[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2012-03-12 Thread Chauncellor
Been a while, guys.

I haven't had this issue since forever, so this has been fixed in the
pipeline. If anyone still has a problem on a newer version of Ubuntu
(11.10, 12.04, etc), please just report a new bug. Closing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-10-14 Thread Reason
I've never used the wobbly windows plugin.
In my experience the amount of open windows determines the performance problem.
No windows and it seems to be working fine, but even 1 window results in a
noticeable frame drop.
And I'm using 5 desktop all packed with windows and virtual machines causing to
drop the performance to a frame a second (or worse).
Hoped 10.10 would fix this regression, but it hasn't.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-10-13 Thread Reason
Unfortunately not even the final version of 10.10 fixed this issue and it
remains crippling the desktop usage.
I would consider this a major bug because Ubuntu uses the desktop effects by
default.
Even the upgrade to the 260.xx driver from nVidia did not fix anything.

2010-09-30 Thread David Lieberman
Upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 yesterday and encountered this problem with
a GeForce 8500 on AMD64. Running compiz I see very poor performance.
Installed the latest nvidia driver for my card from the vendor, with no
effect. Also tried the install libgnome command, with no effect. Finally
bailed and upgraded to 10.10 beta. The problem persists.

Hello,

The following worked for me.

aptitude install libgnome-window-settings1=1:2.30.0-0ubuntu4

I didn't try any of the other fixes.

I am on an Asus UL80JT with integrated Geforce 310M and Core i3 running
Lucid x64. Stock kernels and everything. After that command and a
reboot, compiz acts like it should. Super smooth.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-07-29 Thread Chauncellor
Hm. Have you tried with loose bindings? 'compiz --replace --loose-
bindings'

Also, I'm just making sure, have you also updated nvidia-settings with
the graphics driver? I looked and it seems that nvidia-settings doesn't
really depend on much so it's possible it may have slipped through.

I really don't have much of a clue at this point. Sixpounder's theory
sounds pretty good to me (and actually sounds just like bug 439448 to me
- I've fixed it myself by delaying Gnome-panel's startup by 3 seconds.
See post my post around 205).

Thanks for the hard work, Reason. It's been of great help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-07-29 Thread Reason
Nope, but id did just now, but the performance stays the same.
I did upgrade a small laptop which is using a nVidia 8400M GS chip to Meercat
Alpha 2+ and it's performing way better..
Don't know exactly what changed (yet), but is seems to use the same Compiz and
nVidia driver.
My nvidia-settings have the same version as the driver (256.35), delaying it's
startup seems to make a little difference until I open lots of windows, which
actually is kinda the same as this issue in general.
The more windows the less the frames per second seem to be.

Will investigate the difference between Lucid and Meercat concerning
this issue when I've got some spare time left.

Spending time trying to resolve issues in a free os is more or less a
must too me, it will benefit us all and will make a better product.
(Regressions make me kinda wonder if it's all worth the effort though)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-07-23 Thread Reason
I agree with u Chauncellor. This is suppose to be a constructive to help with
this issue.
Again i'm sorry I did vent my frustration about another regression that made me
somewhat agitated within this bug report.

Don't really see why the 80% cross platform code should be a problem besides
it's being proprietary.
In fact, this is the reason why it's performing like it does. I do love the
nouveau initiative, but it's just not there yet.

I do agree nvidia doesn't support new developments very well, but this issue
isn't a nvidia only problem.
The problem is not that nvidia launched a new driver which broke things.
The problem is something else changed causing this behavior. It all worked fine
before with the same drivers.
This could be new development which nvidia lacks to support, but it could be
very well another problem entirely.

This issue should have been picked up immediately when it was posted.
But till this day it's still not being worked on while it affects a
large group of user. That's the only reason why I got somewhat
frustrated about it.

Users don't care if it's proprietary or not, but do care if it works,
especially since it worked fine before.

Again your absolutely right and I'll try to be more constructive in the
future..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-07-23 Thread Chauncellor
Firstly: Can someone confirm if post 13 is on to something with the
libgnome-window-settings problem?

Secondly: Can someone see if updating the drivers works? It's up to
version 256.35 right now.

Thirdly: Can someone see if updating Compiz works? It's up to version
0.8.6 right now (Ubuntu is still on 0.8.4). I hear that 0.9 is on the
way with major changes. Maybe snagging a beta could help as well.

I would do it myself (and would have long ago) but I have absolutely
minimal internet (very limited dial-up). I'm sorry but I cannot test. I
imagine that updating either compiz or nvidia could solve our problem.
Once this is figured out we can select the proper package as confirmed.

Status in “nvidia-settings” package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

 As per this forum post:

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1469528

In a nutshell, when nvidia-settings --load-config-only is run on startup
(which is a default action), compiz performance becomes rather terrible.
This has been confirmed on both fresh install and upgrade.

The workaround is to disable the action on startup. However, manually going
to the nvidia-settings program will bring compiz down to its knees again (at
least in my case: I believe another person had no problem).

 ProblemType: Bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-07-22 Thread Reason
I've tried everything i've read, but none seem to solve it.
Using Ubuntu without Compiz degrades the desktop from an usability perspective
to a Windows XP level.
I don't really care about cubes or anything (although they look nice) but the
expo and dragging windows to different views has become the ultimate way of
managing many windows which no other desktop environment can match.
What bothers me the most is not that things don't work, but that things that
worked perfectly fine a release ago are regressed to pretty much useless. This
is just not especially for a LTS release not exceptable.

Sorry for my somewhat biased reaction but this issue is open for 3
months now and it seems nobody tries to resolve it. It completely ruins
my Ubuntu experience on all my machines (All nvidia because of there
great Linux drivers).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-07-22 Thread Chauncellor
To those unhappy: You agreed to install proprietary drivers on your
computer, and Ubuntu can do very little about what they give us. Reason:
You call them great drivers. 80 percent of the code is cross platform
and if it weren't they probably wouldn't give you anything at all. Use
the Nouveau drivers. Those are supported drivers.

Excuse the deviation but this is not a forum to post unhappy messages.
Try the workarounds, try newer drivers/kernels/xorgs (but only if you
know what you're doing), try as much of a fix as is possible with this
blob, and then post on here. Nvidia may be the only one with decent
performance but they are still poor with their support. We cannot do
anything at all besides find a version that they fixed for us.

This is what was agreed to when you clicked the enable button in
jockey.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-06-30 Thread Lem
I have issues with Compiz performance in Expo only. Sometimes it will be
silky smooth, other times it'll stutter at 30-40fps. It seems to be
totally random, and changes upon reboot. Window movement is silky smooth
all the time.

I've been doing some experimenting. Turning off sync to vblank in compiz
config settings manager makes Expo work fast. Sync to vblank in nvidia-
settings seems to have no effect on compiz being sync'd or not (yes I
restart compiz after changing the setting).

My setup is a Phenom 9850 (2.5GHz, 4 cores), GeForce GTX260 216 OC, 4Gb
DDR2-800, Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64, Samsung 225BW (1680x1050 LCD). Compiz is
set to not detect refresh rate, forced to 120 frames per second.

Currently, sync to vblank causes slow performance with compiz, and with
it disabled, compiz uses about 68% of a single core @ 2.5GHz and 1.25GHz
(makes no difference) going in and out of Expo constantly. I'll have to
test further when I happen to get good performance on boot up. Maybe the
issue I'm experiencing here is related to this thread?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-23 Thread Bryce
Just wanting to add some experiences with (what I think is) the same
problem. GeForce 9600 on 10.04 AMD64. After upgrading from 9.04 I
started having severe framerate loss mainly when switching desktops with
compiz enabled. I can confirm that delaying the start of nvidia-settings
resolves the issue until I start opening many windows, and then it
reappears, even if I haven't launched nvidia-settings yet.

The more windows open, the worse the problem is.
It seems to affect all compiz actions that zoom the screen: the magnifier,
expo, desktop cube, etc.
Killing the window decorator always resolves the problem, but with any window
decorator running, it starts again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-06 Thread Sixpounder
Idea: I noticed that gnome desktop takes more than it used to in
previous releases. At first, I tought it was nautilus pre-loaded
instance that was slow to load. But now I think it trough, it is much
more possible that it is COMPIZ who takes so long to load, much more
than in previous releases (at least on my pc). With loosee bindings
enabled (which is required for nvidia chips as far as I know) may it be
possible that bindings to opengl libraries are screwed if nvidia-
settings are applied BEFORE compiz finish to load? That would explain
why my rapid fix that waits five seconds before calling nvidia-
settings --load-config-only works... and it would mean that maybe this
bug's related package is something else and not nvidia-settings by its
own. What do you think?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-06 Thread Blackbird
Your thought may be correct in my opinion, because in my case I can see that
Compiz effects loading takes a *very* long time after I login. The desktop
background appears, and gnome-do gets launched immediately, but the menu at the
top of the screen isn't present until the effects start to run, after about 15
seconds.
That said, 15s it's not such a long wait, but I can clearly remember that
Compiz loading was faster in Karmic.

15 seconds is a EXTREMELY long wait for an application like compiz to

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-06 Thread Ben Scholzen 'DASPRiD'
I cannot confirm that Compiz needs long to load. Since I needed to start
certain applications after Compiz, I wrote a script for that, and the
applications called in it start about 0.5-1 second after the panels. I
have also moved the nvidia-settings line in it now:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-06 Thread Juraj Seffer
This has started happening for me after the update on 5h May 2010 - I
think there was an update for compiz together with new kernel 2.6.32-22.
My compiz goes up to 80% cpu after moving any window, everything is
sluggish. This does not happen when I turn off visual effects. I have an
nVidia GeForce card.

compiz package version: 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-06 Thread Juraj Seffer
I have just done:
aptitude install libgnome-window-settings1=1:2.30.0-0ubuntu4
and compiz is back to normal.

I suspect this package (its version 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1) caused my compiz to go
berserk after upgrade on 5th May.
Hope that helps.

It was also noticed in the post he linked by Chauncellor himself, that visiting
Launchpad website in Firefox may slow down effects again... (I'm writing this
from office in Windows, so I can't reproduce right now!)
I'll try it again this evening at home, but yesterday the Launchpad slowdown
happened to me even with settings startup entry disabled.

2010-05-03 Thread Chauncellor
I don't think that the firefox bug is related to this. I'm using
metacity right now and it is still very painful to scroll up and down
(dragging the window around is pretty awful, too). I believe this is a
separate bug that needs reporting.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-03 Thread Sixpounder
Another workaround is a script like this to launch at startup in place
of nvidia-settings:

#!/bin/bash
sleep 5
nvidia-settings --load-config-only

This doesn't kill compiz performances, however I use Google Chrome so I
didn't tested firefox, I'll do it this evening and report here asap

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-03 Thread Sixpounder
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

  As per this forum post:

  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1469528

In a nutshell, when nvidia-settings --load-config-only is run on startup
(which is a default action), compiz performance becomes rather terrible.
This has been confirmed on both fresh install and upgrade.

The workaround is to disable the action on startup. However, manually
going to the nvidia-settings program will bring compiz down to its knees
again (at least in my case: I believe another person had no problem).

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
  Package: nvidia-settings 195.36.08-0ubuntu2
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2
  Uname: Linux 2.6.32-21-generic i686

  Architecture: i386
  Date: Sun May 2 19:19:45 2010

  ProcEnviron:
- LANG=en_US.utf8
- SHELL=/bin/bash
+  LANG=en_US.utf8
+  SHELL=/bin/bash
  SourcePackage: nvidia-settings
+
+ Steps that (may) reproduce this bug: turn on compiz as default window
+ manager with sync_to_vblank, loose bindings enabled and indirect
+ rendering disabled. Load nvidia-settings --load-config-only as a startup
+ application
