if one uses the -b (brief) argument the clock shows properly in 24-hour

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1060039] [NEW] Panning doesn't work

2012-10-02 Thread jftempo
Public bug reported:

Hi,

My laptop screen resolution is 1366x768 if I use xrandr to stretch it:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1366x768 --panning 2300x768
the desktop is extended but I can't move the mouse to the invisible part of the
screen.

There is a patch here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39949
could you apply it to 12.04 ?

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1059073] Re: dual screens flip to mirrored screens shortly after logging in

2012-10-02 Thread Alan Bell
it *might* be triggered by performing activity on the smaller laptop
screen, today I logged on and was happily doing stuff on the external
monitor then moved a window across to the laptop screen, typed something
and it flipped, the end of the xorg.0.log is:

[60.825] (II) PM Event received: Capability Changed
[60.825] I830PMEvent: Capability change
[ 166.920] (II) intel(0): EDID vendor SEC, prod id 12869

[ 166.920] (II) intel(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: Ignoring tiny 0x1100 mode

[ 167.493] (II) intel(0): Allocated new frame buffer 1408x768 stride 5632,

so here there is the normal PM Event received: Capability Changed at
around 60 seconds, but it is at 166 seconds that the display flipped to
mirrored.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-10-02 Thread Omer Akram
Hello everyone.

We have nvidia 304.43 driver in the precise proposed repository which
fixes this issue. All you need to do is disable any third party drivers
ppa (preferably ppa-purge) then enable the precise-proposed repository
from software sources. then sudo apt-get update and after that you just
need to go to 'Additional drivers' and select nvidia graphics drivers
update and just install.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058753] Re: Radeon driver nolonger works on PowerPC without drm

2012-10-02 Thread ojordan
Maarten, thanks for the comment, although I am not sure I follow it (!)

I know UMS has been dropped. I know it is never coming back. And I'm
not suggesting for one minute that it should (the last version of radeon
with UMS was largely broken from what I can gather).

I just need confirmation from an X expert that the current PowerPC
kernel setup is unworkable. I can then get the kernel and/or boot
message on the ISOs updated.

As I said in post 1 we are falling back into the fbdev driver in 8 bit
pseudo colour. Is there a way to get this to a higher colour depth
automatically? The current kernel config would be okay if we could
start automatically in a higer colour depth. In the back of my mind I
think I've read somewhere that framebuffers are set to 8 bit depth to
save memory for KMS. Is this true?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046088] Re: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook (304.43)

2012-10-02 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-
upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the
other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next
to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the
'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

@Joseph: In the context of bug #1055475 I tested the 3.6 rc7 mainline kernel
with nvidia-current and the nvidia-experimental (304.48) drivers on Quantal,
and the backlight adjustment did not work.
This is on a MacBook Pro 5,4, and not the Asus this bug report is about, but I
figure it might well be the same problem.

I don't have the exact same symptoms. It'll start X, but it looks all 16

video=radeonfb:xresxyres[-bpp][@refresh] where xres is
xresolution, yres is yresolution (use whatever's native to your machine;
you can look it up online), bpp is optional, and refresh is optional
refresh rate in hertz. example: video=radeonfb:1024x768-32@60

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer does not support HD2000-4000 legacy cards

2012-10-02 Thread Christian Convey
I'm going to add a comment to help people Googling this issue. The ATI
Mobility M7740 chip, which was one option for the Dell M6500 Mobile
Precision laptop, is apparently considered a 4000-series chip, and so is
a victim of this AMD policy.

One of the supposed justifications for over-priced workstation-class
graphics chips was top-notch vendor support. By so cutting short its
support of this chip, AMD has demonstrated that they can't be trusted to
support workstation-level users.

Unless something radically changes, I can't see buy AMD for my Linux
laptops / desktops anymore. What a shame.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1042211] Re: [quantal] [regression] [i915] Corrupted display, desktop and menus don't repaint correctly using Mesa 9.0 (8.0.4 works)

2012-10-02 Thread Stefan Freyr
So what's the plan here? It seems that this is serious enough to do
something about it before the release of 12.10.

I'm mostly curious but of course I'd also like to see a fix for this
sooner than later but what are the options? I imagine that waiting for
an upstream fix is out of the question (if mesa bug 49442 is the culprit
it's marked as medium normal importance and besides I'm not sure if
12.10 is open for such patches this late?). The other option is to
downgrade mesa in the repository but if that is done I'd imagine it
would be best to do that sooner than later to get some testing done on
it in the beta phase?

Can anybody quench my curiosity and tell me who makes these decisions
and what the process is then?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058641] Re: No devices detected radeon regression

2012-10-02 Thread ojordan
@wxl and lars. You are not understanding this bug report.
video=radeonfb:1024x768-32 etc is using the fbdev driver. It is not
using the radeon xorg driver.

If you are on PowerPC and you want to test for this bug then you need to
turn off radeonfb using the video=ofonly (or video=radeonfb:off).

However, as far as I can tell there should be nothing PowerPC specific
about this bug.

developer type user, along with quite stubborn, I would never have even
installed the product at all.

I can confirm that when starting up with an installation disk on a
system with an Nvidia GTX card the screen goes to black with a blinking
cursor top left. If you quickly hit the F6 key then this avoids the
black cursor blinking issue and allows you to see the menu with
installation options. If you then also, after choosing English, press
F6 and select nomodeset you can get the installation to complete,
however upon system load the screen is just the pretty pink tones and
then nothing, no log in, nothing. Choosing the safe mode option from
grub to log into will allow a person to many error messages referring to
nouveau. The only way I could find that can then successfully get you
in to make changes is to:

Choose the option to go to a command prompt then
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
startx

Then, opening the additional drivers interface ensure I am using the
nvidia driver and restart. I am not sure if I forgot anything in that
last list of steps, its been a couple of weeks, but I believe that is
it. I found that combination of answers by reading solutions posted on
many places on the internet and taking some notes and trying things. I
don't think you'll get alot of people reporting this problem though as
most people who are able to solve it are likely going to be people like
me who are good problem solvers and enjoy the challenge and have used
ubuntu before. Anyone new and without that deeper understanding is
likely to just throw the disk in the trash and wonder why anyone would
every use that because it is just a black screen with a blinking cursor.

Additionally, if you get a solution and want a tester I am available to
help test it and have an extra one terrabytes of a second partition on
this 3Gb/s sata disk to play with and another 1T 6 Gb/s sata disk to
test installing to as well... though I've never successfully installed
to one of my 6g/s disks, I'm not sure if it was this issue on that or
another as I settled in on my 3 G/s disk for ubuntu long ago.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1019444] Re: Update Precise to mesa 8.0.4 (bugfix micro-release)

There is currently an open CVE on 12.04 that the security team hopes to address
soon. Specifically:
http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2012/CVE-2012-2864.html

I looked at the diff for this -proposed update and it does not contain the
identified fix for the issue:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/src/glsl/link_uniforms.cpp?id=ff996cafce511dd8a6c4e066e409c23e147a670c

Can someone verify and reupload to -proposed with this fix? Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1040844] Re: Left Mouse Button Sometimes Gets Stuck in Unity (12.04)

2012-10-02 Thread Lance Hankins
I figured out an easy way to resolve this when it happens.

I had my laptop's touchpad disabled in the BIOS (since I would often
accidentally hit the touchpad while typing). I re-enabled the
touchpad in the BIOS, and now when things get into the state described
above (left mouse button appears permanently depressed) I can cure
things by pressing the left button on the touchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 938933] [NEW] Screen alignment out of wack at login screen

2012-10-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When Ubuntu boots, grub, plymouth is properly aligned. When it gets to
the login screen it is shifted to the left about an inch. autorest on
the monitor does nothing. Manually adjusting the screen does not work
because it turns out the login screen is too wide, and that messes up
the alignment after you log in. and when you login the the alignment
returns to normal. Strangely when I login to a kde session the issue
disappears until I log into unity/gnome session again.
