[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
My experience in a nutshell (using Kubuntu): - I have an old machine with a GeForce FX 5200, which was working great with natty and the proprietary nvidia-173 driver, manually installed - I don't care about 3D and effects, but watching movies with nouveau I had some annoying flickering horizontal lines - after upgrading to precise I restored nouveau as the proprietary driver compalined about a missing file in /lib - installing nvidia-173 (173.14.39-0ubuntu0.0.1) using Applications - System - Additional Drivers (Jockey) solved the issue for me. In short, you can use GeForce FX 5200 with nvidia-173 in Kubuntu Precise Thanks to all that contributed! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/948053 Title: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/948053/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
Hello, does anyone know whether it is safe for now (and the future) to update xserver-xorg and its dependencies to the newest versions without breaking compatibility with the nvidia-96 branch of gfx drivers? I am so happy that I was able to make my old NV18 gpu running on a fresh install of LTS 12.04 Lubuntu after I experienced mysterious graphical glitches and severe system slowdowns with nouveau driver modules when I gave Lubuntu 12.10 a try. It took me hours and hours of troubleshooting to find out, that the lack of support for legacy nvidia gpus was causing the hassle in the first place. And now I am afraid of breaking the running system again with an update of the xserver, that is, if i got it right, on the brink to be updated to a new (and yet unsupported?!) ABI version. What would you experts suggest? Fix a certain xserver version? Thank you very much, especially those who helped to make nvidia-96 drivers working in 12.x releases!
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
hi Nixblicker easy to answer: producer-info: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display- ia32-96.43.23-driver.html Has NO support for XOrg-Server ABI 1.13 (which is the latest (lts- quantal)). Read also comment #155 in this bugreport What would you experts suggest? This is not a help Forum - it's for bugreporting. It's focusized on bugreporting and fixing. Join in the discussion on the Nvidia-support forums. I'm not an expert... :-) But it's time to make some thoughts about getting newer HW, i.e. The Nvidia 6200 (new or used), which fits in a AGP-slot is supported by the legacy driver 304. There is also a GT610 for the PCI-slot - but is worth to invest money in a energy consuming oldie? Or stick with 12.04 LTS with 5 Years of support - enjoy the bug- and security fixes – +save some money over the time - take it when the LTS support ends and build yourself a newer system. Carefully selecting the components as the mobo. Which preferably has a multicore CPU to fit in make a 64-bit version installable... AND a PCI-e slot for the graphics- card. So you could make some use of VDPAU or even CUDA (if needed). If u have some $$$ left, add a SSD ;_) Every hardware has it's breakpoint (in terms of EOL of producers- support). AND YES it's great to have this supported in 12.04.2 – Thanks to the dev's! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
@ Johannes Martin Hi Johannes, I tried your tip, not forgetting to chmod +x It didn't worked neither for suspend nor hibernate, but at least I can see briefly on resume/thaw the console login screen. pm-suspend.log doesn't seem to report any error when the wake-up fails. When disabling your script (chmod -x), closing X session then issuing pm-suspend or pm-hibernate from console, both work fine (although no password is asked at wake-up, I get the console session opened), but switching Ctrl+Alt+F7 brings back to black screen, reverting to console impossible and Alt+PrtScn+K ineffective. Sometimes Alt+PrtScn+B reboots the laptop, sometimes not. I wouldn't like to pollute more this thread. Should I post a new bug? And for which package pm/kelnel/xorg/video? Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
I just checked suspend/hibernate and they are both broken. I'm not sure if suspend/hibernate would work with Nouveau or any other driver on this Dell Inspiron 8500 better than with the latest nvidia-96. I haven't used these features much so unfortunately I can't contribute further. On Fri, Jan 4, 2013, at 09:33 AM, Bib wrote: HI Mark I see we have the very same video. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
probably there is also a bug in the NVIDIA driver 96.43.23 installer, everytime I run NVIDIA driver script to compile the driver to upgrade/redo (xorg changes or whatever) , it deletes my installed libvdpau.so.1 I have to uninstall and reinstall libvdpau1 package through apt-get command. It's quite annoying when I want to use mplayer and gmplayer because of this error: $ mplayer mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libvdpau.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory my /var/log/nvidia-installer.log. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
i hope nvidia96 will be available in ubuntu's repo, everythime they release a new kernel (that is happening more often nowadays) i have to install again the driver; also i receive updates about xorg recently, when i restart, the pc was in a loop at login, so i restart in safe mode, and to solve i removed and installed again the nvidia.run, it said the driver was corrupted by a recent installation and give the error /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so is not a symbolic link. but i was able to reinstall and now it work again as before.
NVIDIA's 96.43.23 (32 bit) works for me on an ASUS 8170 GeForce4 MX 440. My only issue was The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! but I accepted the default option Yes to continue installing anyway. Because I have a display with a rather odd display resolution I had to edit xorg.conf to get it included. I still have the old (dead) 96.43.20, the 173 and current in the package list from x-swat but presumably they will updated in time and I shall clean up everything then.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise
who tried the new nvidia96 drivers? im using the new release and i have a little more higher FPS (363 FPS against 235 of nouveau) maybe a faster performance but some visualization problems in firefox, for example in ubuntu forum pages and youtube search field is bit flickering; also in Totem, when i play mp3, the visual effects are shown with a line cutting the field from top right to bottom left. im using nvidia geforce2 mx400 also im using gnome-classic (no effect), because with effect, the frames of the windows arn't visible (with nouveau was working fine) just another question: if i want to uninstall package libgl1-mesa-dri (it give 3D support for nouveau), it ask me to remove also xorg and ubuntu-desktop; should i leave installed, or should i remove from non- graphic mode and then reinstall xorg and ubuntu-desktop? ps: about my comment #121 i managed to set the best resolution for my monitor adding a metamode in nvidia-settings -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/948053 Title: nvidia-173 and nvidia-96 uninstallable on Precise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/948053/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

installed the new nvidia driver release. (actually, i have still nouveou package installed, but nvidia installer provided to disable the nouveau drivers with a modprobe config file) it works...but with my nvidia geforce2 mx400 and a monitor acer X193HQL, by default it choose the resolution of 1280x800 but is not a pleasure for the eyes...the best resolution for the acer should be 1366x768, but, when i choose the 1360x768 resolution in nvidia xserver settings, the desktop is not full in the monitor, the right part is missing. so i have to choose a way in the middle (1280x800). is it a problem with the driver or with the Xconfig?

Is there a plan for resolving the issue with nvidia-96 or is nVidia unlikely to provide the same update for those cards? I have a GeForce MX 4000 that worked fine in 11.10 but now doesn't, and the 173 drivers don't work with it. I know it's an old card, but sourcing AGP cards is getting hard! I'd rather keep this computer working as long as I can, even if that means dropping down to 11.10. Could there be an official backport path of some sort for getting a still-compatible version of Xorg installed on 12.04 if the driver is unlikely to be updated? Ditching a motherboard GPU for a new release of X doesn't seem like a stellar solution to the problem.
