[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 787540] Re: ATI card fan stays on full after resume from suspend

2012-05-29 Thread Oliver Joos
I tested it on Linux Mint with updated kernel 3.2.0-24-gerneric #39-Ubuntu
(x86_64) - it works perfectly!
Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 787540] Re: ATI card fan stays on full after resume from suspend

2012-04-11 Thread Oliver Joos
I was affected too with Natty. Now I confirm, that this bug still exists
with Ubuntu Precise 12.04 beta 2. I tested it with a 32-bit LiveCD-iso
on a bootable USB stick.

When I power up the system, the fan on the graphics board starts at full
speed. Soon it slows down when the BIOS checks memory, harddrives ect.
When I suspend Ubuntu (standby S3) then all fans stop as expected. But
upon resume the graphics board fan starts and stays at full speed
forever. Seems that the BIOS sets some dynamic fan speed flag when
powered-up, but the radeon driver does not when system resumes.

My Ubuntu uses the opensource driver radeon. The affected
xserver-xorg-video-ati has version 1:6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubuntu2
My hardware is a HIS Radeon X850 Pro (AGP). sudo lspci shows:
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI R480
[Radeon X850Pro]

I'd be glad to help with further tests or infos!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782] Re: [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200

2011-09-18 Thread Oliver Joos
I use Ubuntu since 2005 and recently also see rendering problems with my
ATI X600 and others like X1200. But I never saw problems like your
screenshots. I recommend you to create a new Ubuntu bug report (by
executing ubuntu-bug in a terminal) or directly upstream on
https://bugs.freedesktop.org where the graphics system is hosted.

Meanwhile you could try to:
- boot with the kernel option nomodeset (press F6 on boot menu screen)
- login with Ubuntu classic (without effects), or uninstall Compiz effects
completely by executing sudo apt-get remove compiz-core in a terminal
- downgrade to the latest Long Term Support release Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 240738] Re: syndaemon sometimes fails to disable the touchpad

2011-07-14 Thread Oliver Joos
I just marked another 3 duplicates and agree that many people could be
affected.

I tested a Samsung SF510 with an Elantech touchpad where this bug really
hurts: its palm detection is very unreliable. Finger clicks are detected
if a palm is 3 mm *ABOVE* the touchpad surface! Even worse: the
clickable left/right buttons are part of the touchpad! Their surface
does move the pointer too and makes them nearly unusable. So users are
forced to enable tapping to click, staggering again into this bug while
typing.

Many Samsung laptops or Asus EeePCs have Elantech touchpads and might be
affected. Fixing this bug could ease such problems with bad touchpad
drivers or hardware.

@admin: please consider to raise the importance of this bug.

Have a look at the related bug 240738 and my comment 27 about Elantech

2011-06-25 Thread Oliver Joos
I confirm that patch from comment 64 works on a Samsung SF510. But a
right click is very hard to accomplish, also after applying the diff
from comment 94. Tweaking its coordinates did not help either. But I
found that right click gets easier if the pressed area is just big
enough e.g. by holding the finger nearly parallel to the surface of the
touchpad.

Thanks anyway! The patch finally allows that the touchpad is disabled
while typing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657964] Re: [RV380] X-Server segmentation fault (signal 11) when totem or xine render a video beyond screen dimensions (using overlay mode due to nomodeset kernel option)

2011-05-03 Thread Oliver Joos
Upto Lucid I had no problems with UMS (fast stable 2D+3D), but many
problems with KMS. That's why this bug has hurt me quite much in
Maverick.

Now in Natty it's the opposite: with KMS the only problem is video
playback tearing (not in sync with vblank), but without KMS there are
severe redraw problems in 2D (at least with Composite enabled) and 3D is
unusably slow (due to new Gallium driver, I guess)

In short: I was not able to reproduce this bug with Natty (no wonder
with all these changes in gfx subsystem). So I'll skip Maverick, leave
UMS and overlay mode, and hope that despite KMS and textured video it
will soon be possible to stay in sync with vblank again...

Today the same segmentation fault occurred in my up-to-date Lucid
10.04.1 (installed on HD)! While xine was playing a divx video I changed
the monitor layout to dual screen and moved the xine window to the
second screen (right of the main screen). As soon as the window got a
few pixels too much right (outside of the second screen) the X-Server
crashed. Looking e.g. at line 6 of backtrace make me think that this is
the same problem.

I use the brand-new iso released today to boot Ubuntu 10.10. By default
no crash occurs. I see this bug only if Kernel parameter nomodeset is
added. Unfortunately kernel mode setting still makes kernel freezes on
most ATI systems I know including mine. Dual screen, googleearth, sleep-
resume only work reliable if nomodeset is added. This bug report is NOT
about problems with kernel mode setting!

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. boot with Kernel parameter nomodeset
  2. add universe to package repositories and reload package lists
  3. double-click a video (see below for a crashing example video)
  4. let the assistant install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
  5. close totem, then double-click the video again
  6. press F for fullscreen
  7. press ctrl+R to zoom in

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657964] Re: [RV380] X-Server segfault (signal 11) after zooming a fullscreen video in totem or xine if booted with nomodeset

2010-10-12 Thread Oliver Joos
The crash is reproducible with the final LiveCD of 10.10, zooming into a
x264-Video. Zooming out (image gets smaller) works. Other video formats
(xvid in .avi or .ogm) do not crash.

xine chooses xv as video_out plugin. With video_out=opengl the crash
does not occur, because zooming is not possible then. With
video_out=xvmc xine crashes the x-server immediately after its start,
even without a video!!

So far I guess:
As totem is also affected, it seems to be a problem with an underlying
x264-library feeding reckless dimensions through xv to the the driver
xserver-xorg-video-ati, which then crashes. If this is true, then both the
x264-library and the xserver-xorg-video-ati would need a fix, while the latter
is more important to avoid future crashes caused by problematic libraries. I'll
try to find the guilty file by mixing versions of Maverick and Lucid, where
this bug did never occur.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657964] [NEW] X-Server segfault (signal 11) upon zooming fullscreen video in totem or xine while booting with nomodeset

2010-10-10 Thread Oliver Joos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

4. let the assistant install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
5. close totem, then double-click the video again
6. press F for fullscreen
7. press ctrl+R to zoom in
= X-Server crashes

My laptop graphics adapter:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility
X600]

A video that crashes is downloadable here: http://kai3.tv/cc2/CC-
Zwei-47-NRWTV.mp4

In Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 this crash did never occur!

Excerpt of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after the crash:

2010-05-30 Thread Oliver Joos
I confirm, this bug also happens on Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 (with
wine-1.0.1). I have a HP nx8220 with ATI X600 graphic card and have no
other problems with X. Compiz and Kernel-Mode-Setting are disabled on my
system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 372612] Re: Wrong keyboard settings are restored after resume

2010-03-14 Thread Oliver Joos
Now it's clear: this bug is *not* a duplicate of bug #427168. This one
is about key binding being reset, 427168 is about keyboard rate/delay
being reset.

The same confusion was on gnome.org while discussing both fixes
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610245). Meanwhile chances
are good that this bug is also fixed in latest Lucid daily build. So
please check and comment if you are affected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427168] Re: usb keyboard settings reset on plugin

2010-01-28 Thread Oliver Joos
I opened a new bug on freedesktop.org and summarized all facts/links:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26293

I found and marked another 2 duplicates here on Launchpad. And even on
gnome.org there were already 2 duplicates, where I then added a comment:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=585222#c7

Thank you for your kind feedback, Kevin and radostyle!
Now let's hope, a fix will make it into Lucid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427168] Re: usb keyboard settings reset on plugin

2010-01-27 Thread Oliver Joos
@Kevin: It is difficult to decide where to report this bug. But I agree, we
should do this.
@radostyle: glad to hear it works for you, too! Whether the problems with
modmap files are related or not, we should treat this bug isolated, because the
fixes might be different.

IMHO xset is a candidate to fix:
  1 xset r rate 300 36 , unplug/replug keyboard , xset q = delay,rate=660,25
2 after replugging external keyboard becomes 660,25, but internal one stays
at 300,36
  3 replugging while in a console (ctrl+alt+F1) doesn't change anything -
unless I switch to X (ctrl+alt+F7)!
  4 xset r rate 300 39 , xset q = 300,40 (this is perhaps a hardware
limitation)

But this all looks like xset stores the values in the keyboard hardware
only and sometimes chooses the wrong (external) one to read them from.
If that's right then only gconftool-2 stores these values reliably. Then
an udev-rule calling gconftool-2 would be a valid fix, if that's
possible at all. I found a solution for a similar issue here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1282582.html

Anyway if you agree, I will report this issue to gnome.org AND
freedesktop.org with links to each other, so that well-informed people
can help to decide where to fix it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427168] Re: usb keyboard settings reset on plugin

2010-01-23 Thread Oliver Joos
As a workaround you may just set the rate again with the command:
  gconftool-2 -s -t int /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/rate RATE
To get the current RATE you can do:
  gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/rate

Each time your keyboard is slow again, you can invoke the first command
in a Terminal. Or you can add it as user-defined applet to your gnome
panel. Or you can add it in gnome-volume-properties as an action to be
taken whenever a keyboard is (re-)detected - this is fully automatic
then and works best for me. gnome-volume-properties can be found in
gnome menu System - Preferences. If not, you may have to install
gnome-volume-manager first.

The commands have to be on one line only, so try:

gconftool-2 -s -t int /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/rate 38

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427168] Re: usb keyboard settings reset on plugin

2010-01-23 Thread Oliver Joos
My comment #13 does not solve but hide the problem - it is a work-
around. The kernel/driver/Xorg is supposed to resend rate and delay when
a keyboard hardware lost them due to power loss. I'd call it chaotic to
leave this to a user-space program.

Me too, hope a proper fix will make it into 10.04 (LTS). You can help at
least by adding yourself as affected by this bug. If more people are
affected, we could add this bug to the 100-papercut-project.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 372612] Re: Wrong keyboard settings are restored after resume

2010-01-20 Thread Oliver Joos
I am not sure if my comment above targets the same issue as this bug.
This bug is about wrong settings after RESUME. If unplug and re-plug the
keyboard does also trigger this bug, then my previous comment is valid
and we could mark this bug as duplicate of Bug #427168.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 427168] Re: usb keyboard settings reset on plugin

2010-01-16 Thread Oliver Joos
I have exactly this problem in Karmic (up-to-date) with my wireless
external keyboard (Logitech). I think there are keyboards that forget
these settings when connection is lost. Sometimes this also occurs after
a sleep-resume without unplugging the keyoard.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461014] [NEW] X crashes with video overlay on secondary screen (ATI X600)

2009-10-26 Thread Oliver Joos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

After a fresh install of 9.10 Karmic release candidate I see crashes
of X I never saw before with Karmic alpha, Jaunty or earlier. I use a
Laptop HP Compaq nx8220 and an external CRT monitor right of it. When
dragging a video-playing totem window to the secondary screen, X crashes
immediately and gdm restarts.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461014] Re: X crashes with video overlay on secondary screen (ATI X600)

2009-10-26 Thread Oliver Joos
Thanks for the quick response!

Further symptoms:
Strange is that the first time after a (re)start of X it works. But when
closing totem, waiting a few seconds, starting it again and dragging its window
to the right then X crashes as soon as the video content is supposed to jump to
the secondary screen.

Further config details:
I disabled Compiz and did not enable KMS (Kernel Mode Setting). I assume the
default xorg.conf uses VideoOverlay (and not TexturedVideo) because when it
works the first time I see no horizontal size limit of 1536 or 1920 (typical
for TexturedVideo).
