[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1479913] Re: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol
I agree with you all and don't wanted to be mean with Alberto or whoever else. I really don't care of who is guilty (if there is ever such a "who"), but what concerns me is that from the outside there have been no sign from Canonical, the kernel team or whatever to at least acknowledge that what happened here was a serious problem. Perhaps these discussions are happening internally, but meanwhile the community is left in the dark, wondering if the right people are at least aware of this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer-updates in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1479913 Title: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1479913/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1479913] Re: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol
I don't understand why everyone thanks Canonical here. I mean, they messed up the SRU kernel process and broke a big number of stable desktops in the wild (including some LTS users). An now everyone is saying everything is great &all now that an update was pushed? But did you think of those casual users that are now stuck on a black screen or on a login loop and won't be able to upgrade their computer without an external help? Come on, I can't be the only one to think what happened is very serious for a distribution targeted at everyone. No, what would seem professional to me now would be the publication of a post-mortem on this issue, detailing actions and changes to existing processes in order to make sure this kind of situation won't happen again in the future. Then it would restore some faith that Ubuntu can be safely used by "human beings" and not just geeks.
Well, the new FGLRX is only in proposed, so most users are still affected. The only sane option in my point of view would be to release a new kernel without the patch that broke things originally. Don't forget that the fix here does nothing for people that installed FGLRX directly from the AMD website... @Giacomo: here, with a HD 7970, I'm stuck on the login screen (I log-in, the screen flicker and I'm back at the login screen). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1479913] Re: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol
Kernel 3.19.0-26.28 was pushed as a security update to all Ubuntu users today (it is no longer in the, disabled by default, "proposed" repository). This means all FGLRX users on Vivid (and those that installed 14.04.2) will lose their graphical environment as soon as they reboot. The only workaround is to select the former kernel in Grub. Patching the DKMS module manually is possible, but we can't expect the typical Ubuntu user to do such a thing. I don't know who is to blame, but I hope I'm not the only one to think this is a serious situation. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1479913 Title: SRU request: fglrx.ko fails because of backported GPL-only 'pci_ignore_hotplug' symbol To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1479913/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782]
I put the old WIFI card back in the laptop for testing (nb. everything works on Windows, the card does not seem to be defective) Without MSI: Compiz starts but the desktop is a fixed image. I see no special error in .xsession-errors. With MSI: Compiz and Unity 3D start. With or without MSI, Unity 3D starts when putting the other WIFI card in. I should add that, with or without MSI, I get regular network disconnections (both WIFI cards, the replacement one used to work well with Linux on its former laptop). So yes, enabling MSI is a win on this laptop. But I don't quite get why the WIFI card can affect the GPU. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 633535] [NEW] [Maverick] Middle buttons do the same as left buttons
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (I'm not sure this is a synaptic bug, sorry if I'm wrong) My laptop have 2 rows of 3 click buttons. Better than a long explanation, here is a picture: http://hpfansite.com/images/2008/12 /8730w-touchpad.jpg It used to work well on Karmic and Lucid, but on Maverick (up to date and also with the last daily-live) the middle button of each row now perform a left click instead of a middle click (trust me, this is a huge regression, especially when browsing the Web and when copy/pasting with a middle clik). I tried xev and it returns that both left and middle buttons send the "button 1" signal. Of course, the middle button send "button 2" on Lucid. I plugged a mouse and it's middle click worked as expected. So this seems to be specific to build-in buttons. This is an important bug for me as an Ubuntu enthusiast because all my class mates (~200 students) have the same computer... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] [ubuntu 10.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
I already proposed B (via a special patched xserver version which should replace current xserver when installing fglrx from repositories). I think it's the easier/better solution: No need to worry about potentials regressions on nvidia, intel or whatever else. The patch is ready NOW, this just need an update to fglrx dependencies and the upload of the 'xserver-fglrx-fix' (or whatever name you prefer). For some packaging hero it's surely possible to build the patched xserver from the main source package along with other xserver packages, so the patched version will always be sync with further xserver updates. So AFAIK we basically need 2 updates. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
As I said, this is NOT fixed. The use of fglrx is still necessary for R800+ ATI card and for nearly all laptops powered by ATI because of no power management with the free driver. This bug was filed against fglrx-installer so, please, stop saying that this is fixed. For those who know some ATI guys, are they going to work on this issue? This bug is nearly 1 year old so I'm confident that the answer is "no". As this is an important desktop usability issue, is there a possibility to include a xserver from one of the 2 ppa in, at least, the universe repository? Just name it xserver-fglrx-fix and add it as a dependence to the fglrx-installer. It seems a good solution to me because here we do not patch the default xserver (the one that is shipped by default) so no need to worry about regressions for other users, only fglrx users will install it. Those packages had enough testing and both seem to be equivalent. For the memory lick, I never noticed it (using k0ekk0ek's ppa for more than 6 months) so this is a "small" lick that may not be noticed by most of users I think. And I'm sure that the benefit of a fluid user experience is worth the trouble. -- [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
