Could you provide the Xorg log from the hanging session? It should be Xorg.0.log.old after you've rebooted. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1096943] [NEW] Ubiquity freezes during nfs-based desktop install from recent live destkop images on physical hardware
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I'm attempting to do automated installs of raring live desktop images over a network on physical machines using a combination of cobbler and NFS. Since December 20, these installs have failed on i386 and amd64. DI installs from current server images work, and old images work fine for ubiquity installs. At some point during the installation, video stops updating. I started an install with an active SSH server and I was able to run apport that way, but the local video still does not update. This is on a machine Canonical's magners lab. I've looked at lp:1080701 but removing all partitions before installing doesn't seem to help. Please let me know what other information I can gather. I've attached the Xorg.0.log.old for you viewing pleasure:) I also tried the latest mainline kernel as you suggested and still get the hang. Instead of reverting the package, I modified that Xorg.conf file you provided earlier and changed AccelMethod sna to uxa and of course it works now. One other thing that occurred to me in. This machine is a pre- production version of a Dell Inspiron N5110 which is borrowed from PES. The BIOS is a pre-production BIOS and I have no way to upgrade it to the A Rev production BIOS. Installation on my ubuntu 12.10 amd64 seems to be Ok, load of nvidia driver seems to be correct while booting for my Geforce FX 5700 LE (I don't find any error in logs). BUT Unity fails to start at login (see x-0-greeter.log attached). I need to manualy restart Unity from a terminal session to access desktop on X and then no launcher and no windows headers are displayed. Through CCSM, I have deactivated all effects, tried to unselect/reselect unity plugin to resolve conflicts with other plugins (CCSM signals plugins that have to be deactivated...) but no result ! My DVI monitor suffers from display corruption when booting, and can only run in mirror mode with my second VGA monitor. Plugging in only one monitor fixes the problem, but only allows the one display to be used. Booting into kernel 3.5.0-21 fixes all issues and everything operates normally. I believe this is related to kernel changes in the DRM/radeon drivers made upstream and first spotted in xorg-edgers a while back in #1093753, although the proposed commit patch there did not resolve all issues. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1105510 Title: [radeon] regression from 3.5.0-22 from 3.5.0-21 for multi-monitor setups To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1105510/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1020051] Re: Xorg freeze
I'll file details from two machines where I can confirm bug tomorrow. This bug seems to affect amd64 and/or ATI hardware only. The bug appeared first 4-6 weeks ago, there were no such problems before, and all the updates from the last weeks didn't solve the problem. As reported, the screen freezes, mouse pointer movable, but no clicks / keyboard work. It is possible to login via Alt+F1 and kill X so that it restarts. The freezes I have seen (still today after yesterday's Precise updates) always occurred with a Firefox with graphics/video plugin ins active, never on pure text windows (e.g. Openoffice, emacs, eclipse). All machines I'm reporting on below are updated regularly and run fairly standard Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Compiz/Unity and the standard graphics drivers that Ubuntu suggests/installs automatically. Two machines with almost identical hardware *do have* this bug: Athlon 4050e (Asus M2A-VM) with AMD 690G Chipset - Integrated ATI Radeon X1250-based graphics The following machines *do not have* this bug although software is almost the same (but different CPU and graphics boards): - a Mac mini 2010 with Intel Core2 Duo P8600 and Nvidia graphics - a Lenovo Thinkpad T60p with Dualcore Pentium and ATI graphics (machine must be approx. 6 yrs old) - a Samsung NC10 netbook with Intel Atom N270 and Intel GMA 950 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1020051 Title: Xorg freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1020051/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 990436] Re: Xorg with fglrx on ATI HD3650 crashes with Illegal instruction
I can confirm that this issue still exists on Ubuntu 12.04.1 (32-bit) and affects fglrx versions 8.950 (Catalyst 12.2) on AGP systems. The issue is also present on the most recent Catalyst 13.1-legacy. I tested this on a VIA KT400 chipset, so the issue is not exclusive to nforce2-based systems. Since the Xorg.0.log backtrace points out the fglrx_dri.so library, I tried rebuilding the 12.4 and 13.1-legacy debs using the 12.2 versions of fglrx_dri.so and fglrx-libGL.so.1.2 which I believe are needed to enable DRI. Surprisingly, the modified 12.4 drivers boot to desktop without error. The modified 13.1-legacy, however, reaches the desktop with GLX hardware acceleration disabled. I'm going to stick with Catalyst 12.2 for now, as replacing the dri and libGL libraries in newer versions is prone to be buggy. As far as I can tell, whatever changes AMD's driver team made to fglrx_dri.so and fglrx-libGL.so after Catalyst 12.2 broke our AGP systems. My config: - Graphics: Radeon HD 2600 XT AGP - CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.6 GHz, 32 bits) - Chipset: VIA KT400 - RAM: 768 MB DDR-SDRAM - Version kernel-3.2.0-36 - Ubuntu version: Xubuntu 12.04.1 (32 bits) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/990436 Title: Xorg with fglrx on ATI HD3650 crashes with Illegal instruction To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/990436/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Noticing this behavior in Bodhi Linux 2.2.0, which is based on Ubuntu 12.04. Bodhi uses Enlightenment e17 window manager/desktop env. I notice that even though the screen saver doesn't leave the screen, the desktop is responsive to mouse and I can choose the menu option to restart Enlightenment, which clears everything up until the next xscreensaver activation.
