[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-01 Thread Chowno
Hello everyone, I was playing around with this bug earlier today and I
believe I've made some progress as locating it. By chance I disabled
power management for my monitor, Ubuntu 12.04 has no screen saver so I
didn't worry about that, in order to watch a movie without interruption.
As luck would have it whenever I enable power management for my monitor
I have the video problem; yet when I disable it the problem vanishes. I
am currently using the Xorg-edgers ppa to have a heavily updated version
of the open source ATI/AMD driver and I experience no issues anymore.
Also, this ppa installed 3.5 kernel which appears to be behaving quite
well. Even flash plays at full screen now which is amazing. So as a
possible band-aid until the problem is fixed I would suggest disabling
power management for your monitor - much easier than recompiling a
kernel or wading through a git tree. Hope this helps! There wasn't any
error messages generated for those interested - I experience the problem
just like everyone else...

System Specs:
AMD Sempron 2600+ (oh yeah! smokin')
ATI Radeon HD 3650

2012-07-01 Thread Chowno
Hello again, please disregard my comment above. Watching Hulu at
fullscreen caused a lockup. Again no errors... One last thing - a
question really. Does anyone else notice that the system clock goes
haywire whenever this happens? It is really funny to watch as the
minutes fly by like half-seconds, and for a brief moment when I hit the
power button a dialog came up asking me how I wanted to shut down - I
think it timed out to suspend but the time counted down so quickly I
missed the preselected option. Well back to square one I guess. :)

HUGE kudos to Kevin LeBlanc, my system is stable thanks to his solution. See
post 329 above for details. Now if I could just play flash videos in FF 13
without my temps soaring to 70 C.. (my work around is to use my ASUS with win7
(LOL)
You may need to go into the Previous Linux Versions in order to find the
older kernel. If this is the case, then a step was missed.
I must have missed a step but having to do 1 extra key stroke after power on to
have a stable OS is a very small price to pay!

2012-07-01 Thread Kevin LeBlanc
I'm glad my solution helped you, Hessian. Basically, if you have to
access GRUB to get the older kernel, then the only step you missed was
removing the 3.2.0-25 kernel, as well as the 3.2.0-23-generic. No
biggie.

You're absolutely right, though; a few extra keystrokes is a small
sacrifice to have a fully-working computer.

And bug 1010016 may be a duplicate of this.

2012-07-01 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Chowno: Just because your system froze again, it doesn't mean that your
power management solution didn't work. I am suffering from another bug
where power management will constantly re-enable itself. You'll see this
by running xset -q and it will show dpms as enabled, even though you
disabled it. I recommend looking at that before discounting your own
solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)

2012-07-01 Thread ethanay
the invalid frame buffer dmesg report got me here...

same symptoms on intel graphics hardware (3 laptops), but *unable* to
get a workable desktop without reboot. TTY 1-6 work OK, but TTY7 is
stuck on blank screen, mouse cursor only. compiz --replace, metacity
--replace etc don't work and all report various error messages when
attempted.

i would call this a critical bug -- it renders the system completely
unoperable. my parents know enough to hold down the power button to
force the computer to turn off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 947354] Re: Synaptics Soft Button Areas not working in HP Envy 14 Clickpad

2012-07-01 Thread MatatTHC
This did it! That is the 2nd option. I did not try the other option.

Nevertheless I suggest to leave the bug open. The clickpad should be
recognised automatically. Ideally also usable values should be preset.
Alternatively a tool to adjust the values would be nice.

So, thanks for the help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-01 Thread Chowno
Hello again, following S. Christian Collins' instructions I placed the
clocksource=hpet command into the default grub sequence (which seems to
only get more complicated as grub versions increase) but I am not
entirely sure how to check if it is active. I have all of the debug
stuff in dmesg available by using xdiagnose to insert the appropriate
kernel debugging commands at boot time, but I only see a 'kernel command
line' article that gives the kernel options from grub and no mention
thereafter of a clock source. It didn't throw an error or say it wasn't
using it so it must be doing something.

As to power management, I ran 'xset -q' as Jeremy LaCroix recommends and
I can say that DPMS is enabled but that its event timers are all set to
0 so I imagine that is effectively off. I'll try adding a monitor
section explicitly disabling DPMS in my 90-custom.conf file from the
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d directory.

I'll try to make my system crash some more and report back what happens.
Thanks for the suggestions!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-01 Thread Jeremy LaCroix
Chowno, if dpms shows enabled, then it is enabled. On mine, sometimes it
will show 0 seconds and literally blank out if I don't continue to move
the mouse (though on yours this obviously isn't the case). With mine,
I've used the trick in xorg.conf.d to disable it too, but it still re-
enables itself. One time it was disabled for a week, but it eventually
came back. Another time, it only stayed disabled for an hour. With the
dpms bug it's literally iimpossible to keep dpms disabled, no matter
what you do. I'm still fighting with it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1019863] [NEW] Occasional ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Intel D815EEA2 ACPI S3 State Resume Freeze

2012-07-01 Thread fpgahardwareengineer
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I will like to report occasional instability of ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and Intel
D815EEA2 mainboard when resuming from ACPI S3 state.
Roughly 9 out of 10 times, the computer resumes from ACPI S3 State fine, but
once in a while, it will freeze.
This problem is pretty difficult to reproduce (happens randomly), but again, it
happens about roughly 9 out of 10 tries.

System Configuration:

- Intel Pentium III 1 GHz
- Intel D815EEA2 mainboard
  * BIOS Version P21-0039
  * Power - ACPI - ACPI: S3 State
  * Power - ACPI - Video RePOST: Off

- 512 MB PC133 SDRAM
  * 256MB module
  * 128MB module
  * 128MB module
- ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
  * 128MB
- Seagate ST320414A 20GB PATA hard drive
- Pioneer DVR-105 PATA DVD-RW drive
- Hitachi CDR-7930 PATA CD-ROM drive
- USB keyboard
- USB mouse

Note that graphics performance of ATI Radeon 9800 Pro display device driver is
very good that I don't have any complaints (Very good compared to older
generation graphics cards, that is.).
I don't know any graphics drawing related issues either.
It is only that ACPI S3 State resume doesn't work 100% reliably.
Please fix this problem.

Regards,

fpgahardwareengineer

I just checked the packages list for precise

173, i.e version...30, not ...35.

nvidia-173 (173.14.30-0ubuntu11) [restricted] NVIDIA binary Xorg
driver, kernel module and VDPAU library
nvidia-173-dev (173.14.30-0ubuntu11) [restricted] NVIDIA binary Xorg

Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library
nvidia-173-updates-dev (173.14.30-0ubuntu7) [restricted] NVIDIA binary
Xorg driver development files

Am I looking in the wrong place or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks for any pointers.

Chowno, issuing the following command will tell you which clock source
is being used. The first line is the available clock sources, and the
second line is the currently active clock source:

cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/*

On my system, this returns:
tsc hpet acpi_pm
hpet

I had to switch to hpet since the tsc timing source is inaccurate on my
system and caused system instability.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-01 Thread Chowno
Okay I'm back. The results are not very good... The clocksource=hpet
unfortunately did not have any effect and it seems that power management
is also not effecting the freezes - I went so far as to use the
mysterious (even to Xorg) NoPM option in the ServerFlags section. I'm
going to try Kevin LeBlanc's idea of using a lowlatency kernel
(specifically 3.2.0.23.20 in the version info under synaptic) and I'll
see if this helps. Crossing my fingers!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-01 Thread Chowno
So I used the lowlatency kernel and got an authentic kernel panic when
playing an h.264 video through vlc (using the XVideo output). So either
the problem persists there or it is something else. I'm kind of running
out of ideas on what to test and how to approach this problem. Anyone
got an idea?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 952574] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 won't boot off USB key with NVidia GTX 560

2012-07-01 Thread jintermeister
Having the similar issues here. Basically, using the nouveau drivers,
one HAS to boot with nomodeset otherwise you'll hang on a blank screen
or in my case a screen with a couple of colored lines. BUT, nomodeset
practically de-activates the driver and you'll fail DRM and end up with
VESA capabilities. So this represents an un-usable system for many
people (not sure which cards are affected). So what, no more nouveau? or
is there some other workaround I've missed?

And for me, for some silly reason the proprietary drivers fail to
properly recognize my monitor resolutions and I'm stuck with 600x400
which is unusable. I think this is an unrelated issue though.
