[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-05-13 Thread Rabit rabit
So after 3 months I'm back here to check what's up with this bug. I have been
using Windows in the meantime.
Seems like not much going on here. No solution yet?

Ok someone suggessted kernel 3.8.8 which I haven't tried. But since I've
tried all kernel 3.2.x up to 3.6.x, I'm a bit reluctant to try 3.8.8.
Can someone else confirm this kernel version fixes this bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-05 Thread Rabit rabit
Imre Gergely,
Not necessarily true about older hardware doesn't seem to freeze.

Mine is Core2Duo with Asus Mainboard and Nvidia Geforce 7600GT. 2GB DDR2
ram. Running fine with Windows 7, but when booted with Ubuntu it's like
playing russian roullette.

I was about to try ubuntu 10.04 when I read your comment. sigh As I
remember it, the older 10.04 doesn't have this problem. But seems like
it happens on your systems too.

I have tried the #713 fix (with 3.5.0-24 kernel) initially seems to
worked really well for about 1 week, then started to randomly freeze
again even up to 3 4 times a day. Now that I think about it, could it be
caused by a regular system update that brought back those freezes?

I have yet another system update just yesterday, now it seems to be working
well again for two days
I'm running 3.5.0-25-generic kernel now (if these kernels had anything to do
with those freezes at all)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-03 Thread Rabit rabit
Hi,

Re: fix #713

Almost two weeks after applying the fix from #713. Here's what I find:
Initially things seemed to run ok. It was stable solid and smooth. But those
freezes
eventually happened again.

Once it even freezed not long after I restarted the computer, even before
running
any applications except probably firefox.

This freezes are very random. Some day I get by without a freeze, but some day
I get several freezes in one day.
Before the #713 fix, I got a lot of freeze after playing videos (MP4 or
streaming) or MP3s. After #713 it gets better I think. But I still almost
always get a freeze after running virtualbox (win7) in ubuntu.

So #713 doesn't fix the problem for me.
This is really frustrating. Considering ditching ubuntu now... Any
recommendation what Linux/ubuntu version?

2013-02-24 Thread Rabit rabit
@Joe Carey, sorry about that, I thought you mention you still have the
logs so I assume different bugs. Cause this bug doesn't generate logs as
far as i know.

And Re: #713 fix,
After several days use my system seems to be more stable, I'm able to play
videos with relatively no problems. I think it did freeze only once after
playing videos/music.
But, almost everytime I run Virtualbox (after several minutes/hours) it does
freeze. Same symptom. So there's improvement, but not fixed yet, the bug still
there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-20 Thread Rabit rabit
@Brian Semrad and @Joe Carey, and others who are new here, please read
bug description.

This bug is about a *complete system lock-up*. No other TTYs can be
started. Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution
is hard reset. This is NOT a compiz problem.

Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
and Intel graphics.

If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the mouse
or use the keyboard, file another bug.

If you can still work with your system after crash/freeze or you can see
the logs than this is not the same bug we're talking about in this
thread.

In my case when it freeze, it is dead completely. No logs, no mouse no
keyboards (keyboard lights always blinks and if the sound card was
playing something, the sounds will loop). The only solution is to hard
reset, or just wait after a while (15-20secs) my system will reboot
itself automatically.

And to update Re #713:
After applying the fix, it's been smooth and solid now for me. No problem no
freezes. In fact I feel the system seems faster and smoother.
Still, fingers crossed, it has only been a couple of days with no freeze. (Very
encouraging considering before the fix, freeze could happen several times a day
in random)

Re. #713
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/993187/comments/713

I did the upgrade, and so far looks good. Installation went smooth.
Had to choose Previous version from Grub menu because it default to
3.6.3. and manually choose 3.5.0-23. All went well after the upgrade,
vga driver, virtualbox and everything else works fine.

I've thrown a lot of videos and musics and streaming. Ran chrome and
Firefox and youtube (which usually causes the freeze) with no freeze at
all today all day.

It is too early of course to conclude anything, but I see a glimmer of light at
the end of the tunnel heheh
Cross fingers...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-16 Thread Rabit rabit
@rsoika,
I don't think it is ivy bridge related because my hardware is not ivy bridge.
I'm using older Core2Duo cpu and Geforce 7600GT with older intel chipset. I
forgot what it's called but definitely not sandy or ivy bridge. It is a legacy
time tested hardware that shouldn't have had bugs problems (in theory).

This bug is so random it's really hard to pinpoint the problem.
The last three days it happened several times a day. But today, actually from
last night, I haven't had any freeze at all, almost 24 hours.
This time, I've played all kind of video music and streaming videos such as
youtube with no freeze which usually caused to freeze almost definitely. But
not today, I don't know why. I didn't do any update at all.

Must be a very very difficult bug to track I think.

Yes. it got to the point that I'm afraid to run virtualbox or watch youtube or
play mp4 or music.
It's ridiculous.

I understand that bug exists and will always exist. Even on windows or
mac. But this bug is too critical to be realease as LTS. This is like a
beta version.

Now what I want to know is:
- What percentage of ubuntu users and other linux users actually experiencing
this bug.
- I'm on 32bit ubuntu, is the 64 bit version any better?
- This doesn' seem happen only on geforce or ati. It also happens on IntelHD
graphics. Is this correct. If so then it probably has nothing to do with
graphic driver.
- Is it true certain kernel version doesn't have this bug? I read some comment
like downgrading to 3.0 version actually fix it? What would be the problem
with downgrading to 3.0 kernel?
- Is anyone actually acknowledging this bug and currently fixing it?
- Does it also happen on Mint?

2013-01-06 Thread Rabit rabit
I wonder if this is a ubuntu problem or kernel problem or driver
problem.

If this bug is kernel or driver problem, then other linux distro also
suffer the same problem. Does anybody know if other linux have the same
problem?. We may just not hear it because there are not too many bug
reports on other distros as there are less users compared to Ubuntu and
Mint.

For those who move to Mint, I'd like to know if they still have the bug
or not. Or they just move the bug report to Mint bugs reporting.

But this bug and especially the lack of acknowledgment from upstair is
getting ridiculous.

I wonder what percentage of ubuntu/linux users actually experiencing
this hard lock bug. Is it huge like more than 20% or small like 0.0002%
users?

This is such a crucial bug for me that I'm actually thinking about
moving to other system.

Many times although not all the time, I previously play some video, either MP4

Lots of times it also happens while soundcard is playing something. And hard
crash happens with the sound keep repeating until it reboots.

Asus Mainboard, Core2Duo, Geforce 7600, 2GB ram.
Nvidia 3.04.64 and kernel 3.6.3-030603-generic

I still don't know whether this is a kernel or ubuntu problem only.
I kind of suspect the problem has to do with driver (network or sound or
nvidia).

I also update nvidia driver to ver 3.04.64

My system dual boots with Win7 which works just fine in Win7..

Martin, I notice you're using kernel 3.5.0-18-generic.
Since I'm using kernel version higher than yours,
would you suggest I downgrade to that version? Kinda skeptical though.

I've tried 3.3.6, also 3.4.x which didn't help either. But i've never
tried 3.5.x

Can anybody else confirm that kernel 3.5.0-18 solves the problem?
Or doesn't solve it. Please do report.

And Yes... still happening.. Just crashed again.. Seems pretty random.
Can't see usefull logs either.

So is this ubuntu thing or kernel thing? I can't believe we still

So I make the jump and install kernel 3.6.3-030603-generic 5 days ago.
( I use the instruction from here

And also install a new Nvidia driver 3.04.64.

For about 5 days I didn't have any crash untill about 5 minutes ago.
Bummer.

It crashed again. the same crash. Keyboard blinking. Then after a while
finally reboots itself.

Wow. This is very frustrating. This time it crashed while I was moving my
mouse.
I wasn't playing any movie or songs. Although I did play some streaming videos
about an hour and again about 10 minutes before crashing. But nothing was
playing when it crashed.

h ubuntu sucks... (that statement is surprising coming from me... )

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-11-29 Thread Rabit rabit
Thanks Koopee,

As this crashing is still happening to me, actually it happened 5 minutes ago,
and twice yesterday too,
so I'm going to try 3.6.0 kernel. See if it helps for me too..

Fingers crossed.

Thx

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-11-24 Thread Rabit rabit
Today it happened again twice.

The first time today crashed while I was moving my mouse. Only firefox
opened, but earlier before that I did play something on youtube about an
hour before.

The second time happened just now, while I was playing a MP4 using VLC.
Only played for like 2 seconds than crashed.

Ubuntu 12.04 (always updated) (32bit)
3.4.0-030400-generic-pae
Core2Duo with Geforce 7600
Nvidia driver 304.64

I suspect (guess) sound card driver. How do I check which sound chip I
have and how to get an driver update if there's any?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-11-16 Thread Rabit rabit
*Update*

After about a week without crashes, I was beginning to think the bug was fixed.
But it happened again just a few minutes ago while I was playing a video from
cnet.
Hard crash, auto reboot after a while.

I notice when the video is playing, the last sound/voice kept repeating
when the system crash, like this guy on the video was saying the word
integral.. Then when my system crash the sound on my speaker is like
integral... integral...integral... integral...integral...
integral...integral... integral... kept on repeating until it reboots

3.4.0-030400-generic-pae

I'm losing faith on canonical... I was their biggest fan before.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-10-31 Thread Rabit rabit
Same thing here too..

Core2Duo Desktop
Nvidia 6600GT
2GB
Ubuntu 12.04 32bit (always updated)

Random crashes almost everyday, often when watching some videos or
youtube, but also crashes when I'm not doing any video at all. Yesterday
it crashed when I was scrolling some web page on firefox. This morning
when I was watching youtube. Seems like random actually. Someday I get
by without any crash.

It's pathetic really, because I have been a strong supporter of ubuntu,
and I've helped installing ubuntu on many friend's and family's
computers.. I've always brag how solid and stable ubuntu is. Now I feel
really bad for them.

Yesterday I decided to upgrade my kernel to 3.4. But no luck. Today it
crashes again.

When it crashes, the keyboard lights blinking. No mouse or keyboard or
ssh or telnet works. It will eventually restart itself after a half a
minute or so.

2012-10-31 Thread Rabit rabit
Does everyone here uses or runs the system CPU and/or Network indicator?
Or can someone confirm that your system also crash without the indicator
running?

I wonder if this is the culprit. See if it still happens when you
don't have the indicator running.
