[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511]

2011-07-28 Thread Stenten
On Thu, Jul 28, 2011 at 6:39 PM, Christiansen
541...@bugs.launchpad.netwrote:

As the upstream bugfixes is apparently only applied to the latest
kernels (3.0) and demands drivers from xserver-xorg-video-intel never
than 2.14 (2.15 is in Oneiric right now), reenabling the intel driver
will only work for Oneiric (11.10) at present time.

This is not true. The fix has been in the mainline kernel since 2.6.38-rc7.
So if you're running Maverick (which uses the .38 kernel), you already have
the patch. You just need to load the -intel driver instead of fbdev like you
mentioned. This is what I am doing right now in fact.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 817814] [NEW] [i8xx] Re-enable -intel driver for i8xx chipsets in Oneiric

2011-07-28 Thread Stenten
Public bug reported:

Since Maverick, Ubuntu has enabled the fbdev driver by default instead
of the -intel driver for i8xx chipsets because of bug 541511 and its
cousins (cache-coherency; bug 27187 upstream [1]). This bug has been
fixed upstream and applied to the mainline linux kernel since 2.6.38-rc7
with the commit agp/intel: Experiment with a 855GM GWB bit. As such,
Oneiric should not contain the fbdev workaround since its 3.0 kernel
contains the upstream patch.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2011-07-28 Thread Stenten
Sorry, I misspoke. Natty is the first release to contain the fix, not
Maverick (Natty is on the .38 kernel; Maverick is on .35).

So Lucid will not work OOTB (out-of-the-box). You need to disable KMS as
indicated at [1]. Maverick ships with a workaround, so it works OOTB.
Natty contains both the workaround and the upstream fix, so it works
OOTB. You can disable the workaround by enabling the -intel driver as
indicated at [2]; it will work normally because it also ships with the
upstream fix in the kernel. Christiansen is just mentioning that since
Oneiric contains the fix too, it should not also ship with the
workaround.

I've opened Bug 817814 to track this and will give a heads up to some of
the devs. Those with i8xx chipsets on Oneiric can help by adding a
comment to that bug whether or not Oneiric works using the -intel driver
on i8xx chipsets. (Play a movie file in Totem or VLC and see if it
freezes; also run it for a couple days and see if it freezes.)

2011-07-28 Thread Stenten
Nevermind. I'd forgotten, but found it again searching through my
mailing lists:

From [1]:
In natty, we stopped Ubuntu development support for the 8xx chipset;
these may still work ok with the -intel driver but we no longer
field bug reports or backport fixes for them. This policy will
continue in oneiric, but we'll reevaluate for oneiric+1. Meanwhile,
please work with upstream directly for 8xx problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 511001] Re: [i855] Lucid Freeze shortly after X startup (needs KMS blacklist?)

2010-09-25 Thread Stenten
axion:

Huh?? KMS hasn't been enabled at the kernel-level and blacklisted in
xorg-server in Lucid (actually, I think this is impossible). The patch
in this bug report doesn't even do anything to KMS; it just forces
writes in the GTT.

I have a sneaking suspicion you're actually talking about the switch to
the fbdev driver instead of the Intel driver in Maverick. If this is
true, you should post your question to the ubuntu-x mailing list
instead.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 613349] Re: CTR + ALT + F1 (actually all of the terminals) not working

2010-08-09 Thread Stenten
What packages did you update to break this? It looks like you recently
upgraded to the -24 kernel; does booting into the -23 kernel in GRUB fix
the problem?

Did you try switching VTs in the same session you filed this bug?
There's no indication in the logs that a VT switch was requested. If you
didn't try switching, please try again and then upload the output of
dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Please also run 'sudo intel_reg_dumper intel_reg_dumper1.txt' on a
fresh boot. Then try switching VTs and run 'sudo intel_reg_dumper
intel_reg_dumper2.txt'. Then upload both files to this report. If you
can find a working configuration (like using a different kernel), it'd
be helpful if you could do the same procedure as above on that
configuration too.

drm/i915: add pipe A force quirks to i915 driver

Ported over from the old UMS list. Unfortunately they're still
necessary especially on older laptop platforms.

Fixes https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22126.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2010-08-03 Thread Stenten
C,

That's the hope. Please install the new driver and remove your KMS-
enabling workaround (so you boot into UMS) and report back. I've added
specific instructions for how to do both at [1]. Let me know if you have
any questions.

+ === Original Report ===
  Laptop: Sony Vaio model: VPCY2190X
Ubuntu Release: 10.04 x64 Live USB as made by the USB Creator tool from
Ubuntu 10.04 x64

I am trying to boot Ubuntu off a live USB stick (no disc drive), but get a
kernel panic or a non-responsive system on every boot.
If I allow the startup process to continue without interference to change
options, I eventually end up with a blank screen, no response to mouse or
keyboard except for ctrl-alt-del, which preforms a shutdown. ctrl-alt-f1 will
not bring up a terminal either. When I turn on the 'nomodeset' boot option I
can see the boot splash, can ESC out of it and see boot text. However, I get
what appears to be corrupted, colored text for a split second and then kernel
panic (caps scroll lock blinking) with black screen. The other options in
the live boot option screen do not seem to make an appreciable difference.

With my moderate amount of linux experience, I'm going to postulate that
this is a graphics chipset driver issue because of the display
corruption and the fact that 'nomodeset' at least improves the boot
experience. The graphics chipset is an Intel chip:

Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
  Mobile Intel® GS45 Express Chipset

I hope that I am in error in reporting this bug, but I have tried all the
tricks that I could think of to get it to boot and have failed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605667] Re: Kernel Panic on Live USB Boot, Intel Graphics not working

2010-07-19 Thread Stenten
Please update your Maverick install first:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade

Then remove/backup your xorg.conf file:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
(you can revert with 'sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf' if you
need to)
And then reboot without any boot options (quiet, splash, xforcevesa, or
nomodeset). This should recreate the bug with the default settings (quiet and
splash just add noise, so even though they're default, removing them gives a
cleaner debugging scenario). After this freezes, reboot using 'xforcevesa
nomodeset' so you can get a usable desktop, and upload /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
to this bug report. This should give us the Xorg.0.log for the broken default
boot, which is basically the complete Xorg.0.log you took snippets from in
comment #1.

Thank you for taking the time to help bugfix Maverick while it's still
in its development phase. If you have any questions about these
instructions, please let me know and I'll try and explain them better.

As a sidenote, booting with 'nomodeset' gave you a kernel panic because
the -intel driver in Maverick doesn't support User Mode Settings anymore
(only KMS), so when you tried to boot without KMS, the kernel got very
confused and gave you a kernel panic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605667] Re: [arrandale] Maverick boots to a black screen: (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.

2010-07-19 Thread Stenten
Good, I see it's working a little better with the latest updates from
xorg-edgers. It's now giving problems with the DRM driver in the kernel:
[25.710] drmGetBusid returned ''
[25.710] (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
[25.710] (EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.
so it'd be helpful to get the dmesg output for the error and see what the
kernel says.

I'm willing to bet that if you can shutdown normally using the power button,
you can also switch to another VT with Ctrl+Alt+F1. This makes gathering logs
much easier, as I'm sure you know. So now I'd like you to recreate the scenario
above, but this time add 'drm.debug=0x06' as the only kernel parameter. This
will add debugging information to dmesg. Then switch to another VT after
recreating and get a copy of /var/log/dmesg, the output of 'dmesg', and another
copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log for consistency.
cat /var/log/dmesg BootDmesg.txt
dmesg CurrentDmesg.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.txt
(or however else you want to capture those three files.)

If you can't switch to another VT, you'll need to SSH in from another
computer to get the two dmesg logs (alternately you could cherrypick
that particular boot from kern.log, copy it to another file (so the file
is smaller and only contains the relevant boot) and upload that along
with Xorg.0.log.old).

Sorry, I meant for that to be without the xorg.conf, which forces the
vesa driver. That wasn't as clear as it should have been, sorry.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583902] Re: [i915gm] X crashes minutes after resuming from suspend to RAM

2010-07-13 Thread Stenten
That's a problem with with xorg-edgers PPA, most likely because it was in the
process of updating or one of the daily git snapshots has a bug in it. From the
xorg-edgers page:
To revert to official packages, you can install the ppa-purge package and run
sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers. If you have driconf it is recommended to remove
~/.drirc when changing versions!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601426] Re: [arrandale] Xorg freeze while playing DDO

2010-07-10 Thread Stenten
Please upgrade to the xorg-edgers packages again [1] and also install
the newest vanilla 2.6.35-rcX mainline kernel [2] (installation
instructions here [3]).

Then reboot with the kernel parameter 'drm.debug=0x06 [4] and recreate the bug.
Then switch to tty1 again and get a copy of dmesg and Xorg.0.log as before, and
also run
intel_error_decode intel_error_decode.txt
and upload those three files to this bug report. Thank you.

[2]: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
[3]: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds
[4]: You can bring up the boot menu by holding shift during boot. Select the
kernel and press 'e' to edit the kernel command line and Ctrl+X to boot with
that command line. Another way is to add it in /etc/default/grub, add it to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and run 'sudo update grub'.

Sorry, yes, can you install the 2.6.35-rc4 kernel [1] (instructions here
[2]) and also the xorg-edgers PPA packages [3] and then reproduce the
freeze with drm.debug=0x02 in the kernel parameter line and then either
switch to a TTY or SSH in and get a copy of Xorg.0.log, dmesg, and the

Could you please reproduce this issue on a fresh boot and then either
switch to a TTY or SSH in and get a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log,

Also please test with the xorg-edgers PPA [1]. Make sure you install

Andreas,

Could you please file a new bug report by typing 'ubuntu-bug xserver-
xorg-video-intel' immediately after a crash? (There's a one-report-per-
person policy with graphics bugs, since they're all so similar. Mention
this report in yours though in case they do end up being duplicates).
Thank you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 586090] Re: [i945g] X fails to start

2010-06-22 Thread Stenten
Sorry, the process can be a bit confusing if you're not used to it. To install
the current mainline kernel:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc3-maverick/
Download the _all headers, the i386 headers, and the i386 kernel, and then
install them in that order by double-clicking them. You should then be able to
select it in grub (hold down Shift while booting to get there).

You should also try the xorg-edgers PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
To install:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo apt-get upgrade
To revert:
sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575868] Re: [arrandale] thinkpad t510 starts in low graphics mode

2010-06-22 Thread Stenten
1) Does everyone with this configuration have to manually edit their
xorg.conf?

The intel driver no longer requires an xorg.conf now that it uses KMS. The fact
that yours still existed is a problem with the upgrade process from Karmic, not
a problem with the -intel driver, so I really couldn't answer that for you.

2) The resolution on the gdm login screen is incorrect.

See if removing your xorg.conf solves this:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
You can revert it if needed with:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf
If it's still wrong without an xorg.conf, file a new bug report with
'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel'.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588027]

2010-06-04 Thread Stenten
In that case, you might as well move on to the next step in debugging.

1) Install the drm-intel-next kernel [1]. Download and install the _all
headers, amd64 headers, and amd64 image.

2) Add debugging information to dmesg.
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Add 'drm.debug=0x02' to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line so it reads
'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash drm.debug=0x02
Save and exit, then run
sudo update-grub

3) On your next crash, upload these six files:
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state, the output of 'dmesg',
/var/log/dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 586173] Re: [i945] intel gma 82945G xorg does not work at boot

2010-06-03 Thread Stenten
Could you please provide your Xorg.0.log file after issuing sudo service gdm
start and startx and we'll compare.
In a TTY after starting gdm, run
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log_gdm.txt
And after rebooting and 'startx'
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log_startx.txt
Then upload both files; they should be in your home directory.

Also try booting with the kernel option “video=vga16fb:disable”. Make
sure you provide your Xorg.0.log and dmesg logs in this case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583902] Re: X crashes minutes after resuming from suspend to RAM

2010-06-03 Thread Stenten
Thank you; Apport worked correctly that time.

When the screen blacks out again, can you:
1) Toggle the Capslock light?
2) Switch to a virtual terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1?
3) Logout with Ctrl+Alt+Del?
4) REISUB? (Hold down Alt+SysRq and press, in this order, r, e, i, s, u, and b.
This should safely reboot your system.)

After you recover your system, please run
cat /var/log/kern.log kern.log.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old Xorg.0.log.old.txt (If you don't have to reboot
your system, use 'Xorg.0.log instead of 'Xorg.0.log.old'.)
That should create two files named kern.log.txt and Xorg.0.log.old.txt (or
Xorg.0.log.txt) in your home folder; upload those please.

Also see if you can recreate the problem with Compiz disabled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 583902] Re: X crashes minutes after resuming from suspend to RAM

2010-06-03 Thread Stenten
Please try the drm-intel-next mainline kernel here [1]. Download and
install the _all headers, i386 headers, and i386 image.

Then boot into that kernel with 'drm.debug=0x02' in the grub kernel line
after 'quiet splash'.

Then see if you can reproduce a crash where you can switch to a TTY with
Ctrl+Alt+F1. Login and then take a copy of these three files:
cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state i915_error_state.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.txt
dmesg dmesg.txt
Then try restarting X by running 'startx'.

If you can't switch to a TTY no matter how many times you reproduce,
upload your kern.log file after you recover, noting the exact date/time
the crash occurred.

I have the 2.9 Intel driver. I got the same result with the 2.11

Systematically, after a ten to forty minutes delay when resuming from
suspend to RAM, X is crashing (black screen). Since Lucid release, about
ten to fifteen seconds after the crash, a small screen pops up and
offers to switch to a degraded mode and provides other technical
choices. After that, suspend to RAM is working again (I think with VESA)
but of course, I lose Compiz and these kind of things.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 588027] Re: [arrandale] Xserver occasionally crashes with Intel mobile graphics (i5-430M CPU)

2010-06-03 Thread Stenten
Can you still reproduce this by disabling compiz, unplugging your
external monitor, and not using suspend/hibernate?

Also, I noticed in your logs that the intel driver fails while you're
running VirtualBox. Are you running Lucid in a VM? Can you reproduce
this when you're not using VirtualBox?

Reassigning to linux because suspend/resume is handled by the kernel,
and Kamal (who is working on this) is in the Kernel Team. Apologies if
this isn't the correct action.
