
useless.

I'd love to regress to the 295.33 drivers, but that doesn't support the
latest cuda. So this is really a conundrum

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-04 Thread Wal
I still have the 295.33 driver installed and they have been working for
the last4 days now since I insalled them without any problems.

I do note from post #101 and a couple of others that an updated driver
(295.49) is now availale after the troublesome 295.40 driver.

Can anyone confirm whether the 295.49 drivers are actually working
properly when they are installed.

2012-05-04 Thread Matt
#103 @Wal Did you see the post right before yours? Neither the 295.49
nor the 307.07 drivers fix the unity 3d /compiz errors for my card (280
GTX). It seems I personally can run gnome (3D) however.

If the problem is solely confined to unity and compiz, maybe it's not
the end of the world. It's not like that interface is that useful,
though I do like compiz. I wonder if kde will work? Is it worth the
hard drive space?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-04 Thread Wal
Hi Matt, Yes I did read your previous post. Did you try and install the
new driver after you done a fresh install or did you try to install to
install it on a system you had already tinkered with and changed the
settings.

I have found from previous experience that it is better to try the new
driver after you have done a fesh install of your system as everything
is back to the way it should be to except the driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-04 Thread Manu Kemppainen
For me updating the driver with NVidia .run file does not work.
If I remove all nvidia drivers first, the system uses nouveau after I execute
the .run file.
If I keep the 295.33 driver and execute the .run file, the kernel module stays
in 295.33 version.
I also tried to create /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf file wit the content

blacklist nouveau

but no luck yet. I am still using the 295.33, which I can install from
the .deb file.

Thanks Peter! I did't get notification of your updates to this bug but just
upgraded to 12.04 LTS and can confirm that the trackpad is successfully

Plus I noticed I can click-and-hold with one finger while sliding another
finger for click-and-drag functionality just like in OS X. We've come a long

regularly on my laptop. About every 30-60 minutes. Super-SysRq-k usually

This problem has appeared for me unregarding of what programs i am
using. Once even having all programs closed when i was about to shutdown
my laptop. I usually have my laptop plugged in, i rarely work on battery

FYI, Nicolas' suggestion #7 and #8 worked perfectly for me.

After downgrade of Xorg and reboot, no X was configured. I dLogged into

After reboot all was perfectly OK with graphics. My WLAN network cards
didn't initialise on first reboot, but was fine on second reboot --
probably totally unrelated.

The lockup is just confirmation it died. However it doesn't say why. Can
you post the result of running the command 'dmesg' after the lockup?

Can you get a dmesg blindly after a freeze? From what I can tell in the
Xorg log the card froze, which likely means there's more information in
the kernel log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-04 Thread Shaman
I didn't check the latest current driver (295.49) but 302.07beta works fine for
me.
I use Ubuntu 11.04 gnome2.32+compiz. 3D effects and everything else works well.
Unity works, too.
My steps:
1. apt-get update
2. Unload all gfx drivers from Hardware Drivers window (proprietary drivers
window).
3. apt-get remove nvidia-current nvidia-common
4. chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run
5. CTRL+ALT+F2
6. gdm stop
(or lightdm or kdm)
7. ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run
8. gdm start
(or lightdm or kdm)
9. Done

I will do the same with 295.49 if this drivers will works for others.

Installing 295.49 or 302.07 don't solve my problem. X session freezes
after about minute. My hardware is iMac and GeForce 8800 GS.

I also installed OpenSUSE 12.1 (KDE) to the same machine that works
with nouveau driver, but installing NVIDIA driver resulting same problem
that I have with Ubuntu 12.04. Also Ubuntu works with nouveau driver.

I am able to make ssh connection to both systems after freezing. I think
that udevc was defunct in process list.

2012-05-04 Thread Manfred Hampl
There is some discussion in the Nvidia forum at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179489
Quote from #15 We're working on new ABI support for legacy branches right now;
we're very sorry for the delays, we've been very busy with other stuff.
So there is still hope that updated drivers will be made available by Nvidia.

For the time being, In my opinion it would have been necessary to put a warning
into the release notes of Ubuntu 12.04.

I've got a slow computer and during the upgrade I by chance even saw the text
removing nvidia-96 scrolling by, but at that moment it was already far too
late to think about staying on Oneiric.

And oh I am on GeForce GT230. Just some additional info: The 3D unity
loads fine as long as i don't do anything slightly cpu intensive (like
loading a html5 video in firefox 12) and the gpu crashes and logs me off
(not shutdown but just log off). But 2D unity seems to work just fine in
the new driver. I have decided to stick with the old driver while this

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 983146] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2+] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0xd208b6d0

2012-05-04 Thread Jose Blanca
I've been using 3.4rc5 for a couple of days and I've experienced no X
hangs, but today I just had another screen corruption. I will continue
to use 3.4rc5 for some days before deciding if this bug is solved
upstream.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994714] [NEW] [drm] nouveau: Unexpected pageflip in channel 3.

2012-05-04 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Public bug reported:

This happened after about 30 minutes of watching a flash video in
fullscreen (using Firefox): the video froze, leaving just the audio
playing, and the display no longer responded to user input until I ssh'd
in and killed gnome-session for the user (after which LightDM login came
up and things worked again).

According to user this freezing has been occurring daily, sometimes
multiple times a day, since upgrading to Precise. It never occurred with
Lucid.

We've yet to try if using 2D desktop or disabling KMS helps.

(Apport wouldn't send this report without me lying to it that I was
referred here by tech support, but I wasn't.)

Bug #994203 looks similar, but it's about NV4e whereas this is an NV4c.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994585] [NEW] Keyboard/Mouse erratically broken when switching between vmware-player VM and Unity Desktop

2012-05-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Sometimes when switching from a vmware-player VM to Unity desktop, the
keyboard key repeat and Ctrl+c/Ctrl+v stops working. At the same time,
the mouse gets incredibly slow, to a point it becomes unusable. Looking
at g-c-c keyboard/mouse, settings/sliders are at usual places. Just
touching these settings/sliders slightly is enough to reload usable
settings.

I can see this behavior in many install of VMware-player 4 series, during PP
and now OO cycle.
I'm currently using VMware Player 4.0.2 build-591240 on fresh installs of PP.

Regards,
Effenberg

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993907] Re: [nvidia GT 240] no desktop after X started

2012-05-04 Thread Shreepad S
Hi

Could you please clarify
a. Which build to use, Ubuntu 12.04 LiveCD (64-bit Desktop)?
b. Just write ISO to usb via usb-creator default settings (currently running in
Lucid 10.04.4)? Not too sure what you mean by 'with persistence'...
c. Once I reproduce the bug I don't have a way to do a controlled shutdown,
have to do a hard reset, will that affect anything further?
d. Do I have to physically remove the NVidia card or is it sufficient to
disable in BIOS as before (i.e. set BIOS to use onboard Intel GMA graphics)?
Will this affect the outcome?
e. When you say boot a live session connected I assume you mean just boot
from USB live session with internet connected?

Thanks!
Shreepad

Hello
Can you please, from an usb key with persistence (let usb-creator as  default
settings), freshly created, boot with the nvidia card, reproduce the bug,
shutdown, remove the nvidia card, boot a live session connected and run in a
terminal
apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 993907
or if not working try
apport-collect 993907
Thanks

Title:
[nvidia GT 240] no desktop after X started

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi

  Tried to run, in order
  - Ubuntu 12.04 LiveDVD (64-bit Desktop): Burnt to DVD and booted from disk
  - Ubuntu 12.04 LiveCD (64-bit Desktop): Written to USB stick via usb-creator
and booted from USB
  - Xubuntu 12.04 LiveCD (64-bit Desktop): Written to USB stick via usb-creator
and booted from USB

In each case, got the same behaviour
  - System would boot from the disk/ USB
  - Would be presented with the splah/ progress screen (the one with the dots
on plain background for Ubuntu and bouncing progress bar with background image
for Xubuntu)
  - After that screen would fill up with coloured noise, random black/ coloured
pixels all over the screen
  - Unable to do anything other than a hard reboot

This was with using an old NVidia GT 240 card (which works fine with Lucid
10.04.4 64-bit Desktop). Complete system specs:
  - Intel C2D E7200 || Intel DG33FB mobo || 4 GB RAM || 64 bit Lucid Desktop ||
WD Caviar Black 1TB, Green 2TB
  - Palit Sonic GT 240 (OC'd NVidia card) || Dell U2412M Monitor || Logitech
Quickcam Connect || Acer 3300U Scanner

Next I went into BIOS and forced it to use the onboard Intel graphics
(Intel DG33FB board with Intel GMA 3100 graphics) and Xubuntu booted
up fine and got into the desktop with no problems. Launched a few apps
  and all seems fine.

Based on my advanced analytical skills (!) I conclude there is a
problem with the graphics driver on the LiveCD/DVD in Ubuntu/Xubuntu.

After reading the duplicate candidate, I do not believe this is the same

As far as I know this bug is specific to 3.x kernels, and is not related
to a symlink problem but rather a compile problem resulting from a

Also, after reading the relevant code, I believe it would not affect

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-05-04 Thread Dave Stroud
There is some discussion in the Nvidia forum at
 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=179489
Quote from #15 We're working on new ABI support for legacy branches right
now; we're very sorry for the delays, we've been very busy with other
 stuff.
So there is still hope that updated drivers will be made available by
 Nvidia.

For the time being, In my opinion it would have been necessary to put a
warning into the release notes of Ubuntu 12.04.

I've got a slow computer and during the upgrade I by chance even saw the
text removing nvidia-96 scrolling by, but at that moment it was already
far too late to think about staying on Oneiric.

I noticed on the nvidia drivers page that they released some updates on
may 2. I tried the one for 96 but it would not install. Maybe there is
hope.

Whatever. I'm going back to windows. Windows 8 beta is more stable
and more attractive than Ubuntu. Microsoft wins again LOL!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993907] Re: [nvidia GT 240] no desktop after X started

2012-05-04 Thread Shreepad S
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 ubuntu

** Description changed:

  - Intel C2D E7200 || Intel DG33FB mobo || 4 GB RAM || 64 bit Lucid Desktop ||
WD Caviar Black 1TB, Green 2TB
  - Palit Sonic GT 240 (OC'd NVidia card) || Dell U2412M Monitor || Logitech
Quickcam Connect || Acer 3300U Scanner

Next I went into BIOS and forced it to use the onboard Intel graphics
(Intel DG33FB board with Intel GMA 3100 graphics) and Xubuntu booted up
fine and got into the desktop with no problems. Launched a few apps and
  all seems fine.

Based on my advanced analytical skills (!) I conclude there is a problem
with the graphics driver on the LiveCD/DVD in Ubuntu/Xubuntu.
