[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1950088] Re: jammy: noveau driver hangs for minutes when Firefox is started (live cd/usb, MacBookPro6, 2)

2021-11-07 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
According to Apple Mac OS X info this hardware is as follows:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
CPU: 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
RAM: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
GPU: Intel HD Graphics, 288 MB

The hardware *also* has NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M connected (according to
OS X self-diagnostics) via 16x PCIe and it has 256 MB of RAM (Mac OS X
cannot tell if this is dedicated RAM or part of system RAM like with
integrated intel graphics).

I believe that the OS X automaticaly switches between these GPUs
according to system needs. I would guess that this is also tried by
Jammy livecd and it hangs. I guess for this old hardware, automatically
turning off the NVIDIA GPU and using just the Intel Graphics could be a
good option if the switching is not stable.

According to /proc/cpuinfo the Linux kernel successfully run the CPU up
to 3.1 GHz so CPU frequency control did work absolutely fine.

All the above tests were done with jammy nightly build from date
2021-11-05 obtained here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntukylin/daily-
live/current/ and I did write the ISO image to USB memory stick using
Ubuntu "Startup Disk Creator" software. I know that some newer MacBooks
no longer support booting from USB memory simply by holding down ALT
while booting the computer but for this hardware that still appears to
work just fine.

2021-11-07 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Here's the full journalctl log for livecd debugging session I reported
above.

It appears that nautilus was totally hanging because I failed to ever
open any file manager windows even after waiting for a long time.
Firefox did eventually start and started to work until I tried to open
file picker to attach a file to this bug - after that Firefox never
recovered either.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1950088] [NEW] jammy: noveau driver hangs for minutes when Firefox is started (live cd/usb, MacBookPro6, 2)

2021-11-07 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

I tried to use nightly build of Ubuntu 22.04 (jammy) on an old MacBook
Pro and if I start with failsafe graphics everything seems to work
really well. However, if I boot with default livecd configuration the
GPU will hang when I try to launch Firefox.

According to journalctl logs it appears that noveau driver or kernel DRM
hangs for a long time and the computer appears totally frozen. I can
still switch to terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Fn-F3 and waiting a couple
of minutes. Waiting for a long time (maybe 10 minutes) the system
appears to work correctly again without rebooting the system.

It seems to me that fix
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/commit/cfc5e5040c934 is
the correct one. Is it possible to reproduce the crash with that one
patch applied even without all the other proposed fixes?

Possible problem caused by incorrect physical dimensions:
The default mouse cursor is huge (e.g. on desktop). However, most applications
have normal sized cursor while the cursor hovers above the application.

According to the LG spec (https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-43UD79-B-4k-
uhd-led-monitor) the monitor pixel pitch is 0.2451 x 0.2451 mm so the
actual panel size should be 941.184 x 529.416 mm instead of reported
"600mm x 340mm".

The monitor is connected via Nvidia GTX 1060 (6 GB) in case it makes a
difference.

Also, this monitor has BGR subpixel structure and it seems that every
application will incorrectly default to RGB subpixel structure. I'm not
sure if this information is supposed to be available via xrandr.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1803353] Re: Display freezes (possible i915 freeze/hang)

2018-11-14 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Extra information: sudo kill -9 via ssh connection
did restore the display in working order without restarting the system
so I'm pretty sure this is caused by some kind of hang caused by xorg
process. Plain kill without -9 did not do anything, though.

Perhaps this is caused by some race conditition while xorg is keeping
some locks which cause keyboard not to work (e.g. Alt+Ctrl+F1) and the
display does not update.

After saying that, the system seems to be in some weird state where
pretty much all my old X client processess are still running (e.g.
Chrome, Opera, Thunderbird) even though the original xorg process does
not exists anymore. Thunderbird seems to be eating 100% of a single
core.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1803353] [NEW] Display freezes (possible i915 freeze/hang)

2018-11-14 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Xorg suddenly stops updating the display and CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work.
The issue happens randomly and does not seem to be related to content
being rendered. This time the display hang occurred while I was typing
in gnome-terminal.

I can successfully ssh into the system from another computer and run
ubuntu-bug xorg while the display is frozen.

Disconnecting the display port cable and reconnecting does not
successfully restore the image. However, after disconnecting the cable
and reconnecting, the monitor never resumed from DPMS suspend so the
signal emitted did in fact change when I disconnected the cable.

The problem occurs both with official lowlatency Ubuntu kernel and
custom kernel built from vanilla kernel sources. I haven't found a way
to deduce if this is in reality caused by kernel, xorg or the hardware.
However, considering that this happens with many different kernel
versions, I'd assume this is caused by xorg, instead.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1555055] [NEW] lndir behavior does not match documentation

2016-03-09 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

$ mkdir -p a/1/2
$ touch a/1/2/foo
$ lndir a b
b: No such file or directory
$ mkdir b
$ lndir a b
a: No such file or directory

However, the alternative syntax for lndir still works

cd b
lndir ../a

Either lndir documentation (both usage and man page) needs to be fixed
or the actual behavior needs to be fixed to match the documentation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018706] Re: Intel X4500 display driver crashes X when loading an URL in Firefox

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
I can reproduce the Firefox random color body text issue only once after
loading the URL in a new tab. If the issue does not show immediately, it
will show never. To reproduce, I just close the tab, open a new one with
CTRL+N and paste the URL into the address bar again. After howering the
drawer, the body text color randomly changes on first hower.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018706] Re: Intel X4500 display driver crashes X when loading an URL in Firefox

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
I cannot get a screenshot about the issue with randomly changing text or
background color because the Firefox seems to redraw itself if I press
Alt+Print Screen. I can reproduce the issue with Firefox
13.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1, too, but it's much harder to reproduce
with it and usually only the color of the links on page is incorrect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018706] Re: Intel X4500 display driver crashes X when loading an URL in Firefox

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
After taking the photo of the screen, I was able to get correct
rendering by simply raising another window partially above the Firefox
window. As I'm running compiz, Firefox should have no reason to redraw
itself in that case but something fixed the rendering (I'd guess that
because the window lost focus, Firefox un-howered the drawer on the page
and this triggered redraw).

Should I open a new bug for the Firefox text rendering issue (random
body text color on that web page)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018706] Re: Intel X4500 display driver crashes X when loading an URL in Firefox

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Even with drivers from x-updates PPA, I'm seeing a rendering issue with
Firefox nightly. Steps to reproduce:

1. Open the URL

 in a new tab.
2. Hower the mouse cursor above top right "Find a Driver" draver on the page.

Expected result:

The draver should slide down and the page should otherwise stay as is.

Actual result:

The draver slides down and the main content area randomly changes color.
I once got dark green letters on pure white, another time it was dark
red letters on pure white. I'll test if I can get a screenshot.

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Reading the /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel/changelog.gz I'd
guess the fix might be commit 2eec53d0b9232970fe3d03ce6c8940ebeea44bee
(uxa: Default to using TILING_X for pixmaps.)

The commit message says that it should fix GPU Hung for G31 chipset but
perhaps the same issue is triggered here.

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
The crash does not happen after installing PPA from
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/. I'd suggest
checking the differences between the official driver and the version in
the PPA (or promote the PPA version as official, if that's acceptable).

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
I'd guess that the stack trace in the previous comment is NOT related to
the crash because it seems to happen during X initialization (does not
happen usually, just this random event) and X does not crash
immediately, only after loading the URL in the bug description.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1018706] [NEW] Intel X4500 display driver crashes X when loading an URL in Firefox

2012-06-27 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install Ubuntu 10.04 on a machine with an Intel X4500 (non-"HD" variant)
display adapter.
2. Launch Firefox (I tested 13.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1 and latest nightly
build as of 2012-06-28)
3. Open URL

(WARNING: this will crash your gnome session if you're running on Intel X4500).

Expected result:

The web page at the URL should be displayed.

Actual result:

X crashes and gdm relaunches the greeting screen. As far as I can see,
the crash happens even if Firefox does not run any JavaScript or Plugins
so I guess it's related to some font or background image on the page.

Additional information:

The issue cannot be reproduced with unstable Google Chrome so I guess
this is triggered by Firefox and X.org combination. The fact that this
is reproducible with the latest nightly build of Firefox
(http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-
trunk/firefox-16.0a1.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2) suggests that this is
not related just single version of Firefox.

I haven't been able to create minimal test case and I don't know how
long amd.com will continue to serve the exact same web page that
triggers the issue.

I haven't tested with a machine running Intel X4500HD but I've tested
with a machine running on Q35 chipset (which I believe has Intel X3000
display adapter) and it does not crash. From previous experiences
between Intel X4500 and Intel X4500HD, I'd guess that this does not
crash X4500HD either.

dmesg shows a hint:
[233451.981521] [drm:i915_gem_do_execbuffer] *ERROR* Failed to pin buffer 1 of

/var/log/gdm/:0.log.* contains following hint:

Execbuffer fails to pin. Estimate: 120976384. Actual: 60496384.
Available: 126402560

Fatal server error:
Failed to submit batchbuffer: No space left on device

However, I have no idea which device is full. Mounted devices have plenty of
free space:

$ df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb1 30G 20G 8,4G 71% /
none 3,9G 340K 3,9G 1% /dev
none 3,9G 1,8M 3,9G 1% /dev/shm
none 3,9G 232K 3,9G 1% /var/run
none 3,9G 0 3,9G 0% /var/lock
none 3,9G 0 3,9G 0% /lib/init/rw
/dev/sda1 449G 303G 124G 72% /home

As well as memory:

$ free -m
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 7810 6328 1482 0 1372 2319
-/+ buffers/cache: 2636 5173
Swap: 7444 0 7444

In case it matters, I have following displays connected to the display
adapter:

HDMI (primary display): LG L2000CN running 1600x1200@60Hz
VGA (secondary display on the right): DELL 1907FP running 1024x1024@60Hz

I have pretty much default Gnome desktop with compiz with some tweaks
set with CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm). The system seems to be
very stable except for this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 703673] [NEW] Display fails to correctly initialize if keyboard is not connected during boot

2011-01-16 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Steps to reproduce:

1. Shut down the computer if running.
2. Disconnect USB keyboard connector (it does not matter if USB mouse is
connected or not)
3. Boot Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Expected results:

System boots up normally, one cannot login with GDM until a USB keyboard
is connected (because password cannot be typed without a keyboard).

Actual results:

System boots up to black screen / invalid scan frequency / DPMS power
off / disconnected DVI port (I don't know because I cannot diagnose the
actual problem - at least my display goes to sleep and does not alert
about invalid scan frequency). Hitting CTRL+ALT+F1 (or any other virtual
console) does not end up getting the display up. I can still reboot the
system with Alt+SysRq+B at will if I connect an USB keyboard..

Hardware:
Motherboard: Intel DG45ID
Display: HP ZR24w connected with a single link DVI connector running at
1920x1200@60 (correctly detected if booted with keyboard attached, uses KMS at
least in normal boot process)
Keyboard: Logitech "Deluxe 250" (basic 105 button USB keyboard) normally
connected via HP ZR24w
Mouse: Logitech RX 250 connected via HP ZR24w

Note that the problem occurs only if boot without USB keyboard connected
at all so the problem is not using the display as USB hub. Also note
that this motherboard does not have any legacy connectors (IDE or PS/2)
and I've tried with both USB legacy support enabled and disabled.

I'd expect that the system could boot up without display, keyboard or
mouse and any of those could be hot-plugged in. Perhaps I've
misunderstood the currently supported features?

The system had originally a CRT display connected via DVI-I/VGA adapter
and has been upgraded to current display with DVI-D connection.
