[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1174491] [NEW] The system freezes upon a certain action
You have been subscribed to a public bug: The system froze twice, and in each case I was doing two things: - Playing music on Rhythmbox - Using Google Chrome to browse a page with a large number of hyperlinks. One of these pages was the Ubuntu One page where you can see your files (I was in a directory with 89 items), the other was: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3atext%3a1999.01.0169%3atext%3dApol. (Notice the great number of links on the top indicating the position in the book.) After moving my mouse through several of these links, the system froze up in both instances. However: - I could continue moving the mouse, even though actions like clicking, or moving the mouse to the left side of the screen to display the launcher had no effect. - More interestingly, the music kept playing. I had to shut the computer off via the power button to restart. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: bot-comment -- The system freezes upon a certain action https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1174491 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 755841]
Since I saw fbcompose mentioned above as a lightweight standalone compositor that can produce tear-free output working around this issue, I'd like to mention I've found another similar compositor that seems to be under more active development: Compton: https://github.com/chjj/compton Its a nice lightweight compositor that doesn't need to replace your window manager or anything, so it can easily be used to work around this issue and get tear-free output. In my testing its been very stable too. Using it with: compton --backend glx --paint-on-overlay --glx-no-stencil --vsync opengl-swc successfully completely removes tearing for me on both my intel machines (including in fullscreen video and with multiple displays), and performs better than using the TearFree xorg option :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/755841 Title: [sandybridge] Graphics tearing when playing video To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/755841/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
I'm just testing this change: sudo mv /usr/bin/skype-binary /usr/share/skype/skype sudo sed -r -i "s,bin/skype-binary,share/skype/skype," /usr/bin/skype It seems to work fine, and unlike before the "Activate" menu item is visible in Unity. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
Hi Gunnar: Yes, I have tried it by installing the packages you just linked to. I needed to add the line 'skype-binary=1' to /etc/xdg/sni-qt.conf to get Skype into a usable state. (Otherwise, as bug #863190 describes there is no way to send a left click to the status icon which prevents re- activating the skype window). I should mention that I'm using the gnome-fallback desktop environment. Could we put the `skype` binary in a different directory (like `/usr/lib/skype/`) to avoid renaming it? Or does Skype locating the other files it needs from the directory of the binary? -- $ cat /etc/xdg/sni-qt.conf [need-activate-action] clementine=1 mumble=1 skype=1 speedcrunch=1 skype-binary=1 $ apt-cache policy skype skype-bin skype: Installed: 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 Candidate: 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 Version table: *** 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 0 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 0 500 http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ raring/partner amd64 Packages skype-bin:i386: Installed: 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 Candidate: 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 Version table: *** 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 0 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 0 500 http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ raring/partner i386 Packages -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-304 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1155327 Title: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1155327/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()
Beware that renaming the skype binary will break it's special configuration sni-qt.conf --- see #863190 (https://bugs.launchpad.net /sni-qt/+bug/863190). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1174043] Re: After dist-upgrade to 13.04 Intuos3 can not drag/paint any more

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1170418] Re: Unity Launcher and window borders missing upon login when using 3 monitors
Per an IRC recommendation: I was told to run a backtrace on compiz and try downgrading to mesa 9.0.3. I have yet to understand the downgrade path - I have yet to test 9.0.3 after the 9.1 upgrade and 3 screen issue began. 9.0.3 worked fine before 9.1 became the latest package. I attempted a backtrace of compiz using the instructions (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCompiz), but I am not sure if it was successful. I added the debug symbols for packages currently used by my system. After launching gdb and setting the logging on and "run" all screens only display the background and cursor. I did not get to run "thread apply all bt full" or "set logging off" commands as the terminal disappeared. I did type these command incase the commands would run, but not sure if the output is what is expected from a backtrace. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173238] Re: Ubuntu starts up to black screen.
I'm seeing the same behavior on an HP 530 laptop (don't have it in front of me at the moment; it's either a 945GM or 940GML chipset according to specs) after an upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04. A workaround I've found is entering the GRUB menu manually and booting with options "quiet splash" removed. Also worth note is that I have removed those options by default by editing /etc/default/grub and running update-grub. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1098561] Re: "Unsupported hardware" watermark appears when FGLRX is installed on 13.04
I upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 and had the unsupported hardware watermark issue with a Radeon 6770 plus fan speed control for the card did not work. The fix in the bug description did not work for me but instead corrupted the fglrx driver. After running the script, X froze and I could not kill it and could not switch to a terminal. Subsequent reboots went straight to a crashed state. I made a backup of the .so file so was able to restore a working system by rebooting into recovery mode and restoring the backup. I then tried to uninstall and reinstall fglrx and that did not get rid of the issues. Finally, I tried uninstalling the Ubuntu version of fglrx and installing version 13.4 from AMD's website and thad did fix both the image overlay and the fan speed control issue. AMD Driver: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx The Install Instructions I Followed: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI Notes about the 13.4 install process. - "Install driver" worked. - "Make Package" option did not work (missing dh). - No need to run amdcccle -- the old xorg.conf worked fine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer-updates in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1098561 Title: "Unsupported hardware" watermark appears when FGLRX is installed on 13.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1098561/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1170174] Re: Freeze when starting up - screen won't turn on, fan runs.
This is different, this is not a gpu lockup but it looks to be something going round in the core following a hotplug event. Memory corruption? Plain old crap code? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1174043] Re: After dist-upgrade to 13.04 Intuos3 can not drag/paint any more
Will do apport again in a moment. Yes, I use KDE, I have gnome installed tho, if you want me to test something. ** Tags added: kubuntu ** Description changed: After dist-upgrade to 13.04 Intuos3 can not drag/paint any more. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1174335] [NEW] Second external monitor (over display port) not working anymore
Public bug reported: Hello I'm using a EliteBook Folio 9470 (Intel QM77 chipset with Intel HD Graphics 4000) and initially installed 13.04 beta2. I used to work with 2 external monitors plugged in (one via VGA and the other one using a HP-DisplayPort-To-HDMI-adapter). Everything worked properly (both displays using 1920x1080 resolution, laptop lid closed); I used this config the last time on 2013-04-26. Some package upgrades were performed in the meantime (I guess including the final release) and this morning when trying to boot in this configuration again, the second external monitor (via display port) is not recognized anymore. The first external monitor (VGA) is still recognized and working as expected. xrandr output: Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3520 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767 LVDS1 connected 1600x900+0+180 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 309mm x 174mm 1600x900 60.1*+ 40.0 1440x900 59.9 1360x768 59.8 60.0 1152x864 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x60060.3 56.2 640x48059.9 VGA1 connected 1920x1080+1600+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 521mm x 293mm 1920x1080 60.0*+ 1680x1050 60.0 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 1440x900 59.9 1280x960 60.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0 832x62474.6 800x60072.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x48072.8 75.0 66.7 60.0 720x40070.1 HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) HDMI2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) (shows only laptop & VGA display) Since my old configuration with both displays is still in ~/.config/monitors.xml, I assume there was a port named 'HDMI3' that is not there anymore: no AUO 0x313e 0x ACI 0x24f3 0x0001cdb6 1920 1080 60 1920 0 normal no no no ACI 0x24f3 0x0001cda5 1920 1080 60 0 0 normal no no yes no AUO 0x313e 0x313e 0x313e 0x 1600 900 60 0 0 normal no no yes no AUO 0x313e 0x 1600 900 60 0 0 normal no no yes ACI 0x24f3 0x0001cdb6 1920 1080 60 1600 0 normal no no no Since it worked on 2013-04-25 I assume some of the packages updated on the next day might be the culprits: grep 2013-04-26 /var/log/dpkg.log | grep 'configure ' 2013-04-26 13:16:50 configure mysql-common:all 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:16:57 configure libmysqlclient18:i386 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:16:57 configure libmysqlclient18:amd64 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:17:02 configure libplymouth2:amd64 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1 2013-04-26 13:17:02 configure plymouth:amd64 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1 2013-04-26 13:17:02 configure mysql-client-core-5.5:amd64 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:17:02 configure mysql-client-5.5:amd64 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:17:02 configure mysql-server-core-5.5:amd64 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:17:02 configure mysql-server-5.5:amd64 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:17:13 configure mysql-server:all 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:17:13 configure libmysqlclient-dev:amd64 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1 2013-04-26 13:17:13 configure liblightdm-gobject-1-0:amd64 1.6.0-0ubuntu2.1 2013-04-26 13:17:13 configure xdiagnose:all 3.5.1 2013-04-26 13:17:13 configure plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text:amd64 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1 2013-04-26 13:17:14 configure plymouth-label:amd64 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1 2013-04-26 13:17:14 configure lightdm:amd64 1.6.0-0ubuntu2.1 2013-04-26 13:17:14 configure plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo:amd64 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1 Maybe a change in lightdm (even though I downgraded to the last version and s

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1174135] Re: Xorg freeze/performance problem
I don't often reboot (maybe once a week or less) so it's possible that this was caused by something that came out a while ago. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1174278] [NEW] REGRESSION: "failed to allocate video resources" with latest fglrx
Public bug reported: Release: Ubuntu 13.04 Version: 2:2.21.6-0ubuntu4 Obtained result: X fails to start with the provided xserver-xorg-video- intel package when using custom built fglrx packages, which is a regression from previous versions. Expected result: X starts correctly with available 3D acceleration. Description: I have a Radeon HD 7670M muxless hybrid graphic card. After upgrading to Raring, X fell back to low-graphics mode (which was half-expected) and the fglrx versions offered in the official Ubuntu repositories didn't work either (resulting in a X segfault). After some testing, I created a package of the latest fglrx drivers as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI , resulting in version 2:12.104. This also resulted on a X failure, although not with a segfault, but with the following error (log attached): [55.455] (EE) fglrx(0): Failed to allocate caches, disabling RENDER acceleration [55.459] (EE) fglrx(0): [intel] Failed to allocate video resources for front buffer 1366x768 at depth 24 Downgrading the xserver-xorg-video-intel package to the Quantal 2:2.20.2-1ubuntu1 version fixes the problem. I have not tried to pinpoint the exact version where the regression occurs; I chose 2.20.2 because it was suggested elsewhere and because 2.20.3 is known to be problematic with fglrx (as per #1068404 ). This has also been reported in Gentoo: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-949372-start-0.html Even though the bug involves fglrx, I am reporting it because it's xserver-xorg-video-intel which seems to blame and I can confirm that earlier versions of the package fix the issue. This same video card also worked well in Quantal, although it did need the packages from andrikos' PPA to behave. >From an usability standpoint, it's also important to note that, as I mentioned before, the Ubuntu-provided fglrx (both regular and -updates) plus the 2:2.21.6-0ubuntu4 version of the intel server resulted in a X segfault for me. The fglrx versions in Andrikos' PPA also segfaulted. I think that bug is unrelated to this one. However, I can check whether the Ubuntu-provided fglrx packages work with this server version, and try to reproduce the other bug and report it separately if you wish (I was dumb enough not to save the log). ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Xorg.0.log with latest fglrx + intel video server 2:2.21.6-0ubuntu4" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1174278/+attachment/3658790/+files/ATI-DEB-Xorg.0.log ** Description changed: Release: Ubuntu 13.04 Version: 2:2.21.6-0ubuntu4 Obtained result: X fails to start with the provided xserver-xorg-video- intel package when using custom built fglrx packages, which is a regression from previous versions. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173491] Re: Boot to "Safe Graphics" after upgrade to Raring
Ahhh, given what you just mentioned, I remembered that I had added a line to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, in order to force light-dm to use the native resoltution of the display: display-setup-script=xrandr --output HDMI2 --primary --mode 1440x900 This was returning a failure code, causing light-dm to terminate. The reason for this, in turn, appears to be that the native resolution is no longer being detected at all! Upon lgging into my graphical session I was greeted by a bad resulution and a very long error dialog box, spanning multiple screens (text attached). I am unable to select the native resolution, which leaves me with cropped display output. I guess this means that the original issue was effectively my fault, although it stems from the underlying issue that the supported modes are no longer being detected correctly. Of course it is still possible that this is due to bad EDID info from the display, but the fact remains that the older kernel is able to drive the display at its native resolution. (The reason the log was missing from my uploads was presumably because I didn't think apport needed to run as root. As it turns out, the light-dm logs are only readable by root. Apport didn't warn me / complain about this, so I assumed everyting was fine.) ** Attachment added: "ModeErrorDialog.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1173491/+attachment/3658734/+files/ModeErrorDialog.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173491 Title: Boot to "Safe Graphics" after upgrade to Raring To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1173491/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173491] Re: Boot to "Safe Graphics" after upgrade to Raring
X is starting cleanly and is shutting down normally less than a second later - this is usually an issue with the session or login manager not loading. Ominously in this case, there are no lightdm logs. Sadly it also means that I can't see the failure, the logs present are expected behaviour (in an abnormal situation). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173491 Title: Boot to "Safe Graphics" after upgrade to Raring To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1173491/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173491] Re: Boot to "Safe Graphics" after upgrade to Raring
An interesting thing I noticed is that, upon login into the VT, ubuntu tells me that there is a "new release" available (13.04) and that I sould use do-release-upgrade to upgrade to it. Perhaps something went wrong in the upgrade process. Actually trying to run do-release-upgrade tells me that there is no new version, though, and dpkg --configure -a does not pick anything up.
You are correct Chris, the original logs were indeed from a working session. I did not consider that they might only cover one session - my apologies, I hope I have not wasted anyone's time! As you can see by the spam :S it looks like I successfully ran apport- collect from the VT... I had to guess a bit with interactive prompts, due to screen clipping, but I don't think I could have done anything too stupid there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
I want to confirm the bug for LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) running a 3.2.0-4-amd64 kernel. - Also complete freeze, even no tty; at least once a day, sometimes 4 times a day. - Workaround: do not start Firefox with a video in a tab waiting to be viewed in a spare moment - Solution: kernel upgrade.
