[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 945006] Re: Screen flickers heavily after upgrading to 12.04 beta 1

2012-08-15 Thread Alexander Bumgardner
Hey guys,

I have a Samsung NP300V5a, and I reported the exact same issue as bug #
1028723. They decided it was the same bug as #1028151, and that is
where I have been directed to continue commenting.

In any case, I just tested the latest upstream ubuntu kernel at
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc1-quantal/.
I believe it has resolved the issue, but I am going to wait a day or so to make
sure. I know it might take some time to prepare an official ubuntu update, so
I am extremely tempted just to keep using this new kernel. Anyway, check up on
#1028151, hopefully they will see the testing and then help all of us out.
This was never a problem with 11.10! Oh well!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 969860] Re: fglrx uses 100% CPU when screen turns off (spinning in glXWaitVideoSyncSGI or glXSwapBuffers)

2012-08-15 Thread capiporra
Well, this is a little bit embarrasing.

The workaroung porposed in #48 have another error, sorry.

I prefer to detail it again.

This is the only workaround that works for me:

### ATI Privative
_

ccsm-OpenGL-Sync to VBlank [disabled]

1. Open Catalyst Control Center (admin mode).
2. Display Options - Tear Free- [disabled]
3. Go to 3D More Settings.
4. Set Wait for vertical refresh - Off unless aplication specifies.
_

With Wait for vertical refresh- On, unless application specifies,
I've problems with compiz with ot without Sync to VBlank enabled.

Enabling cssm-workarounds-Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on
repaint doesn't solve the problem in any workaround while vsync is enabled in
cssm or catalyst control center. But disabling vsync completely and enabling
Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint seems that reduce the
tearing a little bit. Anyway, obviously since I don't have vsync I'm suffering
of tearing.

### Radeon OpenSource

In the other hand, with the radeon opensource driver, only disabling
ccsm-OpenGL-Sync to VBlank (keeping buffer swap dissabled) solves
the problem and don't suffer tearing (but the GPU temp is clearly
hottest comparing with privative). I'm testing since two days without
problems. In a few days will report if I had more problems or I can
replicate the problem with compiz

Resuming, only the [WORKAROUND 2] solves the problem (in my case)

As curiosity, In Ubuntu 11.10, when I install the privative driver, I
always need to disable ccsm-OpenGL-Sync to VBlank to reduce tearing
or some type of ¿shuttering? when moving windows quickly, and enable
Tear free in the catalyst Control Center.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread Rolo
I've been using the workaround of running in 2d mode since I first
encountered the random log off bug when 12.04 first came out (I subbed
to this bug 2012-06-08 13:23:32). Since then, even with heavy daily use
(8 hours+) I haven't had a single random logout... until today, just
now. I presume something to do with some of today's updates.

As I said, this has been working fine for me, so I hadn't tried any of
the driver fixes, but I thought it worth mentioning this. I'll try the
driver upgrade now.

@Timo, there have been a couple other bugs reported like this, where the
 workaround is to remove xfs.
Should we just drop xfs from the archive? We don't need it for anything afaik?

Please note that xfs can run over TCP. So this is roughly like having a crash
in ssh, and asking if the fix would be to remove sshd.
We run N (where N 1) Ubuntu instances here, and it makes life much, much
easier to add fonts at a central server.

I am a Sysadmin and we have 20 workstations running Ubuntu. Most of them
are still running V11.04. Two week ago I installed 3 new PC with 12.04

desktop with Nvidia card. One is i7 and the other two are Core2 6600.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 976331]

2012-08-15 Thread Eric Anholt
I've also opened googleearth on my 965gm system, zoomed to my home, then
swiped with the mouse to send it panning across the globe. It's going
fine. We're probably going to need some more specific steps for
reproducing the problem if we're going to get anywhere. Where is the
map pointing at when the problem occurs. Can you reproduce it at the
initial position looking at the globe without otherwise interacting with
the app? If you can't reliably reproduce the problem, can you reproduce
it once while using apitrace, then produce it again by replaying that
trace?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1037237] [NEW] X starts up with only top half of screen showing

2012-08-15 Thread Gregg Aronson
Public bug reported:

System: Asus eeepc 1201 HAB netbook
OS: Ubuntu 12.04
current kernel: 3.20-29-generic-gae (problem occurs with all previous kernels
as well.

When the system first boots up. the screen is completely blank. I have to press
Ctrl-Alt-Fx (where x=1 through 6).
Then I have to press Alt-F7 go get X. However X then displays only on the
top half of the screen. Moving the cursor up and down shows that the desktop
display is wrapping around on itself vertically. Moving the cursor up or down
the length of the screen shows the cursor wrapping up from the top or bottom. I
can get around this by going to the top of the screen and logging off. Then the
screen comes back in full screen mode and I can log in normally. I can also do
this by going into one of the ttys and finding /usr/bin/X and then killing the
process (as root or sudo).

The only video mode available in X is 1366 x 768. I suspect that if I
chould change this, I might be able to get X to load correctly the first
time.

Ubuntu used to have an inittab file available and also an Xorg.conf file
available that you could acrually use. The man pages for X and boot
still indicate these pages exist and can be used, but this is appartnely
not true anynmore. (At least, I can't find them in any usable form). I
would also like to know how to configure the system to boot up without X
and then try starting it up manually with startx.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2012-08-15 Thread Nat Tuck
The problem seems to have gone away after implementing the work around
described here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=256841

Specifically, I performed the following steps:

# Create an xorg.conf file.
Xorg -configure
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

# Disable input device autodetection by adding the following to
# Section ServerLayout in the new xorg.conf file:
Option AllowEmptyInput Off
Option AutoAddDevices Off

# Install the old default keyboard driver since the new
# driver depends on auto-detection.
apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-kbd

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread ConEG
I'm being cautiously optimistic but i do believe the latest driver
(304.37) has fixed the issues i was having. I had been using the Nouveau
Driver until i saw about the newest driver and got excited. I manually
installed it earlier on today. My computer (Ubuntu 12.04) has been
running for a few hours and i've been pushing it with tasks that were
previously sending me to the log in screen. So far i have not been able
to get it to crash.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1037263] [NEW] some /etc/X11/Xsession.d scripts append the previous command to themselves

2012-08-15 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner
Public bug reported:

Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.6+12ubuntu1

In 75dbus_dbus-launch, 90consolekit, 90gpg-agent, and 90x11-common_ssh-
agent, when setting STARTUP, the script appends $STARTUP. That leads to
the programs being launched with the previous command as the arguments
to the current one, and this keeps on building:

$ ps auxww|grep launch
hans 3706 0.0 0.0 26548 780 ?S14:45 0:00
/usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session mate-session
hans 3703 0.0 0.0 20536 420 ?Ss 14:45 0:00
/usr/bin/gpg-agent --daemon --sh
--write-env-file=/home/hans/.gnupg/gpg-agent-info-palatschinken
/usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session mate-session
hans 3702 0.0 0.0 12484 320 ?Ss 14:45 0:00
/usr/bin/ssh-agent /usr/bin/gpg-agent --daemon --sh
--write-env-file=/home/hans/.gnupg/gpg-agent-info-palatschinken
/usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session mate-session

You can see where this happens in any of the previously mentioned
scripts:

$ grep STARTUP= /etc/X11/Xsession.d/* | grep '\$STARTUP'
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/50x11-common_determine-startup:
STARTUP=$STARTUPFILE
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/50x11-common_determine-startup: STARTUP=$shell
$STARTUPFILE
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/75dbus_dbus-launch: STARTUP=$DBUSLAUNCH
--exit-with-session $STARTUP
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90consolekit:STARTUP=$CK_LAUNCH_SESSION $STARTUP
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90gpg-agent: STARTUP=$GPGAGENT --daemon --sh
--write-env-file=$PID_FILE $STARTUP
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90x11-common_ssh-agent: STARTUP=$SSHAGENT $SSHAGENTARGS
${TMPDIR:+env TMPDIR=$TMPDIR} $STARTUP

This is on the latest version of Ubuntu/Precise with all of the updates
as of today.

ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc1-quantal/ but really don't know how to go about it.
Can anyone please direct me to a tutorial or suggest a source for this
info? Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread AG Restringere
The problem isn't the drivers it's the Xorg install script that
overwrites and alters files that the Nvidia Binary driver relies on and
then this crashes the X server. The file in question is
'/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so', the X Org files need to be
Vendor aware and not overwrite these types of files if Nvidia is
detected...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread Tye
@ag-restringere,
you aren't supposed to install the drivers from the .run while X is running. if
you took the time to read the README, you would have seen this:

Before you Begin

Before you begin the installation, exit the X server and terminate all OpenGL
applications (note that it is possible that some OpenGL applications persist
even after the X server has stopped). You should also set the default run level
on your system such that it will boot to a VGA console, and not directly to X.
Doing so will make it easier to recover if there is a problem during the
installation process. See Appendix J, Tips for New Linux Users for details.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread AG Restringere
@Tye, I understand you sudo service lightdm stop and inspect the
pstree for any GL processes...What I'm saying is that the following
Package 'X Org Core Server 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.7' writes over a file like
'/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so' that the Nvidia Driver
Package relies on and that the X Org Core Server package installer
script needs to be careful not to mess with files like that...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1037388] [NEW] GPU overheats with nouveau (ok with nvidia proprietary)

2012-08-15 Thread lcampagn
Public bug reported:

I am using kubuntu 12.04 on an HP mini 311, desktop effects disabled.
Originally I was using the nouveau driver. For the first couple of weeks I used
the machine, it would suddenly and immediately shut down a few times a day,
presumably due to overheating. I put the CPU through some heavy load tests
which did not result in any problems, but noticed that I most frequently
experienced shutdowns when viewing video.
I have been monitoring one of the internal temperature sensors
acpi/Thermal_zone/0/Temperature which was usually around 90C. Since switching
to the nvidia proprietary driver (~2 weeks ago), I have had no problems and the
temperature is around 65C most of the time.

All of this leads me to believe that the nouveau driver was causing the
GPU to overheat, but this is still somewhat speculative so I'd be happy
to run some tests if needed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1037417] [NEW] Automatic splitting screens wrong with 2 different height screens

2012-08-15 Thread matt
Public bug reported:

I have 1 screen with a resolution of 1600x1200, and another with a
resolution of 1920x1080.

Steps I did to create the bug:
1. Start a terminal window
2. Maximise it on the 1600x1200 screen
2. Move it to half of the 1920x1080 screen.
3. The bug should have created itself. The line with the cursor on it should be
off the screen, but it should still act as if it's there.
