[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1924910] [NEW] Massive screen flashing artefacts - tearing

2021-04-18 Thread Andrea
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 20.10 x64 frequently updated.

I noticed in the last week that after a while there are huge screen
artefacts, that I would describe as flashing. Squares of screen flash,
normally linked to widgets on screen.

E.g.: the app bars on the left can start flashing blue, or parts of editors.
I noticed it more in firefox, made worse by scrolling.
VirtualBox is severely affected too.
VS Code.

It does not happen immediately and the feeling I get is that it starts
happening when there is a lot on screen. For example has not happened at
all in this session, but I have done little or nothing screen-heavy.

The issue gets worse, then might settle down for a while.

Screenshot of damaged application bar.
See the blue square below VLC and compare with the other image.

There should be the zoom icon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1744372] Re: gparted does not start - Unit -.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway.

2018-06-30 Thread Andrea
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1652282 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1652282

This also affects me, running on X. When I run
  gparted
I get prompted to insert the password, then the terminal says
Unit -.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway.
and it just hangs there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1205643] Re: VIA P4M800 graphics broken in Lubuntu/Xubuntu Saucy & Trusty

2013-12-07 Thread Andrea
Hallo! Same bug and same computer (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L7320).
I'd like to install Lubuntu 13.10 on this machine but, since I'm not able to do
it, I've tried also with Ubuntu 12.04 and other 'flavours'.

Lubuntu and Xubuntu 13.10 have the same problem of this description (it
freezes during installation), Ubuntu gives an unusuable interface
(without pointer, strange colours etc.). The only one I was able to use
on this machine has been the liveCD of Kubuntu 12.04. Once installed,
also this doesn't work anymore (I had to force xorg to use vesa driver
creating a xorg.conf file, but the result is a poor graphic result). The
liveCD seems to have, strangely, better result.

It's the first message for me here, so excuse me if I have been
redundant or OT, but I've found strange this behaviour and maybe it
could be useful - or at least I hope it!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1205643] Re: VIA P4M800 graphics broken in Lubuntu/Xubuntu Saucy & Trusty

2014-01-04 Thread Andrea
Hi to Everybody!

Please, don't give up on this point. My Company has accepted my proposal
to switch all computers to Lubuntu, after a test period in order to
understand if all employees can use it. You can imagine, they are a
little bit suspicious!

So, on a total of 21 Pcs (most of them with XP... so, it's the right
moment to change), I've installed on 3 desktop Pcs Saucy, and now they
are working fine from one month (after another month passed to solve a
problem with another graphic card - Nvidia Riva).

7 of those computers are unluckily Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L7320 (so with
the VIA P4M800), given to our salesmen. Until now, I was able -as
written above- to only install Kubuntu 12.04, forcing it to use vesa
drivers so with faded colors and lower resolution (although correct
settings in xorg.conf file, that I effectively find in Xorg.log, except
for the screen resolution that fails to set).

Doing the same (poor) result with Lubuntu 13.10 seems more difficult, at
least for me (I wasn't able to go after the beginning of the
installation, since it freezes).

I've tried to force to load Unichrome setting correct values of
frequency, screen resolutions etc, but the best result I have obtained
in this case is a text mode.

I hope in the solution of this point, thanks in advance for your
precious support!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1205643] Re: VIA P4M800 graphics broken in Lubuntu/Xubuntu Saucy & 12.04.4 candidate

2014-01-19 Thread Andrea
Hi Mr. Brunzell!

First of all, thank you very much for your suggestions, that I have really
appreciated!
Thanks for the links.

However, we notice that people in our Company seem to appreciate Lubuntu
13.10 for many reasons, above all for the same way of use and feeling XP
has. I suppose that the passage towards other desktops, at the
beginning, could be harder for us to get it accepted by all the
employees. Until now, we have 4 Desktops that are running Lubuntu 13.10
and the testers seem quite accustomed in the daily use now. We see that
they are learning very fast.

So, I hope that developers will consider also this chipset (VIA P4M800) because
this is the problem now for us.
In the future, once all the employees will have used this OS for some time and
will have accepted it, for sure we will buy hardware with more compatibility or
expressely designed for (L)Ubuntu, but in this moment we have these Amilo
laptops that are running XP... (and one with Kubuntu 12.04 and the horrible
Vesa drivers, XP seems a Ferrari in comparison).

Thanks in advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1205643] Re: VIA P4M800 graphics broken in Lubuntu/Xubuntu Saucy & 12.04.4 candidate

2014-02-10 Thread Andrea
@ Erick: many thanks for the suggestion, I'll create an account in
Ubuntu Forums as you suggested.

But I post also there the results of the last Ubuntu-based saturday,
when I did many installations and all of them affected by the
impossiblity to get a working x-server:

- 1st installation: Ubuntu 12.04.1 - i386 desktop version - the
installation is very slow, it freezes towards the end. The Livecd
session works very fine, correct maximum screen resolution, good
colours. Tried to install also from the Livecd session. Grub damaged.

- 2nd installation: Ubuntu 12.04.0 - i 386 desktop version - the
installation is quicker, but it freezes from livecd session (graphics
ok). In the direct installation it seizes up, but you can continue if
you continue to hold a key... at the end, grubs work (I can start XP
session and Ubuntu recovery mode), but during the loading, after a fast
appearing of the Ubuntu logo, it freezes in a dark screen... no way to
enter in a terminal. In the recovery mode, I tried failsafeX session,
but after a while a "window" appears: the message says that it is
impossible to identify monitor and graphic card, then it returns to the
recovery menu without starting a low-resolution session

- 3rd installation: Kubuntu 12.04.1 - i386 desktop version - i don't try livecd
session, I directly start with the installation. Also here I have to hold an
any key to keep the installation ongoing, otherwise it freezes but it is
sufficient to return to hold a key and it restarts. At the end, I have a
working grub and it loads the system without freezing. At the beginning, all
seems ok, the screen resolution is the correct WXGA and not the XGA that I had
in the previous installation when I forced Kubuntu to use vesa drivers.
After a little bit, the system begins to continuously crash, a message (I have
been stupid not to literally write the contents, but I was quite tired...)
appears and more or less says that 'probably a bad graphic driver is
installed'. I try to reconfigure Xserver, but after about ten minutes the
system becomes very slow, it's difficult to use it although the nice grapchic
result... so I'm ready for...

- 4th installation: Ubuntu 12.04.0 - alternate version. Here the installation
is very fast and smooth. When I restart, the Ubuntu logo appears but the
loading freezes in the "usual dark" screen. Then I did the same passage of 2nd
installation with failsafeX and the same message that it's impossible to
determine screen and graphic card... so I have created a xorg.conf file forcing
to load openchrome as this: http://www.linlap.com/fujitsu_amilo_l7320gw
The system freezes during the loading, so in the 'usual' recovery mode I've
modified the xorg.conf file replacing 'openchrome' with 'vesa' (sic!).

Ok, now the system starts, with the same problems of my first post here
(XGA resolution instead of WXGA, faded colours etc.)... am I correct if
I say that perhaps it's a bug of openchrome driver more than X-stack?

Excuse me if I've been a little bit talkative, but I desired only to be
clear... obviously now (with vesa) the system works also with 12.04.4
(after the updates).

@Erick: yes, the ram is 1gb, the cpu is that but later I'll create an
account for Ubuntu Forums as you said.

Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1972059] [NEW] One screen does not come back from lock

2022-05-07 Thread Andrea
Public bug reported:

I have 2 screen (Dell).
Since having upgraded to 22.04, one of them struggles to come back after a lock.

Sometimes takes a few seconds, sometimes it is ok and sometimes it takes longer.
I have found that if I do Ctrl-Alt-F1... the screen comes back.

I have a DP and HDMI cable and tried to switch them around, it is always
the same screen: a Dell U2415 UltraSharp 24.

Never happened with any other version since about 18.04.

My experience is that I been able to install kubuntu 9.10 only with acpi=off
and nolapic kernel option at start up. The installation have been complete
without error but at the firt start up the screen freeze near after complete
log in. The laptop is an Asus M2400N with 1.4Ghz of first generation Centrino.
If I use option acpi=off the computer don't freeze but I can't use without ac
plugged in and the wireless dousen't work. Now I'm use 9.04 that did take me
some problem with the graphic card but after some new line in the xorg.conf
the problem seems to be solve. I'm very anhappy to see that free sotware don't
take forward step.
I'm sorry for my bad english and if I can help the comunity just say me what I
have to do.
Best regards.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1908099] [NEW] nvidia-dkms-390 fails to build on unstable / 5.10

2020-12-14 Thread Andrea Righi
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

nvidia-graphics-drivers-390 fails to build against linux 5.10:

ERROR (dkms apport): kernel package linux-headers-5.10.0-6-generic is not
supported
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.10.0-6-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/390.138/build/make.log for more information.
dpkg: error processing package nvidia-dkms-390 (--configure):
installed nvidia-dkms-390 package post-installation script subprocess returned
error exit status 10
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.137ubuntu12) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.10.0-6-generic
Errors were encountered while processing:
 nvidia-dkms-390
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

[Test case]

sudo apt install nvidia-dkms-390

[Fix]

Fix build errors adding the proper #ifdef to support the new 5.10
includes, function prototypes and data structs.

[Regression potential]

All the new code is conditional (#ifdef) and it's applied only with
5.10, so there is no risk to break the other kernels (5.8). Moreover,
it's worth considering that hirsute should move soon to 5.10.

2021-01-07 Thread Andrea Righi
New debdiff that prevents building UVM w/ Linux 5.10 (thanks
@albertomilone) and with a refreshed version of
buildfix_kernel_5.10.patch that should prevent a potential memory leak
due to the missing .gem_free_object in 5.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1921618] [NEW] Black wallpaper instead than set image

2021-03-28 Thread Andrea Bonarini
Public bug reported:

The image set as wallpaper appears for one second and then is replaced by a
black screen.
This occurs after a hard reset. After a suspension: nothing worked and I had to
do a hard reset by switching the machine off. At restart I'm in the mentioned
situation and the usual methods to reset the wall paper do not fix the problem.
Thank you!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1922723] [NEW] Weird CTRL+SHIFT+KEY behaviour

2021-04-06 Thread Andrea Agnolin
Public bug reported:

I run a newly installed Ubuntu Hirsute.
Inside a "Ubuntu on Xorg"(GNOME) session i cannot use CTRL+SHIFT+KEY shortcut
normally.
If I press first CTRL, then SHIFT, then KEY everything works.
If I press SHIFT, then CTRL then KEY nothing happens.
On the Ubuntu (GNOME Wayland) session things works out normal.

Step to reproduce:
* Log in in a Xorg session
* Open gnome-terminal
* Press CTRL + SHIFT + "N" (in this order), a new terminal window appears
* Press SHIFT + CTRL + "N" (in this order), nothing happens.

The same happens with Firefox, Nautilus and other apps.

Possibly, Related to this, I also found that, only on a Xorg session,
during a Wine-runned gamed I play "CTRL + KEY" behaves just like "KEY".
But this might be a Wine bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1922723] Re: Weird CTRL+SHIFT+KEY behaviour in Xorg sessions

I found a solution. I turned off the "Locate Pointer" accessibility setting.
So SHIFT+CTRL+KEY does not work in xorg session if "Locate Pointer" is turned

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1079822] Re: grafica

2012-11-21 Thread andrea bozza
When I turn on the PC and start ubuntu, sometimes, instead of the login screen,
it gives me a black screen with a blinking dash in the upper left of the screen
and I get only the pointer. So I used "xdiagnose" which gave me this error
report. I thought it had something to do with the drivers.
Now, I would like to know what happens, since my error report has been judged
invalid?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388612] Re: [GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510

2016-03-23 Thread Andrea Bini
Yes, I've upgraded the system to version 15.10 and installed all the
updates. glmark2 "ideas" benchmark now works but FooBillard++ still
triggers the lockup almost immediately. What really changed is that now
a reboot from another virtual console is no more needed. After the
lockup, the GPU restarts automatically in few seconds, the graphical
environment continues to work fine and the application terminates
reporting the error: "intel_do_flush_locked failed: Input/output error".
I'd like to find other applications, officially distributed with Ubuntu,
that causes this issue. I'll do it as soon as I can.

Thanks for your attention!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388612] Re: [GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510

2016-03-25 Thread Andrea Bini
Done, same result with FooBillard++ except that the graphical
environment becomes unusable; you can only move the mouse cursor. If you
switch to another virtual console and restart the lightdm service from
there, you come back to the login screen and you don't have to reboot.
I've tried OpenArena, Warzone 2100, two WebGL tests found on the web and
all glmark2 tests again on Ubuntu 15.10; they all works fine. Seems to
be a very specific problem. Can you suggest me an application that
performs a comprehensive GPU test or something else that is interesting
to try?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388612] Re: [GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510

2016-03-29 Thread Andrea Bini
Christopher M. Penalver, you mean to file a new bug report at
freedesktop.org? I haven't reported any of the duplicates of #80568; the
latter was linked to this bug by Felix Schwarz and then many other bugs
were mark as duplicates of it on freedesktop.org. Matt Turner already
suggested to file a new bug report for FooBillard++
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80568#c91) but seems that
no one has done it. I've found this
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72172) regarding
FooBillard++ on GM45 that may be relevant. I own the same chip on
another computer and I can confirm the same behaviour on Ubuntu 16.04.
The graphic glitches that happen during the game are very similar to the
ones shown on GM965, but the GPU doesn't hang and the game keeps
running. Maybe before reporting would be better to find other
applications that reveal the bug. What do you think about it? It would
help or create more confusion?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1584300] [NEW] X can't be started without login manager

2016-05-21 Thread andrea merello
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

X runs fine from the login manager, but if I remove the login manager
(apt-get remove sddm), X can't be run from the text login: running
startx don't even change to graphic mode and causes errors (log
attached).

This used to work at least up to 15.04

This happens on various VM vith different video card emulation (vmware, cirrus,
qemu vga) and on both ubuntu and kubuntu. Log changes slightly, but it still
seems a permission-related problem: depending by the (emulated) video HW, it
can complain about
xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)
or can segfault in libpciaccess.

This happens both on system updated from older version (15.04) and on a
new clean install from scratch.

While the installed-from-scratch system obviously has the default,
untouched, kernel, on the machine I updated from 15.04 I kept my custom
kernel, that is the same that worked before update to 16.04, so it's
probably not due to anything related to the kernel). Never tested
outside a VM on real HW.

On the system I updated from 15.04, I also tried to run startx as root,
and it seems to make the difference, because in this way the graphic is
initialized correctly. (I see some windows with errors, and I can't
reach the desktop, but this is probably another unrelated problem,
possibly due to my local configuration).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 492782] Re: [i945gme] Mouse cursor disappears after restarting screen (xrandr / resume)

2014-08-05 Thread Andrea Spinelli
This bug is alive and kicking on xubuntu 14 !! It shows everytime I
close and reopen the lid of my Asus portable, sending it in Suspend
Mode and back to ordinary life.

Best workaround I found is

Settings Manager > Light Locker Settings
  Enable Light locker ON
  Lock on suspend ON

This way when you close and reopen the lid you will be asked with the
password and the cursor won't disappear.

I empathize with the previous poster saying that his children complain
"On windows it does not happen!" Please fix it!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388612] [NEW] [GM965] GPU lockup running OpenGL applications on Dell Vostro 1510

2014-11-02 Thread Andrea Bini
Public bug reported:

Hello, I'm suffering a GPU lockup problem with Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit on a
Dell Vostro 1510 laptop with Intel graphics. The problem used to arise
also with Ubuntu 14.04 and is always reproducible with glmark2 on the
LiveCD. Just to run the "ideas" benchmark of glmark2 to trigger the
lockup in few seconds (glmark2 -b ideas). Other OpenGL applications also
causes the lockup (e.g. FooBillard++, my self-made SDL applications).
Memory test passed, BIOS at the latest version. Don't know if the
following is a good point but I think that the problem is not caused by
a failing hardware because it works fine on Windows. I tried with the
latest Intel upstream kernel (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/) and upstream X.org
(https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa), no change.

[Personal Notes]
I'm new to Ubuntu's world, I hope I've done things right, if not please tell me
and I will resend the report or supply more information. I've created the bug
report with "ubuntu-bug xorg --save" from another machine via SSH while the
sick machine was frozen. It seemed to me more logical than using ubuntu-bug
directly when the system is working fine. I've collected other information via
SSH during the same lockup: dmesg, Xorg.0.log, i915_error_state. The latter was
added as attachment.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1072717] Re: Regression: Video corruption on login

2015-01-26 Thread Andrea Azzarone
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running
apport-collect and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1388612]

Hi all, I'm the reporter of this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1388612 that was redirected
here.

I've tested the fix on my machine updating the Xorg stack from
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa A packaged version of
Mesa with the fix was released there yesterday only. Unfortunately, even though
I'd like to, I'm not able to update the system by myself as soon as a change is
committed. Cloning the Mesa repository, building and installing it is not
enough, right? Is there a "faster" method than the one I've used?

Anyway, glmark2 ideas benchmark works fine now but, in my case, the
issue is not solved yet. An application written by myself using SDL
(https://www.libsdl.org/), that before the fix used to cause the hang
most of the times, now terminates due to a failing assertion in Mesa.

The most frequent is:
SDLApp: ../../../../src/mesa/vbo/vbo_exec_draw.c:222: vbo_exec_bind_arrays:
Assertion `exec->vtx.bufferobj->Mappings[MAP_INTERNAL].Pointer' failed.

Sometimes this happens:
SDLApp: ../../../../src/mesa/vbo/vbo_exec_draw.c:278: vbo_exec_vtx_unmap:
Assertion `exec->vtx.buffer_ptr != ((void *)0)' failed.

The application works fine on another machine with a different chip.

The billard game FooBillard++ (http://foobillardplus.sourceforge.net/) still
causes the hang immediately.
The workaround of using always_flush_cache=true and always_flush_batch=true
doesn't work with my application nor with FooBillard++. I was just able to use
it to let ideas benchmark running fine prior to the fix. I've not tested Chrome
yet but I can do it if it can be useful.

Thank you Kenneth for the fix and for any further help. I'd really like
to use Linux on this machine for my developments. If I can help somehow
let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1462994] Re: 2:1.17.1-0ubuntu4 broke xmir ABI

2015-08-05 Thread Andrea Bernabei
I hit this bug today
on vivid overlay PPA.

My laptop was not booting anymore. I was adviced to reinstall the older
xserver-xorg-core (1.17.1-0ubuntu3) and that fixed it.

The overlay ppa currently offers:
xserver-xorg-core ---> 1.17.2-1ubuntu0.1~overlay1(and this is the version
causing issues)
xserver-xorg-video-intel > 2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2.2 (and this version
doesn't seem to contain the fix)
