[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160903] [NEW] Please re-patch 215_glx_drawable_refcounting.diff for precise (12.04)
Public bug reported: Hello, This bug affects oneiric and precise. Previous versions of Ubuntu used to carry a patch 215_glx_drawable_refcounting.diff . This came about because of this upstream bug report https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28181 . The patch was removed in oneiric (xorg-server-1.10.2-1ubuntu1 to be accurate), presumably because of the upstream inclusion of commit b5093063b5d76ff31519a2daf85ea32808f1afe6 . However, as noted in the original bug report, that commit doesn't fix the problem when using radeon UMS. You need to add the patch in comment 40 of that bug report, or alternatively, remove the upstream commit and re-apply the 215 patch. Without the patch(s) I get very frequent crashes of the Xorg server when using an OpenGL window manager. Just un-minimising a window in kwin will usually cause a crash. I'll include an Xorg log of a crash for you. It is basically unusable and I have to revert to non-opengl. Radeon UMS was removed in quantal so I can't test any newer versions of the package. KMS doesn't have this particular problem, but has its own problems and UMS is still the best option in 12.04 for radeon PowerPC. I probably should add that to get UMS open-gl in precise I have to install an older 7.11 version of libgl1-mesa-dri. @wxl and lars. You are not understanding this bug report. video=radeonfb:1024x768-32 etc is using the fbdev driver. It is not using the radeon xorg driver. However, as far as I can tell there should be nothing PowerPC specific about this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058641 Title: "No devices detected" radeon regression To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1058641/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058753] Re: Radeon driver nolonger works on PowerPC without drm
Maarten, thanks for the comment, although I am not sure I follow it (!) I know UMS has been dropped. I know it is never coming back. And I'm not suggesting for one minute that it should (the last version of radeon with UMS was largely broken from what I can gather). I just need confirmation from an X expert that the current PowerPC kernel setup is unworkable. I can then get the kernel and/or boot message on the ISOs updated. As I said in post 1 we are falling back into the fbdev driver in 8 bit pseudo colour. Is there a way to get this to a higher colour depth automatically? The current kernel config would be okay if we could start automatically in a higer colour depth. In the back of my mind I think I've read somewhere that framebuffers are set to 8 bit depth to save memory for KMS. ** Description changed: Hi, I'm trying to find out the best radeon setup for PowerPC in quantal and need some advice! The PowerPC kernel is currently setup with KMS enabled, BUT the legacy framebuffer radeonfb is still built in. Although this is obviously not an ideal setup it seemed to work okay as a default setup up until August when UMS was dropped in quantal. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1046951] Re: No desktop environment or window manager, just X with the mouse
The radeon driver no longer supports UMS. Because of the current PowerPC kernel config (radeonfb is built in) KMS drm cannot be activated. You are falling back to the fbdev driver in 8 bit mode (hence the poor colors). One way to activate KMS is using the video=ofonly parameter (this disables radeonfb). If this causes freezing then you should combine it with radeon.agpmode=-1 (forces PCI mode). I've said the same thing on this ubuntu forums thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2053596 These solutions have also been documented in the PowerPC FAQ for a long time now https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#What_yaboot_parameters_should_I_use_for_graphics_problems.3F and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#Radeon_cards -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1046951 Title: No desktop environment or window manager, just X with the mouse To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1046951/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I've found a better way to deal with the unmiminising crashing with Kwin. In System Settings > Desktop Effects > Advanced there is a settng for "Keep window thumbnails". If you change that to "Always (Breaks minimization)" then it cures the crashing. It still allows minimistation, but (from a bit of googling) it just handles the minimisation differently. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] Re: UMS dri support missing for r200
For anybody experiencing these problems: To overcome the resize crashings I used the plugins to draw a rectangle instead of the 'normal' resize mode. The unminimising crashes can be overcome in kwin by creating a rule to disable minimising. This is not so extreme as it sounds - I believe gnome shell is doing the same thing or thinking about it. It supposedly is a more efficient way of working! We'll seeit takes a bit of getting used to. You also need to use kdesudo instead of gksudo (if you are using kwin outside of kubuntu). Kwin is very fast using Xrender though. Resizing in 'normal' mode is much quicker than under OpenGL (and is stable). So it is not so bad if you use that (feels better than xfwm). Do you know if this is going to be implemented? I can't find it, but I'm generally rubbish at finding packages! It would be a nicer workaround than downloading the 7.11 versions directly from launchpad. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/946677 Title: UMS dri support missing for r200 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/946677/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 946677] [NEW] UMS dri support missing for r200
Public bug reported: Hi, I'm currently testing 12.04 on my PowerPC iBook. It is reverting to the software rasterizer. Here is the relevant bit of the xorg log: [29.603] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable [29.603] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 [29.603] drmOpenDevice: open result is 12, (OK) [29.603] drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci::00:10.0 [29.603] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 [29.604] drmOpenDevice: open result is 12, (OK) [29.604] drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 12 [29.604] drmOpenByBusid: Interface 1.4 failed, trying 1.1 [29.604] drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::00:10.0 [29.616] (EE) AIGLX error: r200 does not export required DRI extension [29.616] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering [29.622] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast [29.622] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0 I think the important bit is "error: r200 does not export required DRI extension". Am I correct in thinking that only KMS is now supported by libgl1-mesa-dri? If so this is a big problem for PowerPC. Kernel Mode Setting with radeon cards and PowerPC is still very shakey. I can only get my iBook to not crash under KMS using the radeon.agpmode=-1 parameter (i.e. forcing PCI mode). Also, there is no suspend under KMS with PowerPC. Would it be possible to build back in Userspace Mode Setting support for r200 cards? Thanks!
