[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160903] [NEW] Please re-patch 215_glx_drawable_refcounting.diff for precise (12.04)

2013-03-27 Thread ojordan
Public bug reported:

Hello,

This bug affects oneiric and precise. Previous versions of Ubuntu used
to carry a patch 215_glx_drawable_refcounting.diff . This came about
because of this upstream bug report
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28181 .

The patch was removed in oneiric (xorg-server-1.10.2-1ubuntu1 to be
accurate), presumably because of the upstream inclusion of commit
b5093063b5d76ff31519a2daf85ea32808f1afe6 .

However, as noted in the original bug report, that commit doesn't fix
the problem when using radeon UMS. You need to add the patch in comment
40 of that bug report, or alternatively, remove the upstream commit and
re-apply the 215 patch.

Without the patch(s) I get very frequent crashes of the Xorg server when
using an OpenGL window manager. Just un-minimising a window in kwin
will usually cause a crash. I'll include an Xorg log of a crash for
you. It is basically unusable and I have to revert to non-opengl.

Radeon UMS was removed in quantal so I can't test any newer versions of
the package. KMS doesn't have this particular problem, but has its own
problems and UMS is still the best option in 12.04 for radeon PowerPC.
I probably should add that to get UMS open-gl in precise I have to
install an older 7.11 version of libgl1-mesa-dri.

Thanks

Release:12.04

xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.12

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1125908] Re: System freeze with radeon driver on G4 AGP Graphics

2013-03-13 Thread ojordan
I also should add that in addition to this problem, there are a few
colour issues with radeon KMS. A lot of fixes have gone in, and it is
much better than it was, but last time I tried I was still getting this
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/1052619 . If you use a compositing manager it is much better.
I will NOT be following up on that bug, as I do not use LXDE. There are
enough people shoving Lubuntu down your throat, and they should be
looking into these issues. It needs reporting on bugzilla also.

I just tried Xubuntu without the composting manager and see this problem
also. The only exception is the terminal program which has the correct
colours. If I disable the composite extension in an xorg.conf then this
also has messed up colours. Some sort of endian problem in the radeon
driver?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1125908] Re: System freeze with radeon driver on G4 AGP Graphics

2013-03-13 Thread ojordan
PowerPC + radeon + Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) has problems with AGP. If
you force pci mode radeon.agpmode=-1 does this help?

Userspace mode setting with radeon was dropped after Ubuntu 12.04/Debian
wheezy so you have to use KMS in 12.10 onwards. KMS on PowerPC is
something that really needs sorting. If you want to help with the
issue, then report it on Bugzilla https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ or even
the PowerPC kernel mailing list https://lists.ozlabs.org/pipermail
/linuxppc-dev/ .

@John thanks that's another confirmation of this bug. Unity/compiz
won't work with the fbdev xorg driver (...or more correctly it is
supposed to work with llvmpipe, but there are still issues). If you
want to try KMS which may work with unity then you can define an
xorg.conf like I did

2012-10-12 Thread ojordan
There seems to be a new problem - the kernel is currently screwed when
using KMS. It won't even boot. I think this is the problem you were
hitting 2blue. A serious regression just at the end of testing. I
don't think 12.10 should be released in this state.you can only
stretch workarounds so far.

2012-10-05 Thread ojordan
Also, you haven't turned off just 3d acceleration, but ALL acceleration
from what I understand. To turn off 3d you'd have to disable DRI or
turn off AIGLX so that the software rasteriser is used. Something like
that anyway. I think your problem is possibly EXA related, but FYI if
you wish you could probably be a bit more selective on the acceleration
you turn off.

It's probably worth pointing out that you had to define an xorg.conf
because you got "No devices detected" in the Xorg.0.log. A similar
problem to what is currently happening to some (all?) radeon cards with
PowerPC at the moment since the latest update to the radeon driver - bug
1058641 .

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058641] Re: "No devices detected" radeon regression

2012-10-04 Thread ojordan
@Ron thanks that confirms my problem in that the radeon card is not
detected and the Xorg server is not starting. It seems for you,
additionally, the radeondrmfb is not working correctly (hence the blank
screen).

@2blue thanks for trying to help out, but those logs have nothing to do
with this bug because you haven't disabled the radeonfb framebuffer in
them. When you do use 'video=ofonly' and it appears to be hanging, do
you get a black screen or does the text stay on the screen? Can you try
'live video=ofonly radeon.agpmode=-1' to see if that stops the freezing?

For me the regression is definitely in the latest xorg radeon driver,
but I note wxl is having similar symptoms with nouveau (KMS)on PowerPC.
Hmm...

@2blue, the boot parameter is 'video=ofonly', not offonly. The radeon
xorg driver will only work in 12.10 on PowerPC if you disable the
radeonfb framebuffer.

2012-10-02 Thread ojordan
@wxl and lars. You are not understanding this bug report.
video=radeonfb:1024x768-32 etc is using the fbdev driver. It is not
using the radeon xorg driver.

If you are on PowerPC and you want to test for this bug then you need to
turn off radeonfb using the video=ofonly (or video=radeonfb:off).

However, as far as I can tell there should be nothing PowerPC specific
about this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058753] Re: Radeon driver nolonger works on PowerPC without drm

2012-10-02 Thread ojordan
Maarten, thanks for the comment, although I am not sure I follow it (!)

I know UMS has been dropped. I know it is never coming back. And I'm
not suggesting for one minute that it should (the last version of radeon
with UMS was largely broken from what I can gather).

I just need confirmation from an X expert that the current PowerPC
kernel setup is unworkable. I can then get the kernel and/or boot
message on the ISOs updated.

As I said in post 1 we are falling back into the fbdev driver in 8 bit
pseudo colour. Is there a way to get this to a higher colour depth
automatically? The current kernel config would be okay if we could
start automatically in a higer colour depth. In the back of my mind I
think I've read somewhere that framebuffers are set to 8 bit depth to
save memory for KMS. Is this true?

Note, in all the logs I've disabled the radeonfb framebuffer (still
built in on PowerPC) to allow KMS. You do this either via the
video=ofonly or video=radeonfb:off boot parameters on PowerPC.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058753] Re: Radeon driver nolonger works without drm

2012-09-30 Thread ojordan
In the 12.04 Xorg.0.log I have the line

[39.624] (II) RADEON(0): Color tiling enabled by default

If it was using KMS then it should be (*I think*) something like ths:

[98.582] (II) RADEON(0): KMS Color Tiling: disabled
[98.582] (II) RADEON(0): KMS Pageflipping: enabled

This is why I think 12.04 uses UMS even though the dmesg says KMS is
enabled.

** Description changed:

enabled, BUT the legacy framebuffer radeonfb is still built in.

functioning (because of the presence of radeonfb).

Now in quantal the radeon driver unloads pretty much immediatly after
the "[KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported" message. The fbdev
driver takes over in 8 bit pseudo colour which causes all sorts of

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058753] Re: Radeon driver nolonger works without drm

2012-09-29 Thread ojordan
Looking at the various logs that are spread out over the various bug
reports I'm guessing that under 12.04 the radeon driver was using UMS
despite it saying it was using KMS. Once somebody with expertise can
confirm this then we can push to have the kernel config and PowerPC boot
message updated as per bug 1040526 .

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058641] [NEW] "No devices detected" radeon regression

2012-09-29 Thread ojordan
Public bug reported:

Testing the quantal daily/live ISOs I've noticed a regression with the
radeon driver. The last ISO I tested was from the 19th of Sept and that
was fine. Yesterdays live/desktop ISO (28/9/2012) fails to start the
Xorg server. It reports that no devices are detected. Creating a very
simple xorg.conf overcomes the problem:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:0:16:0"
EndSection

I'll attach the Xorg.0.log from running with and without the above
xorg.conf.

Most of these comments refer to Bug #1040526 and as such I'm making it a
duplicate of that bug. There are known and working solutions for the
live/desktop ISOs (although a change to the kernel config and boot

If you still have the original problem on an installed system then
please comment on Bug #1044180 .

I'm not sure why ubiquity can't cope with 8 bit colours.possibly
something that might be worth looking into?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046951] Re: No desktop environment or window manager, just X with the mouse

2012-09-14 Thread ojordan
The radeon driver no longer supports UMS. Because of the current
PowerPC kernel config (radeonfb is built in) KMS drm cannot be
activated. You are falling back to the fbdev driver in 8 bit mode (hence
the poor colors).

One way to activate KMS is using the video=ofonly parameter (this
disables radeonfb). If this causes freezing then you should combine it
with radeon.agpmode=-1 (forces PCI mode).

I've said the same thing on this ubuntu forums thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2053596

These solutions have also been documented in the PowerPC FAQ for a long
time now
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#What_yaboot_parameters_should_I_use_for_graphics_problems.3F
and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#Radeon_cards

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-06-30 Thread ojordan
I've found a better way to deal with the unmiminising crashing with
Kwin. In System Settings > Desktop Effects > Advanced there is a settng
for "Keep window thumbnails". If you change that to "Always (Breaks
minimization)" then it cures the crashing. It still allows
minimistation, but (from a bit of googling) it just handles the
minimisation differently. Sorted!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-06-29 Thread ojordan
For anybody experiencing these problems: To overcome the resize
crashings I used the plugins to draw a rectangle instead of the 'normal'
resize mode.

The unminimising crashes can be overcome in kwin by creating a rule to
disable minimising. This is not so extreme as it sounds - I believe
gnome shell is doing the same thing or thinking about it. It supposedly
is a more efficient way of working! We'll seeit takes a bit of
getting used to. You also need to use kdesudo instead of gksudo (if
you are using kwin outside of kubuntu).

Kwin is very fast using Xrender though. Resizing in 'normal' mode is
much quicker than under OpenGL (and is stable). So it is not so bad if
you use that (feels better than xfwm).

Sorry to go off track from the original post!

Argh.kwin had gone to Xrender. Sigh.

Just resizing windows in kwin and compiz is now causing crashings.
Things are getting worse!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-06-27 Thread ojordan
Hi Tormod and Bryce, thanks for the interest in this. Sorry I've been a
bit long getting back to you about this - I don't check this email
address often enough!!

I don't know if I can help much with the details of the mesa-legacy
package setup, but I am always up for testing stuff. Is it something
planned for 12.10 onwards or can it be installed in 12.04? I've found
your ppa https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/mesa-
legacy/+packages . I'm afraid how the various graphics drivers work and
fit together is a bit beyond me at the moment.

I only really use opengl stuff for desktop effects and I've been a bit
down about how to get something decent in 12.04 onwards. Kwin has been
crashing when I unminimise windows (
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=657596 ) and compiz (even
compiling the latest stable version) has been a bit crashtastic.
Suddenly yesterday I noticed that kwin nolonger is crashing and has been
rock solid. I'm over the moon about it. I have no idea what has fixed
it, but I am intent on finding out!

Let me know if I can be of any help with the mesa-legacy package(s).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-03-06 Thread ojordan
Thanks Robert for the qick reply! Is this a can't fix/won't fix
situation then? I remember reading on phoronix (
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTg0Mg ) that large
chunks of code were being deleted, is this the case with r200? Or is it
possible for the user just to tweak some setting and recompile?

A follow up article on phoronix (
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTAxMDE ) mentions
the possibility of a mesa-old-dri-drivers package. Do you know if this
is going to be implemented? I can't find it, but I'm generally rubbish
at finding packages! It would be a nicer workaround than downloading
the 7.11 versions directly from launchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] [NEW] UMS dri support missing for r200

2012-03-04 Thread ojordan
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm currently testing 12.04 on my PowerPC iBook. It is reverting to the
software rasterizer. Here is the relevant bit of the xorg log:

[29.603] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
[29.603] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
[29.603] drmOpenDevice: open result is 12, (OK)
[29.603] drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci::00:10.0
[29.603] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
[29.604] drmOpenDevice: open result is 12, (OK)
[29.604] drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 12
[29.604] drmOpenByBusid: Interface 1.4 failed, trying 1.1
[29.604] drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::00:10.0
[29.616] (EE) AIGLX error: r200 does not export required DRI extension
[29.616] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[29.622] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[29.622] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

I think the important bit is "error: r200 does not export required DRI
extension". Am I correct in thinking that only KMS is now supported by
libgl1-mesa-dri?

If so this is a big problem for PowerPC. Kernel Mode Setting with
radeon cards and PowerPC is still very shakey. I can only get my iBook
to not crash under KMS using the radeon.agpmode=-1 parameter (i.e.
forcing PCI mode). Also, there is no suspend under KMS with PowerPC.

Would it be possible to build back in Userspace Mode Setting support for
r200 cards?

Thanks!
