[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1061073]
Created attachment 69265 Bisect log (Kayden) I managed to reproduce this after all. Steps to reproduce: 1. Enable KWin's Show FPS counter plugin. 2. Configure the Present Windows effect to one of the screen corners. 3. Mash that repeatedly and watch the FPS counter. On HD 4000, a good version of Mesa results in perhaps ~55-60 FPS. Bad Mesa can be as low as 17 FPS, often mid-30s. I also went ahead and bisected it (the log is attached). e943e5c291c5f4c017f9f5a483f194031fc3 is the first bad commit commit e943e5c291c5f4c017f9f5a483f194031fc3 Author: Chad Versace chad.vers...@linux.intel.com Date: Thu Aug 2 17:13:17 2012 -0700 intel: Advertise multisample DRI2 configs on gen = 6 This turns on window system MSAA. So in other words, it looks like KDE is using multisampling now, whereas it didn't before. Our implementation of that may not be optimal, and may have bugs, but it will always be far slower than single sampling. My next question would be: how can one disable the use of MSAA in KWin or Plasma? (In reply to comment #16) Unfortunately, I can't seem to reproduce this: I also have KDE 4.9.2 and Mesa 9.0, but it appears to work fine for me. My knowledge about mesa and opengl is very limited so sorry about my terminology. To reproduce this bug you must use kwin_gles (http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2011/07/running-kwin-with-opengl-es-2-0/). Using gentoo try set USE flags gles -opengl at kwin package. With kwin default (i think it is call backend) opengl everything is ok. Like I said in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55856 this not happen in mesa-9.0_pre20120918. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1061073]
Ouch. Well...in that case, I'm not sure what to do on the Mesa side...perhaps a point release of KWin could fix this? For what it's worth, KWin from git master has the slowdown with the GLX backend, but appears to work well with the EGL backend. I imagine that's because it uses eglChooseConfig, and doesn't request any samples, so Mesa gives it a proper non-MSAA config. It's just with GLX, where KWin rolls its own algorithm, that there's a problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1061073 Title: Desktop effects are slow and desktop corruption using mesa 9 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kdebase-workspace/+bug/1061073/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1061073]
(In reply to comment #25) I've pushed a patch to KWin that should fix the problem. The patch is in both master and the 4.9 branch, so you should see it in 4.9.3. That release will be tagged on Thursday. Thanks Fredrik! Based on that, I'm closing this as RESOLVED/NOTOURBUG. @Rune: The GLX backend in KWin uses glXGetFBConfigs(), so the ordering rules in the spec don't apply here. I've thought about rewriting that code to use glXChooseFBConfig(), but I'm reluctant to touch working code without a good reason. This bug might be enough of a reason to do that though. @Rune: Feel free to double check by running glxinfo, but I believe the ordering is correct: multisample configs are always sorted later, as required. Using glXChooseFBConfig() does seem like a good idea...could guard against future problems (though I don't know what), and should simplify the code a fair bit. Also, KWin's EGL backend uses eglChooseConfig() and it never had this problem. That would also make the GLX and EGL backends more similar. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1019340] Re: GPU Lockup. Xorg? nouveau?
I've got the same graphics card, and am getting GPU lockups whenever 3D is involved (Unity desktop). Screen glitches while logging in for once. Internal error reports on launching Software Centre or Printers settings menu. Bringing up the Dash breaks it to the point where I have to re- login. Launching LibreOffice causes graphics distortion, windows go blank, including other open apps, global menu disappearing and so forth. This is in 12.10 64-bit Ubuntu. Never had a chance to test it in 12.04 as Nvidia proprietary driver was offered by default. On a side note, I can see that Xorg is not properly configured, as it tries to load nvidia module first, then nv module, and finally falls back to nouveau module as the other two are not available. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1019340 Title: GPU Lockup. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1024027] [NEW] System hangs after installing Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I have the following hardware configuration: Intel 2nd Gen Core i7-2600 3.4GHz 64 bit, 8GB DDR3, 1.5TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GT420 I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit installed. a) I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit, burned it on DVD at 8x and rebooted. I see the initial ubuntu startup screen and the screen goes blank with some messages. Thereafter the system hangs with no response. The only option is to reboot. So I could not install 12.04 LTS b) I then downloaded 12.04 LTS alternate 64 bit. The installation went smoothly but after restarting and loading Ubuntu in grub, the system freezes with some messages. See attached picture for both the cases when the system stopped responding. Note that I was able to install 64 bit Ubuntu 11.04 and lower. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete ** Tags: bot-comment -- System hangs after installing Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1024027 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071101] Re: nearly every other boot I get Low Graphics Mode message.
I have stripped out the timestamps so I could do a diff of the two log files (there is probably a way to skip the first n charactors of each line in diff, but I did not see it in a quick look at the docs). Attached is a diff of Xorg.0.log files between a good boot, and a boot where the graphics dropped into low graphics mode. The first thing in the log that shows an error is the setversion 1.4 failed. Things go south from there. What is setversion? What is it trying to do? Why would it fail? ** Attachment added: Diff of good boot log bad boot log https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1071101/+attachment/3423152/+files/good_vs_bad_diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1071101 Title: nearly every other boot I get Low Graphics Mode message. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 96676] Re: function keys don't work in gnome-terminal
Changing the code is the only way that I see.
