[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1179311] [NEW] Single click on folder sometimes opens it

2013-05-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The following new behaviour was detected today in Ubuntu 12.04:

In Nautilus
- single left clicking on folders sometimes opens them instead of highlighting
them
- this is reproducible but only randomly

This bug is attributed to Nautilus, but I suspect a deeper problem.

During the main test session, single left clicking on Nautilus in Unity
Launcher just below Dash would hide all open windows. A large image of
the Workspace Switcher icon would flash up on the desktop on top of the
just opened Nautilus window.

A reboot eliminated this Launcher flakiness.

2013-05-13 Thread Tormod Volden
Could you create a new upstream release for savage so I can pull this
to saucy?

Maarten, I will also try to sort out some other issues before I make a
new upstream release. Distros can make git snapshots at any point. I
would like you to commit these patches to Saucy because I want to have
them SRU'ed. I can imagine that SRU'ing a new version is almost
impossible, for bureaucratic reason (I mean, never mind that the current
driver is pretty much useless).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1142733] Re: Nvidia: unknown chipset

2013-05-13 Thread Maarten Lankhorst
I'm still waiting on a mmiotrace from the nvidia driver.

http://people.freedesktop.org/~mlankhorst/mmiotrace-nvidia.sh is a
script that automatically does such a trace if you kill the xserver
first. It will set things up and then you have to start xserver in the
shell it spawns. After that kill the xserver and exit from the subshell,
and it will finish up the trace.

2013-05-13 Thread AG
Yes i confirm.. that the above solution by christopher pijarski (kpijarski)
works
For this solution it is additionally required to install libudev0 from quantal
repo
---
Easy fix method
1. search for 'quantal amd64 xserver-xorg-video-intel' on google or launchpad
and download the package
2. similarly search for 'quantal amd64 libudev0' and download the package
3. install both the packages
4. install fglrx drivers if not done already
5. in terminal issue command 'amdconfig --initial -f' to force-initiliaze
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
6. reboot and enjoy!

 Bug description:
   [Impact]

* Hybrid systems with ATI/intel GPUs using fglrx get a segmentation
fault in X when using 12.10. In stock 12.04.1 these systems were
   working fine.

* This bug represents a severe regression from precise to quantal,
   since is crashing on startup

* The proposed patch updates the driver to version 13.2beta3 of
upstream which seems to resolve this issue

   [Test Case]

* Get an hybrid ATI/intel system.
Install quantal: The system should boot fine
Install the proprietary fglrx package and reboot: The X server
 crashes on startup

   [Regression Potential]

* This solution does not need any change on the intel driver (as a
 previous workaround needed).
* No regressions have been reported so far using this most recent fglrx
upstream, by the people affected by this bug

   ==

After installing the latest fglrx-updates package on Ubuntu 12.10
(fglrx-updates_9.000-0ubuntu3_amd64) I have the same issue that was
present before AMD fixed switchable graphics on PowerXpress 4.0 cards
(such as my HD 6470M coupled with the intel HD Graphics 3000 of my
intel Core i5-2430M). The X server has a segmentation fault and the
   low graphics mode is activated.

WORKAROUND: Follow carefully the instructions here:
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#WORKAROUND

As per Nick Andrik, this is a version regression of xserver-xorg-
video-intel from 2.20.2 (working and in below mentioned PPA) and
   2.20.3. The regression commit is
   http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
   intel/commit/?id=05dcc5f1699ba90fc14c50882e8d4be89bc4a4f9 .

Upstream fglrx has published a new version ( 13.1 ) of the driver
which seems to solve this issue. No need to revert the commit in the
   Intel driver any more.

   ATTENTION:
   1. If you choose the integrated GPU (via Catalyst or via amdconfig
--px-igpu) and your X server crashes on startup, then your are probably
 affected by this bug:
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1088220

   2. If your system includes an old ATI GPU card (Radeon HD 2x00 3x00
4x00) which is not supported any more by fglrx drivers, then probably you
 suffer from this bug:
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1058040
   Subscribe and comment there please.

If the X server loads (so you see no low graphics mode window) but you
get no menu bars, window decorations, etc, then press Ctrl+Shift+T to open
 a terminal, write in there:
   unity --replace
and post a comment with the result.

indicator, the battery life seems to have almost doubled now, but I'll
have to test that to be sure.

Great work guys! I'm really grateful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 944961] Re: Can't enable Right Button Area on Elantech ETPS/2 Clickpad

2013-05-13 Thread Josep Pujadas-Jubany
Work around from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SamsungSeries9 ...

Set the psmouse driver protocol.

 sudo su
 echo options psmouse proto=exps /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe
 reboot

This enables right-clicking, but removes the ability to control other
touchpad features. For example, you cannot disable touch-clicking.

I tried to run the sricpt as you asked but I have some issues... After killing

First, modprobe -r nvidia said: module nvidia not found, so I installed

But then, modprobe nvidia said: Error could not insert nvidia_304: Unknown

Did I miss something to do?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1002788] Re: Using the touchscreen breaks normal device left clicking

2013-05-13 Thread John Faulkner
I'm using an up-to-date Raring install. I have this problem still, which
appears to be tied in some way to operations which tax the hardware in
some way, but I'll get back to that later. What is interesting in that
when the bug occurs, rendering the unity dash and GTK apps unusable with
the touch screen, nautilus is now the one application which continues to
work flawlessly.

I've tried using the xorg-edgers PPA to fix the issue but because it's
an all-or-nothing approach (you have to update every package in the
ppa), it renders Unity completely unstable - appears to be an intel
graphics regression causing massive slowdown whenever transparency or
blurring is used (Unity dash search, logout dialog etc) so I had to ppa-
purge and I can't tell if it fixed the issue.

With regards to the hardware taxing, it appears that the touch screen is
usable on boot up until any operation which seems to take a little
longer than usual. For instance, I have a custom built GTK application
which utilises a GtkToolPalette
(https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/3.4/GtkToolPalette.html) which has a
nice smooth animation for opening the category. Whenever I tap one of
these headers with the touch screen, without fail, I can reproduce this
exact bug. It still happens occasionally with other tasks, but this
happens every time.

I wonder, with it possibly being performance-related, whether or not
this makes it harder for devs to reproduce the error? Either way, I'm
happy to provide any help I can with this bug, just let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774434] Re: mouse pointer disappears in ubuntu (11.04 onwards...)

2013-05-13 Thread David Weiss
Hi, I'm also getting this on 12.04. My machine is a Toshiba Portege R100
with a Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XP4m32 (rev 91) graphics card
running on the xserver-xorg-video-trident driver. The desktop defaults
to Unity 2D, I think because of the limitations of my graphics card.

I'm not running unclutter.

It SEEMS to only happen with DMZ-White.

For me this issue is intermittent. 90% of the time, restarting and THEN
logging out and back in restores the cursor to normal. A simple restart
or log out almost never works (By normal I mean that it doesn't
disappear over icons.) If the cursor is behaving normally, I can
reliably cause the problem by starting Software Center.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1174495] Re: Window Managers instability with r600 radeon and high monitor resolutions

2013-05-13 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
- KWin 4.10.2 is using MSAA visuals with 13.04's mesa. This is unintended and
leads to resource exhaustion which eventually crashes kwin.
+ KWin 4.10.2 and Compiz 0.9.9 are using MSAA visuals with 13.04's mesa.
+ This is unintended and leads to resource exhaustion which eventually crashes
the WM.
This affects all users on the r600 with sufficiently sized displays.

  [Test Case]
- Run Kwin on the r600, if it does not crash after a while we are happy.
+ Run Kwin or Unity with an r600 card, if it does not crash after a while we
are happy.

- [Regression Potential]
+ [Regression Potential]
None, the fix was done by an upstream KWin and Mesa developer plus it has
been incorporated into Fedora for a while plus it was used elsewhere in KWin
already but not in this specific code path.

  [Other Info]
  None.

  --

I think the version of kwin included in 13.04 contains a known bug as
described here:
  https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=315089
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61182

My understanding of the problem is as follows:
  * The Mesa radeon r600 driver recently added support for MSAA GLX visuals
  * Kwin isn't aware of MSAA properties and happens to (incorrectly) pick MSAA
visuals for everything
  * These visuals occupy a large amount of memory when running at high monitor
resolutions
  * Mesa is only capable of mapping 256MB of visuals into CPU address space
at once
  * Kwin's oversize visuals exceeds this limit, resulting in constant crashes

The two radeon systems I have both crash immediately after logging in,
when running with at a resolution of 2560x1440 and desktop effects
enabled. After restarting kwin, a crash can be induced by performing
actions that triggers desktop effects/animations. The resulting
  callstack is attached.

This is similar to bug #1174495 since it is mostly caused by WM, but it
could actually be caused also by other applications so we need to
include a proper fix in Mesa as well.

currently fixed in MESA by commit

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7

2013-05-13 Thread John S. Gruber
@Niccolo

Welcome.

I don't think this old bug report is a way to get this problem solved as
it is already closed. Since you have already looked for a current bug
report and can't find one I'd suggest you file a new one yourself.
Please don't be shy. I'd suggest you use the approach at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting since `ubuntu-bug xorg` will collect
a lot of pertinent information automatically. That page has lots of
useful advice.

WRT your question about viewing your xorg log files yourself, I would
would suggest starting gedit and navigate to /var/log/ and the files you
want to examine. askubuntu.com is great for getting answers to this kind
of question, by the way. Here on Launchpad is the best place to get bugs
worked on.

@Jorge

The message about the quit signal is just like the ones that occurred
with this sort of bug. It might be good to see if there is an error in
the still older xorg log.

@Both

I think closed bugs don't appear on developers' lists so a new bug
report is much better, as Steve Langasek suggested to someone above. In
addition gdm was involved in this old bug but now lightdm is used for
the sign on screen so this really is a brand new bug even though there
are probably events in common and the symptoms are the same.

If you are both having the same problem on Precise perhaps one of you
can file the bug and the other can mark it as affecting him as well .
You both should attach the logs produced by `ubuntu-bug xorg` to help
move the bug toward triaging.

Thanks.

we should definitely build and distribute it for raring ringtail too...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1179583] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2013-05-13 Thread MarkWayne
Public bug reported:

The system freezes under a specific but not consistent circumstance.

System freeze means: complete lock-up except for mouse movement (only,
no response to mouse-button); windows cannot be opened or closed,
console cannot be changed (via ctrl-alt-fN), etc.

The specific circumstance (but not consistent, meaning that it doesn't
always happen but only happens during) is linking a URL from Thunderbird
12.0 to Firefox 20.0. The link is accessed (via mouse-button click), no
tab opens in Firefox, with the system freezing immediately. In other
words, the response of the system to linking the URL is the freeze.

Thank you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1179588] [NEW] Unity UI stops working intermittently

2013-05-13 Thread Eli Collins
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 64-bit on a Thinkpad W510, with the
nvidia-current driver (v304.88), and Compiz. I see this problem with
both Unity and Unity 2D. A couple of times a day the UI will stop
working, I can move the mouse cursor but can't click on anything (eg no
drag icon appears when I mouse over a window), eventually (after a
while) it continues to work. Sometimes logging out or rebooting fixes
the issue. The problem only occurs when using the laptop display. If I
boot using an external display I never see the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1179656] [NEW] Elantech Touchpad, AreaBottomEdge = parameter not work completly

2013-05-13 Thread Mattia Donato
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop Asus S65CM with a large Elantech Touchpad. Please
google it and see the touchpad.

First problem: the touchpad is not automatically configured in a correct way.
So I wrote a script to correct the parameters of synclient as enclosed.
In this way, it work quite well but still a little but annoying bug.
The parameter AreaBottomEdge = 1800 is used to reducting the Area of
sensibility of the Touchpad. This is true about the movements but it is not
true about the fingers counting. For example, if I let one my finger in the
area of the left button, which is suppose to be a death-area, outside
AreaBottom, it suppose to not be considered. But actually if I put also a
finger to move the curson in central zone the touchpad recognize it as
TwoFingers, so is blocking the cursor.
If think internally is a problem of button counting which is performed before
than the AreaBottom constrain.

Parameter settings:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1083032] Re: Video driver not working for Savage chipset

2013-05-13 Thread Tormod Volden
Maarten, by the way, I do intend to package a snapshot for Debian soon,
so you can just sync it to Saucy later (I don't think the single Ubuntu
patch for PCI instead of AGP is needed any longer). But before that, it
would simplify SRU if the above patch has been wetted in Saucy.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1178846] Re: 1002:6779 xorg hangs randomly with Radeon HD 7450A

2013-05-13 Thread schaefi
Here some additional information

1. Bios Versions:
Running this on the current (old, without BIOS updates) system gives:

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
8,10
09/25/12

2. Information with ARandR
Installing ARandR shows the system automatic configuration:
Output: DisplayPort-1
Resolution: 1920x1080

It seems that by lowering the resolution to e.g. 1680 x 1050 xorg takes
much longer to freeze

3. Attempt with fglrx-amdcccle
Installing fglrx-amdcccle leads the system to chose another automatic
configuration
Output: DFP1
Resolution: 1920x1080

In the lower right side of the windows appears a message with AMD unsupported
hardware.
xorg freezes quite quickly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1162408] Re: little horizontal black lines sporadically appear

2013-05-13 Thread v-max
I have the same problem with my 900x3e. The first line of the screen is white,
also when I reboot. When I completly shut down the laptop the line goes away
for a few minutes and then comes back.
When xubuntu is fully booted the line is only about 1/5 of full screen width,
starting left.

It also happens once to me that I saw a line at about 200 pixels from
top while surfing the web. But this line disappeared after a few
minutes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1178846] Re: 1002:6779 xorg hangs randomly with Radeon HD 7450A

2013-05-13 Thread schaefi

160ez.
I looked myself for updates under this link:

There is no BIOS update.
The updates on graphics driver are only relevant for Windows 8 and not for
Linux.
So there is nothing to do.

If I have understood something wrong, please let me know.
I very much appreciate your help.

Single clicking to make a VISA payment on my bank site actually double

Fortunately, the system asked me if I really wanted to do that and
declined.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168188] Re: black screen on lenovo g580 and ubuntu 13.04

2013-05-13 Thread DUEDAL
I found :
http://askubuntu.com/questions/79983/screen-brightness-resets-to-minimum-after-every-reboot

The file /etc/rc.local add before line *exit 0*:

*echo 5 /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
exit 0 *

Where *5* is the brightness level from 0 to 10

In fact, you have to set your brightness as you want. Then you open the
file :

*/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/*actual_brightness

And you replace the 5 with the number you will find in actual_brightness

You must open rc.local as root : so : you open a term : CTRL+ALT+T

Then you type : sudo nautilus

you will find the file rc.local in subdirectory etc

It was fine for me. Hope you will success

Good luck,

If any problem, send a mail

As per your Bug Description it notes:

What does the sticker on your computer say your model is?

There is no BIOS update.

This depends on when you bought your computer, did it initially come
with Windows 8, Windows 7, or something else?

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168188] Re: black screen on lenovo g580 and ubuntu 13.04

2013-05-13 Thread Bill Kendrick
FYI, I noticed that if I use the Fn+F4 key on my laptop (which is the
'lower screen brightness' function key) and drop it to 0% (as reported
by a screen brightness overlay in KDE, if I'm logged in), my backlight
goes completely off, to the point that I cannot see anything on the
screen (similar to the problem I have when I boot up without an external
monitor plugged in). Pressing Fn+F5 ('raise screen brightness'), it
comes back on, of course.

So the echo ###
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness-in-/etc/rc.local trick
sounds like it will work. I'll test it later today, and report back.

It's already fixed in udev/kernel, because udev/kernel can handle
keycodes over 255. However, X11 can't (MICMUTE is out of range), we have
to remap it to something that X11 can use. We've used F21-23 before, so
I assumed that was the best place to put it. I'm open to suggestions.

Currently symbols/inet(evdev) is used for all keyboards, so all of them would

What keyboards have F20? We're already using F21-23 for the touchpad
on/off/toggle buttons, so there is a precedent for this.

Sun keyboards in the 80's had 35 F-keys - since around 1990 many of those were
relabeled - the left side keys to the SunStop, SunProps, etc and the right side
to the numeric keypad. Those were only found on the old Sun 4 and older
systems, not any UltraSPARC, x86 or AMD64 systems. I think other Unix
workstations from the era had similarly large amounts of F keys for the
CAD/CAM applications of the time, but those fell out of use over the years.

Seems like not much going on here. No solution yet?

Ok someone suggessted kernel 3.8.8 which I haven't tried. But since I've
tried all kernel 3.2.x up to 3.6.x, I'm a bit reluctant to try 3.8.8.
Can someone else confirm this kernel version fixes this bug?
