Hi Jean-Marie,

"enter" is used in some comments and means either that you have to
switch your current folder/directory when you are in terminal. So
commands should be executed in the right folder, otherwise you might do
something else or maybe nothing.

So "enter kernel" means to  to cd to the decompressed folder of the
kernel source files.

Quinten's description worked for me and it is not that difficult to
follow.

Yes I have kernel 6.5.9 ready. But the instructions reads:

I don't understand this instruction "enter it" .

After some consideration, I can wait for the official patch.
I have another machine that can run VM's in the meantime. So i will not be 
going trough the trouble of signing and building external modules.

Er What's this kernel download all about. ?.. Is my ubuntu 22.04 system
*obsolete* already... Why can't a patch meant to provide access to such
basic things like mouse/ touchpad rely on good old solid code fitting every
system for laptop...?

I hadn't bothered downloading the latest kernel, but it seems to be
important so I've dowloaded linux 6.5.9, and extracted with tar

*NB: NOT simple to do... I had to look for the info then copy/paste the
code in order to launch the tar program... Nothing like a right click on
the file and it'd show the "extract to..." option... WHY !? I ask, because
the hardest part of the job = the extracting program,  was done.
Programmers are obviously capable of adding a right-click option and save
time for everyone. The only reason I see is, linux would be designed  for
those for whom the very use of a terminal is *the ultimate fun

... I've entered "sudo su" and have that "#" root sign. My  next step is
trying to figure out what "enter [the new kernel]" means. Do we enter
kernels ?

But let me have one question. How can I prevent that this patched kernel
is overwritten by a newer one at some point of time of an update?

Hi Jean-Marie,

Are you sure you have downloaded the right kernel from kernel.org?
And are you root in the unpacked kernel directory? the prompt should say 
something like /dir/linux-X.X.X/#

then run the patch command :)

I have kinda made progress in regards of being able to patch and install
a kernel.

First i'ill walk you through my assumptions,

1) you have the laptop and installed a debian/ubuntu based distro but the 
keyboard and touchpad don't work.
2) there is at least 64Gb of disk space available
3) you have the option of using the root user.

so first off.
Download the patch from above. 
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=305236
run uname -r, this will return your kernel version, download the closest 
matching version to that version from kernel.org, but remeber only download 
later versions, so you are not using a version older than your current kernel.

then run sudo apt install build-essential libncurses5-dev libssl-dev
flex libelf-dev bc bison gcc make dwarves zstd

then unzip the downloaded kernel and enter it as root.
appply the patch by running the following as roon in the unzipped kernel 
directory: patch -p1 < path_to_patchfile

it will return something notifying it's ready.

then copy over the latest kernel config to the unzipped kernel this can
be found in the /boot directory mine is /boot/config-6.1.59 for example.

Hi Quinten,

I would do another try on the Ubuntu 22.04.3, but I am not sure if I
have downloaded earlier the right kernel source. Could you send the link
to the one you used?

What anout the .config file. Did you made the config as described
earlier? So no stock config, just running the make menuconfig and that
is all?

Any specific thing you did differently than above?

Okay so far i tested:

debian12 on kernel 6.1.59
zorinos 16 on kernel 5.15.136
ubuntu 22.04.3 on kernel 6.5.3

All of the above configs work, if patched. stability was not tested
because of lack of time. But i would guess it's stable enough.

update;
I was able to compile it on zorin os (ubuntu 20.04.2) install it, and 
touchpad/keyboard works great.

I'm now switching to 22.04 to see how that fares, the closest available
kernel for that distro is 6.5.XX coming from 6.2.XX that could
potentially mess things up, but it's worth testing i guess.

Will report my findings here.
Currently every distro i eventually manage to install the patched kernel in 
seems to work fine.

anyway i may have found why it might not have worked on ubuntu, i saw
some errors during the compilation, basically install zstd from apt
making the install line the following

sudo apt install build-essential libncurses5-dev libssl-dev flex libelf-
dev bc bison gcc make dwarves zstd

i hope to see it work on ubuntu based distro's soon.

Hi,

It could be this patch works for arch too, i'm not certain, test it out
in a VM first, patch the kernel install the patched kernel and if it
boots then test the same steps on the baremetal.

I just compiled the kernel on ubuntu, 5.15.136 and will test if it works
soon enough when i get the change, if i find the time for it i will
write documentation on how you can patch the kernel up yourself, i
personally used ubuntu 20.04.2 but might give it a shot in ubuntu
22.04.3 lts i just used VMS up until now but will test it out with
external drives. i'm having an extremely busy week so i might have this
sit up until next week.

This was an exciting breakthrough!

Copying the stock config file to .config, did not cause compilation
issues, but did not change anything at the end. I have the feeling that
I was not downloading the right kernel source, even if I have followed
the instruction on the Ubuntu website.

At my latest trial the installed kernel appears as 6.1.6+, what is weird
as the stock kernel is 6.5.3 which appears as 6.5.0-9-generic. This is
also not really clear why the coding is not following the official base
kernel coding.

I am ok to wait for the solution, as without the background knowledge of
what I am doing, this seems to be an impossible mission. And I am not
Tom Cruise either. :D

So, I leave making the solution to the professionals. :D

Endre, install the kernel you built into said debian12 install, and then
run that debian install on the laptop, and that should do the trick :)

crash on some 32 bit support stuff that i had not time to figure out.

Endre,

You probably need to copy over Ubuntu's stock kernel config file.

They normally can be found at '/boot/config-*'. Copy that to the kernel
source root directory as '.config'.
