Re: [UC] FW: CPB
MessageI shall testify to that, in a very personal way. In 1981, Penny was newly elected President of Friends of Clark Park and I was newly selected Coordinator of the Clark Park Music Festival. For four months that year, she was my worst enemy. FoCP at that time was out to expel all loud noises from the park and Penny, who lived on the 4300 block of Baltimore Ave., represented her constituents with remorseless vigilance as I sought in vain for a middle ground that could preserve neighborhood harmony. Yet the Festival survived; the neighbors survived; and the park survived. Time shows how life changes, and what endures. With experience and reflection, her views modulated and grew in subtlety and depth. She became a careful, behind-the-scenes advocate for neighborhood harmony over many years, even as I retreated to my private life. Her quiet work on some of Spruce Hill Community Ass'n's most difficult issues (and it had to be quiet) was a force for inclusiveness and sanity. This spring, as she was coping with terminal cancer, Penny asked me that a tree which had been planted in Clark Park in honor of her parents and later died, be replaced. It will be replaced. -- Tony West - Original Message - From: S. RE: [UC] Carolyn Burdon
I hoped my post would solicit praise and personal stories from those who knew her. Thanks Tony for sharing your experiences. Carolyn was a person who dedicated many hours of her life trying to make our community a better place to live working through many community based organizations and projects. She believed if we tried, we could make a difference. I always enjoyed sharing war-stories with her about our community battles. The last time we were together was at the Greenline for coffee. I am going to post some of the comments that come to me privately. I won't mention anyone's names, they know who they are. I would like the members of the listserv to know what kind of neighbors are out here among us. Here is one I received today: Did Carolyn know you claimed her as a friend? You are a backstabbing weasel I have been called many things..not a backstabber..more like a front stabber.. like ...IN YO FACE! What does Carolyn have to do with this persons sentiments? Why desecrate her memory by using her name at all? BTW.. Carolyn and I were not friends , we knew each other from working in Spruce Hill over many years and respected each other. I am sad that she died so young. I have received private messages with remarks about my assumed religion, age, race, and even asking me my sexual preference! ALL very strange to me coming from my neighbors. We are not in some national chat room of people I may never see in life! The person who sent the above comment sent it from the address they use on this list! The responses regarding the Public Safety issue were equally bizarre and made me feel like I was caught breaking into their house! I really don't know why I even bother at times. S

[UC] Clark Park Jan 18 Meeting: Video Now Available
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=290773440076348476hl=en Our membership meeting this past Wednesday offered a lot of novel and interesting things. One of them was an idea of mine: rather than frantically type out the meeting minutes and try to summarize the meeting for everyone, I decided to try to videotape the meeting and load it onto Google Video. This would offer a lot of benefits. A record of the event would be far more accurate than a summary. People who could not attend the meeting could at least watch it. And, depending on the technical issues, we may even have a faster turnaround time. Well, _mirable dictu_, the turnaround time was less than two days this time. Google Video's just finished processing the nearly-hour-long video of the second part of the meeting, regarding the Park A reconstruction. (The first part, about the Party for the Park, will be coming soon.) Note. This is NOT an especially well-done video. It's all handheld, with a lot of whipping around to aim the mike at the speaker. And there are a few glitches. (I'm thinking of borrowing a second camera for future meetings.) But, for everybody who didn't make it to the meeting, the video is available at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=290773440076348476hl=en You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the list named UnivCity. Re: [UC] Clark Park Jan 18 Meeting: Video Now Available
Brilliant! I will probably never have the time or inclination to attend an FOCP meeting, but this was great! I felt like I was right there in the audience. Could have used a little more sex and violence, but otherwise, hey -- great entertainment! -- Ross Bender http://rossbender.org/doggies.html On 1/19/07, Brian Siano [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=290773440076348476hl=en Our membership meeting this past Wednesday offered a lot of novel and interesting things. RE: [UC] Thanks S.!
Ok Ross..you have me salivating here to take you up on that...but... I think it is important to protect the rules of engagement. I don't want to limit anyone's ability to speak to me or anyone else privately about anything we discuss on the listserv thinking it will end up on a public site. For the most part, people still do the right thing there. It is the spirit of community that bothers me, being able to agree to disagree without it getting so personal that we feel it is necessary to take the low road with each other. It is particularly disturbing to hear us call each other liars, and weasels, it is obviously frustration. Many people have really crossed the line with me privately. The other issue is being punished for trying to help? THAT I don't get! I'll publish names only with the permission of the sender. But..thanks for the thoughts! Ummm the Musketeers were in the court of Louis XIV, and that was the 17th century. In reading the old posts ... where has a direct link ever been made from a list serve sherrif to Sharrieff? Does anyone else besides me find this kinda creepy? --- S. Sharrieff Ali wrote: Gloves are off Bruce..see you around the neighborhood! Hmmm. good question. Could be interpreted as taking off his glove to slap Bruce across the face, thus challenging him to a duel in a quaint 18th century Three Musketeers style. On the other hand, when he says Gloves are off, somehow it conjures up an image of Michael Jackson in one of those old MTV videos like Gangsta Paradise. And when he says neighborhood it makes me think of Mr. Rogers. In other words, rather than *feeling* or *perceiving* it as a threat, it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Of course, the problem with these new electronic media like email is that there are just no CONTEXTUAL CLUES to the discourse. Know what I'm saying? You can't SEE the other person's facial expression, so how the heck are you to know when somebody is serious and somebody is just being sarcastic. Man, I spend an awful lot of time on this listserve trying to figure this stuff out. Maybe the only solution is for all the subscribers to get webcams attached to their computers so we can actually SEE their facial expressions when they type their messages. On the other hand that would present problems too, not only because some folks can EVEN FAKE facial expressions, but also because I know from experience that most of the people posting to this list are ugly as sin and who wants to have to deal with THAT?? -- Ross Bender http://rossbender.org/amos.html
