[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-06 Thread Andrzej
Not sure if that's a related problem (can't really afford reading all
276 comments).

My Ubuntu 12.04 also freezes (completely, the cursor doesn't move). It
only happens when running the system on battery. Always within several
minutes from booting/switching of the AC adapter. On AC, it works just
fine for days, without any freezes.

My config: Sony F-series laptop, i5 CPU, Nvidia graphics + Nouveau
drivers. Xfce 4.10 desktop. System upgraded from 11.04 and 11.10 (I
started seeing these freezes a couple of months ago, whilst still on
11.10).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 989347] Re: [BUG: ../../dix/getevents.c:850 in scale_to_desktop()] black screen if second monitor is connected in HDMI.

2012-06-06 Thread Andrzej
Same here, nvidia card+nouveau driver.

I can reproduce the error with:

xrandr --output VGA-1 --above LVDS-1
most other xrandr commands work.
(I have HDMI port here but it is not used at the moment, only laptop screen +
external VGA)

xrandr hangs, I can still ssh into the machine. I'm using Xfce 4.10.

I remember spuriously seeing similar behavior (black screen) in Ubuntu
11.10 but it was going away after reboot. So far, in 12.04 it happens
consistently.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1001842] Re: No Audio from HDMI After Switching Monitor Off / On

2012-06-06 Thread Joe H.
Well this sucks for those of us with a not too old HD 4000 series card
as 12.6 is not compatible. I'm going to try going through older drivers.
Perhaps this was a regression in ATI drivers and not present in one of
the older versions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-06 Thread Steve Riley
There are muliple RC6 modes. From "modinfo i915":

+
| parm: i915_enable_rc6:Enable power-saving render C-state 6.
Different stages
| can be selected via bitmask values (0 = disable; 1 = enable rc6; 2 = enable
deep rc6;
| 4 = enable deepest rc6). For example, 3 would enable rc6 and deep rc6, and 7
would
| enable everything. default: -1 (use per-chip default) (int)
+

Your log shows:

+
| [drm:intel_enable_rc6], Sandybridge: deep RC6 disabled
| [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
+

The kernel is automatically enabling the basic RC6 mode ("RC6 on") but
not the deep or deepest modes ("RC6p off, RC6pp off"). My suggested boot
parameter will override this, and disable all RC6 modes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 975175] Re: 1366x768 over VGA generic problems

2012-06-06 Thread Robert G. Jakabosky
I found a work-around that makes xorg recognize the 1366x768 resolution:

Add this line to your "Device" section in xorg.conf:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoWidthAlignmentCheck, NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"

Credit for this goes to this blog post:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-06 Thread Steve Riley
@pureblood: I wish I could answer your questions, but alas, I cannot. I
can report that I enjoyed no crashes today. Two full days of no crashing
is a welcome relief. But like many folks chiming in here, I am at a loss
to understand the causes of these crashes, so I can't explain why 3.4.1
appears to be working well for me.

I didn't know about the "drm.debug" option, so thanks for posting that,
I might return to an earlier kernel, add the parameter, and see what my
log produces. But from what I can tell by your log, nothing hang-related
shows up: the last few lines appear regularly throught.

An idea just occurred to me, and I'll mention it here for folks willing
to experiment. Recent kernels are by default enabling RC6 power saving
for Intel graphics. When first introduced, there were numerous reports
of various sorts of problems. I see by looking at your log, RC6 is
enabled. It might be worth disabling that function to see if makes the
problem go away; do that with the boot parameter
"i915.i915_enable_rc6=0".

At this point, I feel like many of us are in guess-something-and-see-if-
it-sticks mode. So in that vein, the truly adventuresome here might want
to give the 3.5-rc1 kernel a try!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763422] Re: [i965] idle black screen plus other issues Ubuntu 11.04

2012-06-06 Thread Carl Farrington
It's just happened again.

I have some more info though.

The text-input box, or rather, the cursor-changing behaviour - it's not the
gnome-screensaver unlock box. It's actually my desktop.
So as I move the mouse cursor across the black screen, the cursor is changing
to a hand as it moves across web hyperlinks, and it's changing to a text-input
cursor as it moves over text boxes, and a normal pointer the rest of the time.
I went to a tty and killed the gnome-screensaver process, and this didn't
change anything.

it seems like when X should be calling up the gnome-screensaver as it
comes out of sleep, it isn't doing, or it's not letting the gnome-
screensaver take over like it should.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1005321] Re: Several pointing device related problems occur when a touchscreen is installed

2012-06-06 Thread Marcelo
A correction: despite what I said at the end of the report, the problems
mentioned in items 1 to 1 in the beginning of the bug report do not occur
before running xinput. All problems occur only after the coordinate
transformation matrix is modified.
There are bugs reported in freedesktop.org's bugzilla about the mouse and
touchscreen erratic behaviors when a coordinate transformation matrix is
modified with xinput:

The mute button is sending a core button 1 down event.
This is also sent on uncapturing the audio input through alsa.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-06 Thread Kevin LeBlanc
@Michael (starkpc) #270:

I tried that using Linux Mint 13 (based off Ubuntu) and it still froze
three times in one day. I followed the tutorial in quidsup's video on
YouTube after goofing up PCLinuxOS. After the last time LM13 froze, I
decided, for compatibility's sake, to try LMDE instead of going back to
PCLinuxOS.

I should also re-mention that this is also happening to non-Sandy Bridge
users, which I am one. I'm really, really unimpressed by how
Canonical's bug-fix squad is not handling this. This is enough to drive
people back to Windows, which I've actually been considering.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 610206] Re: Build in input drivers for speed

2012-06-06 Thread Timo Aaltonen
the x-team discussed this idea today, and came to the conclusion to
close the bug as wontfix. Building any driver inside the xserver makes
it harder to update them, and it might also break input-hotplug, which
is not needed for embedded devices.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999109] Re: complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time using Java, wine, games (GL?)

you might find some useful techniques for -nouveau too. Really, you
want to get mlankhorst's attention since he'll be better able to help

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999109] Re: complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time using Java, wine, games (GL?)

2012-06-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Btw, you should be able to edit the description and title yourself, if
you have something better.

Just avoid generic titles like "Ubuntu freezes after a while", since
then a lot of people with that symptom but completely unrelated problems
will sub to the bug and start spamming it with irrelevant details.

** Summary changed:

- complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time using Java
+ complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time using Java, wine, games (GL?)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007575] Re: SB Arena USB headset causes X BUG, can't click outside window

2012-06-06 Thread Chase Douglas
Hi Mike,

I can't reproduce the issue by merely instantiating a virtual input
device based on the device.prop file you gave me. Perhaps the device is
sending button or key events? After plugging in the headset, please
perform steps 1, 2, and 6 from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multitouch/Testing/uTouchEvEmu#Debugging. Let
the evemu-record utility run for about a minute, then kill it with
ctrl-c. Then attach the file to this bug.

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973297] Re: Xorg recognizes Logitech Headset USB dongle as input device then segfaults in XIChangeDeviceProperty

2012-06-06 Thread Chase Douglas
I believe I have found the issue, and the patch sent upstream is:
http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2012-June/031541.html.

I have applied the patch to the package and uploaded a test package to
ppa:chasedouglas/jupiter. Please test it out after it has finished
building. The version of the package is 2.7.0-0ubuntu1.2~jupiter1. If it
resolves the issue, I will create a new SRU package for it.

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007575] Re: SB Arena USB headset causes X BUG, can't click outside window

2012-06-06 Thread Chase Douglas
Hi Mike,

Please capture the input properties of your headset input device (your
headset is acting as an input device because it has buttons). After
plugging in your headset, follow
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multitouch/Testing/uTouchEvEmu#Debugging. You
only need to perform steps 1, 2, and 5, the rest can be skipped for this
bug. When it asks you to find your multitouch device, look for your
headset instead. Once you have a device.prop file for your headset,
attach it to this bug.

Also, please attach the output of xinput list --long when the headset is
plugged in.

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1007575] Re: SB Arena USB headset causes X BUG, can't click outside window

2012-06-06 Thread Mike Harris
The new packages fix the BUG, but I'm still getting the weird click
behavior.

What I'm seeing:
1. In a Konsole session, start a "sudo tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log" to watch
the X log.
2. WIth focus still in Konsole, plug in the head phones.
3. Try to click another Konsole window I have open. Nothing happens from the
click.
4. But I can click in a Chrome window I have open.
5. For the next second or so, I can click normally. But then it goes back to 3.

What other logs or toubleshooting would help?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 825624] Re: patch: added dead_hook and dead_horn to latin keyboard layout

2012-06-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
The latin keyboard map lacks functionality to do dead_hook and dead_horn
characters, which makes it inconvenient to type Vietnamese characters.

  [Development Fix]
Patch from reporter was accepted upstream, and included in precise as a
cherrypick of what went up.

  [Stable Fix]
We're carrying the same xkeyboard-config in both quantal and precise
currently, so can carry the same patch both places.

  [Test Case]
- 1. Set keyboard map to latin
- 2. Type the 3rd and 4th level on the j key
+ 1. In System Settings, go to Keyboard Layout
+ 2. Select Layouts
+ 3. Press the '+' to add a layout
+ 4. Type 'Maori' (or other layout that imports Latin)
+ 5. In Options, make sure you have 'Key to choose 3rd level' selected (e.g.
set to Right Windows key)
+ 6. Hold your configured 3rd level key (e.g. Right Windows key)
+ 7. Press j

  Broken Behavior: No character printed
Fixed Behavior: 3rd level places a hook under characters, 4th puts a horn on
top.

  [Regression Potential]
None expected, this adds functionality to previously unused keys.

Possibly some people have locally mapped j to other key behaviors, but
seems unlikely, and they can just as easily locally re-map it again if
  they prefer.

  [Original Report]
Because I occasionally type in Vietnamese, but not with sufficient frequency
to learn a completely different keyboard layout, I find it most useful to add
dead_hook and dead_horn to the latin keyboard layout (as imported from the
Maori layout). I had thought this a minor enough issue to just leave the patch
on my own system but it got overwritten last time I did a distribution upgrade.
The added deadkeys are on level 3 and 4 of the J key, which were previously
unused.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1009612] [NEW] Mouse cursor jumps to wrong side of screen

2012-06-06 Thread Omegamormegil
Public bug reported:

I use two monitors side by side with Xinerama. I have an nvidia card
and am using the proprietary drivers. Often, when I am using the mouse
on the right monitor and try to move it onto the left monitor, the
cursor leaps from the left edge of the right monitor to the left edge of
the left monitor (instead of the right edge of the left monitor as
expected). I'm attaching a screencast displaying this behavior. Note,
it doesn't happen 100% of the time.

** Affects: libxinerama (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 977646] Re: Screen won't enter power down

2012-06-06 Thread cfaber
Hi,

I don't believe that dimmer control has much affect here. As stated in
the OP even xset dpms direct commands fail to sleep or suspend the
screen. More than likely this is a bug in the kernel, as the latest
nvidia drivers in earlier kernel versions would work successfully.

That said, I'm happy I can finally suspend and resume the machine as a
whole without random lockups, so I can live with a fading back light
until this is addressed =)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1009569] [NEW] libosmesa6 package description claims to include both x86_64 and i386 shared objects, but only contains x86_64 shared objects

2012-06-06 Thread Andrew Clunis

On 12.04, x86_64.

Package file list for libosmesa6 is:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu

/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/libosmesa6
/usr/share/doc/libosmesa6/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/libosmesa6/copyright

However, package description includes:

"This package provides both 16-bit and 32-bit versions of the off-screen
renderer which do not require external libraries to work."

Additionally, is there a particular reason why it isn't a standard
multiarch package?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999109] Re: complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time using Java

2012-06-06 Thread Jonas Platte
Another UPDATE:
I now discovered that there are two types of freezes:
The first one is what I mentioned before: complete system freeze, no mouse
move, music lags and ends some seconds later.
But I now had some freezes (more rare) that didn't affect the music. I couldn't
change to the virtual consoles, but I was able to access the computer via ssh.
I'll try that with the next freezes too.

And it's absolutely clear now that it's not a java bug. I got it also
with Games on wine and rarely also without playing games (When desktop
effects of Unity apperared or when i clicked onto notifications of Opera
Next).

Btw: I'd be glad to be able to help fixing the bug, I have some basic
knowledge of C/C++.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 980058] Re: Sometimes see vertical bands, artifacts across screen after boot

2012-06-06 Thread Michael Cobb
OK, so I've made a discovery in terms of what could be causing this
problem, it appears that when the display is garbled, it's because
vesafb is being used, rather than the intel driver. attached it the
relevant dmsg that i got by sshing into the computer, note the following
lines when the graphics are garbled:

Dmesg when the display is garbled:
...

What would cause vesafb to be used instead of inteldrmfb?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 974830] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2+] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x78170003 using Oracle SQL Developer

2012-06-06 Thread Andy Choens
This really needs to get resolved sooner rather than later. I am
seriously considering downgrading to 11.10 because it is so much more
stable for me. I use Ubuntu because I want a stable development platform
and right now, 12.04 just ain't ready for my needs.
