I have the same issue with a fresh install of kubuntu 22.04 LTS on an HP 820 G1. Random screen blackout -- machine can only be revived by a reboot. The Windows operating system that was replaced by kubuntu worked flawlessly (except that it was Windows, which is one hell of a flaw). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1715749 Title: Intermittent black screen on HP EliteBook 840 G1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1715749/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1909805] Re: libclc-amdgcn missing files for current AMD APUs
Same problem too with Radeon RX 5500 XT. It worked on my Radeon RX 570 (AMD X570 + Ryzen 3950X). Using the generic ICD and Mesa OpenCL doesn't work. The easy fix that also gives better results on all benchmarks I've done for Vulkan and OpenGL is installing the latest AMDGPU Pro driver (version 21.20) from AMD.com. Remember to specify: --opencl=rocr It's Open Source as most AMD projects. https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm So NVIDIA users can use most of AMD's stuff because of being FOSS, like the below mentioned FidelityFX, is Open Source and appears for NVIDIA users too in the growing number of games supporting it. NVIDIA however contribute little back... PS: Previously it was --opencl=PAL but that is deprecated. The installation docs and script help are updated good and now finally tells what legacy is (older than Vega 10). Using --help on the installation script tells what you need. Basically just that you specify (IDK what it does if you don't specify an OpenCL type but you can check with --dry- run and see if it installs packages with "rocr", the new, or "orca", the old. If you use the pro installation script, it is the same as specifying --pro on the all-free unless pro is specified. Adding legacy OpenCL as well is NO point, as shown as an example in the docs, only if you switch between this and older than Vega 10 cards, as that legacy loader doesn't work alone, but doesn't matter if it's installed, however say Geekbench will complain about a lacking library (.so). Legacy for older than Vega 10 AMD Support told me before they added it to the docs. Supports Ubuntu 20.04.2 and Ubuntu 18.04.5. Made the mistake of installing the previous that said Ubuntu 20.04.1 while having 20.04.2, as I supposed it wouldn't matter, as I've never had problems before. However, didn't work. Then of course like days later they had released one with "initial support" (because 1 known issue but rare use case), then soon after the current with a fix for that. As soon as installed, as it uses DKMS, I'm sure say when 20.04.3 comes it'll just work. Driver uses a local apt repo so must be manually updated (which is good if you're very satisfied with the one you've got now). Keep in mind apparently there will be a new driver with some good updates to FidelityFX etc, although that already works in the 21.10 driver (Shadow of The Tomb Raider for example). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libclc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1909805 Title: libclc-amdgcn missing files for current AMD APUs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libclc/+bug/1909805/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1819909] [NEW] Problem with windows
Public bug reported: No border around windows, no resizing buttons (max, min, close). Windows cannot be moved or resized. Alt+tab and Alt+F4 have no effect, but some other keyboard shortcuts, e.g. ctrl+alt+T and ctrl+Q, seem to work ok. Only closing a window changes focus; even clicking with mouse doesn't. For instance, I can use ctrl+alt+t to open a terminal, and click in it all I want, but even though it is on top, whatever I type just goes into this window. When I close the browser, however, it will gain focus. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1748511] Re: Xorg crash
Thanks for the questions 1) Removing the kernel parameter causes the same problem (plus, shutdown doesn't work.) 2) I cannot take the graphics card out of the laptop, but I uninstalled the nouveau package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau. This may have improved things; see below! 3) This is on a fresh install of 17.10 on a freshly partitioned/formatted disk. 4) When I log in to an Xorg session (after removing the nouveau xorg driver,) the desktop takes a long time to appear. The computer is largely unresponsive to mouse/keyboard for many seconds, then becomes responsive for a second, then goes unresponsive again; this repeats a few times, before the desktop entirely locks up (and a SSH shell also is locked up at that point.) However, pointing on the touchscreen will move the cursor in this state; moving the touchpad does not move the cursor, and nothing can be clicked/interacted with. Regarding 2) after logging into a default session (Wayland,) with the nouveau Xorg driver removed, but the nouveau kernel module still loaded (despite blacklisting,) it has not crashed my desktop yet. vainfo seems to think that I have accelerated video decoding, and glxgears runs at 60 fps in full screen, so perhaps this is a workaround? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1748511 Title: Xorg crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1748511/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1748511] [NEW] Xorg crash
Public bug reported: I've installed ubuntu desktop 17.10 amd64 from scratch in UEFI mode on a Dell XPS 15 9560 laptop. This laptop comes with i915 built-in graphics, as well as an NVIDIA 1050 GPU, but I am not trying to make the NVIDIA work yet, and have blacklisted nouveau. I'm using xorg 1:7.7+19ubuntu3 xserver-xorg-video-intel/artful,now 2:2.99.917+git20170309-0ubuntu1 amd64 I have to set acpi_rev_override=5 in the kernel boot parameters, because rev 6 causes other bugs (hang on shutdown, for example.) I'm using whatever the default desktop (presumably Gnome) and compositor are for a ubuntu desktop install. I can boot to login; I can log in to desktop, but shortly after desktop login, the screen goes black, and after a little while, I'm back at the login screen. Logging in again, works, but at that point, I believe I'm in "dumb software mode." [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 896922] Re: Lenovo L520 - psmouse.c: touchpad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync and stops working for seconds
Christopher, I have raised https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1268365 However this bug (896922) was originally created by Matthias after he was told do do so in similar circumstances on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/773433, a bug which is now marked as Expired. I respect that you want to distinguish specific individual circumstances but this is a severe problem (I have had to restart psmouse twice while writing this) and creating separate unlinked bugs dilutes the impact, and presumably reduces the chances of it being looked at. From a quick google I found also these which look like exactly the same issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1165089 (raised 5/4/2013, also marked as Expired) and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1198274 (raised 5/7/2013, which you have put a similar comment on) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1261133 (raised 15/12/2013, which you have put a similar comment on) Could we perhaps nominate one of these to be the the master issue and mark it with an appropriate severity, and mark the others all as duplicates? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/896922 Title: Lenovo L520 - psmouse.c: touchpad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync and stops working for seconds To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/896922/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 822872] Re: LeftCtrl+LeftAlt+Key should be equivalent to RightAlt+Key
The Ctrl+Alt equivalence to AltGr is a Windows workaround to the fact that some keyboards didn't have an AltGr (such keyboards are still sometimes found in the US) to enable people with such keyboards to attempt to write languages like Spanish and English (okay, there are other ways of writing words like façade and naïve, but Windows didn't support those either, and indeed the Ctrl+Alt technique still leaves many characters out - so copy-paste from charmap or autocorrect bindings are still needed on Windows to write many languages). This is a reasonable workaround in that system for the following reasons: 1. They were stuck for anything else to try, because there simply wasn't an AltGr key on those keyboards. 2. They don't have many uses for other Ctrl+Alt bindings, and those they do use (Ctrl+Alt+Delete of course) don't have AltGr bindings on most keyboard layouts. It remains a reasonable workaround for that system, because it's a fixed workaround for that system - this leads to item 2 remaining true, and people don't create Ctrl+Alt bindings. Strictly, that last point isn't true; people sometimes do program bindings to Ctrl+Alt combos that have no built-in binding in their locale, and then have internationalisation problems, but the workaround dug a hole that it's now next to impossible to dig out of because so many Windows users are used to it. This is not a reasonable workaround on other systems. 1. It isn't needed for most keyboards (though admittedly such keyboards do still exist). 2. There are a large number of cases where Ctrl+Alt is bound to something. Ctrl+Alt L will default to locking the screen, Ctrl+Alt T will launch a terminal window; clearly we cannot have those happening when someone tries to type a letter, or vice versa. Windows did something decades ago that seemed like a good idea at the time, and arguably was, and has to live with the negative consequences because Windows users are used to it. *nix did something different decades ago that seemed like a good idea at the time to people who did have AltGr keys, was largely invisible to most who didn't (who mostly make little use of the characters it allows anyway), and has to live with the fact that it confuses Windows users because *nix users are used to it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xkeyboard-config in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/822872 Title: LeftCtrl+LeftAlt+Key should be equivalent to RightAlt+Key To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/822872/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1081922] [NEW] Screen resolution bonkers on undock
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 12.10, apt-get upgrade daily, this started a few days ago (probably after 2012-11-15). Things were, finally, quite perfect for a few weeks before that. Thanks to whoever fixed the docking/undocking nightmare previously. Now it is back with a vengeance. When undocking, the display resolution on the default X screen (screen 7) is stretched. Only the lower about 40% of the screen shows on the physical screen. The background image and any app window is enlarged and distorted. Very little can be done, since the menu entries on the top bar apparently are placed above the physical screen. This happens no matter how the undocking is done. Lock screen, suspend, nothing helps. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 997470] Re: apport-gpu-error-intel.py keep crashing for 4-5 times on every reboot
Thank you, I will certainly do this if and when the problem reappears. Now on 12.10, and things are slightly different. I am not able to reproduce any of the problems people are reporting, but probably that's because I do not get GPU faults on my hardware. The fix I uploaded is to stop installing the udev rule that triggers running /usr/share/apport/apport-gpu-error-intel.py See `man udevadm` for tips on examining your udev rules. I can't find on my systems anywhere that this script is being hooked in. But perhaps in certain corner cases it's still present. You can use udevadm to identify where it's hooked in. If it shows up there, let me know what you find, and that may give me more clues on how to fix this better. If you don't care to have a proper fix, and just want to eliminate the behavior on your system locally, just delete /usr/share/apport/apport- gpu-error-intel.py and it should stop bothering you (at least until your system updates and re-installs that file). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xdiagnose in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/997470 Title: apport-gpu-error-intel.py keep crashing for 4-5 times on every reboot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdiagnose/+bug/997470/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 997470] Re: apport-gpu-error-intel.py keep crashing for 4-5 times on every reboot
Upgraded to version 2.5.1 of xdiagnose from precise-proposed (was installed as version 2.5) Can't see that you have prescribed just what to do with it, but installing and ticking off the debug options did not change the behaviour. NB - the error at my laptop is quite similar to this, but intermittent on boot, it only occurs about half of the time, and not necessarily right away. It is very frequent on resume from suspend, and almost certain to occur on resume from suspend with 2 X sessions active. There also seems to be a genuine gpu or other X related bug sometimes, which messes up the screen and eventually brings down compiz, and it is hard to tell which is which. The Xorg logs from before the upgrade of xdiagnose and the debug options have hung GPU entries, the present Xorg log does not. But the pop-up panel symptom was definitely there anyway. root@byttevora:~# ls -l /var/log/X* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 35511 Jun 19 09:21 /var/log/Xorg.0.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 35333 Jun 19 09:19 /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 35819 Jun 19 07:01 /var/log/Xorg.1.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 36557 Jun 18 07:36 /var/log/Xorg.1.log.old -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40082 Jun 18 19:11 /var/log/Xorg.2.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 52957 Jun 13 14:54 /var/log/Xorg.2.log.old root@byttevora:~# grep '(EE)' /var/log/X* /var/log/Xorg.0.log:(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old:(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. /var/log/Xorg.1.log:(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. /var/log/Xorg.1.log:[ 17290.426] (EE) intel(0): Detected a hung GPU, disabling acceleration. /var/log/Xorg.1.log:[ 17290.426] (EE) intel(0): When reporting this, please include i915_error_state from debugfs and the full dmesg. /var/log/Xorg.1.log.old:(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. /var/log/Xorg.2.log:(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. /var/log/Xorg.2.log:[ 34773.156] (EE) intel(0): Detected a hung GPU, disabling acceleration. /var/log/Xorg.2.log:[ 34773.213] (EE) intel(0): When reporting this, please include i915_error_state from debugfs and the full dmesg. /var/log/Xorg.2.log.old:(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. root@byttevora:~# Will now try the workarounds disable bootloader graphics and disable VESA framebuffer driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875107] [NEW] Displays won't come out of suspend.
Public bug reported: Radeon board has one HDMI and one VGA attached monitors. If the monitors go into suspended mode you can't get them out. Power cycling the monitors is the only way to recover. Everything is working ok, in the main PC. It just looks like the radeon driver is not telling the monitors to wake up when escape/mouse is pressed to get to the login screen needed to exit suspend. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 874421] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: Enabling the ATI proprietary driver on this system results in a system that hangs at boot. I had to use recovery mode to remove the fglrx packages and switch back to mesa libgl. I suspect this is some sort of install problem aournd KMS fighting with the ATI drivers. It doesn't appear to me as if the ATI drivers got started properly. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774938] Re: Erratic cursor movement when using Coordinate Transformation Matrix
Quick Update: I think I'm a bit confused about this -- from what I understand, the evdev SwapAxes option has been deprecated in favor of the coordinate transform matrix. I was interpreting to mean that in my xorg.conf.d script, I could still set the SwapAxes in my xorg.conf.d script, and the coordinate transformation matrix would be now be used under the hood. Below is what I was using: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-calibration.conf: Section InputClass Identifier calibration MatchProduct eGalax Option Calibration 76 1895 129 1852 Option SwapAxes 1 EndSection The above configuration is what still causes the erratic movement. However, I found that to setting SwapAxes to 0 and using xinput to set the devices coordinate transform matrix to [ 0 1 0; 1 0 0; 0 0 1] swapped the axes without the erratic movement, but definitely requires further calibration. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774938 Title: Erratic cursor movement when using Coordinate Transformation Matrix To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/774938/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774938] Re: Erratic cursor movement when using Coordinate Transformation Matrix
Hi there. I've got a touchscreen here with an eGalax Inc. USB TouchController, which requires an axes swap. After switching to 11.04 I began experiencing the symptoms described in the original bug report -- the pointer would jump between a desired coordinate (x,y) to (x,0) or (0,y). After applying the xorg-server 2:1.10.1-1ubuntu1.1 update, I'm still experiencing this jumping cursor functionality when the evdev axes swap option is enabled. I'm not entirely sure what additional information would be useful to provide -- please let me know and I'll dig up whatever is necessary to debug this. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met
If people really want progress, the Ubuntu devs have nothing to do with it at the moment. nvidia-96 is the proprietary driver from Nvidia. Until Nvidia releases a xorg 1.10 compatible version (as they have for 2xx+ and 173 series, Ubuntu can't really do anything (that I know of) except providing some sort of alternate older version of xorg, which would probably create a huge number of problems. So, contact Nvidia if you want progress. After they release the driver, THEN it's up to the Ubuntu devs to get it packaged for Ubuntu. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763130] Re: X hangs at startup (segfault in fglrx?) after Natty beta upgrade
Worked around problem by purging all 'fglrx' packages, then using updatedb/locate to find all files on the filesystem containing the string fglrx, checking to see which of them were actually owned by packages with: for filename in $(locate fglrx); do dpkg-query -S $filename; done and renaming out every file that wasn't part of a package (the only two that were were: app-install-data: /usr/share/app-install/desktop/fglrx-driver.desktop x11-common: /usr/share/apport/package-hooks/source_fglrx-installer.py ) With all of those renamed out, X started OK (non-accelerated, using the 'radeon' driver) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/763130 Title: X hangs at startup (segfault in fglrx?) after Natty beta upgrade ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555573] Re: [g41] GPU hung: Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error
I have been experiencing this problem since installing 10.04 Lucid LTS on a Dell Inspiron 530. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers
I just did a fresh install of Maverick 64-bit on my HP EliteBook 8440p with NVS 3100m graphics. I still had to use nomodeset to install and to boot thereafter, but that's not an issue. After installing the nVidia proprietary drivers, I found that whenever my notebook tries to power its screen off, it gets stuck as black and has to be restarted to fix. The computer is still responsive, since I can ctrl-alt-del, enter, tab, enter to poweroff. I have tried adding the [Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1] line to the device section of my xorg.conf and rebooting, just as I did in Lucid. Unlike in Lucid, this did not resolve my issue. My nvidia driver version is 260.19.06-0ubuntu1. Could anyone please suggest any workarounds I could try? I can suspend just fine, but I often like to shut my screen and let my notebook continue working. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524064] Re: Maximum number of clients reached with few windows open
I see the exact same problem with ATI hardware. So, I think this is reported against the wrong package, and I think the duplicate that is marked is incorrect. I am not doing anything more advanced than I have done for years. Bumping the client limit will just mean we hit a higher limit after a little longer. I'm pretty convinced it's a client issue, and there's a leaky client, but I'm having a lot of trouble pinning the client responsible down. ** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 260138 (needs x11 protocol update) Xorg needs client limit raised -- Maximum number of clients reached with few windows open https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575186] Re: X locks up on Thinkpad X201 i5 Laptop
Can anyone confirm this is USB related? I can use my computer indefinitely without external USB devices but it will lock up with one plugged in. There is also this issue https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/566149 that leads me to believe there are more than just one problem with the USB driver for x201. I will try that patch this weekend and test to see if it resolves this problem as well. -- X locks up on Thinkpad X201 i5 Laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/575186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Well I just reporting another freeze (two in a row! :( ). Both times I was not using my soundcard. I had been using an externel display, keyboard and mouse when this happened. I will also note that I am using a patched kernel from the above thread. I am using the kernel debs provided by #45 and #46.
