Where I take the cursor, the artifact goes with it and flickers. 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System - About Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Release: 12.04 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or by checking in Software Center I don't know what package to mark this as. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058753] Re: Radeon driver nolonger works on PowerPC without drm
Maarten, thanks for the comment, although I am not sure I follow it (!) I know UMS has been dropped. I know it is never coming back. And I'm not suggesting for one minute that it should (the last version of radeon with UMS was largely broken from what I can gather). I just need confirmation from an X expert that the current PowerPC kernel setup is unworkable. I can then get the kernel and/or boot message on the ISOs updated. As I said in post 1 we are falling back into the fbdev driver in 8 bit pseudo colour. Is there a way to get this to a higher colour depth automatically? The current kernel config would be okay if we could start automatically in a higer colour depth. In the back of my mind I think I've read somewhere that framebuffers are set to 8 bit depth to save memory for KMS. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046088] Re: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook (304.43)
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as Confirmed. Thanks in advance. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer does not support HD2000-4000 legacy cards
I'm going to add a comment to help people Googling this issue. The ATI Mobility M7740 chip, which was one option for the Dell M6500 Mobile Precision laptop, is apparently considered a 4000-series chip, and so is a victim of this AMD policy. One of the supposed justifications for over-priced workstation-class graphics chips was top-notch vendor support. By so cutting short its support of this chip, AMD has demonstrated that they can't be trusted to support workstation-level users. Unless something radically changes, I can't see buy AMD for my Linux laptops / desktops anymore. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1042211] Re: [quantal] [regression] [i915] Corrupted display, desktop and menus don't repaint correctly using Mesa 9.0 (8.0.4 works)
So what's the plan here? It seems that this is serious enough to do something about it before the release of 12.10. I'm mostly curious but of course I'd also like to see a fix for this sooner than later but what are the options? I imagine that waiting for an upstream fix is out of the question (if mesa bug 49442 is the culprit it's marked as medium normal importance and besides I'm not sure if 12.10 is open for such patches this late?). The other option is to downgrade mesa in the repository but if that is done I'd imagine it would be best to do that sooner than later to get some testing done on it in the beta phase? Can anybody quench my curiosity and tell me who makes these decisions and what the process is then? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1042211 Title: [quantal] [regression] [i915] Corrupted display, desktop and menus don't repaint correctly using Mesa 9.0 (8.0.4 works) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1042211/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058641] Re: No devices detected radeon regression
@wxl and lars. You are not understanding this bug report. video=radeonfb:1024x768-32 etc is using the fbdev driver. It is not using the radeon xorg driver. If you are on PowerPC and you want to test for this bug then you need to turn off radeonfb using the video=ofonly (or video=radeonfb:off). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 952574] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 won't boot off USB key with NVidia GTX 560
I would like to confirm that this problem also has affected me with my Nvidia GTX 460 card since Ubuntu 11.04 as well as just a couple weeks ago with 12.04 desktop 64 bit. I've come to accept that there are certain loops and hoops I have to jump through to complete an installation, however Im afraid that this problem alone is going to be a huge hurdle in your accomplishing a resolution to your stated issue #1 as many people have Nvidia cards and if I weren't a quite advanced developer type user, along with quite stubborn, I would never have even installed the product at all. I can confirm that when starting up with an installation disk on a system with an Nvidia GTX card the screen goes to black with a blinking cursor top left. If you quickly hit the F6 key then this avoids the black cursor blinking issue and allows you to see the menu with installation options. If you then also, after choosing English, press F6 and select nomodeset you can get the installation to complete, however upon system load the screen is just the pretty pink tones and then nothing, no log in, nothing. Choosing the safe mode option from grub to log into will allow a person to many error messages referring to nouveau. The only way I could find that can then successfully get you in to make changes is to: Choose the option to go to a command prompt then sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current startx Then, opening the additional drivers interface ensure I am using the nvidia driver and restart. I am not sure if I forgot anything in that last list of steps, its been a couple of weeks, but I believe that is it. I found that combination of answers by reading solutions posted on many places on the internet and taking some notes and trying things. I don't think you'll get alot of people reporting this problem though as most people who are able to solve it are likely going to be people like me who are good problem solvers and enjoy the challenge and have used ubuntu before. Anyone new and without that deeper understanding is likely to just throw the disk in the trash and wonder why anyone would every use that because it is just a black screen with a blinking cursor. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/952574 Title: Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 won't boot off USB key with NVidia GTX 560 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/952574/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
