[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 931122] Re: 3D performance is very bad

2012-06-13 Thread Mark Jonas
Yes, unity 5.12-ubuntu1.1 helps. But the Unity performance is still
unedifying.

Ubuntu (3D):
# Moving windows is and fading effects are still very jerky.
# glxgears runs at 30 fps
# glxgears -fullscreen crawls most of the time at 5 fps but sometimes jumps up
to 18 fps.

Ubuntu 2D:
# Moving windows feels like it was before in 10.04. The window moves together
with the pointer, no more drag but not smooth.
# glxgears runs at 60 fps and seems to be limited by the screen refresh rate.
Good!
# glxgears -fullscreen still crawls along with 4.7 fps.

I know that glxgears is not a proper benchmark but it is an application
with simple 3D graphics and should run smoothly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-06-13 Thread ragtag
I think this bug is related to anything that uses the graphics card for
accelleration, be it 3D games, Flash, Blender or Chromium. It also seems
to only happen on specific graphics cards, and I'm not 100% sure they're
all from NVIDIA. I had a similar thing happen on my laptop with an
intgrate Intel 950 card, just after 12.04 release, but that problem
vanished soon after. I know there was some issues with the Intel
graphics driver on release of 12.04, so maybe that is what fixed it. I
don't have this problem at all on

I think the only way you can re-create this bug is by having hardware
that causes this bug, and using any software that uses hardware
acceleration for a short while. It doesn't seem to be triggered by any
specific action beyond that. I get this consistently on Quadro FX 3700,
but there is no one thing I do to cause it, and have even had it
happened once when I stepped away from the computer for a short while.
Generally I have Chromium and the Gnome terminal window open, but have
had it happen with just a terminal and Blender.

I've done multiple clean installs of 12.04, and I've done a clean
install of Fedora 17 with Gnome 3, and had the same bug happen there. It
seems like a tricky bug to figure out, as it's not caused by any
specific action, other than a combination of specific hardware and using
hardware acceleration, and possibly Gnome.

I am sorry the problem is still present with your ppa. I also think that the
linked report (bugzilla) is a different issue.
I have taken a look at the screenshots and they look different in comparison to
my problem.
As it seems there are only textures flickering (missing).
In my case the »GL content« is corrupted and flickering/flashing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1012607] [NEW] xserver-xorg-video-all fails to install

2012-06-13 Thread Sean O'Brien
Public bug reported:

It appears that a few of the dependencies for xserver-xorg-video-all
have had their package file truncated in the 12.04 LTS 64 Bit Alternate
ISO (ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso). This causes Ubuntu setup to fail
during the Select and install software phase giving an error message
that xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau could not be
installed.

Here are the package names from ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64.iso

\pool\main\x\xserver-xorg-video-ati\xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubuntu2_.deb
\pool\main\x\xserver-xorg-video-ati\xserver-xorg-video-radeon_6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubunt.deb
\pool\main\x\xserver-xorg-video-nouveau\xserver-xorg-video-nouveau_0.0.16+git20111201+b5534a1-1build2.deb

I confirmed the proper package file names on us.archive.ubuntu.com:

\pool\main\x\xserver-xorg-video-ati\xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
\pool\main\x\xserver-xorg-video-ati\xserver-xorg-video-radeon_6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
\pool\main\x\xserver-xorg-video-nouveau\xserver-xorg-video-nouveau_0.0.16+git20111201+b5534a1-1build2_amd64.deb

I can confirm that replacing the above mentioned packages with the ones
from us.archive.ubuntu.com does solve the installation failure, and I
haven't come across any other issues with the alternate installation
media as of yet.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 906021] Re: Opening the dash or alt+tab it is very slow and laggy

2012-06-13 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Accessing the Unity menu, is such a common task, that this menu should
be cached or pre-rendered, so that there is absolutely no noticeable lag
after you hit your super key.

It literally takes 2 or 3 seconds for the Unity menu to appear after
hitting the super key.

I remember back back when Windows didn't cache their start-menu. Every
time you'd click it, it had to access the hard drive before it could
display it. Later, they cached that into RAM, and it made start-menu
navigation more instant.

When I'm launching an application, I hit my super key, and then I have
to wait for the Unity menu to come up before I begin typing. This
annoyance has finally grown to the point that I'm willing to write this
bug-report.

All efforts should be made to cache/pre-render this menu, so that the
displaying of it will be instantaneous upon user initiation!

I want my computer to always assume that my very next task is going to
be to hit my super key and display the unity menu, and I want it to be
geared toward making that happen instantly.

Also, in my opinion, even 1 second is way too long. 100 milliseconds,
however, is acceptable. This could be accomplished with pre-rendering

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 906021] Re: Opening the dash or alt+tab it is very slow and laggy

2012-06-13 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Sorry, I need to mention one other thing.

I do notice that it is faster after the first time you access it. For me
the very first time (after a reboot) takes about 2 or 3 seconds.
Thereafter, it takes 1 second (which to me is still too long).

I'd like to see, as part of the login process, this become pre-cached
/pre-rendered, before the first time I ever go to the menu. This will
have a great perceptual speed increase to everyone who uses Ubuntu. This
is my number one performance enhancement request for Ubuntu, and that is
why I'm emphasising it so much.

This CAN be done. Even for people who have slow hardware, if designed
right, this menu can be instant.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-13 Thread Michael
@ #294
there is no triggering package (except linux kernel 3.2.x series).
simply boot from a ubuntu live cd/usb with no updates at all and your system
will hard freeze ;-)
I also have a system with intel hd 4000 graphics... with Linux 3.4 everything
works great and stable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 977804] Re: Unity crashes when many windows are opened (intel_do_flush_locked failed: No space left on device)

2012-06-13 Thread ossjunkie
@Bryce: I just tested the packages from your PPA, but as you have
already guessed Mesa 8.0.3 doesn't fix the issue. What i meant was also
rather new major versions.

But as you changed the status to incomplete what advices do you have on
further debugging and testing? Or did you have the chance to reproduce
the issue yourself like already explained?

BTW The issue should affect a rather large installation base with the
relevant Intel generations also being in netbooks and chromebooks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 793310] Re: Screen freeze when changing displays

2012-06-13 Thread Brendan_P
I'm in a world of pain on 12.04 with similar issues. I switch between my
laptop display and attached display multiple times a day. Since
switching to the fglrx driver I get display freezes and regular hard
locks on the system...

It's a bloody nightmare.

I want to run my great new Humble bundle games... but it's pointless if
I cannot use my computer normally to do so.

The driver works fine in normal operation, it's only on display changes
that things go tits up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-06-13 Thread Noah Danros
I can confirm that the usage of a external (PCI-E) graphic card circumvents the
bug.
That is only the viable solution I have come up with, as kernel upgrade to 3.4
or higher causes some inconsistencies between various programs, and a few bugs
with others in Ubuntu precise 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1011317] Re: Graphics freeze

2012-06-13 Thread Robert Perce
** Summary changed:

- Xorg freeze
+ Graphics freeze

** Description changed:

I have a HP Pavilion dm1-4010us; after upgrading to Ubunu 12.04 from
10.04 I began experiencing freezes. In such a freeze, the mouse is
completely unresponsive, the keyboard almost so: Ctrl+Alt+F1 has no
effect (both with and without the Fn key, which I never have to use to
get to framebuffer console anyways), but I am able to
Alt+PrintScrn+REISUB to reboot. They happen more often when my laptop
is under a high load, but not always -- I have had a freeze completely
idle. I believe ability to REISUB means there's no kernel panic, so I
  suspect the problem is in graphics drivers or something of the like;
the freezes persist through both generic ubuntu drivers and proprietary
  ati drivers.

Attempts to recreate the freezes are rarely successful; there's no one
program opening that causes them or something. They occur most often
(besides during high load) when a program is opening, closing, or
  changing state.

Again, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04; my xorg is version 1:7.6+12ubuntu1, as
  reported by apt-cace policy xorg.

+ EDIT: Not xorg. As changed by... someone... it's gotta be the graphics
+ drivers: I experience these freezes even after 'sudo service lightdm
+ stop' -- i.e. no X at all. Also, I can't seem to REISUB when the freeze
+ occurs from a virtual console.

I am able to replicate the this bug 100% of the time by scrolling up and
down quickly in Google Image search results. The bug seems to be fixed
as early as 3.3.6 (maybe earlier). Appears to be a GPU hang. There are
three i915 related commits in 3.3.6.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1012851] [NEW] Nvidia settings doesn't save monitor config

2012-06-13 Thread Jesus Ignacio Madrid Laguna
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 12.04 fully updated some days ago.

I cannot save my monitor config resolution. By default it is started
with 1280x1024 but my monitor support on WIndows 1920x1200.

When I run the program from terminal I can see this errors:

$ nvidia-settings

ERROR: Unable to open X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for writing.

This error is triggered just when press the button Save to X Configuration
File. I check the file permissions for the file xorg.conf

 ls -ialh /etc/X11/xorg.conf
525956 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1,6K jun 13 22:31 /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If I start the nvidia-settings as root user, my file xorg.conf is fully
updated. So probably the error is because the program doesn't detect the
user privilegies.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-06-13 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Nearly every i915 related commit from 3.3.x have been applied to 3.2.x
upstream, most of which are in the kernel in precise-proposed, rest of
which are in the next update after that. The remaining three commits are
related to sprite support (new in 3.3) and some blank eDP issue.

I have an ivybridge system myself, and 3.3.x is not enough for me at
least. It's trivially easy to get a gpu hang by opening the session menu
from the login screen, 2395cc578b83382 from 3.4-rc3 is needed to fix
that. I'm currently bisecting through 3.4-rc kernels to see which one of
them is stable and which ones hang..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-06-13 Thread Timo Aaltonen
uh, I mean even that one commit from 3.4 isn't enough for my case, so
there must be something else to backport, since at least 3.4 final is
stable here. It's just quite hard to bisect through the list of commits,
when reproducing the hang can take several hours, and the number of
commits to i915 is over 100 in 3.4-rc1 compared to 3.3

Timo: It's great to hear that 3.4 should be stable and that you are
working hard on getting the fixes backported.

I always buy new hardware too early, I had freezes with sandy bridge and
the one before sandy too in the ubuntu versions that was current at the
time. :P

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-06-13 Thread Carl Richell
Timo, I'm building a test kernel with this patch committed in 3.3.5:

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.drivers.intel/10832

I don't see it in 3.2.0-25 and the description appears relevent - the
patch applies a GPU hang fix for gen 6 (Sandy Bridge) to = gen 6 (gen 7
including Ivy).

I don't have a hang from the session menu on our Ivy Bridge hardware.
Only either random hangs - or, as mentioned, it's pretty easy to cause
by quickly scrolling up and down in Google Search image results - takes
up to a couple minutes. The scrolling clue came from here:

http://partiallysanedeveloper.blogspot.com/2012/05/ivy-bridge-hd4000
-linux-freeze.html

Some System76 users followed these directions and haven't seen the
freezes since.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 989811] Re: In some games it is impossible to use scroll wheel while mouse is in motion

2012-06-13 Thread Rolandas Garla (Gmail)
Congrats Smuj, good for ya!
Is it possible to rebuild xorg-server on Ubuntu 12.04? Sorry for my ignorance,
I'm only a 'light' user of linux. Would not know whether ABS works in ubuntu,
etc.
How long would it take for this fix to reach folks like me with normal
distribution updates? I can't wait to get back to my favorite game that was
ruinded for me by ubuntu 12.04 release.
I like the idea of open source very much, but having used Win platform for my
work, I think linux would not survive in a tough production/engineering
environmet - the support is too loose. Getting a bit disappointed now after
initial open source euphoria is gone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)

2012-06-13 Thread Carl Richell
Timo, our system froze with the patch - no good. We'll keep hacking from
our side as well. Let me know if we can help split up the work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1004546] Re: Ubuntu fglrx cannot recognize video memory at boot, blank screen

2012-06-13 Thread Lunarts
Well, kind of found a workaround myself after a lot of research, in the
end, the only clue(not really a true help) I ever received was the
mention of the error line message by David above.

Navigating throught nvidia video memory issues on linux at boot I saw
something like the below here(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/537218):

add at the grub entry settings nopat or vesafb.invalid=1, and it
worked; tested just the nopat, removed the quiet splash(but maybe also
leaving quiet splash would work anyway).

I'm a bit gratefull only to David, since he was the only one which tried
to help.

Sorry, I said the name wrongly, replace David with Dave Lentz.
