[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990436] Re: Xorg with fglrx on ATI HD3650 crashes with Illegal instruction

2012-08-06 Thread Andreas Krause
You've just reproduced it, so it seems this bug is not fixed yet. Seems
to be the combination of nforce2-Motherboard and ATI video adapter.

No this is a unity (ubuntu alternate iso) installation. The one major
difference between the working laptop and the broken one is that the
broken one has quantal-proposed enabled (and from there is using the new
X stack).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774938] Re: Erratic cursor movement when using Coordinate Transformation Matrix

2012-08-06 Thread sm8ps
I would like to second the above statements about the bug still being
present in (L)Ubuntu 12.04 with Xorg-Server 2:1.11.4. I am using a
eGalax Inc. USB TouchController like Jon Szymaniak. So I had a script
calling xinput to set-props 'Evdev Axis Inversion' as well as
'Coordinate Transformation Matrix'. However, even without the axis
inversion, the pointer erratically jumps around the location pressed. So
it definitively seems to be an issue with applying the transformation
matrix.

Using the combined xinput set-props 'EvdevAxis Inversion' 1 0 and
'Option Calibration 105 1927 190 1857' in xorg.conf.d/99.conf
however gives me a decently calibrated, working touch screen without the
flickering pointer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1032187] [NEW] Major OpenGL performance degradation over time

2012-08-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a fully updated Ubuntu 12.04 x64 installation with Nvidia driver
302.17 enabled. The system contains an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video
card.

The problem I notice is that hardware acceleration stops some while
after log in. Immediately after reboot, GLXgears reports up to 3000 FPS.
After a few minutes to hours, hardware acceleration stops, which is e.g.
noticable by a sluggish response from the user interface. E.g. typing an
e-mail becomes impossible, since the letters appear too slow on the
screen. Re-running GLXgears in that case reports about 23 FPS.

I noticed that the problem does not occur if I keep GLXgears running on
the background. I can't find any unusual things in /var/log/xorg.0.log
that give hints about what is happening during the occurance of the
error.

  (a) An older version of the nvidia driver that is supported in Ubuntu 12.04:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates

  (b) Removing NVIDIA drivers completely (assuming the default fallback
nouveau driver works for you)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1014384] Re: Skype crashes X server when making video call

2012-08-06 Thread garvin timmann
I use Gnome 2 on Lucid, (the best of the last!)

On Ubuntu Skype version 4.0.0.7 when making a video call the video
window is flickery, with both the target call video and senders video
both trying to display.

The previous version worked well enough, but both the skype versions
eventually crash and need restarting.

I am looking for stability of the program above clear video calls
really.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1032187] Re: Major OpenGL performance degradation over time

2012-08-06 Thread MathieuO
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise

** Description changed:

- I noticed that the problem does not occur if I keep GLXgears running on
- the background. I can't find any unusual things in /var/log/xorg.0.log
- that give hints about what is happening during the occurance of the
- error.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033452] [NEW] Security issue in NVIDIA UNIX device files to map and program registers to redirect the VGA window

2012-08-06 Thread Alberto Milone
Public bug reported:

NVIDIA received notification of a security exploit that uses NVIDIA UNIX
device files to map and program registers to redirect the VGA window.
Through the VGA window, the exploit can access any region of physical
system memory. This arbitrary memory access can be further exploited,
for example, to escalate user privileges.

Here is the email by Dave Airlie on the issue:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1032187] Re: Major OpenGL performance degradation over time

2012-08-06 Thread MathieuO
I can confirm that the bug is also present in an older version of the
nvidia-graphics-drivers, since I have used an older version in the past.
I am pretty sure it was 295.40. I was hoping that the 302 drivers would
have fixed it, but obviously they don't. I will try the nouveau drivers
at a later moment.

I also noticed something when I was testing all these different
sessions. Usually the bug has appeared after some time of NOT using my
pc. Can it be related to my monitor being switched off? It does not
happen every time the monitor goes into standby (I can't reproduce it
that easily), but it seems to be correlated. In the xorg.0.log I also
see some lines like indicated below, that appear after monitor standby
(repeats several times with different code):

[251458.928] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Display (Samsung SyncMaster (DFP-0)) does not
support NVIDIA
[251458.928] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): 3D Vision stereo.
[251458.928] (**) NVIDIA(0): Using HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges from the EDID

[251458.928] (**) NVIDIA(0): device Samsung SyncMaster (DFP-0) (Using EDID

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]

2012-08-06 Thread Chris Wilson
Reclaiming ownership, downgrading priority since this is impossible to
fix without compromise with the current hardware support. For the
foolhardy, you may like to try Option TearFree true. It basically
runs another compositor layer between the framebuffer and the scanout,
so a major waste of memory if you are indeed using a pageflipping
renderer (video player, game, compositor). And it exposes a few bugs in
the Damage layer, so not ready for prime time just yet.

(In reply to comment #89)
I have tearing using Vlc on Intel HD Chipset Intel® Celeron® Processor G530
(Sandy Bridge), xf86-video-intel git version but even with 2.19.0 version,
 linux kernel 3.4.4, xorg-server-1.12.2, mesa 8.0.3, libdrm-2.4.33. I use
openbox desktop manager, and the only workaround to avoid tearing is to use
 Vlc
Opengl video output together with Vlc fullscreen option. I notice tearing
especially with 1920x1080 resolution video files.

With intel driver GIT Commit ID:
2941a5fe15626730869a48a63bb088e8ae2c0549, I can avoid tearing without
vlc Opengl video output, but I need Vlc fullscreen option enabled. Intel
driver accel method I use is SNA.

Could you tell us if Ivy Bridge suffers from the same issue? If no, SNB and IVB
are pin-compatible, so people affected could just upgrade CPU.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]

2012-08-06 Thread Chris Wilson
By other OS, I presume you mean the ones that *only* support
pageflipping compositors? Which for the reasons highlighted above work
just fine.

IVB in theory supports vsync'ed writes to the scanout, give or take a
few hundred microseconds in signal latency between the display engine
and the render pipeline. When I get my hands on an IVB, I'll hook up the
required kernel/xf86-video-intel infrastructure and see if the claimed
retrofit of vsync works...

In the meantime, the only answer is take a leaf out of the other OSes
playbook and only use pageflipping.

Sorry i'm about to buy an IVB to replace my GMA950.
I've read that since v2.6.38 Linux handles page flipping and it also seems that
DRI2 can handle it : am i wrong ? Therefore could it be solved using current
stack ? Or is a new compositor like Wayland needed ? Thanks

If you have an unredirected fullscreen DRI2 application, then it will
use pageflipping to update the scanout upon a SwapBuffers. So something
as simple as 'mplayer -fs -vo gl' should be enough to achieve tear-free
playback on most DE (you may have to tweak a few compositor settings if
using one though).

Same with UXA and vlc with glx output. No compositor here. I can clearly
see tearing when I connect the laptop to an external monitor to watch
movies.

I think there's two bugs being discussed here. One is that compositors
that don't unredirect fullscreen windows may give you tearing. Another
is that even without using a compositor, and even if you render using
OpenGL, you can still get tearing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]

2012-08-06 Thread Oleksij Rempel
I was redirected to this bug. In my case i have tearing only if i use mplayer
with -vo xv. It plays fine with -vo gl2. No composite window manager used.
I also can reproduce it with 2.20, but _can't_ reproduce it with 2.17 - it's
why i call it regression. Cris, are you sure it is the same bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]

2012-08-06 Thread taolab
(In reply to comment #92)
Reclaiming ownership, downgrading priority since this is impossible to fix
without compromise with the current hardware support. For the foolhardy, you
may like to try Option TearFree true. It basically runs another compositor
layer between the framebuffer and the scanout, so a major waste of memory if
you are indeed using a pageflipping renderer (video player, game, compositor).
And it exposes a few bugs in the Damage layer, so not ready for prime time
 just
 yet.

I tried Option TearFree true with intel driver git version
146959dd5ef28384a3db4fce4bf7840f2b3ec58c or Intel 2.20.2 (with SNA acceleration
enabled) + kernel 3.4.7 + vlc 2.0.3 and I did not have tearing anymore even
disabling vlc fullscreen option.

mga/+bug/292214/comments/8 has a first analyses of this issue:

Andy MacLean (0) wrote on 2008-11-07: (permalink)

I have the same issue with a G550 card in dual head mode and managed to
change the code to get it all working with some nasty hacks. It looks
like it was broken when they changed the driver to use libpciaccess to
map memory regions instead of using the old xf86MapPciMem calls. There
are two problems:

- It tries to map the card's IO and iload regions twice, once for each
head. libpciaccess doesn't like having two mappings for the same PCI
region in the same device so it gives back EINVAL and this causes the
breakage. I took out the check in pci_device_map_range in libpciaccess
and this worked OK.

- The new code maps the whole framebuffer into both heads because it
uses region-base_addr and region-size instead of pMga-FBAddress and
pMga-FbMapSize. This makes both displays draw onto a single monitor and
it all looks very silly. I changed that in the mga driver and it works
fine now.

- after reboot, I have no log file anywhere = no way to know what happened.

As long as I dont have logs, I can not comment here. I think launching
over ssh will NOT help (too many caches every where in IP layers).

What I can say is that ... I am pretty sure X 1.5 does not take care any
more about the conf file. I can also say that I have several Matrox, and
one non matrox card; and that, whether I tell the conf to use xinerama

get any log ...

even things like (forgot what I typed exactly)

disk. So, even stdoutdisk does not work (X freeses the kernel before the ext3

No, this is a side effect of this bug. As long as the virtual area is
accessible, there is no reason for the DE/WM not to authorize icons or
windows to move in the virtual area. If this behaviour persists once
the present bug is fixed, *then* I'll file a bug for that.

Window/icon coordinates are outside of X. I can move a window/icon
OUTSIDE of the accessible area as long as the WM allows me to. It's the
DE's responsibility to check which areas of the X screen are actually
displayed on (any) monitor and place the icons/windows accordingly.

What happens when the mouse pointer issue is fixed and I find icons end up in
this dead area?
At the moment I can rescue them by drawing a selection box around a visible
icon and those icons off the screen. Then, using the visible icon, I drag this
group of icons until I can see them all on the desktop.

I thought I would add a link to the Ubuntu forums where I have just made a post
with the other relevant multi-monitor bugs in case it is of help to anyone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033452] Re: Security issue in NVIDIA UNIX device files to map and program registers to redirect the VGA window

2012-08-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates -
304.32-0ubuntu1

---
nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates (304.32-0ubuntu1) quantal; urgency=low

  * debian/control.in, debian/rules:
- Switch from cdbs to debhelper.
  * New upstream release:
- Fixed security issue that allowed an exploit to
use NVIDIA UNIX device files to map and program
registers to redirect the VGA window. Through the
VGA window, the exploit could access any region of
physical system memory. This arbitrary memory
access could then be further exploited, for
example, to escalate user privileges (LP: #1033452).
- Added support for xserver ABI 13 (xorg-server 1.13).
- Fixed a bug that caused RRSetOutputPrimary requests
to incorrectly generate BadValue errors when
setting the primary output to None. This caused
gnome-settings-daemon to crash after changing the
screen configuration in response to a display
hotplug or the display change hot-key being pressed.
- Fixed a problem where RENDER Glyphs operations
would exhibit severe performance issues in certain
cases, such as when used with gradients by Cairo
  and Chromium.
- Fixed a bug that caused X to hang when resuming
certain DisplayPort display devices (such as Apple
brand mini-DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapters)
  from power-saving mode.
- Added support for the following GPU: Tesla K10
- Fixed a bug that caused an X screen to be extended
to Quadro SDI Output devices by default. An X
screen will still use an SDI Output device if it
is the only display device available. To use a SDI
Output device on an X screen with other display
devices available, include the SDI Output device
with either the UseDisplayDevice or MetaMode
  X configuration options.
- Updated X11 modeline validation such that modes
not defined in a display device's EDID are
discarded if the EDID 1.3 GTF Supported flag is
unset or if the EDID 1.4 Continuous Frequency
flag is unset. The new AllowNonEdidModes token
for the ModeValidation X configuration option can
be used to disable this new check.
- Fixed a bug, introduced in the 295.xx release
series, with EDID detection on some laptop
internal panels. This bug caused the laptop
internal panel to show six small copies of the
  desktop.
- Added support for FXAA, Fast Approximate
  Anti-Aliasing.

I think this is a duplicate of bug 989902. The xorg-server code is
correct, but the alternate CDs (all flavours) are naming them wrong on
the image.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026777] Re: Xorg segfault: kicks out to login screen

2012-08-06 Thread Andy Iverson
Finally got the /etc/X11/core created on recent crash yesterday.

Trying the gdb command, I was first presented with an error, after which
I ran the bt full command (inside gdb). Maybe I have a problem and gdb
is not running well? I'll post the reply when starting gdb, and then
the results of the gdb full command:

first, just starting gdb (I had changed permissions on the core file
to be 666):

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()

2012-08-06 Thread Andy Iverson
This seems to be simliar to the bug I have been following here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/956071

Largely newer Thinkpads with Intel graphics. I have tested with the
xorg edgers PPA and still had the issue. I can reproduce the crash by
doing successive suspend / wake cycles. Usually crashes (kicks out to
lightdm, that is) after 3, but sometimes the 4th wake from suspend. In
this case (quick successive suspend / wake attempts by closing the lid),
I can see when it crashes because the lenovo half moon light remains
blinking after the lid is closed (should go solid after suspend
achieved).

I should note that in this above case when I open the lid I am already
back at the lightdm login screen. Other real life crash times, the
machine wakes up fine, but after approximately 30 seconds to a minute
(while using the machine) it kicks me out to the lightdm screen (as
others report here).

The above bug report has a few full backtrace calls after one of the
reporters heled us get our machines set up to do full reporting. There
may be info there that can help here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1030535] Re: [Sandybridge] Xorg crashes in XIGetDeviceProperty after standby

2012-08-06 Thread Andy Iverson
Also similar reporting going on at this bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/956071

I am guessing the OP here is experiencing the crash by being kicked out
to the login screen (lightdm)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966825] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in mieqProcessDeviceEvent()

2012-08-06 Thread Jon Pfeil
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 930792 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/930792

Is bug #930792 still open? I am having this same problem and there are
already a bunch of duplicate bug reports all pointing at #930792, which
doesn't appear to exist. Are there any updates on this?
