[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1401497] [NEW] [xorg-edgers] Packaging issue. Nvidia drivers are not installing. They are not coming with nvidia-xconfig or any of the usual programs
Public bug reported: On the 7th or the 8th, the xorg edgers repo updated. The driver i was using is nvidia-340. I don't exactly know how this works but it deleted my xorg.conf file and did so on every relog and reboot. I had had this problem a few months back but I was able to work around it by setting the xorg.conf file to read-only, using the command sudo 'chattr +i xorg.conf'. I tried the same thing this time around but the xorg log keeps saying that the driver doesnt exist. I'll attach the log if i find it. More to the point, in my last successful install, after installing the driver, i just had to run nvidia-xconfig the for the driver to work. This time around, none of the programs that are usually installed have been installed, no nvidia-persistenced, no nvidia-xconfig, no nvidia- smi. The only thing that comes is nvidia-detector. When i force xorg to use the same xorg.conf as before, by giving it readonly attribute so that it isnt autodeleted, xorg log says I have the same problem with the rest of the rest of the nvidia drivers i've tried including: nvidia-current, nvidia-331, nvidia-343, nvidia-346. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1094451] Re: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad right-click does not work on Samsung NP900X4C, 12.04
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected precise referred-by-support running- unity ubuntu ** Description changed: I have two identical spec NP900X4C laptops. On one I installed 12.10, on the other 12.04. On 12.10 the touchpad works fine, including right-click. On 12.04 the touchpad works fine, EXCEPT for right-click. The standard settings options do not correct this problem. I tried following the Enabling right button click instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection however the enable- rightbutton.sh script bailed out claiming the right-click area was not defined. The issue is also simpler than the mixture of problems reported at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/933707 I therefore used xinput list-props on both devices to compare the settings for the touchpad. I discovered that on 12.04 Synaptics Soft Button Areas is set to all 0s, whereas on 12.10 it has specific settings. I therefore applied the following command and the right-button immediately worked fine. I opened this bug so that the correct setting for this model of touchpad can be included in the standard 12.04 package. xinput set-prop device-id property-id 1630, 0, 1871, 0, 0, 0, 0,0 Kernel version: 3.2.0-35-generic xserver-xorg-input-synaptics version: 1.6.2-1ubuntu1~precise2 Touchpad spec from /proc/input/bus/devices: I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=000e Version= N: Name=ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0 S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input6 U: Uniq= H: Handlers=mouse0 event6 B: PROP=5 B: EV=b B: KEY=e420 1 0 0 0 0 B: ABS=66180001103 + --- + ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu15.1 + Architecture: amd64 + DistUpgraded: Fresh install + DistroCodename: precise + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 + DistroVariant: ubuntu + EcryptfsInUse: Yes + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Precise Pangolin - Release amd64 (20120817.1) + MachineType: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. 900X3C/900X3D/900X4C/900X4D + MarkForUpload: True + Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.6.2-1ubuntu1~precise2 + PackageArchitecture: amd64 + ProcEnviron: + TERM=xterm + PATH=(custom, no user) + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-35-generic root=UUID=8a7d6bca-b3c0-499a-b4da-302ae8866a28 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-35.55-generic 3.2.34 + Tags: precise running-unity ubuntu referred-by-support + Uname: Linux 3.2.0-35-generic x86_64 + UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) + UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin plugdev sambashare sudo + dmi.bios.date: 09/19/2012 + dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies Ltd. + dmi.bios.version: P02ABK + dmi.board.asset.tag: Base Board Asset Tag + dmi.board.name: NP900X4C-A04HK + dmi.board.vendor: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. + dmi.board.version: FAB1 + dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Tag + dmi.chassis.type: 9 + dmi.chassis.vendor: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. + dmi.chassis.version: 0.1 + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologiesLtd.:bvrP02ABK:bd09/19/2012:svnSAMSUNGELECTRONICSCO.,LTD.:pn900X3C/900X3D/900X4C/900X4D:pvr0.1:rvnSAMSUNGELECTRONICSCO.,LTD.:rnNP900X4C-A04HK:rvrFAB1:cvnSAMSUNGELECTRONICSCO.,LTD.:ct9:cvr0.1: + dmi.product.name: 900X3C/900X3D/900X4C/900X4D + dmi.product.version: 0.1 + dmi.sys.vendor: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD. + version.compiz: compiz 1:0.9.7.8+bzr3121-0ubuntu1 + version.ia32-libs: ia32-libs N/A + version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.32-1ubuntu1 + version.libgl1-mesa-dri: libgl1-mesa-dri 8.0.4-0ubuntu0.2 + version.libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental N/A + version.libgl1-mesa-glx: libgl1-mesa-glx 8.0.4-0ubuntu0.2 + version.xserver-xorg-core: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.8 + version.xserver-xorg-input-evdev: xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.7.0-0ubuntu1.2 + version.xserver-xorg-video-ati: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubuntu2 + version.xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.17.0-1ubuntu4.2 + version.xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20111201+b5534a1-1build2 ** Attachment added: BootDmesg.txt https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1094451/+attachment/3477656/+files/BootDmesg.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1094451 Title: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad right-click does not work on Samsung NP900X4C, 12.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1094451/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1094451] [NEW] ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad right-click does not work on Samsung NP900X4C, 12.04
Public bug reported: I have two identical spec NP900X4C laptops. I opened this bug so that the correct setting for this model of touchpad can be included in the standard 12.04 package. xinput set-prop device-id property-id 1630, 0, 1871, 0, 0, 0, 0,0 Kernel version: 3.2.0-35-generic xserver-xorg-input-synaptics version: 1.6.2-1ubuntu1~precise2 Touchpad spec from /proc/input/bus/devices: I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=000e Version= N: Name=ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0 S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input6 U: Uniq= H: Handlers=mouse0 event6 B: PROP=5 B: EV=b B: KEY=e420 1 0 0 0 0 B: ABS=66180001103 ** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1094451 Title: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad right-click does not work on Samsung NP900X4C, 12.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1094451/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1074486] [NEW] Window Manager Decorations and Toolbars do not appear, ALT-TAB does not work
Public bug reported: This is a clean install on a new machine. The machine does not have a CD/DVD drive and was not able to boot from USB using the 12.10 Desktop installer. Therefore I installed 12.04 from USB and immediately performed apt-get dist-upgrade to 12.10. The machine boots to a console (tty1) rather than an X screen. If I start X manually via startx, the desktop loads a blank desktop. The power bar and toolbar at the top don't appear. However if I right- click I can create folders and from there launch the file explorer. From this I can run individual gnome programs fine however they do not show the normal window decorations (minimize, maximize, close), and they cannot be dragged. So it seems as if some basic package or configuration was not installed by ubuntu-desktop. I believe that this weird window manager behaviour stems from the same root cause as the machine not booting to X. Running X -configure from a terminal creates what appears to be a viable xorg.conf for two cards, but X does not start, and Xorg.0.log ends with (EE) NV(1): Cannot read V_BIOS (3) Input/output error relevant lines from lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G72 [GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS] (rev a1) 04:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1) Please let me know if I should open a new bug report or provide additional information. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: Meerkat (10.10) does not apply theme properly
I am seeing a similar problem with a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 with Nvidia 173... drivers and two video cards. It does appear to be a race condition, however the fix from post #68 does not work for me. The problem can be reliably reproduced (or not) with the following steps: 1. log in normally. 2. activate switch user in the gui; a new xsession starts with a password entry box 3. enter the password. when typing in the password, the 'dots' in the password box do not echo immediately. 4. now do one of two things: a. immediately hit enter - the new session starts with the wrong theme b. wait until the 'dots' echo before hitting enter - the new session starts correctly with the correct theme. looking at .xsession-errors , the difference between a 'good' login and a 'bad' one appears to be: ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4748): WARNING **: You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4748): WARNING **: Unable to start xsettings manager: Could not initialize xsettings manager. Failed to play sound: Sound disabled Unable to find a synaptics device. Hope that helps locate the problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557744] Re: [arrandale] lucid beta 2 live shows black screen
Any word on if the patch listed in comments #69 and #70 will work on a Lucid kernel? Here is how installed Lucid on the elitebook 8440p (with Intel). It is a poor workaround, but at least it works: 1) install using the Alternate Installer CD, make sure to set the nomodeset nosplash kernel options 2) after the installation is finished, choose rescue mode from the grub menu (it may be necessary to pass along the nomodeset nosplash options again?) 3) when rescue mode asks you what to do, choose Fail-safe X 4) copy the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe to /etc/X11/xorg.conf 5) change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=nosplash nomodeset in /etc/default/grub 6) run update-grub You know have a working system, albeit using the VESA Xorg driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562138] [NEW] radeon KMS causes corrupt VGA output on X1400
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Booting up the latest 10.04 daily live-cd, the VGA output is unusable. It looks like an incorrect frequency, and the screen size is wrong (it's too narrow for the resolution). The wavering/out-of-phase-ness is so bad that it's impossible to read. This happens on both the X console and X11, and goes away when I use the internal laptop LCD instead (LVDS). If I use both screens in a mirror or extend mode, the same problems occur. So, this led me to believe that the problem might be with Kernel Mode Setting (KMS). I added the options: radeon.modeset=0 vga=771 to the livecd and, voila, no more corruption. Everything works again, and I can use my big LCD via VGA! I've attached as much information as I can; I can also show a video of the corruption. I had Ubuntu 8.10 on my computer previously; it's a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Mobility X1400 graphics from ati. I'm using the April 13th Daily LiveCD here, but the corruption was evident at least with the latest Beta livecd. Let me know if I can give any more information!
