[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158293] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel causes xserver to crash

2013-03-30 Thread annnomius
i have also been affected by this bug, but i think it is not from
xserver-xorg-video-intel. instead i believe it is due to some change in the
kernel.
i have a core i5 based system using the integrated graphics, on a p8h67-m pro
motherboard. i am running 12.04.
when an update came out in mid-march, the system would have constant crashes
and hangs upon loggin in to the desktop. the characteristic behavior of the bug
is that there will be graphics glitches, such as flashing, text changing to
gibberish, temporary hangs that may recover--but sometimes don't. however, the
mouse pointer always works.

i tried a few things to help isolate the bug, such as reformating and
reinstalling ubuntu, trying different versions of xserver-xorg-video-intel, and
different versions of the kernel.
the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel does not affect the behavior (at least
compared between the original version in 12.04, which is 2:2-17.0-1ubuntu4.1,
and the updated version, which is 2:2-17.0-1ubuntu4.3).
64 bit vs. 32 bit install of ubuntu 12.04 does not affect the behavior.

what does cause the crashing is using a recent kernel, especially
3.2.0-39-generic, but 3.5.0-23 also has the bad behavior.
in contrast, the original kernel from 12.04 (3.2.0-29-generic) is rock-solid
stable.
kernels in between these 2 seemed hit or miss: up to 3.2.0-32 appear stable,
but later kernels sometimes would hang at boot (at the purple screen after
grub), or hang while running, while other times they would behave ok. however,
3.2.0-39 is terrible.

booting into a virtual terminal (text mode) is stable even with the new
kernels.

i did manage to catch some errors in one of the sessions (either kernel
3.5.0-23 or 3.2.0-39, not sure which) in the xorg.log--here is the
section (these were just after the modelines):

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160201] Re: .........

2013-03-30 Thread Dave Lentz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. We have instructions on
debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1153816] Re: computer freezes and/or report a GPU error message

2013-03-30 Thread Dretal
yes, I read somewhere that there was a problem with the intel video
drivers that Ubuntu reports on (but not Windows even though it occurs
under Windows as well), but I don't know what to do about it, and every
solution I have tried does not work. I am waiting patiently for the new
version of Ubuntu next month, but it hampers my work quite a bit right now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162140] Re: ati adapter not recognised by 3.8.x kernel

2013-03-30 Thread Mlt
Runing apport I get the following:

Fontconfig warning: /etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf, line 9: reading
configurations from ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated.
ERROR: The launchpadlib Python module is not installed. This functionality is
not available.

I have tried apt-get install, but it doesn't exist as a package.

Any ideas?

I also see that changed to xorg - does plymouth rely on xorg?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162223] [NEW] xrandr is showing the wrong device names

2013-03-30 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 dev with x11-xserver-utils 7.7~3ubuntu2. lspci |
grep 'ATI Wrestler' is showing me the following:

Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320]
00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler HDMI Audio
[Radeon HD 6250/6310]

It is an ATI chip with a HDMI port. xrandr is showing the following:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 1600 x 1600
LVDS connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x

DFP1 is my HDMI port but I'm wondering why it isn't showed as HDMI1 or
something else. I'm also wondering why there is CRT1 because I haven't
connected another monitor on my laptop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162140] Re: ati adapter not recognised by 3.8.x kernel

2013-03-30 Thread Dave Lentz
I changed it to xorg so it would gather video information, and also
because I wasn't sure where you were getting 800x600 (plymouth, lightdm
login, and/or after logging in).

Anyway, make sure you have python-launchpadlib package installed.

2013-03-30 Thread Zach Brown
Public bug reported:

Seems to happen fairly randomly. Only started happening after the
upgrade to 13.04, otherwise it never happened in 12.04. It seems more
common after resuming from suspend or hibernate although it sometimes
just happens when the system is inactive for various amounts of time.

No rhyme or reason that I can think of.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 985202] Re: libx11 causes kwin to crash on login (over NX protocol)

2013-03-30 Thread Mike Gabriel
Hi all,

I just tested the new libxrandr2 package on precise with X2Go and nx-
libs 2:3.5.0.20.

The kwin crashes are gone, indeed. So far so good. However, the NX
capability of resizing a non-fullscreen desktop session window is
completely gone now.

Expected behaviour:

o Start a (KDE) session with a geometry of 1024x768 in non-full screen mode
o Resize the NX agent window (i.e. maximize it or drag with the mouse pointer
on one of the window corners
o Expectation: the desktop shell inside resizes all its elements and adapts
to the new desktop size

What happens:

o the desktop shell stubbornly remains at its initial geometry (1024x768 in
this example) and refuses to adapt its
elements to the new desktop session window size

Greets,
Mike (from X2Go upstream)

2013-03-30 Thread Jaufré Aligé
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1155902 ***

** Description changed:

If I install nvidia-experimental-310 driver from packages or from
nvidia, I have a black screen at Launch (before logging in).

At first, when I installed raring, it worked, then I installed
nvidia-experimental-310 and nvidia-cuda-toolkit (for blender).
  After that, black screen.
When I start with open source driver (sudo apt-get remove
nvidia-experimental-310 nvidia-cuda-toolkit), I can log in then.. no unity and
crash if launched.
+
+ I tried to install ccsm and activate Unity Plugin but it disables itself
+ and same thing for OpenGL in General category.

@Nick, you can also use a live boot from cd or usb drive with ubuntu
13.04 on it.

After booting you can see if the problem still occurs and run 'apport-
collect 1153734' as suggested by Dave Lentz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158611] Re: 12.10 New build. No unity or time bar

2013-03-30 Thread Terry Scott
Update:-
Three Ubuntu builds
1) 12.04 Working fine except Evolution which has been updated in 12.10 and is
not backwards compatible.
2) 12.10, updated from a 12.04 build.
3) 12.10 Clean install from .iso
Neither 12.10 builds have a working unity/ task bar. Task bar only visable when
gnome-panel installed and selected at logon.
Checked and installed linux-headers-generic and fglrx and both installed

could you try modifying /etc/init/lightdm.conf to match:

start on ((filesystem
   and runlevel [!06]
   and started dbus
and (stopped plymouth or started plymouth-splash)
   ...

that is, add 'and (stopped plymouth or started plymouth-splash)' there
and see if it changes anything.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162140] Re: ati adapter not recognised by 3.8.x kernel

2013-03-30 Thread Mlt
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected kubuntu raring

** Description changed:

I am running 13.04 on a notebook with an ati Mobility Radeon HD 4200
  Series video adapter.

this has worked fine on previous versions, but is not recognised by
3.8.x kernel and respective modules. Instead video is limited to 800 x
  600.

The limit in resolution affects Plymouth from the Grub prompt.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162366] Re: Repeated GPU lockup error messages

2013-03-30 Thread MarcinWojtalik
The first error message appears 50 seconds after graphical login. Then,
error messages appear every few minutes.

The problem occurs only when logged as a main user (user which is able
to make sudo and gain admin/root privileges). The problem does _not_
occur when logging in as a normal user (user that cannot sudo) or as
guest.

The problem was covered also by Bugs # 983640, 975624 and 1160926 but no
solution is found.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162366] Re: Repeated GPU lockup error messages

2013-03-30 Thread MarcinWojtalik
I do not know if it is important but when I use top in command line it
shows that apport-gtk process uses 100% (or even 100.4%!) of CPU.
However, in System Monitor (graphical) there is no apport-gtk process
listed among active processes.

There is a way to stop these error messages. Just type: sudo kill -9 [process

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158611] Re: 12.10 New build. No unity or time bar

2013-03-30 Thread Terry Scott
Dave,
On the clean install:-
1) From the desktop, no Unity / task bar, ctrl/alt/f1 to login and install
gnome-panel synaptic. Would not let me install fglrx as part of another
package
2) Restarted lightdm in gnome-panel.
3) Using synaptic, installed all updates, which included a refresh of
ubuntu-drivers-common, which include fglrx and a newer kernal. Also installed
the packages I commonly use from the repository
4) Rebooted into ubuntu - no unity / taskbar
5) Using synaptic, re-installed fglrx, installed linux-headers-generic. Using
software-control, installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. Reguired update of
software sources to do this. Still no unity / task bar

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162408] [NEW] little horizontal black lines sporadically appear

2013-03-30 Thread David Monniaux
Public bug reported:

Some little horizontal black lines sometimes appear on the Ubuntu
desktop. They disappear quickly, and there seems no obvious way to force
the event to occur predictably.

The problem occurs with libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental but, unless I'm
mistaken, occurred also with the nonexperimental branch. Furthermore,
I'm running Ubuntu Classic and was not using 3d effects when the problem
occurred (was simply typing text in LibreOffice).
