[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1010794]

2012-10-28 Thread Dsd-o
Created attachment 69139
Backported to xserver-1.13.0

The patch wouldn't apply for me, so I reapplied it by hand to
xserver-1.13.0, here it is.

Now, testing on OLPC XO-1.5 using the chrome video driver, I no longer
see any text corruption in the GNOME fallback applications menu.
However, the textual parts of some of the menu items are not appearing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-updates Radeon HD 6700M Series

2012-10-28 Thread J-Paul BERARD
Same problem here with a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits, with Phenom
processor and Radeon 6850 graphic card.
Either fglrx or fglrx-update open a session without Unity : no launcher, no
dash.

Not easy to go back to the free driver ! How to do :

Launch a Terminal with ctrl+alt+ T keys
Type : sudo apt-get purge fglrx*
give the password
Accept to remove the package when asked (type o)
Start again by typing : sudo shutdown now

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-updates Radeon HD 6700M Series

2012-10-28 Thread Tsur Herman
I confirm that Nick Andrick's solution works for me.
I have hybrid ati/intel graphics . downgrading the intel driver through his PPA
as described
in
http://askubuntu.com/questions/202857/cant-install-ati-proprietary-drivers-in-12-10/207270#207270
Solves my problem.
So I suggest you bug fixing ninjas out there focus on that intel driver.

Nick can you post a more detailed step by step instruction's on how to
downgrade the intel driver for those who are not
yet ubuntu savvy?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058641] Re: No devices detected radeon regression

2012-10-28 Thread ojordan
@John thanks that's another confirmation of this bug. Unity/compiz
won't work with the fbdev xorg driver (...or more correctly it is
supposed to work with llvmpipe, but there are still issues). If you
want to try KMS which may work with unity then you can define an
xorg.conf like I did
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#How_do_I_configure_an_xorg.conf_file.3F

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071937] Re: Documentation did not build correctly

Confirmed, I can see this on

intrinsics library

but I also see this in libx11-doc in
/usr/share/doc/libx11-dev/libX11/libX11.html, so this is something
common - some docbookism???

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1043513] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in memcpy() via cirRefreshArea() under KVM virtual machine

2012-10-28 Thread Dave Gilbert
actually, I seem to have found a reasonably repeatable sequence:
  1) Login
  2) open a gnome-terminal
  3) Walk through the 4 workspaces with ctrl-alt-arrows, within 2 or 3 times of
doing that reasonably quickly it blows up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1043513] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in memcpy() via cirRefreshArea() under KVM virtual machine

2012-10-28 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Bryce,
See backtrace attached; just generated, on an up to date Quantal:

ii xserver-xorg-video-cirrus 1:1.5.1-0ubuntu2
amd64X.Org X server -- Cirrus display driver

Looks the same one to me; it's a lot harder to hit this than it was a
few weeks ago - this survived an hour of web browsing (mostly lp
traiging) last night, but managed to trigger in a few minutes this
morning - so it's rather difficult to know when we actually kill this
bug. (kvm guest on quantal host)

prevent freezes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 999814] Re: Touchpad scrolling and tapping stops working after a while

2012-10-28 Thread Cedric Anderson
Hi, I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but just in case...

I discovered I had 2 instances of syndaemon running all the time. Once
I got rid of the instance that was started up from my autostart
folder, all seems to work ok.

I had added it to that folder myself a couple releases back but I guess
now in the current release it gets installed and started automatically
so it's no longer necesary to do it myself. At least this seems to have
solved my particular issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069551] [NEW] shutdown command does not power off the machine

2012-10-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

While using nvidia-current, If I try to shutdown the machine, it goes to a
black screen, backlight still on and nothing happens anymore. The before
suggested acpi=force did not help unfortunately.
The problem started after the update from 12.04 - 12.10

Ok, so I uninstalled nvidia-current and virtual box, and installed the mainline
uname -r
3.7.0-030700rc1-generic

With the mainline shutdown seemed to work ok.

WORKAROUND: Use nouveau. I then uninstalled the mainline and reinstalled the
ubuntu default kernel (without nvidia-current):
uname -r
3.5.0-17-generic

With this, the shutdown worked as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1072403] [NEW] Unity and GnomeShell hang or crash with nouveau kernel error messages fail ttm_validate, validate vram_list and validate: -12

2012-10-28 Thread Perseid
Public bug reported:

Hi,

since I reinstalled my Ubuntu (previous version was 11.04) my window managers
have become very unstable. I believe it is nouveau's fault as I found these
lines in /var/log/kern.log:
Oct 28 18:00:50 jakob-Vostro-1500 kernel: [ 1454.599145] [drm] nouveau
:01:00.0: fail ttm_validate
Oct 28 18:00:50 jakob-Vostro-1500 kernel: [ 1454.599150] [drm] nouveau
:01:00.0: validate vram_list
Oct 28 18:00:50 jakob-Vostro-1500 kernel: [ 1454.599204] [drm] nouveau
:01:00.0: validate: -12
The crashes appear to be nondeterministic:
Most of the time, when I boot the system with external displays plugged into
the VGA port, something crashes. In the worst cases the whole system crashes
and only SysRq keys are working. At other times I'm still able to reach the
terminal via ctrl-alt-f1. Even if the system survived, the window manager often
later on hangs and displays false colors and sometimes recovers. The log files
automatically attached by apport should document the latter error symptom.

I'd be happy to supply more information if you can give me hints how to
gather them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069551] Re: shutdown command does not power off the machine

Due to how this issue is reproducible with nvidia-current, and not
without/using nouveau, moving package to nvidia-current. Please send
back if deemed a kernel issue.

Thank you for your understanding.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

The ATI open source driver used to be working for my Acer Aspire AS5536
laptop's HDMI output (both 10.10 and 11.10 worked), but it doesn't work
any more in Ubuntu 12.10 -- My TV always shows Unsupported no matter
which option that I tired.

This is a fresh install.

what other info would you think is relevant and required?

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1043513] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in memcpy() via cirRefreshArea() under KVM virtual machine

2012-10-28 Thread Dave Gilbert
Some more diags;

(gdb) p *pbox
$2 = {x1 = -958, y1 = -716, x2 = -236, y2 = -282}

I'm not sure what the space these values are working is supposed to be; if
they're supposed to be -ve then they're in a sensible
range as far as I can tell - but are they supposed to be -ve?

(gdb) p pPriv-pScrn-virtualX
$7 = 1024
(gdb) p pPriv-pScrn-virtualY
$8 = 768

OK - seems right

(gdb) p src
$33 = (unsigned char *) 0x7f0a78505cd6

7f0a784e-7f0a78506000 r-xp fd:01 660179

7f0a78506000-7f0a78706000 ---p 00026000 fd:01 660179
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexpat.so.1.6.0

(gdb) p/x width
$37 = 0x876
(gdb) p/x src+width
$38 = 0x7f0a7850654c

Well that's why it's crashed - the src pointer is in the middle of expat
and ends up running into the unreadable bit

(gdb) p dst
$34 = (unsigned char *) 0x7f0a770c8cc6
Map entry: 7f0a76feb000-7f0a772cc000 rw-p 00:00 0

(gdb) p/x pCir-ShadowPtr
$30 = 0x7f0a78709010
(gdb) p/x pCir-FbBase
$31 = 0x7f0a772cc000
(gdb) p pCir-ShadowPtr-src
$24 = 2110266
(gdb) p pCir-FbBase-dst
$25 = 2110266
(gdb) p FBPitch
$26 = 3072

both clockwise and anti-clockwise)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1064192] Re: [update request] nvidia-173.14.36 adds support for xserver ABI 13 [quantal]

2012-10-28 Thread zago84
I've installed the 64bit version but whe I reboot:

1) It's evereything black so I have to put nomodeset after quiet
splash in grub configuration.

2) Xorg fail and system says:

The system is running in low-graphics mode
Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected
correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

3) After it says What you like to do? so I tried to reconfigure
graphics loading a new config or a backup one but it fails again so now
it run only if I select Run in low-graphics mode for just one session
every time I have to turn on my PC...

What I have to do?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1072432] [NEW] Xorg freezes / Kernel soft lockup / Xorg.0.log: NVIDIA(0): WAIT(..)

My Xorg freezes every once in a while (I didn't manage to find a
specific trigger yet, and the time between the freezes can vary between

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069551] Re: shutdown command does not power off the machine

2012-10-28 Thread Unseen
This is more related to the nvidia driver, so switching over from kernel
makes sense...

The nvidia-current-updates unfortunately behaves exactly as nvidia-
current, so it doesn't work.

Current version at the moment of writing: 304.51-0ubuntu1

Anything else I can provide? :-)

About the issues with nouveau: I think someone who acually uses it
should report it, since I need this computer alot, alos for work stuff
and I don't want to switch drivers all the time. Besides I think its a
general thing that CUDA needs nvidia drivers ;-) Sry.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068404] Re: 1002:6760 Switchable graphics on Radeon HD 6400M not working again

2012-10-28 Thread Marco Vuano
Regarding the first part of the bug (Unity not working after installing fglrx),
this is a known bug (when using the integrated GPU after installing fglrx,
direct rendering has problems) which is now more apparent becuse it seems that
Unity 2d is no longer present on Ubuntu 12.10. There is a solution for this
bug, which is described in step 2 of the first message of this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1930450
I tried that myself and now Unity works even when using the integrated GPU.
Regarding the second part of the bug (low graphics mode after installing fglrx
and running sudo aticonfig --initial), it is probably the same bug as the one I
reported (after all, PowerXpress 4.0/dynamic switchable graphics is also used
on AMD Radeon HD 6770M).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-updates Radeon HD 6700M Series

2012-10-28 Thread Marco Vuano
regarding Unity not working after installing fglrx, the workaround is described
in step 2 of the first message of this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1930450
I tried that myself and now Unity works even when using the integrated GPU with
fglrx installed.

Regarding the steps to install intel driver from Nick's page, I would recommend
these steps:
1-go to
https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=field.status_filter=publishedfield.series_filter=quantal

and click on
xserver-xorg-video-intel - 2:2.20.0-0~andrik1
2-download the xserver-xorg-video-intel packages appropriate for the
architecture (xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.20.0-0~andrik1_amd64.deb for 64-bit
systems, xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.20.0-0~andrik1_i386.deb for 32-bit systems)
3-open the terminal
4-go to the directory where the packages have been downloaded
5-run
sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.20.0-0~andrik1_amd64.deb (for 64-bit
systems)
or
sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.20.0-0~andrik1_i386.deb (for 32-bit
systems)

In my case, the intel driver was enough to make the fglrx and fglrx-
updates drivers from quantal/restricted repository work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1064192] Re: [update request] nvidia-173.14.36 adds support for xserver ABI 13 [quantal]

2012-10-28 Thread Flames_in_Paradise
Well, I assume you've done a manual installation of the .run file. In
this case I strongly recommand to read the software-providers
documentation b4. I've fighted my way through it a few years ago (Ubuntu
7.04 days).

A manual installation does _NOT_ pull in the required package-
dependencies automatically. My bad - it took me quite a while to
understand this then. If you are not willing to read the documentation -
Just don't do it.

You'll need at least the kernel-headers-generic, DKMS, build-essential,
xserver-xorg-dev. If you are stilll interested there might be a chance
you can ask someone more experienced at your local Ubuntu Community.
Probably there is which would even be better a local community wiki.
Manual installation sometimes is o.k. Low graphics mode puts you in
vesa-graphics state (repair mode).

This is one of the reasons why i placed this bug. Please don't
misunderstand me, per favore: This platform is for bugreporting, it's
not a help-forum. B U T you gave me an idea: I'll ask the X-swat-Team to
provide a version for testing in advance via ppa-x-updates. It won't be
there by the next days, because atm the experts are at he UDS-R.

I know at least 3 persons near your location that use+like Ubuntu, _and_
are quite good experts helpful enthusiasts. CIAO

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1072531] [NEW] [regression] X11 screen blanking after 10 minutes with no UI to change it

2012-10-28 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

After updating from Ubuntu 12.04 Precise to Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal, X11
has started automatically blanking the screen after 10 minutes of
inactivity even though I have set Turn off screen when inactive in
Brightness and Lock to 1 hour.

If I change Turn off screen when inactive to 1 minute, then the screen
turns off after 1 minute as it should, but if I set it back to 1 hour
then the screen goes back to blanking after 10 minutes, not turning off
after 1 hour as it should. So it seems that there are two independent
timers and the GUI has no effect on the 10 minute one.

Looking in xset, there is indeed a 10-minute screen blanking timeout.

Note that I am using a dual head configuration so I have an xorg0.conf
and an xorg1.conf, but there is nothing in either related to screen
blanking. Both heads experience the same problem. My other machine that
I upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 does not.

Running xset s 0 0 avoids the problem.
