[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1283938] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 blank screen after wakeup from sleep

2014-05-06 Thread Casey Earnshaw
Hello again

I did a dist-upgrade last night and it seems to have fixed the issue,
although I've only had time to check it twice today before I had to rush
off to work!

Thank you very much!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1307701] Re: xserver mouse pointer emulation from touch breaks with QML app.

2014-05-06 Thread Daniel d'Andrada
Took the liberty of correcting the bug title as unity does keep getting
touch events. It's the xserver mouse pointer emulation from touch events
that breaks badly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1307009] Re: second screen gets disconnectded after suspend

2014-05-06 Thread Wybo Dekker
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu

** Description changed:

After my PC having been suspended and waked up, my second screen appears to
be disconnected, and as far as I can see, the only way to get out is a reboot.
My first screen is VGA1, the second is HDMI1.
Although second screen is black, and windows can not be moved to it, the
mouse pointer can. My horizontal panel appears to be stretched over both
display, with its right half being invisible. However, I /can/ use the
unvisible Action Button in the right hand corner of the second screen, and
reboot my PC from there! (The popup window with the action menu appears in the
right hand corner of my first screen)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-05-06 Thread Nicolas-mailhot-laposte
(In reply to comment #66)

Regarding the voting, is there generic popular Linux-oriented site in
 France? Like slashdot.org or smth...

There is a popular Linux-oriented site in France (linuxfr.org) and the
final ajustments of this layout were done after discussion on this site.

I realise there is a vocal minority that does not like some of those choices but
1. the other alternatives used in the ancestors of this layout generated a lot
more hate mail
2. because I knew there was no choice everyone would like spacebar layout is
modular (and I'm the person who modularized it as part of the creation of this
layout). People can choose the previous behaviour if they want and a few other
possibilities were added as part of the modularization
3. so far no one proposed any better option appart from removing symbols which
are necessary to write proper French (arguably proper French is not the same as
C code). It's a lot easier to clamor for removal of the bits you do not use
than to try to design a general-purpose solution without cutting corners

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1301839] Re: AMD Radeon HD 8670A/8670M/8690M[1002:6660] Low-graphic mode with Trusty

2014-05-06 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
TEST CASE:
1. Install 14.04 on 201305-13641
2. Boot to make sure this issue exist.
3. Reboot with nomodeset parameter in grub, enable proposed, upgrade.
4. Reboot without nomodeset parameter in grub

VERIFICATION DONE

Expected result:
* You won't be asked to enter the low-graphic mode after step 4

Actual result:
* Display works fine after step 4 (with internal error reported on Xorg, look
into the log, I think Radeon driver is the cause)
[29.628] (EE) RADEON(G0): [XvMC] Failed to initialize extension.

For this bug itself, I think it has been fixed. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1307701] Re: xserver mouse pointer emulation from touch breaks with QML app.

2014-05-06 Thread Daniel d'Andrada
Attaching detailed xserver log. The following steps were taken:

1- sudo restart lightdm (to restart the X server. so that de have a clean slate)
2- run a very simple qml app with qmlscene
3- tapped on that qmlscene window (touch id 1)
4- tapped on the desktop area (nautilus) (touch id 2)
5- sudo stop lightdm

From the logs you can see that no pointer emulation was done for touch
id 2 because xserver still thinks that touch id 1 is active.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1316567] [NEW] After upegrade Ubuntu dont start: no resolution available

2014-05-06 Thread pwrdesc
Public bug reported:

I have a 16/10 17inch screen and a graphic card nVidia GeForce. Starting UBUNTU
14.04 after upgrade, the process abort with a little window saying Correct
screen resolution not found (or something like that). With UBUNTU 13.10 I used
a 1400x900 screen size.
Hopefully I can use KUBUNTU 14.04 but with a 1280x1024 resolution wich is wrong
for a wide screen.
How can I restart UBUNTU ?

daniels, when a touch reaches xserver, it sends touch events to both clientX
and clientY
daniels dandrader: yes, events are delivered separately thorough master and
slaves - i'd recommend not using slaves for anything at all
dandrader daniels, but I believe it should send only to clientY, and only
once clientY rejects the touch sequence should clientX finally start receiving
the touch events (replayed), right?
daniels dandrader: if both clients were listening on a master device, then
you'd be right
dandrader daniels, hmm got it. so what I'm seeing is the expected behavior
then and I should modify clientX to select events on AllMasterDevices instead
of on slaveDevice1
 daniels, is that it?
daniels dandrader: exactly

So we have two problems here:
1- touch ownership mechanics won't work in our situation as Qt is talking
directly to the slave devices whereas unity7 is talking to the master devices.
2- the xserver bug described in my previous comments where it gets confused
with such situation and ends up with a borked internal state which ruins mouse
pointer emulation

So if we could avoid the situation in item 1 (by changing either Qt or
unity7/Open Input Fw Grail code) we might (have to try it out to see)
circumvent the bug in item 2.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1315156] Re: nvidia-331 selected but nouveau loads

2014-05-06 Thread Rebecca Palmer
The NVRM log messages stopped after reinstalling nvidia-331, but the
system continued to use nouveau, and hence to crash (bug 1243557).

 modified.conffile..etc.modprobe.d.nvidia.331.hybrid.conf: [deleted]

I don't know how that (which blacklists nouveau) came to be missing, but
purging and re-installing nvidia-331 put it back but didn't stop nouveau
loading.

2014-05-06 Thread Daniel d'Andrada
Is there a specific reason for calling XISelectEvents() for each

Would have to dig into Qt code to tell that. But my guess is that
because it exposes QTouchDevice objects to applications. For every
QTouchEvent you can get the QTouchDevice from where it came from. But
it might be that it could work with XIAllMasterDevices just as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1307701] Re: xserver mouse pointer emulation from touch breaks with QML app.

2014-05-06 Thread Stephen M. Webb
The code in Qt that subscribes to slave device events is the explicit
tablet-handling code. Checking the code, the touchscreen on my Dell XT2
is being treated as a tablet by the Qt code because it supports a stylus
mode on one of its alternate devices.

It sounds like the bug is in the Qt XCB QPA code, which explains why it
only started occuring in QML apps after the switch to Qt 5.2.

I think the XIDeviceEvent.sourceid would tell you from which device it
originates. The XIDeviceEvent.deviceid member would be set to the
master device, which might break things in a straight conversion.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013881]

2014-05-06 Thread Dominique Meeùs
(In reply to comment #69)
…
Regarding the voting, is there generic popular Linux-oriented site in

There is a popular Linux-oriented site in France (linuxfr.org) and the
final ajustments of this layout were done after discussion on this site.

I realise there is a vocal minority that does not like some of those choices

A site like linuxfr.org may well be a vocal minority in itself. Nothing proves
that linuxfr.org is representative of ordinary users. And even on linuxfr.org I
have seen posts saying where is my CRTL-R gone? or my keyboard is broken
since some new version of Ubuntu.
In a way, suppressing one of the customary CTRL keys is intrinsically a
minority point of view.
[Furthermore, the French layout for the Belgian keyboard depends on the French
layout for the French keyboard. I do not see why a discussion on linuxfr.org
should decide that Belgians have no use of right CTRL.]

 but
 1. the other alternatives used in the ancestors of this layout generated a
 lot more hate mail

I doubt having a right CTRL key ever generated hate mail. That hate mail
was about other questions.

 2. because I knew there was no choice everyone would like spacebar layout is
modular (and I'm the person who modularized it as part of the creation of
this layout). People can choose the previous behaviour if they want and a
few other possibilities were added as part of the modularization

We are not here discussing space bar, but right CTRL. Is right CTRL
modular? Is there an option easily accessible to the ordinary user to
restore right CTRL?

 3. so far no one proposed any better option appart from removing symbols
which are necessary to write proper French (arguably proper French is not
the same as C code). It's a lot easier to clamor for removal of the bits you
do not use than to try to design a general-purpose solution without cutting
 corners

The clamor is not against proper French of for removal of anything.
Furthermore, how could an ordinary user try to design a solution? The user
wants a common PC keyboard with CTRL keys, without having to write the code
himself. The clamor is: do what you can to allow writing proper French —and
thank you for your trying to do it— but leave the right CTRL.
---
If no agreement can be reached, would it be possible to have the old layout
accessible, even under another name? I do not know how many variants are
allowed, by design, or by freedesktop conventions. Of course a new variant
would be useless if it didn’t appear in the choices offered to an ordinary user
by the most popular GNU Linux distributions.

Regarding the voting, is there generic popular Linux-oriented site in
  France? Like slashdot.org or smth...

There is a popular Linux-oriented site in France (linuxfr.org) and the
final ajustments of this layout were done after discussion on this site.

But this has the same pitfall as any volunteered survey, it isn't any
kind of representative. I for example myself barely ever read a linuxfr
article, and wouldn't participate or even see a survey there. That
doesn't mean I'm not a French fr/oss user :)

Also note that people suffering from the situations are a lot more
likely to do something and speak their mind than people perfectly happy
with the situation. So probably discussing a problem is likely to
only include opinion from people not happy with the current state, and
people closely involved.

I realise there is a vocal minority that does not like some of those choices
 but

Just to be fair, I see *no one* else here arguing towards keeping right
Ctrl Level5 modifier -- but sure, as I state above, people happy with it
won't see the discussion or care, so it may be biased.

 1. the other alternatives used in the ancestors of this layout generated a
 lot more hate mail

If it broke people's apps (or apps broke with it, I don't care who's
fault it is), I surely can understand people being angry. But
similarly, since the change from this report broke people's right Ctrl
key, I can understand they get angry.

 2. because I knew there was no choice everyone would like spacebar layout is
modular (and I'm the person who modularized it as part of the creation of
this layout). People can choose the previous behaviour if they want and a
few other possibilities were added as part of the modularization

And we thank you for your work. But I don't think it's realistic to
think everyone can choose the previous behavior if it means editing
the keymap. I already said it, but it took me quite some time to find
what caused my right Ctrl key to no longer work and fix it, and I think
it's fair to consider myself a quite advanced user.

If really reverting the addition of Level5 is not an option (but see
below), please add an alternative layout.

 3. so far no one proposed any better option appart from removing symbols
which are necessary to write proper French (arguably proper French is not
 the same as C code).

The change in this particular report did not add or remove any symbol,
it only moved one to Level5 because some apps couldn't handle
CtrlSpace with this layout. And as I said earlier, most of the
incriminated apps (at least that I know of) don't even use CtrlSpace
anymore, rendering the change moot for them.

And even if we wanted to please those apps, we mayb be able to without
adding a new modifier (Level5) and a key for it -- again, see (comment
#46).

Also note that event though I admittedly don't use short-nbsp (I'm
afraid I don't know the rules where this one should be used in French
typography), I'm an heavy user of nbsp everywhere French typography
tells me to do it. So no, I don't want to remove anything, don't worry
-- but I'd like my right Ctrl key back :)

It's a lot easier to clamor for removal of the bits you
do not use than to try to design a general-purpose solution without cutting
 corners

It sure is, but although my nearly non-existent knowledge of keymaps may
make my message somewhat irrelevant (e.g. I don't know how to apply my
ideas), I investigated possible solutions in comment #46 -- although no
one followed up on those.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1307701] Re: xserver mouse pointer emulation from touch breaks with QML app.

2014-05-06 Thread Alberto Milone
@Stephen: I guess that means that your device passes the following
check:

if (tabletData.valuatorInfo.contains(QXcbAtom::AbsX)
 tabletData.valuatorInfo.contains(QXcbAtom::AbsY)
 tabletData.valuatorInfo.contains(QXcbAtom::AbsPressure))

which you can check using xinput list-props $device_id or simply using
evtest.

I have a non-tablet and a tablet, they are both affected by the same
problem, except that fixing the tablet use case will probably take a
little more work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1309153] Re: NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!

2014-05-06 Thread Jennifer Cash
I updated to Ubuntu 14.04 and I still have the same symptoms and error
messages as before. I also want to note that I started having these
symptoms while using 12.04 (but only since about January, I ran 12.04 up
to that point with no issues).

I'm still working on the BIOS update issue.

I've just rebuilt Qt with a partial fix which only covers the non-
tablet test case, and I'm glad to report that it solves the problem.

The old layout was never removed and kept its historical name (fr latin9)

No, we are speaking here of fr/oss, but before it got right Ctrl as
level5 modifier (what this bug end up changing).

I bet everyone complaining here was very happy with fr/oss before this
Level5 modifier -- at least I was, this map has so everything useful

And even if we wanted to please those apps, we mayb be able to without
adding a new modifier (Level5) and a key for it -- again, see (comment #46).

I'm pretty sure some of the other spacebar configurations available as
xkb options do not require level5. They are not the default for fr(oss)
because without level5 it is too easy to type a nbspc by mistake and
random nbspc everywhere breaks lots of things (as reported by fr latin9
users).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1283938] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 blank screen after wakeup from sleep

2014-05-06 Thread Casey Earnshaw
Yes, that's true, sorry false alarm from me, but it really truly did
work this morning, but as soon as I got home same issue, I wish I knew
what I did right. I'm afraid I'm still very much a novice when it comes
to Linux, only did the switch a few months ago I don't know how to do an
information copy paste like others in this, but if I can get it to work
and it will help then I am more than happy to do so if it helps, I'll
need to know the commands though.

Thanks guys, and very best of luck with the fix! x

@Casey Maybe you can dive into your /var/log directory. If you are that
novice you can make use of a graphical log viewer that you can install
from the ubuntu software centre. One or two logs where you can start is
/var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.xxx or even /var/log/boot to see if
there was something different since you booted ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1019312] Re: xset -dpms does not disable power saving

2014-05-06 Thread Prajna
Seems this bug still persists in 14.04

I use 'xset dpms 0 0 1200 -dpms s off s noblank s noexpose' in my
.profile but something keeps switching dpms back on.

Even if I use xset -dpms in a teminal something re-enables it.

I am also suffering from having to hit a key every 10 mins or so when
watching a video in vlc.

xset - q reports:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 600Suspend: 900Off: 1200
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

shortly after having issued xset -dpms.

After no keyboard activity for some minutes a notification is displayed,
near the bottom of the screen, showing a brightness setting (a screen
icon, a 'progress bar' and a percentage) which usually begins at 60%
followed some minutes later by one showing 40% then later 0%. Despite
the notification the screen does not dim but does eventually blank. The
function keys (F6 and F7) do work to adjust the screen brightness,
though no notification is displayed. It used to be that a brightness
notification (different format, a sun icon and a thinner 'progress bar')
was displayed on the upper-right of the screen.

I don't have xsreensaver.

My power setting in the control centre is set to suspend after 30 mins
of inactivity when on battery and not suspend when plugged in.

In Brightness settings I have full brightness, dim unchecked and blank
set to never.

I'm running kubuntu 14.04 on a Toshiba NB-200.

Some additional comments:

dpms gets reactivated whether I am plugged in or running on battery.

There have been occasions when dpms has not been reactivated and I can
watch a full movie without being bothered by the dpms notifications,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1316873] [NEW] Left mouse button stops working

2014-05-06 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

This problem has plagued me for a few years across different laptops
and Ubuntu versions. Current I am experiencing this on a Dell Inspiron
15z running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

It typically starts after I have used the chat or call feature in gmail,
by clicking on the phone icon in the left chat margin. I am a Firefox
user and have not tested this with chrome etc. It has not happened if i
dont install google-talkplugin so it is quite possible that the plugin
is to blame.

Symptom
===
The left mouse button on all attached mice - USB , Trackpad and touch - will
not do anything however the right mouse button continues to work. This
happens to all applications and also to the desktop. The keyboard continues to
function as normal.

When this occurs , my solution is to Alt-F4 close all windows and log
out of the X session. When I re-login the left mouse button works as
normal.

This is an irritant and work disruptor as I have to save all browser and
desktop applications to safe state before I logout to reset the mouse. I will
appreciate any soltion or workaround.

ProblemType: Bug

abxcsdwefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

ABCXSDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

ABCXSDWEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

So I can't log in my Administration section without onscreen keyboard.
