Boot with Linux 4.4.0-47-generic (upstart) instead of (systemd) now led to tty1.
The Login-Screen did not show-up at all. CTRL+ALT+F7 did not react.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1644666] [NEW] Xorg crash

2016-11-24 Thread Piraten-Kris Pseudonym
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 16.04.1 (Automatic Upgrade from 14.04)
My Onboard-Graphics (AMD-System, ASRock N68C-S UCC):
  Nvidia C61 [GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a]
---
In the Past:
=> System and Apps worked well with Auto-Login enabled.
To eliminate Hardware-Errors:
> Memtest
> Boot with Windows-XP
=> No Problems

Problems in short: Linux 4.4.0-47-generic (systemd) and (upstart)
--
1. nvidia-304.132-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 => Login-Loop
2. nouveau, Thunderbird, Firefox => System-(Freeze)-Crash with Stripes-Screen
---
I don't know in which Category to sort the Bugs
So this one is for the (Nr.1) Login-Loop (from tty-Terminal)
(I already filed another Bug-Report for the (Nr.2) System-(Freeze)-Crash with
Stripes-Screen)

First Problem startet on 2016-Nov-05: => Login-Loop
---
I later found out, that one Day before, the following Auto-Updates had been
installed:
---
libcurl3-gnutls(7.47.0-1ubuntu2.1, 7.47.0-1ubuntu2.2)
nvidia304(304.131-0ubuntu3, 304.132-0ubuntu0.16.04.2)
nvidia-opencl-icd-304 (304.131-0ubuntu3, 304.132-0ubuntu0.16.04.2)
libcurl3(7.47.0-1ubuntu2.1, 7.47.0-1ubuntu2.2)
---
After Shutdown, the next Computer-Start was stuck in a
=> Login-Loop: After entering the correct Password, the Screen turns black for
a Second, then the Login-Form shows up again.
---
I tried a few things, that did not help, like:
> CTRL+F2 => Terminal > sudo ..
> apt autoclean
> apt clean
> apt autoremove
> apt update
> apt upgrade
> apt dist-upgrade
> shutdown -r now
> mv .Xauthority .Xauthority.alt

> service lightdm restart
> shutdown -r now
> apt purge lightdm
> apt install lightdm
> shutdown -r now
> .. Boot into different Linux-Kernel, .. (upstart),
> .. Boot into Recovery-Mode > .. > Repair > ..
> .. I also tried to install other nvidia-drivers, which, sadly, i did not
> document.
=> Did NOT work
---
Only Thing that helped was:
---
> sudo apt purge nvidia-*
> sudo shutdown -r now
=> (nouveau-Driver was automatically installed)
=> Auto-Login to Desktop

But then there was a second Problem:

When > starting Thunderbird, mostly at once, sometimes after > opening some
E-Mail-Windows, another Error occurred:
=> System freeze for 3 Seconds, then Screen turned to Stripes-Wallpaper =>
Total (Freeze-)Crash
--
Later, even with DISabled Hardware-Acceleration, starting both, Firefox and
Thunderbird led to the System-Crash.
(Sometimes, the System with nouveau booted and auto-logined into a Black Screen
with a Mouse-Pointer. Nevertheless the System seemed to work and could be
rebooted normally.)
---
> CTRL+ALT+F2 => did NOT work
> Magic Sys-Request (SysRQ): (ALT+PRINT)+ REISUB => did NOT work
> ping to IP => unreachable
---
After cold Reboot, i tried again to switch back from nouveau- to nvidia-Drivers
> Additional Drivers > Nvidia-304.132
=> Login-Loop
---
> sudo apt purge nvidia-*
> sudo apt install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
=> Auto-Login
>  Firefox / Thunderbird => System-(Freeze)-Crash with Stripes-Screen
---

> sudo apt purge nvidia-*

=> Login-Loop
---
> sudo apt purge nvidia-*
> Additional Drivers > nouveau
> Boot > Grub-2 > "Erweiterte Optionen für Ubuntu" > "Ubuntu, mit Linux
> 4.4.0-47-generic" (NO Option=SYSTEMD?)
=> Auto-Login
>  Firefox / Thunderbird => System-(Freeze)-Crash with Stripes-Screen

What seemed to help was:

> Boot > Grub-2 > "Erweiterte Optionen für Ubuntu" > "Ubuntu, mit Linux
> 4.4.0-47-generic (upstart)" (UPSTART!)
=> Auto-Login
> Firefox / Thunderbird => seem to work stable!
=> After half an Hour of testing:
>  open Firefox (Hardware-Acceleration disabled)
=> System-(Freeze)-Crash with Stripes-Screen
-
Because this is far more stable:
Changed Standard-Boot in Grub-2 to UpStart instead of SystemD
---
> Terminal >
sudo apt install upstart-sysv
su
sudo shutdown -r now
---
For Roll-Back:
> Terminal >
sudo apt install systemd-sysv
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo shutdown -r now

Sorry, don't know, what to try next ..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1484380] Re: Xorg regular crash on wily

2015-08-30 Thread Kris Anoikesis
If anything was hoped to have been fixed with the master branch version of the
xserver-xorg-video-intel, well, then, it does nothing to address this crash.
And I got no logs to show.
Is there any way to throttle the log output to a level that would both prevent
excessive disk usage and preserve the most vital debug info at the same time?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1484380] Re: Xorg regular crash on wily

2015-08-29 Thread Kris Anoikesis
I installed the test build the other day and no crash thus far. @Timo, does
this build contain any actual fixes or am I just being lucky?
I gave up on putting up with xorg frantically logging to Xorg.0.log after the
file exceeded 5GB so I guess I'd rather not rely on my luck...

2015-08-18 Thread Kris Anoikesis
Hi all,

The exact same thing started bugging me as well. A handful of data:
Kubuntu 15.10, intel gpu, xserver-xorg-video-intel == 2:2.99.917-1ubuntu1.
Will it do any good to post my logs?

It seemed that my problem was related to Bug #1200829. For those of you
who experience the same problem I had, the fix is given in the PPA:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1171342] Re: mouse scroll wheel not working in gedit & System Monitor

2014-02-02 Thread Kris
I'm having the same problem and adding the PPA "ppa:townsend/gtk-
testing" doesn't help. After I add it and run "apt-get update" there's
nothing to upgrade.

Also, the title of the bug suggests that there might also be a problem
with System Monitor, but I only experience the issue in gedit. All other
applications are scrolling just fine.

Any ideas? Would this be a separate bug?

I've tried disabling workspace scrolling and switching between overlay/legacy
scrollbars, but that made no difference.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 884071] [NEW] ubuntu 11.10 nvidia drivers crash x11

2011-10-30 Thread Kris
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.10

X11 crashes on boot, when using a xorg.conf configured for nvidia
drivers.

I have tried the latest stable version and also have tried the 285 version.
To even boot in to my system in KDE I have to first delete my xorg.conf file.

I was able to get both monitors working, be it mirrored, by removing all
nvidia packages.

Very frustrating as this worked awesome on 11.04 with the 285 driver and
dual screens using twinview.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657963] Re: skype (and others) cause complete crash of xorg on startup/IO activity

2010-10-11 Thread Kris Willis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 657966 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/657966

I am also experiencing what appears to be the same issue, however not
only with Skype and Opera, but also with MusicBrainz Picard, VLC and
VirtualBox (non-OSE).

If I launch VLC from the command line with cvlc, the video opens in a
window with no sound, but launching standard vlc crashes, apparently
when you move the mouse over the VLC GUI. Similarly, I can open
VirtualBox, but as soon as I mouse over its GUI the system crashes.

Every time the system crashes, I get kicked back to the GDM login
screen.

If there are any logs that would help out, let me know and I'll dig them
up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574781] Re: NEC XV17 1280x960 resolution can't be set

2010-07-28 Thread Kris Holt
Lucky me, I struck gold!

Here's the solution...

Within /etc/X11/xorg.conf change the following line

Virtual 1280 960

to

Virtual 1920 1200

to increase monitor resolution selections offered within the Gnome
Monitor settings.

HERE's the GOLD

Add this line

Driver "nv"

after the line

Identifier  "Configured Video Device"

The use of the nv graphics device driver and the Virtual setting lets my
old monitor trace to orgasmic highs!!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 133060] Re: Synaptic touchpad fails to register some of the taps for tap-to-click

2010-06-03 Thread Kris
Josh, follow the steps given by Valentin Neacsu (posted 2007-09-01)
The file to modify is in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-1.2.2/src/synaptics.c
just after the line 2518 where it says:

 Bool inside_active_area;

 /* update hardware state in shared memory */
 if (shm)
 {
shm->x = hw->x;
shm->y = hw->y;
shm->z = hw->z;
 ...

Now it should look like:

Bool inside_active_area;

if (hw->x == 1 && hw->y == 5855)
{
hw->numFingers = 0;
hw->fingerWidth = 0;
hw->z = 0;
hw->x = HIST(0).x;
hw->y = HIST(0).y;
}

/* update hardware state in shared memory */
if (shm)
{
shm->x = hw->x;
shm->y = hw->y;
shm->z = hw->z;

It works for me and hopefully it will work for you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 350327] Re: vinagre connects but appears that I cannot start anything on remote desktop

2009-09-01 Thread Kris
Stumbled upon this bug... and i have only a "me too" to add. I tried
disabling Compiz on the remote machine, and that works fine. But if
Compiz is enabled on the remote system and viagre is used to view the
desktop of the remote system, the client does not refresh (although the
actual remote system is responding to the commands... but the client is
in a blind mode).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383209] Re: Mouse cursor wraps around current screen when animated using Xinerama

2009-08-14 Thread Kris Willis
After having just upgraded my cards to a pair of 9600GTs, I can confirm
that this bug also exists in the 180.44 drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383209] Re: Mouse cursor wraps around current screen when animated using Xinerama

2009-06-17 Thread Kris Willis
Pete, unfortunately my two cards are a FX 5200 and 7300 LE so the new
beta drivers are not designed for them from what I have read.

I have just tried dragging a window while my cursor is stuck in a loop
and I can move the window to my other screens along with the cursor -
But because while dragging, the cursor changes from animated to a static
clenched fist, this further points to the animation being the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383209] [NEW] Mouse cursor wraps around current screen when animated using Xinerama

2009-06-03 Thread Kris Willis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I'm running a 3 screen setup over two Nvidia cards using Xinerma. When
the cursor is animating it can not be moved from the screen that it is
currently on, when attempting to drag it to another screen it wraps
around to the other side of the current screen and continues to do so
until the cursor changes back to a static one.

This bug was not present in 8.10 and has appeared since upgrading to
9.04.
