[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511]
On Thu, Jul 28, 2011 at 6:39 PM, Christiansen 541...@bugs.launchpad.netwrote: As the upstream bugfixes is apparently only applied to the latest kernels (3.0) and demands drivers from xserver-xorg-video-intel never than 2.14 (2.15 is in Oneiric right now), reenabling the intel driver will only work for Oneiric (11.10) at present time. This is not true. The fix has been in the mainline kernel since 2.6.38-rc7. So if you're running Maverick (which uses the .38 kernel), you already have the patch. You just need to load the -intel driver instead of fbdev like you mentioned. This is what I am doing right now in fact. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 Title: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/541511/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 817814] [NEW] [i8xx] Re-enable -intel driver for i8xx chipsets in Oneiric
Public bug reported: Since Maverick, Ubuntu has enabled the fbdev driver by default instead of the -intel driver for i8xx chipsets because of bug 541511 and its cousins (cache-coherency; bug 27187 upstream [1]). This bug has been fixed upstream and applied to the mainline linux kernel since 2.6.38-rc7 with the commit agp/intel: Experiment with a 855GM GWB bit. As such, Oneiric should not contain the fbdev workaround since its 3.0 kernel contains the upstream patch. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
Sorry, I misspoke. Natty is the first release to contain the fix, not Maverick (Natty is on the .38 kernel; Maverick is on .35). So Lucid will not work OOTB (out-of-the-box). You need to disable KMS as indicated at [1]. Maverick ships with a workaround, so it works OOTB. Natty contains both the workaround and the upstream fix, so it works OOTB. You can disable the workaround by enabling the -intel driver as indicated at [2]; it will work normally because it also ships with the upstream fix in the kernel. Christiansen is just mentioning that since Oneiric contains the fix too, it should not also ship with the workaround. I've opened Bug 817814 to track this and will give a heads up to some of the devs. Those with i8xx chipsets on Oneiric can help by adding a comment to that bug whether or not Oneiric works using the -intel driver on i8xx chipsets. (Play a movie file in Totem or VLC and see if it freezes; also run it for a couple days and see if it freezes.) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
Nevermind. I'd forgotten, but found it again searching through my mailing lists: From [1]: In natty, we stopped Ubuntu development support for the 8xx chipset; these may still work ok with the -intel driver but we no longer field bug reports or backport fixes for them. This policy will continue in oneiric, but we'll reevaluate for oneiric+1. Meanwhile, please work with upstream directly for 8xx problems. axion: Huh?? KMS hasn't been enabled at the kernel-level and blacklisted in xorg-server in Lucid (actually, I think this is impossible). The patch in this bug report doesn't even do anything to KMS; it just forces writes in the GTT. I have a sneaking suspicion you're actually talking about the switch to the fbdev driver instead of the Intel driver in Maverick. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 613349] Re: CTR + ALT + F1 (actually all of the terminals) not working
What packages did you update to break this? It looks like you recently upgraded to the -24 kernel; does booting into the -23 kernel in GRUB fix the problem? Did you try switching VTs in the same session you filed this bug? There's no indication in the logs that a VT switch was requested. If you didn't try switching, please try again and then upload the output of dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Please also run 'sudo intel_reg_dumper intel_reg_dumper1.txt' on a fresh boot. Then try switching VTs and run 'sudo intel_reg_dumper intel_reg_dumper2.txt'. Then upload both files to this report. If you can find a working configuration (like using a different kernel), it'd be helpful if you could do the same procedure as above on that configuration too. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete ** Summary changed: - CTR + ALT + F1 (actually all of the terminals) not working + [gm45] CTR + ALT + F1 (actually all of the terminals) not working -- [gm45] CTR + ALT + F1 (actually all of the terminals) not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613349 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

If I allow the startup process to continue without interference to change options, I eventually end up with a blank screen, no response to mouse or keyboard except for ctrl-alt-del, which preforms a shutdown. ctrl-alt-f1 will not bring up a terminal either. When I turn on the 'nomodeset' boot option I can see the boot splash, can ESC out of it and see boot text. However, I get what appears to be corrupted, colored text for a split second and then kernel panic (caps scroll lock blinking) with black screen. The other options in the live boot option screen do not seem to make an appreciable difference. With my moderate amount of linux experience, I'm going to postulate that this is a graphics chipset driver issue because of the display corruption and the fact that 'nomodeset' at least improves the boot experience. The graphics chipset is an Intel chip: Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD Mobile Intel® GS45 Express Chipset I hope that I am in error in reporting this bug, but I have tried all the tricks that I could think of to get it to boot and have failed. - --- + --- Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat - Alpha amd64 (20100630.2) MachineType: Sony Corporation VPCY2190X Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.11.0-1ubuntu2

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605667] Re: Kernel Panic on Live USB Boot, Intel Graphics not working
Please update your Maverick install first: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade Then remove/backup your xorg.conf file: sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak (you can revert with 'sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf' if you need to) And then reboot without any boot options (quiet, splash, xforcevesa, or nomodeset). This should recreate the bug with the default settings (quiet and splash just add noise, so even though they're default, removing them gives a cleaner debugging scenario). After this freezes, reboot using 'xforcevesa nomodeset' so you can get a usable desktop, and upload /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old to this bug report. This should give us the Xorg.0.log for the broken default boot, which is basically the complete Xorg.0.log you took snippets from in comment #1. Thank you for taking the time to help bugfix Maverick while it's still in its development phase. If you have any questions about these instructions, please let me know and I'll try and explain them better. As a sidenote, booting with 'nomodeset' gave you a kernel panic because the -intel driver in Maverick doesn't support User Mode Settings anymore (only KMS), so when you tried to boot without KMS, the kernel got very confused and gave you a kernel panic. ** Summary changed: - Kernel Panic on Live USB Boot, Intel Graphics not working + [arrandale] Maverick boots to a black screen: (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected. -- [arrandale] Maverick boots to a black screen: (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/605667 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605667] Re: [arrandale] Maverick boots to a black screen: (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.
Good, I see it's working a little better with the latest updates from xorg-edgers. It's now giving problems with the DRM driver in the kernel: [25.710] drmGetBusid returned '' [25.710] (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version. [25.710] (EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master. so it'd be helpful to get the dmesg output for the error and see what the kernel says. I'm willing to bet that if you can shutdown normally using the power button, you can also switch to another VT with Ctrl+Alt+F1. This makes gathering logs much easier, as I'm sure you know. So now I'd like you to recreate the scenario above, but this time add 'drm.debug=0x06' as the only kernel parameter. This will add debugging information to dmesg. Then switch to another VT after recreating and get a copy of /var/log/dmesg, the output of 'dmesg', and another copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log for consistency. cat /var/log/dmesg BootDmesg.txt dmesg CurrentDmesg.txt cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.txt (or however else you want to capture those three files.) If you can't switch to another VT, you'll need to SSH in from another computer to get the two dmesg logs (alternately you could cherrypick that particular boot from kern.log, copy it to another file (so the file is smaller and only contains the relevant boot) and upload that along with Xorg.0.log.old).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575868] Re: [arrandale] thinkpad t510 starts in low graphics mode
1) Does everyone with this configuration have to manually edit their xorg.conf? The intel driver no longer requires an xorg.conf now that it uses KMS. The fact that yours still existed is a problem with the upgrade process from Karmic, not a problem with the -intel driver, so I really couldn't answer that for you. 2) The resolution on the gdm login screen is incorrect. See if removing your xorg.conf solves this: sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak You can revert it if needed with: sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf If it's still wrong without an xorg.conf, file a new bug report with 'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel'. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Expired = Invalid -- [arrandale] thinkpad t510 starts in low graphics mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/575868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Please try the drm-intel-next mainline kernel here [1]. Download and install the _all headers, i386 headers, and i386 image. Then boot into that kernel with 'drm.debug=0x02' in the grub kernel line after 'quiet splash'. Then see if you can reproduce a crash where you can switch to a TTY with Ctrl+Alt+F1. Login and then take a copy of these three files: cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state i915_error_state.txt cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.txt dmesg dmesg.txt Then try restarting X by running 'startx'. If you can't switch to a TTY no matter how many times you reproduce, upload your kern.log file after you recover, noting the exact date/time the crash occurred.
