[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589140] Re: [i855gm] VGA out flickering after upgrade to lucid (regression)
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Hi, I am experiencing problems with the VGA Output in 10.04 (lucid), but it worked fine in 9.10 (karmic). I did a clean installation, not an upgrade, but could verify that the problems are not there in 9.10 by using the livecd. I have tried many of the suggested KMS-related workarounds (including disabling DRI, using glasen's 855gm-fix ppa, disabling KMS on boot etc.) and also tried x-updates and x-retro PPAs to use driver 2.8 and 2.11 instead of 2.9. However, the problem with the black screen went away, but with *each* of the various combinations I get screen flickering on the VGA output, when screen updates are made (i.e. keyboard input or mouse movement). I am using the 1024x768 resolution on the internal screen, and also 1024x768 on the external output. I tried this with 2 beamers and one external monitor - the same problem persists everywhere. When I change the external output's resolution to a higher resolution like 1152x862 or 1280x1024, the problems are gone. By switching to a lower resolution (i.e. 800x600), the problems still persist. I have tried various of the intel driver's options (disabling DRI, pageflip, using UXA rendering etc.) but none of my attempts was successful in adressing this problem. I have attached a demonstration video of the problem and the system information collected by apport. + + [lspci] + [2.220800] agpgart-intel :00:00.0: Intel 855GM Chipset + [2.221207] agpgart-intel :00:00.0: detected 8060K stolen memory + [2.223422] agpgart-intel :00:00.0: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xe000 + 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV Processor to I/O Controller [8086:3580] (rev 02) + Subsystem: IBM Device [1014:055c] + 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02) + Subsystem: IBM Device [1014:0557] + 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02) + Subsystem: IBM Device [1014:0557] + P: /devices/pci:00/:00:00.0 + E: DEVPATH=/devices/pci:00/:00:00.0 + E: PCI_SLOT_NAME=:00:00.0 + KERNEL[1275565668.048724] add /devices/pci:00/:00:00.0 (pci) + DEVPATH=/devices/pci:00/:00:00.0 + PCI_SLOT_NAME=:00:00.0 + UDEV [1275565668.061234] add /devices/pci:00/:00:00.0 (pci) + DEVPATH=/devices/pci:00/:00:00.0 + PCI_SLOT_NAME=:00:00.0 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/589140 Title: [i855gm] VGA out flickering after upgrade to lucid (regression) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589140] Re: [i855gm] VGA out flickering after upgrade to lucid (regression)
Today I tried Brian Rogers 845/855 kernel and it solved the flickering problem. With 2.6.37 I had a black screen after booting but linux-image-2.6.35-ppa21+v9patch-generic works pretty fine for me. One side effect is the middle mouse button, it doesn't paste anymore right now. If I encounter other more serious problems in the long run, I will tell you. Brian's PPA: https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-fixes If the fix is in 2.6.35+ by default we might have luck with future default kernels of ubuntu, I'm looking forward that. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589140] Re: [i855gm] VGA out flickering after upgrade to lucid (regression)
I'm experiencing the same issue on a new installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit (with latest kernel) on a Lenovo ThinkPad T410s also with intel graphics adapter (based on the i5Core). Strange thing is that a Lenovo ThinkPad T510 works without problems (this one is based on i7Core but also intel graphics). The problem only persists when enabling the external VGA monitor adapter. The other outputs HDMI .. work just fine. Is there any workaround or fix for this problem yet? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589140] Re: [i855gm] VGA out flickering after upgrade to lucid (regression)
I can report the same on a Dell Vostro 3300 with a built-in Intel GMA4500HD graph card. Running lucid 10.04 with xorg-edgers ppa for latest drivers. No restricted driver used (should not be necessary, does it even exist?). At any resolution except 1024*768 with 75.1 (why the dot one?) mhz do I get a terrible flicker. In that resolution there is only a slight flicker. The monitor works fine in Windows7 at its optimal resolution of 1280*1024 and worked fine in Karmic on a different laptop my lshw -c output: *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: p...@:00:02.0 version: 12 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: msi pm bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:34 memory:fac0-faff memory:c000-cfff(prefetchable) ioport:f080(size=8) -- [i855gm] VGA out flickering after upgrade to lucid (regression) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/589140 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

That's strange. I also have a machine with a built-in GMA 4500 MHD graphics (a Lenovo Thinkpad X301), but I could not observe the mentioned flickering on the VGA out there (I am using 1024x768 with 60Hz) - the problem appeared only on my older X41 with the i855GM chipset. This problem also appears on the JVC MP-XV941 / Asus S3N exactly as described in #1. Using a refresh rate of 75Hz @ 1024x768 does indeed produce a stable output, as well as resolutions above that. I see exactly the same thing as Daniel Kulesz mentions at #5. The problem occurs at 1024x768, 60hz and 70hz, and goes away at 75hz (Thanks for finding and reporting this, Daniel!) Since I originally thought this was related to Bug #541511 - MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) I have tried all the workarounds known from man as mentionned at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes I could get rid of the boot freeze, but not of the (very intense) flickering, until I ran into Daniel's finding. For certain patterns of display activity, the screen was flickering so strongly that it was mostly unreadable. Alright...I just tried with the latest Karmic kernel (2.6.31-22-generic) in lucid - there is no boot parameter needed and no flickering on the external VGA, so this problem can be solved by downgrading the kernel. Should this bug be rather filed against the linux-image-generic package then? I have found signs that this is a common problem simply by googleing ubuntu+10.4+thinkpad+x40+display+problems. A few of the results on the first three pages indicate similar problems. I will keep trying to find a solution to this problem, and if i have to, write a patch for it myself.
