[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1390016] [NEW] [BDW] GPU hang with xvideo

2014-11-06 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Recoverable GPU hang on Broadwell when playing video, triggered at least by
trying some Unity UI scaling values.

[Test Case]
gst-launch-1.0 videotestsrc pattern=snow !
'video/x-raw,format=UYVY,width=640,height=360' ! xvimagesink

the video will pause, then resume with varied success. Next attempt will
fail.

[Regression Potential]
Everything seems to work after the upstream patch.

Playing the Ubuntu welcome video causes GPU hangs on BDW. It's launched
with

gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///UbuntuBoot.ogv video-

not the latest ones (as on Wilson Beach).

Tested on ubuntu 14.10 with:

kernel v3.17-rc2
libdrm 2.4.56
mesa 10.2.6
xdrv 2.99.914

same with an earlier stack on ubuntu 14.04..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1369113] Re: Steam game began crashing 2014-09-12 (cross-post Source bugtracker)

2014-11-06 Thread zebul666
only the spamming issue I guess.

However I have tried the oibaf ppa that provides a complete more on the edge
graphic stack.
It worked, at least a little better as I was able to play at least 2 hours
without a freeze

see https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers
you can easily revert to default graphic driver if needed as explained

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1369113] Re: Steam game began crashing 2014-09-12 (cross-post Source bugtracker)

2014-11-06 Thread Adam Colligan
I'm a little hesitant when it comes to the libxext installation from
Vivid; is there some way to figure out if this is going to break my
package dependencies?

I'm currently on Edgers. When I try to install the new libxext6, the
version is higher than the one required by my current libxext-dev. Now,
I can remove my current libxext-dev, but that would also entail removing
these packages:

libatk-bridge2.0-dev libatspi2.0-dev libcairo2-dev libcanberra-gtk3-dev
libgl1-mesa-dev libglu1-mesa-dev libgtk-3-dev libpango1.0-dev libqt4
-opengl-dev libxcomposite-dev libxext-dev libxi-dev libxinerama-dev
libxrandr-dev libxtst-dev .

My concern is that there might be a cascading problem if I put in the
new libxext6 and libxext-dev from Vivid and then try to reinstall all of
those other packages. I don't want to actually move off of Trusty right
now.

Is there either (1) a more surgical way to get the 1.3.3.1 fix for error
spamming; or (2) a way to check whether my whole package system will be
in tact if I do this big removal and replacement?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1389904] Re: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen

2014-11-06 Thread Walter Lapchynski
It appears that this affects a very specific chip. That being said, I
can't do much to help diagnose this. With that in mind, it would be
useful to find out exactly what conditions are required for this to
occur. Is it only that particular package? It should be tested across
different OS versions and flavors. Also, what other chips this may apply
to. It's clearly a regression of some kind because it did work, but I
can't push this upstream without adequate information.

I could test it on my UbuntuStudio partition, but if it has the same
problem, I will have no bootable partition on that machine.

One other piece of evidence regarding it, is that the Lubuntu 14.10 live

Note from your bootlog that you have some apparmor policy errors:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/189391868/BootLog.txt

Your /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home file should be owned by root with
group root and permissions 0644.

You may need to customize the contents some, here's mine:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1390060] Re: system running on low graphic mode

2014-11-06 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

2014-11-06 Thread Brian Murray
Can you not switch to a virtual terminal? If so then you should be able
to install the old version of the package (provided you have a network
connection) via a command like sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-
intel=2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1. The old version of the .deb might also
exist in /var/cache/apt/archives in which case you could install it with
dpkg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1365490] Re: ubuntu 12.04.5 broken on VMware

2014-11-06 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Thomas, or anyone else affected,

Accepted mesa-lts-trusty into precise-proposed. The package will build
now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa-lts-
trusty/10.1.3-0ubuntu0.2~precise1 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388577] Re: xrandr --rotate rotates only lower half the screen

2014-11-06 Thread David
Just chiming in. Same problem on Yoga with intel graphics, running
gnome3. I can invert the built in screen fine although when I have an
external display plugged in as well. Also after inverting I get an
extra mouse pointer pointing down right below the functioning pointer.

That sounds like an excellent idea to try.

Unfortunately, before you mentioned it in this e-mail, I didn't know
such a thing existed.

Can you point me at some documentation where I can learn about it (I
don't mind reading manuals). And will virtual terminals use my
specified keyboard layout (English Dvorak)?

In the past, command-line 'rescue' utilities have had this annoying
habit of 'dumping' me in a qwerty keyboard layout, and I don't type
qwerty. Having to type qwerty on a dvorak keyboard with dvorak key
arrangement is a nightmare.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388577] Re: xrandr --rotate rotates only lower half the screen

2014-11-06 Thread Dark Dragon
I made an extra bug for the inverted mouse pointer (please also confirm there):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1388596

But as you have the same problems, maybe these two bugs are related?

** Description changed:

When I run xrandr --output LVDS1 --rotate inverted while I am in the
state normal, it rotates only lower half of the screen (see attached
screenshot). This is only the case from normal to inverted. All other
  combinations work as intended.

- I use Ubuntu 14.10 with intel graphics card.
+ I use Ubuntu 14.10 with intel graphics card (Lenovo Twist S230u).

different OS versions and flavors. Also, what other chips this may apply

Walter:

Please take into consideration, that while this fix is published, every
user of an affected machine will have their system rendered un-bootable,
even if they specify a prior kernel level. And this will be observed,
to their great dismay, on trying to reboot after applying system
updates, with the only solution available to them, being to re-install
the system, and don't apply updates.

As such, this is a very serious problem.

I'm sure it only affects certain machines, since I have applied the same
update to my current primary machine (which used newer Intel graphics,
using the same package), and there was no problem.

If there were a way for the fix to be temporarily withdrawn from service
until this problem is resolved, it might save a lot of people a lot of
problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 998546] Re: 0408:3003 [Packard Bell oneTwo (PW.U6C)] Touch-screen did work on 11.04 but no longer works on 12.04

2014-11-06 Thread Peter Hutterer
The device wasn't supported by the kernel before the patch, so it was
running in mouse emulation mode. That is usually a firmware feature, we
often see this on new touchpads before we add support and switch them to
raw mode. To userspace (i.e. X.Org) it looked like a mouse device, the
gesture support that betzi pointed out in Comment #2 (double click,
right click, ...) was implemented in the firmware and looked like normal
mouse buttons to us.

With the new kernel, the device is now switched to raw mode, i.e. we get
the correct coordinates and we get multitouch features. evdev has
supported MT since 2012 or so. What it doesn't do though is gestures
though, so those got lost and now rely on the client stack. evdev does
some right button emulation, but that's for legacy touchscreens, not
true multitouch screens.

If you want this bug closed you need to either support the gestures in
the client stack, or drop the patch that _enabled_ the device in the
kernel so it goes back to firmware emulation mode. That is of course
assuming that the gestures are the issue here, I've asked for more
clarification. If the device doesn't work at all, it's a kernel issue
but the fdo bug suggests that kernel 3.15 works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1386620] Re: re-enable rotation for the intel driver in optimus mode

2014-11-06 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Maarten, or anyone else affected,

Accepted xserver-xorg-video-intel into trusty-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-intel/2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.3 in a few hours, and then
in the -proposed repository.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1390016] Re: [BDW] GPU hang with xvideo

2014-11-06 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Timo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted xserver-xorg-video-intel into trusty-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-intel/2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.3 in a few hours, and then
in the -proposed repository.

Thank you in
advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 998546] Re: 0408:3003 [Packard Bell oneTwo (PW.U6C)] Touch-screen did work on 11.04 but no longer works on 12.04

2014-11-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Peter Hutterer, thanks for the quick follow up, and discussion. Just to
clarify, the scope of this report is only the original reporter Paddy
Landau, whose hardware info is 0408:3003 (not Betzi or anyone else).

Despite this, as per Paddy Landau's previous comments, this has been
reproducible since 3.2.x Ubuntu kernel series through 3.16 (largely
close to mainline/upstream).

From my limited understanding, a commit set landed in 3.2.x to
transition to the use of usbhid. This was to standardize development,
but in the process broke functionality for some devices, with the intent
of circling back on these and bringing their code up to standard.

Hence, would the transition to usbhid stopping functionality be enough
information to conclude this is a kernel issue, or would it be best to
have Paddy Landau provide a log to make this more conclusive?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1390016] Re: [BDW] GPU hang with xvideo

2014-11-06 Thread Yu Ning
I verified on trusty, with xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.3 installed the video can be played through xvideo
successfully, no GPU hanging.

So I believe the issue is properly fixed in trusty. I'll update the
tags.
