Another bangup performance. Marshall Allen just had his 83rd birthday.
Elliot Levin read a poem by the late Percy Bysshe Shelley "The Heat Goes
On".

This time around there were Tuvan groupies, these houri-eyed chicks in
elaborate headgear, beads, flowing robes.

If you missed it, kick yerself twice.

Mario that really sucks. I'm really glad you are ok.

This is equally disturbing. The fact that he sent you away, obviously
injured is really sad.

Chestnut. Two and a half weeks ago I and Karen Heenan were walking this same
strip of Farragut going from my house to hers and I was knocked down by some
you black youths, about 3 as I recall. One even tried to push Karen, but she
turned around in time to see them coming at her.

Last night it was just me, thank God. But this time it was 5-6 black
youths with bandit style cothes over their face, except for the head and
eyes. I couldn't positiviely ID any of them, because of their facial cover.
Just as in the earlier scenario, once they were done punching and kicking
me, they ran north for Chestnut St. and beyond. More than likely to the
projects over at 45th and Market, I believe it's called West Park. The
officers who took my statement last night tried to get as good a physical
description of the assailants as possible minus their faces. Unfortunately,
it was dark and all that I could make out was this:

1) 5-6 African American youth (14-22)
2) My height (5'6") or taller, up to a little over 6 feet.
3) They wore some form of rolled up t-shirt or scarf over their face bandit
style.
4) The only actual thing they yelled at was some variant of "Pussy1" or
"Fucking pussy!"
5) They said no names.

They were young and foolish, but smart enough to pick me off at a dark
location in an area with few people around who would even consider calling
911. I actually ambled into the BP gas station's quicki-mart to have the
attendant call 911, but he only told me to leave. Someone then pointed out
that I should use my cell phone and I did. I really just wanted witnesses to
the wreck that was my face. A patrl car came within 2 minutes and the
officers started asking me all of the pertinent questions. They even sent
out extra patrols around the area to "round up the usual suspects." They
asked me to at least try to ID two guys they stopped at Walnut and 47th. I
told them I could positively ID anyone and that was the end of anyone hope
that the muggers would be caught.

A police officer later confided in me that they find young kids are up
to no-good around that area, but as soon as they scatter and run over to the
projects, it becomes impossible to find them, because they blend-in in a
very dangerous area. Evidentally the West Park project buildings require a
large police presence before any searches can be made within.

If anyone has heard of any attacks at or around Farragut and Sansom
St., please email me with whatever details. I now know that the police have
records of the two assaults on me at this location, but I'm curious to see
if the same assailants who attacked me attacked anyone else.

Thank you and hey, let's be careful out there.

[UC] update: three squatters arrested in 49th st murder

2007-06-18 Thread Kyle Cassidy

>From 6 ABC:

Police apprehended the men at 70th and Cobbs Creek Parkway. They're suspects in
the beating death of a 28-year-old man on the roof of a building near 49th and
Locust Streets.

The three suspects are described as modern day hobos. Anarchistic vagabonds who
travel by train, jumping boxcars when it's time to go. But today the three of
them apparently tried to make a getaway by train but they didn't get very far.

The suspects jumped the train at 70th and Cobbs Creek, but the cops caught up
with them and hauled them off in handcuffs. They're wanted for questioning in
the beating death of another young man last night.

The victim's body was found on the rooftop of an abandoned apartment building
in West Philadelphia. Police sources say a group of squatters were drinking on
the rooftop last night when a fight broke out. The victim was stomped to death.

Police say the squatters are a part of an underground network of young people
who reject the norms of society. They travel by train, form town to town,
taking over vacant buildings. Neighbors say the group's been in the
neighborhood for about three years.

Marie Thompson tells Action News, "No sanitation, no running water. There's
nowhere to take a bath. They've been here. The tenants and us have been
complaining about them. They'll come once a year, they'll clean out the
building and then (the squatters will) come right back and move in numbers.
Each year the numbers are growing."

Police say there are pockets of them throughout West Philadelphia. They raided
one house of 48th Street and took seven squatters in for questioning.

Police say the squatters are mostly well educated from upper-middle class
families, who choose to reject society's values and live on the fringe. Tonight
three of them are in custody being questioned and possibly facing murder
charges ... now very much a part of the system they despise.

[UC] 49th & Locust Update -- Murder took place during all night party

2007-06-18 Thread Kyle Cassidy

>From abc:

WEST PHILADELPHIA - June 18, 2007 - Philadelphia police now say a man
who was found dead on the roof of a multi-story building was murdered,
apparently during an all-night party on top of the building.

Chopper 6 flew above the scene Monday morning along the 200 block of
South 49th Street near Locust.

Police say the victim is in his late 20s. They say he was beaten beyond
recognition and left on the roof of the building.

Homicide detectives are interviewing a number of people who they say
spent the night up on this roof drinking and partying. Then, a fight
broke out around 6 a.m. Police say that's when the victim was murdered.

Action News is following this homicide investigation.

I'm amazed nobody has picked up on today's Inky article reporting
that, according to UCD's "report card", we so suave, debonair, and
urbane. And all thanks to you know who.

Cmon, dudes, isn't this HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS?? A puff piece in the
MAINSTREAM MEDIA just at the particular moment UCD is in so much hot
water

Tear it apart, dudes. Deconstruct!! Expatiate!!
Okay, so Al's had a stroke over it. I guess we can bitch about the Inky
doing what most papers do-- run a press release with a few additional
comments. Journalism ain't what it used to be.

But the only real criticism is whether the UCD's report is accurate or
not. The article's account seems reasonable to me: there's more
business, more construction, more home ownership, higher rents, greater
demand, and the quality of life's nice. Especially when we recall that
UCD doesn't just cover our Spruce Hill-centric village, but pretty much
everything from the river to 52nd street, and as far north as Drexel
University.

Wouldn't surprise me if the report's accurate. Still, I'd be open to
read some serious statistical surveys to the contrary.

I'm amazed nobody has picked up on today's Inky article reporting that,
according to UCD's "report card", we so suave, debonair, and urbane. And
all thanks to you know who.

Cmon, dudes, isn't this HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS?? A puff piece in the

Fwd: [UC] Move your car! Hazel (and Cedar?) Aves

2007-06-18 Thread pmuyehara
As it turns out the crew was only on Hazel. The 4600 block of Cedar
was not milled to begin with. I'm pretty sure they did mill Cedar
starting at 47th. If you take a look over there, whether I'm suffering
a false memory re Cedar will be revealed, and signs will be posted
indicating when they'll be working there. Most likely, they'll keep
going west on Hazel first, and I'm not sure how many blocks there were
to do.

How far up Cedar and Hazel does this go? A friend of mine at 47th &
Cedar is away until tomorrow and I will have to find out how to move
her car.

Re: [UC] Stars of West Philly

2007-06-18 Thread Ross Bender

"West Philly G" is obvious homage to Amy Gutmann. "From the Block to the
Yacht" is a heartrending testimonial as to how Penn and UCD have made "da
Hood" cleaner and safer. It presents Amy in a cameo, dishing on how she
found Freck Billionaire selling crack on 56th and Thompson and turned that
boy into a star. The rap "I Cook It" testifies as to how Freck left a life
of crime to cook hamburgers in the local Mickey D. Very tear-jerking stuff.

Favorite line:

[deleted] -- "That's a metaphor for when she get her dope on"

Dude went to Overbrook High, same joint as Will Smith. Why he knows words
like "metaphor."

[UC] Shame on you! "University City Gets Rave Review," my foot!

2007-06-18 Thread Krfapt
You ought to be ashamed of yourself, not only for falling for all that
unmitigated pap in the "University City Report Card" (University City
District's
very costly self-promotion piece giving -- guess who? -- itself a self-serving
rave review), but for actually passing it on in what ought to be a newspaper
of which at least a few people can still say "I know it's true; I read it in
the paper."

Our local weekly doesn't fall for that drivel... and they're here so they
know what's what.

[UC] Earthlink

I am wondering if anyone has experience switching to Earthlink for telephone
service and high speed internet. Their advertised monthly price of $49 is very
attractive.
Thanks.

[UC] re: difficult tree removal

2007-06-18 Thread Ann Mayer

I have a beautiful tree in my backyard that some have said is a redwood. It
is basically one TALL trunk with branches that only
start very high up. It has experienced a recent growth spurt and now is
dangerously high. I hate the thought of killing it, but
I fear that it might come down in a major storm and do serious damage.
Removing a tree that high in a backyard with very
restricted access is sure to
be quite tricky. I guess some guy will have to shimmy up the trunk and saw
off sections of the tree rather than cutting it down
by sawing at the base.

Has anyone had good experience with a tree removal company?

I would appreciate any leads.

Thanks,

Ann

Thank you for sending this -- we saw the police activity this morning,
but couldn't find out what was going on. All the attention seemed to be
focused on the abandoned apartment buildings on the southeast corner of
49th and Locust; we were wondering whether it was related to the group
of squatters in residence there.

Re: [UC] Reality check

2007-06-18 Thread Anthony West
Congratulations, Ray. You are starting to answer questions, about a subject
you might even know about. Can you continue, please, though? What you
published below doesn't actually provide any information that would support
your argument.

Let's take a Penn personnel-wrongdoing charge from recent years. (Pick one
that contains no criminal issue, to keep it comparable with the UCD case at
hand. In other words, not one of your sex-offender staffer cases.)

You are saying Penn *never conducts internal investigations* of a
non-criminal personnel concern; that they are immediately referred to a
"third party". Which third party conducts these investigations?

Because I don't believe you. I bet, if a Penn employee like yourself is
accused of some non-criminal malfeasance, Penn will mount an internal
investigation first. I bet the head of that employee's office or department
will be charged with ordering the investigation, if it involves a suspected
offense against the proper functioning of that office. And I bet information
releases to "the Penn Gazette, the DP, and the Chronicle of Higher
Education" will be severely limited pending the outcome of the
investigation.

You are a Penn staffer. Can you name a specific example for us, that
demonstrates a different investigatory path, now or recently employed by
Penn?

Ray wrote:

first, I believe you may be misreading what some of the concerns are.
it's that ucd is conducting an investigation of itself by itself (rather
than by a neutral 3rd party).

second, penn has had several examples in recent years of its own
employees, students, administrators and faculty involved in crimes,
scandals, wrongdoings. to get an idea of how a non-profit,
public-image-is-paramount institution handles situations like these, look
at their coverage in penn publications, look at how the situations are
handled by third parties, look at how all this is publicly available.
