[UC] Calico kitten anyone?

2007-06-20 Thread Bonnie L. McDermott
Hi guys -
Speaking of stray cats ... found one myself today. Her timing was impeccable -
2 friends and I had just finished planning a humane ed class for the UCAL
Animal Appreciation Arts Camp about animal overpopulation and pet needs, and we
were leaving via the back vet school exit when, out pops this little missy from
under a dumpster, about to run into rush hour traffic when my friend dove for
her and covered her in a sweatshirt. Now she is safe and sound with me (and
eating up a storm) but I really need to find her a home since I have another
adult female stray I am trying to re-home, two resident older cats, and
technically we are not supposed to have any pets. And my fiance is beginning
to think I am a budding cat hoarder!!

So ... here is our girl's information, please email me if you might have
interest, she is so adorable and cautious but sweet:
Calico (i.e. female, mainly white base color with orange and black large patches
of fur), about 3 mos old, healthy for a lone kitten on the streets (no upper
respiratory, normal eyes and vision, normal stools) just treated her for fleas,
ticks and worms. I can probably get her spayed soon too, at PACCA. Her
personality - she cautiously watched me as I slowly put my fingers on her head
and chin to pet her and then she fell asleep with her head on my palm, and
started purring. So cautious but needs some TLC I think. She meows when left
alone but she calms right down when you talk gaga to her, and then falls back
asleep. I think all strays must sleep with one eye open always to protect
themselves.

I have her staying in a cat carrier in our bedroom right now (live in a 1BR and
need to keep the other jealous adult cats away from her at all costs) but would
love more space for her.

Anyone interested in adopting or fostering this cute girl? Or have friends
interested? If so *** please *** email me back!!! I am a bit desperate to
find a good home for her as I am leaving town next week for a few days!!

Thanks!!

[UC] John Fenton's New Job

2007-06-20 Thread Kyle Cassidy
Sweet barking cheese! Does this mean that I can now call my city councilwoman's
office to complain about the nine foot weeds in the vacant lot next door?!!

I hope he's able to continue the initiative he demonstrated at UCD in his new
job.

I must say I really have the utmost respect for people who tender to stray
animals, try to find them homes, get them operated on or whatever.

In my life I have always had such strange encounters with wildlife both in
and out of the city, that I just couldn't do it.

I DO have two "Death Row Inmate" cats that I love.

However, I have also had weird encounters with bears, bobcats, (Upstate), a
raccoon gang of three who destroyed almost $2000 of my property; 40 raccoons
at once in early July who were trying help a baby who got stuck in my fence,
deer on Belmont Ave. (before the Deer Crossing sings were posted), and even
deer who know where my workout route is at The Woodlands and meet me at

Still, I cannot respect enough people who do this; especially with cats and

I have a beautiful tree in my backyard that some have said is a redwood.
It is basically one TALL trunk with branches that only
start very high up. It has experienced a recent growth spurt and now is
dangerously high. I hate the thought of killing it, but
I fear that it might come down in a major storm and do serious damage.
Removing a tree that high in a backyard with very
restricted access is sure to
be quite tricky. I guess some guy will have to shimmy up the trunk and
saw off sections of the tree rather than cutting it down
by sawing at the base.

Has anyone had good experience with a tree removal company?

I would appreciate any leads.

Thanks,

Ann

[UC] Gallows Humor

2007-06-20 Thread Mario Giorno

Folks,

I think that it's okay to joke about the misery of life. After all, if
we didn't make ourselves laugh, we'd by crying our eyes out every day and
paranoid with fear. I think the humor breaks through the fear and forces us
to gain a thicker skin and grow sharper teeth. It makes us harder and more
prepared to take what life and the universe can dish out. Hopefully,
however, it doesn't makes us so cynical that we actually forget what reality
lies behind the humor.

How many jokes per day can we post? One? Five? Do puns count/ Must they

How long are we permitted to post? Can I make jokes about Lincoln's

City Kitties got her medicine, she got her vision back, and they trapped
her sister and mother who have since found homes. Roswell is fat and
happy and will be celebrating her first birthday next month:

But some homeless 28-year old human being dying this way on the roof of a

Not only is the indignation almost non-existent, but some of the offenders

[UC] City Kitties needs help!

2007-06-20 Thread Heather Simoes

Hi everyone,

In case any of you are looking to donate, City Kitties is desperately in
need of help at the moment. About a month ago, my husband and I found a
stray who had what we thought was a broken leg. Having too many cats to be
able to foster him if he needed to be casted, we contacted City Kitties who
were kind enough to take him even though they did not have any definite
foster openings. Originally the vet thought his leg just had an abcess. He
was treated, and a foster home was found. Unfortunately, it turned out that
he had bone cancer in his shoulder joint, and his leg had to be amputated.
His prognosis looks excellent, and they are hoping to place him in a
permanent home once he recovers.

The cost of the surgery was very high however, and they have asked me for
help in contacting people who might be willing to provide a donation. I am
circulating this around my office as well, but thought I could reach the
greatest number of people here. No pressure to donate obviously, just
thought I'd spread the word in case any of you were thinking of donating to
a charity. I don't believe City Kitties has obtained official non-profit
status yet, so any donation would likely not be tax-deductible, but it would
be for a good cause.

If you know of anyone off-list who might be interested, please forward to
them as well.

Here is the description and picture on the City Kitties website. He really
is a sweet cat. I hope he finds a home soon.

Thanks much,
Heather

[UC] Yet more fun in the hood

2007-06-20 Thread Karen Heenan
Lest anyone think that our recent crime wave is even somewhat over, think
again. I just heard from a friend who lives on the 4400 block of Osage, and
while she was sitting at home on Monday night watching TV, someone threw a
rock through her 2nd floor living room window. She’s okay except for having
the crap scared out of her and the financial hit of having to get the window
fixed. The police who came out said that a few cars had been hit on her
block, too, but apparently hers was the only house that was bothered.

We want HARD NUMBERS,. pal.

Exactly how soon can we start posting jokes? A day? 17 hours? 2.4 weeks?

How many jokes per day can we post? One? Five? Do puns count/ Must they
follow classic joke structures to count (i.e., knock-knocks,
how-many-X's to change a light bulb, etc.)?

How long are we permitted to post? Can I make jokes about Lincoln's

They're making jokes about equally painful, albeit more personal,

[UC] Brutal Croydan killing update

2007-06-20 Thread Krfapt
>From today's Inky:

Police search for killer of man found on rooftop
By Vernon Clark
Inquirer Staff Writer

CLEM MURRAY / Inquirer Staff Photographer
Transients gain entry to Croydon Apartments, located at the corner of 49th
and Locust Streets, from the rear entrance. A 27-year-old man was found
murdered on the roof Monday morning.

Police reported yesterday they were still seeking the killer of a
27-year-old man found beaten to death on the roof of an abandoned West
Philadelphia
apartment building that has become a hangout for transients from as far away
as
the West Coast.
Timothy Bradly, who police said was likely a transient, was pronounced dead
at about 6:30 a.m. Monday on the roof of the Croydon Apartments on 49th Street
near Locust Street. He had suffered head trauma, police said.
Police said officers found Bradly after receiving a call at 6:10 a.m. Monday
indicating that someone on the roof needed emergency medical treatment.
Police said they had no suspects.
Police Sgt. D.F. Pace said the building, which contains dozens of apartments,
has been a haven for transients over the last few years.
Pace said people who knew Bradly reported that he lived in the 100 block of
North Columbus Boulevard. Pace said it was unlikely that he had a permanent
address.
"Some of them come from as far away as California," Pace said of the
drifters. "They find an abandoned building and hang out there."
The building, which has about six floors, has many boarded-up windows. Other
windows are open, the panes long since gone.
The front courtyard of the building is blocked by a tall black iron fence,
apparently to keep people out. The windows on the first floor are covered by
black iron bars in addition to being boarded up with plywood.
The back of the building is a few feet from the sports fields of West
Philadelphia High School. A broken metal door was wide open, allowing easy
access
to the building, and a hole in a chain-link fence allows people to enter the
debris-strewn rear yard.
Neighbors said they had long voiced concern about drifters staying in the
building.
"We were complaining about them for months," said Cynthia Jacobs, who lives
in an apartment building across from the street from the abandoned building.
Jacobs, who has lived in the block for seven years, said the drifters stayed
to themselves but "they would get rowdy at times."

it's easy to turn this into a question about what's funny or
what's appropriate, but perhaps it's about something else. I
don't know yet what that is, but I think, as you suspect,
it's related to how people behave in groups, where they
locate themselves in the context of a larger group.

I agree people have always made jokes about painful things and situations.

What I think Wendy, Al and Ray were concerned about is this banter borders
on schadenfruede; almost a perverse pleasure at another¹s misfortune.
