[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 931122] Re: 3D performance is very bad
Yes, unity 5.12-ubuntu1.1 helps. But the Unity performance is still unedifying. Ubuntu (3D): # Moving windows is and fading effects are still very jerky. # glxgears runs at 30 fps # glxgears -fullscreen crawls most of the time at 5 fps but sometimes jumps up to 18 fps. Ubuntu 2D: # Moving windows feels like it was before in 10.04. The window moves together with the pointer, no more drag but not smooth. # glxgears runs at 60 fps and seems to be limited by the screen refresh rate. Good! # glxgears -fullscreen still crawls along with 4.7 fps. I know that glxgears is not a proper benchmark but it is an application with simple 3D graphics and should run smoothly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/931122 Title: 3D performance is very bad To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/931122/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash
I think this bug is related to anything that uses the graphics card for accelleration, be it 3D games, Flash, Blender or Chromium. It also seems to only happen on specific graphics cards, and I'm not 100% sure they're all from NVIDIA. I had a similar thing happen on my laptop with an intgrate Intel 950 card, just after 12.04 release, but that problem vanished soon after. I know there was some issues with the Intel graphics driver on release of 12.04, so maybe that is what fixed it. I don't have this problem at all on I think the only way you can re-create this bug is by having hardware that causes this bug, and using any software that uses hardware acceleration for a short while. It doesn't seem to be triggered by any specific action beyond that. I get this consistently on Quadro FX 3700, but there is no one thing I do to cause it, and have even had it happened once when I stepped away from the computer for a short while. Generally I have Chromium and the Gnome terminal window open, but have had it happen with just a terminal and Blender. I've done multiple clean installs of 12.04, and I've done a clean install of Fedora 17 with Gnome 3, and had the same bug happen there. It seems like a tricky bug to figure out, as it's not caused by any specific action, other than a combination of specific hardware and using hardware acceleration, and possibly Gnome. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 Title: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/973096/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 906021] Re: Opening the dash or alt+tab it is very slow and laggy
Accessing the Unity menu, is such a common task, that this menu should be cached or pre-rendered, so that there is absolutely no noticeable lag after you hit your super key. It literally takes 2 or 3 seconds for the Unity menu to appear after hitting the super key. I remember back back when Windows didn't cache their start-menu. Every time you'd click it, it had to access the hard drive before it could display it. Later, they cached that into RAM, and it made start-menu navigation more instant. When I'm launching an application, I hit my super key, and then I have to wait for the Unity menu to come up before I begin typing. This annoyance has finally grown to the point that I'm willing to write this bug-report. All efforts should be made to cache/pre-render this menu, so that the displaying of it will be instantaneous upon user initiation! I want my computer to always assume that my very next task is going to be to hit my super key and display the unity menu, and I want it to be geared toward making that happen instantly. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/906021 Title: Opening the dash or alt+tab it is very slow and laggy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/906021/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 906021] Re: Opening the dash or alt+tab it is very slow and laggy
Sorry, I need to mention one other thing. I do notice that it is faster after the first time you access it. For me the very first time (after a reboot) takes about 2 or 3 seconds. Thereafter, it takes 1 second (which to me is still too long). I'd like to see, as part of the login process, this become pre-cached /pre-rendered, before the first time I ever go to the menu. This will have a great perceptual speed increase to everyone who uses Ubuntu. This is my number one performance enhancement request for Ubuntu, and that is why I'm emphasising it so much. This CAN be done. I'm in a world of pain on 12.04 with similar issues. I switch between my laptop display and attached display multiple times a day. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1011317] Re: Graphics freeze
** Summary changed: - Xorg freeze + Graphics freeze ** Description changed: I have a HP Pavilion dm1-4010us; after upgrading to Ubunu 12.04 from 10.04 I began experiencing freezes. In such a freeze, the mouse is completely unresponsive, the keyboard almost so: Ctrl+Alt+F1 has no effect (both with and without the Fn key, which I never have to use to get to framebuffer console anyways), but I am able to Alt+PrintScrn+REISUB to reboot. They happen more often when my laptop is under a high load, but not always -- I have had a freeze completely idle. I believe ability to REISUB means there's no kernel panic, so I suspect the problem is in graphics drivers or something of the like; the freezes persist through both generic ubuntu drivers and proprietary ati drivers. Attempts to recreate the freezes are rarely successful; there's no one program opening that causes them or something. They occur most often (besides during high load) when a program is opening, closing, or changing state. Again, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04; my xorg is version 1:7.6+12ubuntu1, as reported by apt-cace policy xorg. + EDIT: Not xorg. As changed by... someone... it's gotta be the graphics + drivers: I experience these freezes even after 'sudo service lightdm + stop' -- i.e. no X at all. Also, I can't seem to REISUB when the freeze + occurs from a virtual console. + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: xorg 1:7.6+12ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-24.39-generic-pae 3.2.16 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-24-generic-pae i686 NonfreeKernelModules: wl fglrx ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu8 Architecture: i386 CompizPlugins: [core, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, vpswitch, snap, mousepoll, resize, place, move, wall, grid, regex, imgpng, session, gnomecompat, animation, fade, unitymtgrabhandles, workarounds, scale, expo, ezoom, unityshell] Date: Sun Jun 10 15:33:46 2012 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: precise DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: - bcmwl, 5.100.82.38+bdcom, 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, i686: installed - fglrx-updates, 8.960, 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, i686: installed + bcmwl, 5.100.82.38+bdcom, 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, i686: installed + fglrx-updates, 8.960, 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, i686: installed ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, whatever it takes to get this fixed in Ubuntu GpuHangFrequency: Several times a week GpuHangReproducibility: Occurs more often under certain circumstances GpuHangStarted: Immediately after installing this version of Ubuntu GraphicsCard: - Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320] [1002:9806] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) -Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:3387] + Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320] [1002:9806] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) + Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:3387] InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin - Release i386 (20120423) JockeyStatus: - xorg:fglrx_updates - ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates) (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) - kmod:wl - Broadcom STA wireless driver (Proprietary, Enabled, In use) [auto-install] - xorg:fglrx - ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) + xorg:fglrx_updates - ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates) (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) + kmod:wl - Broadcom STA wireless driver (Proprietary, Enabled, In use) [auto-install] + xorg:fglrx - ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) MachineType: Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dm1 Notebook PC ProcEnviron: - TERM=linux - LANG=en_US.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + TERM=linux + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-24-generic-pae root=UUID=fc98791f-ecb4-4fd1-b389-580357b25629 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display Title: Xorg freeze UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 12/13/2011 dmi.bios.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.bios.version: F.13 dmi.board.asset.tag: Base Board Asset Tag dmi.board.name: 3387 dmi.board.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.board.version: 36.15 dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.chassis.version: Chassis Version dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnHewlett-Packard:bvrF.13:bd12/13/2011:svnHewlett-Packard:pnHPPaviliondm1NotebookPC:pvr06971020460320100:rvnHewlett-Packard:rn3387:rvr36.15:cvnHewlett-Packard:ct10:cvrChassisVersion: dmi.product.name: HP Pavilion dm1 Notebook PC dmi.product.version: 06971020460320100 dmi.sys.vendor: Hewlett-Packard version.compiz: compiz 1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1 version.fglrx-installer: fglrx-installer N/A version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.32-1ubuntu1 version.libgl1-mesa-dri: libgl1-mesa-dri 8.0.2-0ubuntu3.1 version.libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental N/A

Nearly every i915 related commit from 3.3.x have been applied to 3.2.x upstream, most of which are in the kernel in precise-proposed, rest of which are in the next update after that. The remaining three commits are related to sprite support (new in 3.3) and some blank eDP issue. I have an ivybridge system myself, and 3.3.x is not enough for me at least. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999910] Re: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard)
Timo, I'm building a test kernel with this patch committed in 3.3.5: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.freedesktop.xorg.drivers.intel/10832 I don't see it in 3.2.0-25 and the description appears relevent - the patch applies a GPU hang fix for gen 6 (Sandy Bridge) to = gen 6 (gen 7 including Ivy). I don't have a hang from the session menu on our Ivy Bridge hardware. Only either random hangs - or, as mentioned, it's pretty easy to cause by quickly scrolling up and down in Google Search image results - takes up to a couple minutes. The scrolling clue came from here: http://partiallysanedeveloper.blogspot.com/2012/05/ivy-bridge-hd4000 -linux-freeze.html Some System76 users followed these directions and haven't seen the freezes since. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/10 Title: [IVB]12.04 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/10/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 989811] Re: In some games it is impossible to use scroll wheel while mouse is in motion
Congrats Smuj, good for ya! Is it possible to rebuild xorg-server on Ubuntu 12.04? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm only a 'light' user of linux. Would not know whether ABS works in ubuntu, etc. How long would it take for this fix to reach folks like me with normal distribution updates? I can't wait to get back to my favorite game that was ruinded for me by ubuntu 12.04 release. I like the idea of open source very much, but having used Win platform for my work, I think linux would not survive in a tough production/engineering environmet - the support is too loose. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1004546] Re: Ubuntu fglrx cannot recognize video memory at boot, blank screen
Well, kind of found a workaround myself after a lot of research, in the end, the only clue(not really a true help) I ever received was the mention of the error line message by David above. Navigating throught nvidia video memory issues on linux at boot I saw something like the below here(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/537218): add at the grub entry settings nopat or vesafb.invalid=1, and it worked; tested just the nopat, removed the quiet splash(but maybe also leaving quiet splash would work anyway).
