I see, but why does dpkg -S say it's from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau?
Also this should have been purged, but wasn't probably because of errors
when trying to do so:

Looks like you want to add || true to the update-initramfs call in
the postrm script.
I had linux-backports-modules-nouveau-2.6.32-{12,13,14}-generic installed, but
purged now:
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-kernel-nouveau.conf is gone.
It appears dpkg -S is buggy here?

Ok - this blacklist file isn't present in the current version of the nouveau package, or in the versions that shipped in intrepid/jaunty/karmic. Did you install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau from a PPA or anything, previously? The current package changelog doesn't mention anything about this blacklist file. Anyway, this is either a bug in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (low because it at *most* affects users who were tracking the lucid alphas), or not a bug in the Ubuntu package. Ok. That blacklist file comes from the xorg-edgers PPA linux-backports- modules-nouveau package.
