[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1039148] Re: When logging in to Unity, the Desktop session crashes

2012-11-12 Thread Karl Hegbloom
I get pretty much the same errors in the dmesg log, but the X server
starts up and runs mostly alright, but after it's been running a while,
starts getting wonky, like it won't respond for a long time, then
suddenly comes back to life, but hangs intermittently from then on. A
reboot is necessary to make it usable again.

I suspect this is nVidia's bug, though I do see a few mentions via
Google searches of patches made in the past to the Linux kernel
surrounding the ioremap and nVidia's proprietary drivers.

I've tried their newer driver, 304.60, and it's the same.

NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 304.51 Tue Sep 18 17:16:56 PDT

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1045899] Re: Maximum number of clients reached

2012-11-12 Thread Brett Johnson
I see this same behavior without using nitrogen. I simply run a daemon
that regenerates the image nautilus is pointing to as the desktop
background periodically. After leaving it running overnight, I get the
same "Maximum number of clients reached" error. I can continue working
for a while by killing nautilus, or chrome, or some other application,
but I have to restart X to get back to normal again.

I have removed the duplicate link since this bug has nothing to do with

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1078094] [NEW] tapping touchpad moves cursor

2012-11-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On my acer timeline M5, when I tap on my touchpad, the mouse moves a
little bit each tap. This can be reproduced by going to an area of the
desktop and steadily tapping on the mousepad at a rhythm that would
cause a single tap event. You can see that the mouse will move slightly
during many of these tap events, which when trying to perform precise
clicks (ex. closing tabs in a web browser, selecting text) may cause the
pointer to move enough distance to cause an unintended mouse click.

Suggested fix would be to not allow any x, y coordinate change when a
tap is detected, otherwise allow the mouse movement (i.e. in the non-tap
scenario).

** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1076872] Re: [HP Probook 4530s] Unity does not load with fglrx-installer in 12.10 AMD Radeon™ HD 6490M

2012-11-12 Thread Michael Knopp
I don't recall if I tried installing fglrx-updates, but I did install
the intel driver and the fglrx.

The symptom after installing your drivers is low graphics mode. After
installing the official drivers I get the background with no window
borders and no menus.

In both of these attempts I installed from a fresh install of 12.10.

I mistakenly made this previous bug report when using your workaround if
this helps: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1075688

2012-11-12 Thread Nick Andrik
Michael did you try both drivers from my PPA?
You have to install the intel driver and one of the fglrx ones.

Moreover, when you say unity does not load, what is the exact symptom?
a) You can see the background and the windows but you have no menus and no
window borders, or
b) You get a message about safe mode in a window over a black background?

The launcher script "/usr/lib/fglrx/bin/amdxdg-su" tests for various

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 881526] Re: System freezes, kernel crashes, "[fglrx] ASIC hang happened"

2012-11-12 Thread Matthew Scheirer
I have this issue on 12.10 stock, with the stock 3.5.18 kernel,
fglrx_updates, an A10-5800k, and no overclocking on any system
component. I tried overvolting some parts to make sure its a software
error, which it seems to be. I'm going to try Kernel 3.6 to see if it
solves anything.

Christopher: installing fglrx-updates has the same effect. Graphics are

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033263] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nvidia drivers

2012-11-12 Thread Lorant Nemeth
With a fresh install of 12.10, lifebook E8410 ( Nvidia 8400M G):
- default nouveau driver messes up screen (all kind of artifacts)
- latest closed source diver (from Nvidia 304.64 ) causes lockups both with
unity and gnome-shell

Focusing on the nvidia driver problem:
- although system is not responding to any user interaction, I'm able to log-in
via ssh and reboot (sometimes I'm even able to use ctrl+alt+f1, then
ctrl+alt+del to reboot, but all the time I see the locked up graphical
interface)
- also applications like skype, date-time... seem to crash often, but I'm not
sure if these are related

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1077512] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel regression, video playback not smooth on external display after video driver update

2012-11-12 Thread Mikael Hartzell
Hi again :)

My brother pointer me to an old thread from year 2010 on
bugzilla.kernel.org that discusses a problem that has exactly the same
symptoms as mine (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16265).

And this seems to have shed some light on this problem, it might have to
do with the driver polling the video interfaces to see if new displays
have been attached and the polling locks display updates for a while.

Workaround 1

If I do:

echo 0 > /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

after booting, then the problem goes away. Strangely if I now re-enable
polling with:

echo 1 > /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

the problem does NOT come back, it stays away until next boot. Maybe
this resolves some kind of "knot" the kernel + video driver have tied
themselves into.

Workaround 2

Booting the machine with kernel option:

drm_kms_helper.poll=0

makes the problem go away.

As far as I understand these are not a real solutions, since now the machine is
unable to discover new displays attached to it.

This also does not explain why the problem does not exist in the intel
driver package originally shipped with Ubuntu 12.04 and why it appeared
in the first update.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069031] Re: intel gma3600: X unable to start

2012-11-12 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
The attachment "Fix gma3600 issue on Ubuntu's Xserver" of this bug
report has been identified as being a patch in the form of a debdiff.
The ubuntu-sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that
they can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. In the event that
this is in fact not a patch you can resolve this situation by removing
the tag 'patch' from the bug report and editing the attachment so that
it is not flagged as a patch. Additionally, if you are member of the

Also confirmed here and waiting on this. X isn't completely unusable,
though. At least for me VESA still works. That does mean running the
desktop in less demanding mode, though.

New 173 driver has been out for quite a while and should fix this if
someone updated and built the package.
